Event launched to help construction businesses win major projects

A free event to help local construction businesses in Oldham win work on major regeneration and development projects, is set to be hosted by council leader, Arooj Shah.

The event at Oldham Event Centre next month, will be attended by council contractors working on live or upcoming projects across the borough.

They include Muse, Oldham Council’s delivery partner who will build 2,000 new town centre homes; Tilbury Douglas, who are refurbishing the Old Library and Willmott Dixon who are redeveloping Spindles and will soon start the first major construction phase at Northern Roots.

Other partners are also coming along to talk about their own opportunities, including First Choice Homes Oldham and Oldham College.

Cllr Shah said: “We want Oldham businesses to be working on Oldham contracts.  There’s a lot of exciting developments happening right now in Oldham – and there’s some fantastic opportunities to become part of the supply chains for some major projects.

“We’re working hard to regenerate Oldham and its transformation is now really taking shape. We’ll make sure the local economy and business community benefit from start to finish.

“Businesses of all sizes and trades can come along to the event – the only condition is, you must be based in Oldham.

“While this event has been organised for construction businesses, we plan to hold future procurement events for other sectors.”

The procurement event takes place on Tuesday, March 5, from 1pm-3pm at Oldham Event Centre, Boundary Park, Hilbre Avenue, OL2 5BL. Free parking is available on site.

You can expect to hear about current and future supply chain opportunities, a brief overview of what they are, timescales, value, contract requirements, payment terms, how to apply and contact details for further information.

Six Nations 2024: Monye surprised by Furbank’s England call-up

Ugo Monye believes George Furbank’s inclusion for tomorrow’s Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland gives England a “real point of difference”.

Northampton Saints full-back Furbank was preferred to Freddie Steward for the game at Murrayfield due to his excellent club form this season.

Monye was surprised coach Steve Borthwick made the decision but is excited at the prospect of Furbank pitting his wits against the Scots.

He told the BBC Rugby Union Daily podcast: “Furbank just raises the potential of the attack in this team.

“I really rate Steward and when he’s played for England he’s been very good, he’s very dependable.

“Furbank coming in at 15 heightens the ability of England to be able to attack, and be more coherent, dangerous and score more points.

“This is an attack-minded selection, the only reason I’m surprised by it is that it’s very unlike Steve Borthwick. This England team wants to move on and progress. This could be a real point of difference for England.”

Furbank admitted his surprise at getting the nod for the game in Edinburgh as England look to make it three wins from three Six Nations games following victories over Italy and Wales.

“There’s a couple of bits I’ve been working on and I feel like I’m in a better place as an all-round player,” Furbank told BBC Sport.

“I’ve got a bit bigger, that has helped my game. I’ve taken up more of a leadership role at Saints.

“I’m quite realistic with myself, I know that I’m not a player who can be in average form and make an England squad.

“I don’t necessarily think I saw the selection coming. Freddie has been in great form the last few games, playing really well.

“His consistency is something I strive for as well. That’s something I want to develop in my game.”

Kevin De Bruyne injury: Man City midfielder ‘will travel’ to Premier League match vs Bournemouth

Kevin De Bruyne did not play for Manchester City at Brentford because he “didn’t feel comfortable”, manager Pep Guardiola has said – but the midfielder will travel with the squad for their Premier League match at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Playmaker De Bruyne returned from a five-month lay-off with a hamstring injury by directly contributing to nine goals in eight matches in all competitions, only to be surprisingly left out and remain an unused substitute in City’s hard-earned 1-0 win against the Bees on Monday.

“We took a good decision not to take a risk,” said Guardiola, acknowledging that “people will ask why he didn’t play.”

“He didn’t feel comfortable. I don’t know if he’s 100%. The day after the game, he trained. We will assess and decide but I am pretty sure he will travel.”

Guardiola described 32-year-old De Bruyne’s condition as “good”, adding: “He’s not injured.”

In a documentary released by City this week, De Bruyne said his surgeon had likened his right hamstring to a “wet paper towel” before the operation which had kept him out since the opening game of the campaign.

Bournemouth vs Man City: Spanish coaches meet

City are four points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand ahead of their trip to the Cherries, who are 13th and without a league win in six matches.

Guardiola said he is among those who admire the bold style of play Bournemouth have looked increasingly effective with during manager Andoni Iraola’s first season in charge.

The City boss praised his fellow Spaniard for “an incredible job”, singling out Bournemouth’s 3-0 win at Manchester United and their “direct” and “aggressive” approach.

Iraola is likely to face one of his toughest challenges of the season against opponents who are unbeaten in 16 matches in all competitions.

Midfielder Jack Grealish and defender Josko Gvardiol are “closer” to comebacks for the Cityzens, Guardiola said.

Guardiola would not be drawn on whether either player could return against Manchester United at Etihad Stadium on March 3, adding: “If I know, I will tell you.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe: Man United will ‘be back’ under investor, says Man City boss Guardiola

New Manchester United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe “knows what he has to do” to help the club challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, Pep Guardiola has said.

Businessman Ratcliffe has taken over football operations at Old Trafford and made several high-profile appointments, including the addition of Omar Berrada from City as the club’s new chief executive and a move for former City academy director Jason Wilcox, who is currently at Southampton and could work under Dan Ashworth if the Newcastle sporting director joins United.

In a wide-ranging interview after his deal worth more than £1 billion was ratified, Ratcliffe said he hoped to knock City and the Reds “off their perch” as part of a transformation of United’s footballing structure, echoing the words of Sir Alex Ferguson about Liverpool before the legendary United manager made the club the dominant force in English football until he retired in 2013.

“I am pretty sure that with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and all the other people, United are going to take a step forward,” said Guardiola, who has won the top flight in five of his seven seasons in charge at Etihad Stadium and lifted the Uefa Champions League last season.

“I have the feeling that they know exactly what they have to do. He’s experienced in the business world and makes projects better.

“What I want is for Man City to be there; otherwise, I don’t care. Since day one, I’ve always expected United to be there. I don’t know why it didn’t happen, but they know, I guess.”

Guardiola: City ‘learned from’ United

United have not made a credible title challenge since they won the league in Ferguson’s final season in charge.

Guardiola suggested he had been inspired by the Scotsman’s famed teams of the 1990s and 2000s, namechecking several icons involved with the period that means they hold a record 20 top-flight titles, although current leaders Liverpool are one behind.

“I always admired them and asked what you have to do to be close, to challenge them,” said the Spaniard.

“When we were below and United were winning, we were watching, admiring and wanted to learn from them, in the period from Sir Alex Ferguson and the generation with Roy Keane, Gary Neville, David Beckham – all the big, big players who were there, Rio Ferdinand.

“I’m pretty sure City wanted to be there, and now we are. That’s why, with these types of comments, I’m pretty sure they’ll be back.”

Second-placed City are four points behind Liverpool with a game in hand, while United, in sixth, face a battle to finish in fifth, which is likely to be sufficient to qualify for the 2024/25 Champions League.

Bumper funding boost agreed for Heywood Civic Centre

Plans to transform Heywood Civic Centre just got bigger after councillors agreed to plough an additional £2.25m into the scheme.

A meeting of Rochdale’s budget fixing council on Wednesday, sealed the deal for the well-known venue which is currently closed while preparation work takes place ahead of a proposed redevelopment, expected to start in April.

Under the original proposals, which were submitted for planning in December, a brand new 50 square metre extension with a glazed frontage onto Peine Square would be created to open up the venue.

Under the new proposals, this extension will now stand at 150 square metres to create a more accessible entrance foyer which will contain a café bar that doubles up as a box office, with increased capacity for café seating and a new kitchen.

The increased funding will also enable the creation of a new main bar at ground level. This means the mezzanine level, where the bar would have gone in the original scheme, can now offer flexible use during the day and act as an overspill area during evening events.

The additional investment will also fund the creation of two additional changing rooms to increase the capacity of performers, enabling larger shows to be staged at the venue. In addition to refurbishment of the existing facilities, two new accessible toilets with baby changing facilities will also be available for public use, alongside a new Changing Places Toilet, located in the new entrance foyer.

The wider plans for the Heywood Civic Centre include retractable seating in the auditorium, to enable a more flexible performance space, and upgrades to the sound and lighting systems.

New opportunities for the community to participate in the arts will be created by Your Trust, and local arts organisation, Cartwheel Arts, will be relocated to a new base in the centre.

Additional funding

Councillor Danny Meredith said: “I’m delighted that we have approved this additional funding, which will enable us to do much more than we originally envisaged with this much loved venue. It’s one of a number of improvements we told residents we would deliver as part of the Heywood masterplan, and I’m excited to see we’re already delivering on these commitments.”

The redevelopment of the Heywood Civic Centre is a key part of the Heywood masterplan, which outlines major improvements which will be delivered in the area.

Heywood Civic Centre is operated by the council’s leisure and culture partner, Your Trust, who are also partners in the project, and Rochdale Development Agency (RDA) are managing the project on the council’s behalf. North-West based Hive Projects and K2 Architects have been appointed as part of the design team.

Councillor Sue Smith said: “The Heywood Civic Centre has been a focal point of the Heywood community since the 1960s and I’m very excited about this important investment into its future. These improvements will enable a much bigger variety of performances to be held here, boosting its status as an important cultural venue in our borough.”

The Capital Investment Programme supporting the redevelopment of Heywood Civic is funded by Arts Council England and Rochdale Borough Council.

Heywood Civic Centre is expected to reopen to the public in 2025.

Manchester to host prestigious national ‘Women of the Year’ awards 2024

The Women of the Year Luncheon and Awards has announced its 2024 Awards will be taking place for the first time in Manchester.

The event, in its 42nd year, takes place at The Etihad on October 11 and will celebrate the achievements of exceptional women across the UK. More than 400 guests are expected to attend.

It is the first time the organisation has selected Manchester to host the awards, and in recognition of the city where the suffragette movement famously began, there is a new category named The Emmeline Award – Woman of Courage.

The awards’ headline sponsor for 2024 is award-winning bank Aldermore which is returning for its second year. Other key sponsors include law firm Freeths LLP, LSH Auto, Pertemps PLC, Roland Dransfield PR, and Strategi Solutions.

The team behind Women of the Year recently came together with 2023 winners and supporters at The Etihad to further celebrate the winners and their achievements. The evening also gave a taste of what Women of the Year Luncheon and Awards has in store for 2024.

In attendance were Zalena Vandrewala, managing associate at national law firm, Freeths LLP, who is chair of the board of Women of the Year alongside Manchester-based actress Sally Lindsay (pictured), president of the organisation.

2023 winner of the Business Woman of the year award Clair Heaviside, co-founder and creative director of Manchester-based Serotonin Digital Marketing Agency, also attended to celebrate alongside her alumni.

Zalena said: “We are thrilled to be bringing our established event to Manchester this year. Manchester is obviously central to the history of women, and we had to recognise it with the introduction of our new category, The Emmeline Award – Woman of Courage.

“The awards celebrate great achievements by women across society, not just in business. We want to promote the inspirational role models amongst us and what better place to do so than Manchester – the birthplace of the Suffragette movement.”

Women of the Year is also proud supporters of The Prince’s Trust, last year donating £13,000 to the charity.

Further information on nominations for 2024 will be revealed at the official launch of the 2024 Awards taking place at the House of Lords on March 7, 2024.

Sponsorship packages are also available. For further information contact [email protected].

Manchester United boss Ten Hag confident he has the backing of Ratcliffe

Erik ten Hag is certain he has the backing of new minority shareholder Jim Ratcliffe and believes they share the same ambitions for Manchester United.

Ratcliffe’s 25 per cent purchase of United was confirmed this week and he – under the Ineos banner – will control the sporting side of the club as well as committing $300million to improving infrastructure.

Furbank included by England for Calcutta Cup clash

The arrival of the petrochemicals billionaire is good news for United fans but it ramps up the pressure on Ten Hag to deliver on the field.

United go into tomorrow’s home game with Fulham in sixth place in the Premier League and on the back of five successive wins in all competitions.

A fourth-placed finish and a spot in next season’s Champions League would be a great start to the Ratcliffe reign but failure would see Ten Hag come under increasing scrutiny.

He said: “It will be always the case but I see the process and I see this team is developing and is progressing.

“We will do everything in our power to get to [the top four]. We know the reasons why we are not in that position. We are in a moment where every game is like a final for us.

“We have to be in the Champions League, we have that strong ambition. We are good enough, we believe it but we have to deliver.”

Asked if his ambitions matched those of Ratcliffe, he added: “Absolutely. We have so many talks. We are very aligned. We have the same ambition. We are very aligned in the process.

“There is no added pressure on this season because we have the same ambition and the same targets.

“I have been here 19 months and we are going in the right direction.”

United’s progress has undoubtedly been hampered by a crippling injury list that was starting to clear, only for striker Rasmus Hojlund to be ruled out for up to three weeks with an unspecified muscle injury.

The young Dane struggled initially at Old Trafford but has scored in each of United’s last six Premier League games, including a brace in last Sunday’s 2-1 victory at Luton.

Ten Hag said: “It’s a small injury but [he’s out for] two or three weeks. It is the risk of playing high intensity training. It is not a big injury, but he has to wait for one, two, three weeks.”

It could mean the likes of Amad Diallo and Antony get a chance to step up.

“All the players will get opportunities to show their qualities,” said Ten Hag. “We have the confidence they can. That’s why we constructed this squad.

“They will get the opportunities and it’s on them to contribute.”

Revolutionizing Events: Discover the Game-Changing Benefits of Using Storage Containers for Your Next Outdoor Spectacle

0

Throwing an outdoor event? With spring fast approaching, weather forecasts will start to look a lot brighter, making now the perfect time to start planning yours. There are many benefits to hosting outdoor events, but they do require extensive planning.

During this process, it’s easy to get caught up on details like entertainment, food and guest list. However, this may mean you’re forgetting about storage. Storage space is often an overlooked aspect of event planning, but it’s actually integral to the success of the party.

You’ll want all your goods on-site, so you can easily access things like beverages and entertainment props. Plus, safe storage is essential for giving workers a place to leave their possessions while they’re entertaining your guests.

One of the best storage solutions for an outdoor party is containers. While they may not be the first thing that pops into your mind, they’re extremely handy for outdoor parties and we’re here to tell you why. Continue reading our guide to see why storage containers are the perfect addition to any outdoor event.

Secure storage

Security is paramount when it comes to storing valuables, supplies and merchandise for an outdoor event. Storage containers are an excellent choice for this as they’re made of robust steel, have anti-vandal properties and have state-of-the-art locking systems.

This should ensure your staff members all feel confident that their goods will be kept safe while they work and you can rest assured that your merchandise won’t be stolen.

Weather resistant

As we know the weather is not always on our side – even when the weather forecast says it should be sunny, so a storage container hire may be the best option to keep your valuables safe and dry. This storage is completely weatherproof, so you won’t need to worry about rain, snow or any other extreme weather type getting in.

On-site convenience and huge capacities

By having everything on-site, you can maximise productivity, speed up your set up and concentrate on providing attendees with an amazing experience. As snacks, drinks or other party goods run out, your workers can quickly go to the onsite storage facility to quickly replace them, ensuring guests aren’t waiting long for a top-up.

What’s more, storage containers have huge capacities. This eliminates the need for more offsite storage facilities, decreasing transportation costs and downtime between events.

For outdoor events of all shapes and sizes, storage containers provide a multitude of advantages, ranging from improved security and weather resistance to adaptable storage options and easy accessibility. Consider hiring one for yours and book it early to ensure you aren’t left short on storage space by the time your outdoor party rolls around.

North West entrepreneur invites others to ‘come home’ for inclusion event

0

From start-ups to seven-figure founders, entrepreneurs are coming together from across the globe to learn and connect in Bolton next month.

Bolton Stadium is playing host as the new home to the fastestgrowing inclusive personal and business development event, The BIG Festoon on March 21 and 22.

Attracting celebrity keynote speakers, business owners both from the local area and from across the globe, and connecting people who are working on their side hustles while still employed, The BIG Festoon is an event focused on sharing knowledge, inspiring action and creating opportunities, particularly for those in selfemployment.

Created by North West-based international speaking coach, No.1 best-selling author, and mum-of-3, Dani Wallace (pictured) the event now in its fourth year.

It has grown from an initial 40 people at The Impossible in central Manchester, to selling out the 350 people event space at Manchester United, to now expanding into Bolton Stadium to double the sizeWith this expansion comes a greater focus on inclusion, so that the event really is open to all.

Dani (40) said: “I remember reading about a survey (from the British Association for the Advancement of Sciencewhich said that Boltonians are the friendliest people in BritainThis is the vibe I am bringing to this event – open arms – where people can ‘come home’ no matter where they are from.

Committed to providing a ‘safe space for conversations that matter’The BIG Festoon is an example of an inclusive event, which is actively inviting people from diverse backgrounds and marginalised communities, who often feel excluded from big mainstream events ‘to come to the party’, reassuring them it’s safe for them to do so, having made inclusion and accessibility a huge priority in their planning process.

Part of the rapid expansion of the event has been due to Dani, who grew up on the council estates of Preston and who is a survivor of domestic abuse, embracing wider communities of entrepreneurs as the event has grown.

She said: “I have always felt ‘different’ throughout my life. But my strength and success has come from embracing my difference and having a strong voice, so this is something I am passionate about helping others to do. Initially I set this event up to celebrate the voices of female entrepreneurs – to give them a platform as many were still not being heard in the business space -especially on speaking circuits, which I had experienced myself.

“As I have grown my business and grown as a person, I have been introduced to, and indeed immersed in, other cultures and communities which I recognise need support to be heard and celebrated. Having grown up singing in clubs and pubs and travelling the world as a professional singer, I have always been an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community. Making my events a safe space for all has become a key focus in helping people from underrepresented communities be seen.

“Helping them see other people like them take up space, be wellreceived and welcomed with open arms is part of my mission. Last year I was delighted to give my stage to Alex Jay Lynam of Beyond The Binary, who shared their non binary journey as a keynote speaker. Alex, from Manchester, has now become a part of my consultancy team who has helped me create an event that feels genuinely safe for all – and this is a joy to be able to achieve.”

One of the keynote speakers on this year’s lineup representing the LGBTQIA+ community is the incredible transgender singer songwriter and former X-Factor star Dylan Holloway, winner of music show Project Icon, which saw him hit the charts making music with Jason Derulo.

Dylan will be sharing his story of selfdiscovery, encouraging everyone to connect with their authentic selves, no matter what gender they are. Sponsors for the event also include Queer Business Club – a community which offers collaboration + content for queer business owners.

Being a mum to a neurodivergent son and having ADHD herself, Dani is also a huge champion for inclusion around neurodiversity. Jo McMeechan, a SEN mum and founder of SENStory, who is a former speaker at this event who braved sharing her message of challenges and triumph in this area, has also joined The BIG Festoon accessibility team.

Jo is on a mission to build inclusive environments where everyone can thrive, has supported Dani to help create an event which is accessible to those with additional needs.

She said: “From Sensory Breakout Spaces, to pronouns on badges, to captioning the talks and trigger warnings when it comes to sensitive topics, to accessible seating, to venue information being supplied to help reduce overwhelm, and a ‘flight squad’ – our team of volunteers, which includes certified therapists and health and wellness practitioners, there are an abundance of measures that have been put in place to open this event up to people who often feel ‘they are not invited to the partybecause the party is ‘their worst nightmare’.

“It’s not right that people with additional needs or psychological safety challenges should be excluded from vibrant, empowering events – there is a way for them to be a part of these experiences, in a way that suits them, where they feel safe.”

The BIG Festoon takes place during Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurodevelopmental disorders and learning disabilities.

It aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported by providing organisations with the opportunity to recognise the many talents and advantages of being neurodivergent, while creating more inclusive and equitable cultures that celebrate differences and empower every individual.

A further piece of the inclusion jigsaw is being looked at in partnership with Manchester born and bred Samantha Lubanzu, who with over two decades of HR experience, is currently the Vice-Chairperson of the CIPD Manchester.

Samantha is working with Dani shining a spotlight on black-owned businesses that often face underrepresentation and is hosting a table for black owned business owners – she said: When you’ve got somebody who is white and straight presenting, running a business event, the general consensus is that it’s going to be attended by a lot of straight white women, and that isn’t the case for The BIG Festoon, so I want to show black business owners that there is a place for them here.

Set within the backdrop of inclusivity, the talks within the event are set to appeal to all business owners. Bringing in speakers who have already achieved great success, like event Headline Sponsor Lisa Johnson from That Strategy Co who has made £16million over the last 7 years, whilst working around her twins, and keynote Speaker Laurie Burrows who started her business whilst pregnant and now celebrates turning over up to 100K a month by the age of 30, the event is set to inspire, educate and motivate ambitious entrepreneurs looking to achieve the same.

Also sharing the stage is worldrenowned speaker Daniel Priestley – an awardwinning entrepreneur, and best-selling author who started with nothing, then built successful multi-million dollar businesses in Australia, UK and Singapore. These experts will be sharing knowledge on how others can also scale, whilst working flexibly, and still enjoy life.

But the majority of the lineup is curated from entrepreneurs earlier in their journey – who will be taking to the stage at Bolton Stadium, in front of 800 people, to share their stories and messages as part of their commitment to overcome their fears of glossophobia, and as part of their mission to create bigger ripple effects with their work.

Dani said: This isnt your usual business event – what we explore here are subjects that matter on a very human level – not just on a business level. We talk fears, and limiting beliefs, money blocks and marketing and we also talk about what it takes to succeed and over these 2 days its my job to help everyone in that audience to see how they can slay their own dragons, so that they can grow, and walk away more confident and more ready to take their place in the world.

Local entrepreneurs from the North West taking to the stage include; Nicola Parker, of Stronger Than Your Mind, a Mental Fitness Mentor for business owners from Oldham; Janine McDonald founder of Clear the Clutter from Swinton.

Tickets are available via https://www.thebigfestoon.co.uk/ and there are a couple of sponsorship slots left if any businesses would like to be a part of this too. For more info email [email protected]
