Emma Raducanu says developing her game, rather than picking up results, is her priority ahead of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
Raducanu returned to the court in January following an eight-month absence, after cutting her 2023 season short to undergo wrist and ankle surgeries.
The former US Open champion went out to Wang Yafan in the second round of the Australian Open and has won just three of her seven matches so far this year.
However, ahead of facing qualifier Rebeka Masarova in the first round at Indian Wells on Thursday, Raducanu said she is looking beyond short-term results to ensure long-term success.
“I want to work on becoming a better tennis player,” Raducanu told BBC Sport. “I think for me, I’m not too concerned about this year’s tournaments.
“A lot of people out there would say that I need matches, but I think that for me, I want to work on my game and my development.
“Taking time to do that is necessary and it’s about not just following the crowd, or playing a lot of matches, or dropping down [to Challenger level] to do that. I want to work on developing skills.”
Raducanu reached the fourth round at Indian Wells last year, with that run representing one of few bright spots in a disappointing campaign, coming shortly after she discovered she would need surgery on both wrists.
Asked about her long road back to fitness, Raducanu added: “It’s just a bit of a journey for me, I would say, you don’t really know what to expect after being out for eight months.
“I felt like because I was so go-go-go since December, I felt like I became a little fatigued, so it was good to go back, freshen up and practice for the American swing, which I’m a big fan of.”
England have largely performed well on this tour and they deserve more than to return home having been beaten 4-1 – a point coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes will be keen to emphasise.

England will find it difficult to get up for this game given the series is already lost. Andwith India’s young guns fighting to keep their places when the more established players return, they will not be lacking in motivation.
The conditions could suit England more than the previous four games but we don’t think that will be enough to sway the game in the tourists’ favour.
Mark Wood has replaced Ollie Robinson in the only change to England’s team for the fifth and final Test against India in Dharamsala.
Wood was rested for the fourth Test in Ranchi, where a five-wicket victory saw India claim the claim the series with a match to spare.
Robinson suffered a back strain while batting in England’s first innings of the last Test, and the paceman was not used as the tourists attempted to halt India’s successful chase of 192 in the second innings.

The UK’s push for smart meter implementation witnessed a robust 30% increase in January 2024, with energy suppliers completing a notable 221,000 installations.

Former world number one Simona Halep can return to the WTA Tour with immediate effect after her four-year ban for doping was reduced to nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Halep was provisionally suspended in October 2022 when Roxadustat was detected in a urine sample at the 2022 US Open while the use of another prohibited substance was also flagged in her biological passport in September 2022.
She was handed a four-year sanction by the International Tennis Federation in September 2023.
Halep, a two-time grand slam champion, took her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and they today partially upheld her appeal, reducing the sanction and backdating it to October 2022.
CAS agreed with Halep that Roxadustat had entered her body unintentionally. In a statement, it said: “Having carefully considered all the evidence put before it, the CAS Panel determined that Ms. Halep had established, on the balance of probabilities, that the Roxadustat entered her body through the consumption of a contaminated supplement which she had used in the days shortly before 29 August 2022 and that the Roxadustat, as detected in her sample, came from that contaminated product.
“As a result, the CAS Panel determined that Ms. Halep had also established, on the balance of probabilities, that her anti-doping rule violations were not intentional.”
As for the second charge, relating to the biological passport, CAS added: “Having regard to the evidence as a whole, the CAS Panel was not comfortably satisfied that an anti-doping rule violation under Article 2.2. of the TADP had occurred. It therefore dismissed that charge.”
