Danny Care: England scrum-half yet to decide on retirement after ‘amazing’ Six Nations

0

Danny Care says he has not decided whether to retire from Test rugby after winning his 101st cap in England’s 33-31 defeat in France on Saturday, describing boss Steve Borthwick as “one of the best coaches I have ever worked with”.

Having won his 100th cap during England’s epic last-gasp win over Ireland at Twickenham a week earlier, Care replaced Alex Mitchell 10 minutes from the end in Lyon and helped England regain the lead before Thomas Ramos’ penalty decided the contest for the hosts.

“I’ve not made any big decisions yet,” said the 37-year-old, calling himself “still not out”. “I’ve loved being a part of this team. I genuinely have.

“This past seven weeks, during the Six Nations, have been some of my favourite times in an England shirt.

“Last week was an unbelievable feeling; I thought we were going to do it again and maybe surpass [that], but last week was obviously an amazing moment.

“The icing on the cake would have been another win this week but it wasn’t to be. I’ve never been prouder to wear an England shirt.”

A disagreement with former head coach Eddie Jones looked to have ended Care’s Test career but he returned after a four-year absence to win his 84th cap on the 2022 tour to Australia.

“I’ve had an amazing time and this team is going to go in one direction, I’m sure of it,” he said. “Whether I’m a part of that or not, I’ll be the happiest person to be a part of it or watching it.”

England coach Borthwick ‘the man’

England’s slim chance of winning the Six Nations following their win over Ireland was over by the time they took on France after the reigning champions beat Scotland earlier on Saturday, but Care says he owes Borthwick and his coaching staff “an awful lot”.

“He is always wanting to get better,” added Care. “That’s one of his big phrases – he hates looking back, he is always looking forward.

“Straight after the game, he is thinking ‘how we can improve? How can we get better?’ He blew my mind at the [2023] World Cup a few times when he had all the stats and the data and the analytics.

“He rolls that all down so we can actually understand it as mere mortals. He sees all these trends in the game and what’s happening and why it is happening and he knows stuff.

“All I will say about Steve is that he is the man. He is one of the best coaches I have ever worked with; his attention to detail, how honest he is, how much you trust him – he is the one to take this team where it is going to go. The sky is the limit.”

Care’s club side, Harlequins, are seven points behind Northampton in second in the Premiership before their visit to Harlequins – a point below them, in fourth – on Saturday.

Manchester United legend Schmeichel hails ‘different man’ Ten Hag after Liverpool victory

0

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes Erik ten Hag “looked a different man” during yesterday’s rousing extra-time FA Cup win over Liverpool.

Ten Hag made numerous changes when his side fell 2-1 down deep into the extra period, shifting creative midfielder Bruno Fernandes back into centre defence, right winger Antony to left-back and changing the mindset to all-out attack.

And it worked. Marcus Rashford brought them level before Amad Diallo, thrown on as a substitute with five minutes of normal time to go, grabbed a dramatic winner to send United through to a last-four clash with Championship side Coventry City at Wembley.

Schmeichel believes it could be a turning point for Ten Hag who has had to contend with speculation around his position for much of the season.

The Dane, who helped United with the treble under Alex Ferguson in 1999, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I don’t see any reason for a change [of manager after this season]. I don’t see any reason for a change in the first place.

“There’s a lot of other positions in the club that need changing, and you can’t do everything in one go. I was pleased with him yesterday, I have to say. Everything looked different around him.

“He came on the pitch in his suit and tie. He looked a different man yesterday. He looked like the manager. A strong character.

“Sometimes these little changes have a massive impact.”

Jurgen Klopp interview: Claims Liverpool boss ‘continued yelling and screaming’ after Manchester United defeat

0

Niels Christian Frederiksen says he has “absolutely no problem” with Jurgen Klopp despite claiming his awkward interview with the Liverpool boss yesterday descended into the German “yelling and screaming”.

Viaplay reporter Frederiksen fell foul of Klopp following Liverpool’s 3-2 extra-time defeat at Manchester United in the FA Cup – ending the Reds’ hopes of a domestic and continental quadruple.

FA Cup semi-final draw: Man Utd to face Coventry after stunning Liverpool win
Ten Hag – We have a team for the future

Klopp took umbrage at a line of questioning that centred around Liverpool’s drop off in intensity during the extra period as the home side hit back from 2-1 down to set up a semi-final with Coventry City.

He snapped: “That’s a bit of a dumb question I have to say.

“If you see us often…if you never saw us, you can ask how can they have more resources? We played I don’t know how many games recently. I don’t know how many games exactly United have played. That’s sport.

“Really disappointed by that question but you obviously thought it was good.”

The reporter followed up by clarifying Klopp’s explanation was down to “too many games”, at which Klopp responded: “Oh you don’t think that? Come on.

“You are obviously not in a great shape and I have no nerves for you.”

Frederiksen admitted his initial reaction, and that of people around him, was surprise at Klopp’s outburst.

He told Danish newspaper Tipsbladet: “I was very surprised by that, and those standing around were scared, and they were almost pressed against the wall like: ‘wow, what the hell just happened here?’.

Frederiksen also revealed that when the cameras stopped rolling and the producer cut back to the studio, the exchange continued.

He added: “It continued after what you saw on TV. He continued down the hall yelling and screaming at me. I also went after him because I thought it was something strange.

“I was very surprised, while there were some who looked very shocked, and they asked: ‘Are you okay?’ and [I said] ‘oh my God, I’m okay’.”

Frederiksen insisted he and Klopp had never had a problem previously.

He added: “I have interviewed Jurgen many times. I don’t know him personally, but I’ve been down to Mainz several times when Leon Andreasen and Mohamed Zidan were there, and I’ve also interviewed him in Dortmund and lots and lots of times during his Liverpool days. So we don’t have a bad relationship at all.”

Federiksen admitted he understood Klopp’s frustration and insisted he harboured no ill feeling despite clips of the interview going viral this morning.

He said: “I know that when you are one of the world’s best coaches, and you have been for years, it will not happen if you are not the world’s worst loser. The premise of being a good coach is that you don’t like losing and that you are a winner.

“I interpret it mostly that he was terribly frustrated that they lost to Manchester United in the way it happened, where they were ahead twice and should have had it in the bag. His dream scenario was to play an FA Cup final at Wembley in his last game in England and that has been taken away from him now. So I can understand him being super frustrated.

“Then he got a question that he didn’t think was appropriate. It has been a theme for them that they have had many injuries and many matches that he has complained about. Then he got a question about why they didn’t have intensity in the game, and then he snapped. That’s fair enough. I have absolutely no problems with that.”

Some have interpreted Klopp’s remark that Frederiksen was not “in great shape” to be a dig at the interviewer’s physical well-being but he insisted that part was a misunderstanding.

He added: “No, no, no, that’s not what he meant at all. First of all, I’m not overweight, and if I was, he would never, ever say that.

“Klopp is not like that. It wasn’t meant that way at all. He thought I was out of shape to ask questions.

“There will be absolutely no problems in the future. I can’t imagine that at all. When I have to interview him again, we are still good friends – professionally speaking.”

Scaling up bitcoin: A comparative look at overlays and indexers

Bitcoin’s ability to handle a growing number of transactions is a key focus of innovation
within the cryptocurrency space.

As transaction volume rises, the need for solutions that maintain efficiency and scalability becomes paramount. This article delves into two important approaches for managing data on the Bitcoin blockchain: overlays and indexers.

We’ll explore their unique roles and how they contribute to addressing the challenge of
scaling Bitcoin.

Indexers: The backbone of blockchain data access

Indexers play a crucial role in the Bitcoin ecosystem by meticulously scanning and cataloging blockchain transactions. Let’s break down how they function:

● Blockchain record-keepers: Indexers act as meticulous librarians for the BTC
blockchain. They analyse each block, ensuring every transaction is recorded and
easily accessible.

● Search and retrieval: Indexers enable users to quickly search for specific
transactions or addresses on the blockchain, providing essential data for wallets and
other applications.

Examples of indexers

Some popular indexers within the Bitcoin ecosystem include:
● Blockchair: A well-known blockchain explorer that utilises indexing to provide a user-
friendly interface for searching and analysing Bitcoin data.

● Blockstream esplora: An open-source block explorer and indexer operated by
Blockstream.

● Blockchain.com explorer: One of the oldest Bitcoin block explorers, providing search
functionality powered by indexing.

Challenges of the indexing approach

While indexers are vital to ensuring data accessibility, they face limitations that hinder
scalability:

● Growing blockchain, growing burden: As the Bitcoin network expands, indexers
must process increasingly large blocks. This can lead to slower performance and
increased resource demands.

● Cost and complexity: Maintaining and running indexers can be expensive and
technically demanding due to the need to scan the entire blockchain for every
transaction.

The role of indexers in the evolving bitcoin landscape

Despite these challenges, indexers remain a critical component of the Bitcoin infrastructure,
ensuring the reliability and accessibility of transaction data. However, as Bitcoin’s usage grows, its scalability limitations highlight the need for complementary solutions like overlays to meet the demand for faster and more efficient transactions.

Overlay networks: Revolutionising Bitcoin transactions

Overlay networks represent a different approach to how transactions are processed and verified within the Bitcoin ecosystem. They offer distinct advantages over traditional indexing methods:

● Bypassing the full blockchain: Overlay networks don’t require scanning the entire blockchain. Instead, transactions are submitted directly to the overlay by their creators.

● Streamlining transaction processing: This direct approach significantly speeds up transaction processing and validation, making overlays ideal for high-volume applications.

The benefits of overlay networks

● Enhanced scalability: Overlays are designed to handle growing transaction volumes without the performance bottlenecks associated with full blockchain scanning.

● Optimised peer-to-peer efficiency: By facilitating direct transaction communication, overlays reinforce the decentralised nature of Bitcoin.

● Security boost: Overlay networks often incorporate Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) protocols, adding an extra layer of security for transaction validation.

Overlay networks present a compelling solution for addressing Bitcoin’s scalability challenges. Their focus on efficient transaction processing and security enhancements makes them well-suited for building next-generation Bitcoin applications.

Bitcoin SV and salability

Bitcoin SV emerged as a fork of the Bitcoin Cash blockchain, itself a fork of the original Bitcoin. It operates as an overlay network by introducing changes such as significantly larger block sizes designed to enable vastly increased transaction throughput.

With a market cap of over $2 billion, Bitcoin SV highlights the real-world impact overlay networks can have. Its focus on scalability to handle a high volume of transactions and support more complex applications demonstrates the power and flexibility of overlay network concepts.

The future of bitcoin scalability

The broad acceptance and integration of overlays and indexers within the Bitcoin community and developer circles hold immense significance. The extent of adoption of these technologies will wield substantial sway over their impact within the Bitcoin environment.

● The impression of integration: The seamless assimilation of these technologies into existing frameworks and their incorporation into forthcoming innovations will ultimately determine their true effectiveness and the degree of confidence they garner from both the community and developers. The readiness of developers to incorporate these solutions into their applications will be a pivotal consideration.

● Unceasing progress: Overlay and indexer technologies are not static entities; they undergo continual refinement and innovation. The continuous progression plays a vital role in bolstering their capacities and tackling emerging obstacles.

Bitcoin’s quest for scalability doesn’t solely pivot on technological prowess; it equally hinges on the community’s acceptance and the relentless refinement of overlays and indexers. The future course will be determined by how adeptly these technologies are crafted, embraced, and tailored to accommodate the ever-evolving demands of the Bitcoin network.

Final thoughts on scaling up Bitcoin

Overlays and Indexers offer complementary approaches to tackling Bitcoin’s scalability challenges. Overlays excel in efficiency and scalability, ideal for high-throughout applications.

Indexers remain crucial for ensuring reliable data access despite scalability constraints. The future of Bitcoin scalability lies in a collaborative approach, potentially including solutions like Bitcoin SV, that balances the strengths of these technologies. This strategy, paired with ongoing innovation, will be key to Bitcoin’s long-term growth and adaptability.

Cavan Sullivan: Man City ‘in talks’ to bring USMNT striker to Premier League from Philadelphia

0

Manchester City are in talks to sign 14-year-old Philadelphia Union academy striker Cavan Sullivan, according to a report linking the reigning Premier League champions with a player described as “doing really big things” by his coach.

Sullivan, who is yet to sign a professional contract with Union, won the Golden Ball as the USMNT U15s won the Concacaf Championships in August 2023.

City have agreed the “main points” of a deal with the MLS club and plan to loan Sullivan to Belgian side Lommel SK, which is part of City Football Group’s portfolio, when he becomes 16, The Athletic has said.

Ten Hag – We have a team for the future

Union are said to be open to an agreement which would keep Sullivan with them until he is 18, and the outlet cited two sources as saying they have made him the “best-ever homegrown offer” to stay.

“[Sullivan] has the talent and ability to become, I’ll just say, a household name,” Union manager Jim Curtin said in 2023.

The Eastern Conference club’s exports include Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson, while Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty came through their system before joining the Colorado Rapids.

MLS commissioner Don Garber acknowledged to The Athletic last week that retaining youth talent can be a challenge.

“That 14-year-old kid who’s playing in Philadelphia who is rumored to be one of the best young kids in the world – how do we ensure that kid wants to play in MLS, that we could afford to sign him, and he wants to play for one of our clubs?” asked Garber.

Cavan Sullivan transfer

The report likened Garber’s comparison to the move Christian Pulisic made when he left home in Pennsylvania as a teenager to join Borussia Dortmund’s academy, later joining Chelsea and current club AC Milan.

Sullivan will not be able to play for City until he turns 18 because he does not have an EU passport.

He is the younger brother of Union homegrown midfielder Quinn Sullivan, a 19-year-old attacking midfielder or winger who has been prolific for the US at U20 level.

Sullivan’s older brother won the Concacaf U20 Championship in 2022 and was an MLS Cup runner-up with Union in the same year.

Manchester United v Liverpool: Angry Klopp storms out of TV interview following FA Cup defeat

0

Jurgen Klopp showed his frustration at Liverpool’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United by storming out of a post-match interview with a Norwegian TV channel.

Klopp took umbrage at a line of questioning from a reporter from V Sport after being asked about Liverpool’s drop in intensity during extra-time.

Liverpool edged 3-2 ahead when Harvey Elliott scored in the 105th minute at Old Trafford yesterday only for Marcus Rashford to equalise and Amad Diallo to grab a dramatic winner for the hosts with virtually the final kick of a pulsating encounter.

It ended Liverpool’s bid to land a domestic and continental quadruple in Klopp’s final season in charge and the German’s irritation was clear to see afterwards.

Asked about Liverpool seemingly running out of gas as the game went on, he snapped: “That’s a bit of a dumb question I have to say.

“If you see us often…if you never saw us, you can ask how can they have more resources. We played I don’t know how many games recently. I don’t know how many games exactly United have played. That’s sport.

“Really disappointed by that question but you obviously thought it was good.”

The reporter followed up by clarifying Klopp’s explanation was down to “too many games”, at which Klopp responded: “Oh you don’t think that. Come on.

“You are obviously not in a great shape and I have no nerves for you.”

The former Borussia Dortmund boss then exited the interview and walked past the reporter.

Klopp was more measured when he spoke to the BBC after the match.

He said: “United had a really good start in the game, we didn’t. We used the time and adapted well. We were outstanding but we had to finish the game off and we didn’t.

“If you’re only one goal up it’s clear your opponent is still there and we lost it in the end. I cannot ask for more. The boys gave everything.

“You have to accept the result. They deserve to go to the next round. There was a period in the second half when we should have finished it but we didn’t and we knew they could come back.

“I think my boys showed incredible character again, super effort. Everybody showed it. You cannot compare our season to United’s with the amount of games. It’s fine, we deal with it.”

Olympic great Kenny retires to focus on family

Britain’s most successful female Olympic athlete, Dame Laura Kenny, has announced her retirement from cycling.

The 31-year-old, who won five gold medals, won’t compete at a fourth Games in Paris this summer after admitting the dedication required was impacting her family life.

Kenny is married to former cyclist Sir Jason Kenny – the most successful British Olympian of all time with seven golds. They have two children together with the second arriving last July.

She told BBC Breakfast: “I always knew deep down I would know when the right time was.

“I have had an absolute blast but now is the time for me to hang that bike up.

“It’s been in my head a little while, the sacrifices of leaving the children and your family at home are really quite big and it really is a big decision to make.

“More and more, I was struggling to do that. More people asking me what races was I doing, what training camps was I going on – I didn’t want to go ultimately and that’s what it came down to.

“I knew the minute I was getting those feelings. Once I said to Jase, ‘I don’t think I want to ride a bike anymore’, I started to feel relief.”

Kenny was one of many British athletes to star at the 2012 Games held in London, winning the Women’s Omnium and the Team Pursuit and she repeated the feat in Rio De Janeiro four years later.

At the Tokyo Olympics, held back to 2021 due to Covid, she won gold in the Women’s Madison alongside Katie Archibald.

Although the lure of competing in Paris was there, Kenny said it wasn’t great enough for her to commit the time required to chase gold number six.

“I was getting these hesitant feelings,” said Kenny, who also won seven World Championships.

“Going on to win another gold medal, as much as I would love to do that, it wasn’t giving me the energy I wanted anymore, it just wasn’t.

“I wasn’t thinking, ‘I really want to go on and win one’. I was thinking, ‘I really want to stay at home with the children’.”
