Transforming ‘The Ice Blocks’ into Affordable Warmth for the Energy-Vulnerable

In an evocative short documentary, Richard Worrell, a dweller of a flat in one of England’s most impoverished areas, narrates his experience in “the ice blocks” pre and post an innovative £7.9 million community transformation initiative.

This ambitious scheme has retrofitted over a thousand flats across 21 tower blocks in Walsall’s housing developments with the latest in energy conservation technology. The refurbishments have not only improved the habitability but also made thermal comfort financially accessible to the residents.

Watmos Community Homes, by partnering with Soltherm and Surefire Management Services, secured significant funding from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF), receiving a landmark £7.9 million for this endeavour, the largest investment for such a project.

Richard’s personal story highlights the difference this funding has made for the community’s disadvantaged members. “I was involved with the estate, more than 20 years ago. And I worked with residents, and we used to call these places ‘the ice blocks.’ So that says it all really, doesn’t it?”

The film brings to light the profound effects of this project on the community.

“You noticed the difference instantly once the thermal cladding was in place, it just made it so noticeably more comfortable. It just makes this place so much nicer to live in.” Richard Worrell – Resident

This documentary demonstrates the journey from frigid, uninviting dwellings to warm, lively homes that bring health, comfort, and vitality to Walsall’s residents facing energy poverty. The Watmos Regeneration Project is available for viewing on Soltherm’s official site.

‘Anything is possible’ – Bashir bullish despite England capitulation

Bowler Shoaib Bashir insists England can still recover to force a decider in their series with India, despite a batting collapse giving them a monumental task to salvage the fourth Test.

Bashir played a starring role as England finished day two on top, then completed his five-for on Sunday as they established a 46-run first-innings lead.

However, a dismal batting display from the tourists handed the initiative back to India, with Ravichandran Ashwin matching Bashir’s five-wicket haul as England were bowled out for just 145 runs.

India now need just 152 to go 3-1 up in the five-match series, and they still have all 10 wickets in hand ahead of day four.

England, meanwhile, are staring down the barrel of a first series defeat under Ben Stokes, but Bashir says it would be unwise to rule them out on an unpredictable surface in Ranchi.

Speaking to TNT Sports at stumps, he said: “We’d have liked one or two wickets in that period at the end but we’ve got a big job to do tomorrow. On that pitch, anything is possible.

“I used to watch some of the guys in my dressing room as a little kid. They’re brilliant, they give me so much confidence and it’s a wonderful group to be a part of, that really gets the best out of you.”

Reflecting on his maiden five-wicket haul, Bashir said: “It’s pretty surreal. I want to dedicate this to my two grandads who passed away around a year and a half ago, they loved Test cricket and their wish was for me to play.

“I’m so grateful. My favourite wicket was [Yashasvi] Jaiswal’s. He’s in top form and he’s an incredible player, so to get his wicket was surreal, too.”

On the India side, Ashwin – who kickstarted the hosts’ assault by removing Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Joe Root early on – could not hide his delight in his own interview with TNT Sports.

“I enjoy bowling with the new ball and today was another of those days,” he said. “I wanted that first over. I seem to have a bit of attachment to the new ball, it allows you to bowl a little quicker, and I enjoyed that.

“We showed phenomenal character. Kuldeep [Yadav] was brilliant today. He can put a lot of revs on the ball and he’s got a lot of skill, but he changed his paces really nicely.

“He is very difficult to play against when he does that and I’m sorry to take the five-for from him!”

India v England: Hosts on brink as tourists collapse again

India are on the brink of a series success against England after tearing through the tourists on Sunday, moving within 152 runs of victory in the fourth Test in Ranchi.

With Shoaib Bashir reducing India to 219 for seven by close of play on Saturday, England began day three with a golden opportunity to hit back after suffering successive defeats in Visakhapatnam and Rajkot.

Dhruv Jurel’s superb 90 steadied the ship for India, but England could still be content as Bashir and Tom Hartley finished the hosts off for 307, giving Ben Stokes’ team a first-innings lead of 46 runs.

However, England capitulated after taking up the bat, with Ravichandran Ashwin scalping Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Joe Root to leave the tourists reeling at 65 for three.

England’s last seven wickets fell for just 35 runs as Ashwin completed his five-for, with India coming in to bat for the final half-hour requiring 192 runs to go 3-1 up in the series.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal ensured there was to be no late drama, trimming the target down to 152 and ensuring India will begin day four with all 10 wickets in hand. England, meanwhile, need a minor miracle to make the fifth Test in Himachal Pradesh a decider.

It may now seem like a long time ago, but England began Sunday looking for quick wickets to open up a commanding first-innings lead, though they were frustrated by Jurel.

Dropped by Ollie Robinson on 59, he ended up being India’s last man out for 90, Hartley denying him a maiden Test century with a beauty of a delivery to finish on figures of 3-68. Bashir, meanwhile, secured his five-for by bowling Akash Deep lbw.

Duckett (15) was aggressive from the off as England took up the bat, but it was a more cautious stroke that proved his undoing as he prodded Ashwin’s ball straight to Sarfaraz Khan at short leg.

From the very next delivery, England were in real trouble, with Pope walking for a golden duck – his second naught of the Test – when he failed to adjust to Ashwin’s wicked ball.

Root (11) came in and initially kept the India onslaught at bay, but his all-important wicket was gone within 12 overs, with India successfully reviewing after yet another Ashwin ball struck his pad ahead of leg stump.

Zak Crawley inched his way to 60 off 91 balls as England desperately tried to regain some momentum, but Kuldeep Yadav sent stumps flying to end his knock at a vital time, then the spinner bowled Stokes lbw for just four runs with the final ball before tea.

With Brendon McCullum’s gameplan in tatters, England were ultra-cautious in the evening session, but there was no stopping India as Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep continued their assault to reduce the tourists to 133-8.

Ben Foakes was limited to singles as England tried to hang on until day four, striking a defensive 17 off 76 deliveries, but he eventually handed a catch straight back to Ashwin, who then capped his super Sunday by bowling James Anderson for a duck.

On an unpredictable surface, Root and Hartley took up the ball chasing an early wicket, but none was forthcoming as Rohit and Jaiswal batted out the remaining overs for 40 runs with supreme calm, leaving India within touching distance of victory.

‘Bigger picture’ positive for Manchester United despite Fulham loss – Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag insists the “bigger picture” looks positive for Manchester United despite Saturday’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Fulham dealing a huge blow to their Champions League hopes.

United looked to have salvaged a point at Old Trafford when Harry Maguire cancelled out Calvin Bassey’s opener with just one minute of the 90 remaining.

However, there was a sting in the tail for the hosts as Alex Iwobi fired home seven minutes into stoppage time, inflicting United’s 10th defeat of the Premier League season and leaving them eight points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa.

The result has led to renewed criticism of Ten Hag’s approach, but the under-fire Dutchman believes his team are still moving in the right direction.

“After one defeat you have to see the bigger picture, and the bigger picture looks very good,” Ten Hag said.

“We have to catch up in certain positions and get the injuries back, then we will be more in balance and also strengthen the squad in the transfer windows.

“You see there are many good players coming up and real high-potential players. They will be getting better, so definitely we are going in the right direction.”

United were without the likes of Luke Shaw and Rasmus Hojlund for Saturday’s game, while Casemiro was substituted after sustaining an ugly head injury midway through the second half.

Bemoaning United’s selection issues, Ten Hag added: “When we have players available, we have a very good team.

“Today we could have won this game, even we should have won this game as the team showed great character. We had slow starts in both halves, definitely.

“It was a big loss to lose Casemiro. We lost some stability in the team, then conceded a goal that is very avoidable and then fought back in the game.

“I have to credit the team, they showed great character. Then we went for the win but by the end we let them slip away.”

United now face a make-or-break week in their season, travelling to Nottingham Forest in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday then facing Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Bournemouth vs Manchester City: Preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

Having dropped two valuable points in the title race against Chelsea last week, Manchester City got back to winning ways on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola’s champions weren’t exactly convincing as they edged past Brentford by a 1-0 scoreline at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland on target against the only side he had previously faced in the Premier League without scoring.

That result, however, proved an important one as Liverpool responded with a 4-1 triumph over Luton Town the following day. With the Reds not in Premier League action this weekend as they face Chelsea in Sunday’s EFL Cup final, City have a chance to move within two points of Jurgen Klopp’s leaders.

Guardiola’s men don’t tend to pass up such opportunities, but Bournemouth have proven their worth this season and could offer up a challenge at the Vitality Stadium.

Six Nations 2024: Monye surprised by Furbank’s England call-up

Andoni Iraola’s side are safely ensconced in mid-table after enjoying a productive festive period, but they have hit a rut lately, going six Premier League games without a victory.

Their former player Matt Ritchie haunted them last time out, netting a stoppage-time equaliser for Newcastle United as the teams shared a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park.

Bournemouth have never avoided defeat in 13 previous top-flight meetings with City. Can they defy the history books to provide another twist in the title race?

Team News

Bournemouth have a few long-term absentees, with the likes of Max Aarons, Ryan Fredericks and Tyler Adams still unavailable. Philip Billing, meanwhile, will complete his three-match suspension here after seeing red against Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

City will be without Josko Gvardiol and Jack Grealish, and they also have a concern about the status of Kevin De Bruyne. On Friday, Guardiola revealed the Belgian will travel to the south coast, though it is not yet certain whether he will be involved after suffering a knock to his hamstring.

Expected Line-ups

Bournemouth: Neto; Smith, Zabarnyi, Senesi, Kelly; Christie, Cook; Semenyo, Kluivert, Tavernier; Solanke.

Man City: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Dias, Ake; Rodri, Kovacic; Foden, Alvarez, Doku; Haaland.

What they Said

Iraola on the challenge of facing City:

“You definitely need them to have a bad day because they are a very strong team. You need them to miss some chances, to make some mistakes, but also we have to be on a very good day.

“You have to make them play uncomfortably and give them the opportunity to make mistakes.”

Guardiola on De Bruyne being an unused substitute for Tuesday’s win over Brentford:

“We took a good decision not to take a risk. We know people will ask why he didn’t play.

“He didn’t feel comfortable. I don’t know if he’s 100 per cent. The day after the game, he trained. We will assess him and decide but I am pretty sure he will travel.”

When and How to Watch

Saturday’s game will kick off at 17:30 at the Vitality Stadium and will be televised live by Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event in the UK. It can also be streamed via the Sky Go app.

Prediction

City haven’t won a Premier League game by more than two goals since they hammered Bournemouth 6-1 in November’s return fixture, in a game which saw Jeremy Doku register a goal and four assists.

Though the Cherries have struggled in recent weeks, we expect that trend to continue here, with City doing a professional job on a tough ground. We’re backing the champions to keep the pressure on Liverpool and Arsenal with a 2-1 victory, with Haaland and Solanke both on target.

Manchester City: Iraola confident Bournemouth can ‘damage’ champions

Andoni Iraola is confident his Bournemouth side can “damage” Manchester City this evening but admits it’s “one of the most difficult games you can play”.

Bournemouth host the European champions on the back of a four-game winless run in the Premier League, although they arguably deserved more than a point from last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola’s men arrive four points behind league leaders Liverpool and with little margin for error in the title race.

And Iraola knows his side will have to be at their best.

He said: “We are in a good moment. The Newcastle game was one of the best games we’ve played this season.

“I finished really happy with the game, even after reviewing it, we were very good against a very good team. It’s true that we are probably not as good in the boxes as we’ve been in the previous run, but I think overall, the team is doing good things and I think we can also be good tomorrow.

“It’s obviously one of the most difficult games you can play, they are a team with more possession and you have to be ready mentally to be a lot of time without the ball and defensive.

“I think we can damage them but it’s obviously a very difficult game in a lot of areas.”

Iraola knows City will try to dominate the ball but hopes he side can get enough possession to cause problems.

“They control all of the games, they don’t want the games to be very open, they want the games in just one direction,” he added.

“They take the ball and dictate the game, they don’t leave you breath but we have to make the game both directions, even if we concede chances.

“They can score a goal but we have to also make it a game of two directions, so they are also concerned about our forwards. I trust our forwards; I think they can make a difference.”

Romain Favre has recovered from illness and will be available.

Manchester United vs Fulham: Preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

Manchester United’s second season under Erik ten Hag has been anything but a smooth ride, yet things may now be looking up for the Red Devils on and off the pitch.

Indeed, United are unbeaten in all competitions since the turn of the year, with last week’s 2-1 victory over Luton Town making it five Premier League wins on the bounce for Ten Hag’s men.

Their performance at Kenilworth Road may have been less than convincing, with both Casemiro and Harry Maguire fortunate to avoid being sent off before half-time, but Rasmus Hojlund’s early brace ultimately proved decisive, and United are now within just five points of the top four.

Off the pitch, this week brought confirmation that Jim Ratcliffe’s minority takeover had received approval from the Premier League. Champions League qualification is United’s first aim in this new era, and momentum seems to be with them.

Opponents Fulham sit safely in mid-table, six points adrift of the top half and nine clear of the relegation zone, but Marco Silva will be desperate for a response after their error-strewn 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa last week.

Ollie Watkins scored either side of half-time to hand Villa all three points at Craven Cottage, with Silva’s men unable to complete the fightback after Rodrigo Muniz reduced their arrears.

Despite Muniz finding form with a run of four goals in his last three league games, Fulham have underwhelmed since the turn of the year, only winning one of their five league games so far in 2024 (two draws, two defeats).

Fulham suffered three defeats to United in 2023, with the most heartbreaking of those coming in the FA Cup quarter-finals on this ground last March. Aleksandar Mitrovic’s goal put the Cottagers ahead, but with Wembley in their sights, the Serbian joined Willian and Silva in seeing red as they capitulated to a 3-1 loss.

Could revenge be on the cards on Saturday?

Team News

United have a few selection issues to contend with ahead of this game, with Luke Shaw unlikely to feature again this season after suffering a leg injury.

In-form striker Hojlund will also miss out after sustaining a muscle issue, while Lisandro Martinez, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount and Anthony Martial are also unavailable.

Fulham, meanwhile, will be without arguably their most important player in midfield enforcer Joao Palhinha, who must serve a two-match ban after racking up 10 yellow cards for the season. Raul Jimenez is still out with a hamstring problem, though Armando Broja is available again after recovering from a bout of illness.

Expected Line-ups

Man Utd: Onana; Dalot, Varane, Evans, Lindelof; Mainoo, Casemiro; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Rashford

Fulham: Leno; Castagne, Diop, Bassey, Robinson; Reed, Cairney; Decordova-Reid, Pereira, Wilson; Muniz.

What they Said

Ten Hag on Hojlund’s injury:

“It’s a small injury, he will be two or three weeks. That is the risk of playing and high intensity training. It’s not a big injury but he has to wait now for two or three weeks.”

Silva on United’s recent improvement:

“They are more confident, if you look at them they are achieving so many good results both home and away.

“They have top players who can decide a game in any moment. It’s going to be a challenging one for us but we are ready to fight for the three points.”

When and How to Watch

Saturday’s game will kick off at 15:00 at Old Trafford, and it will not be televised live in the UK.

Prediction

While United have been picking up results in recent weeks, their performances still leave plenty to be desired, and Fulham will fancy their chances of remaining competitive here.

The absence of Hojlund will be a major blow for the Red Devils, with Marcus Rashford often flattering to deceive in a central role. Fulham have twice gone close to upsetting Liverpool this season and did manage a 2-1 win over Arsenal before the turn of the year, so we fancy them to find the net, but United’s quality should tell in a hard-fought 2-1 home win.

Russian Olympic Committee loses appeal against suspension

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) has lost an appeal against a suspension handed down by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Last October, the IOC suspended the ROC “until further notice” over a breach of the Olympic Charter.

That came after the ROC moved to incorporate sports bodies representing the regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in eastern Ukraine, which were annexed by Russia in 2022.

The IOC’s decision means the ROC cannot operate as a National Olympic Committee or receive any funding from the Olympic movement.

Despite pressure from Ukraine to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing at the 2024 Games in Paris, the IOC announced in December that athletes from the two countries could compete under a neutral flag. Russian and Belarusian teams, however, are barred.

The ROC appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a bid to overturn the suspension, but on Friday, it was confirmed they had failed in that effort.

A widely reported CAS statement read: “The CAS panel in charge of this matter dismissed the appeal and confirmed the challenged decision, finding that the IOC executive board did not breach the principles of legality, equality, predictability or proportionality.

“The CAS panel’s decision is final and binding except for the parties’ right to file an appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal within 30 days on limited grounds.”

The opening ceremony for the 2024 summer Olympics will take place on July 26, with the closing ceremony being held on August 11.

Lewis Hamilton: Red Bull ‘in the distance’ despite Mercedes improvements

Though Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes have clearly improved their car ahead of the 2024 Formula One season, he acknowledges Red Bull remain “out in the distance”.

This year will be Hamilton’s last with his current team, with the seven-time world champion agreeing to join Ferrari for 2025 after activating a break clause in his Mercedes contract.

Hamilton has endured back-to-back winless campaigns, with Mercedes fighting reliability issues with their W13 and W14 cars in 2022 and 2023.

Having set the 12th-fastest time on the final day of pre-season testing ahead of next week’s Bahrain Grand Prix, Hamilton believes Mercedes’ latest effort – the W15 – represents a clear step up.

However, he knows Red Bull remain some way clear of the competition, with the constructors’ champions having won 31 of the last 33 races across the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

“It felt much more enjoyable to drive,” Hamilton said of Mercedes’ new car on Friday.

“We still have time to find more. It’s a good platform to work from, a much better car to start the season with. Red Bull clearly are out in the distance.”

Hamilton has won six of his seven world titles while driving for Mercedes, with the most recent of his triumphs coming in 2020. Ahead of his move to Maranello, the 39-year-old is determined to go out on a high.

“This chapter is still not finished,” he added. “I am still 100 per cent focused on finishing on a high with this team and have absolute faith in everything going on in the team.

“We will try to close the gap to the Red Bulls somehow.”

Asked about his decision to sign with Ferrari just a few months on from penning a new two-year-deal with Mercedes, Hamilton said sporting the Scuderia’s iconic red livery was a dream shared by every driver.

“Last summer, we signed [the new contract] and I saw my future with Mercedes,” Hamilton said. “But an opportunity came up at the end of the year and I decided to take it.

“It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make. I’ve been with Mercedes… I think it’s 26 years they have supported me. We have had an absolutely incredible journey.

“We have created history in the sport and I am very proud of what we achieved, but ultimately I am writing my story and I felt like it was time to start a new chapter.

“You see the driver in the red cockpit and you wonder what it would be like to be surrounded by red.

“You go to the Italian Grand Prix and you see the Ferrari fans. It is a team that has not had huge success since Michael Schumacher’s day, and I saw it as a huge challenge.

“Even as a kid, I used to play on GP2 as Michael! I’m really, really excited by it.”
