Scaling Up: Racking and Storage Solutions for Growing Businesses

With rapid business growth comes a set of challenges, and one of the most critical aspects that demands attention is the management of storage and inventory. As businesses expand, the need for scalable and efficient storage solutions becomes increasingly vital. In this blog, we’ll delve deeper into the repercussions of growth on storage needs and explore a variety of racking and storage solutions that can cater to the demands of a flourishing business.

The Impact of Growth on Storage Needs
Increased Inventory

One of the most evident consequences of business expansion is the escalation of inventory. Whether dealing with tangible products, raw materials, or finished goods, a growing business requires more physical space to store its expanding array of items.

Diverse Product Lines

With business growth often comes diversification of product lines. The expanding range of products demands flexible storage solutions that can adapt to various product sizes, shapes, and storage requirements. A one-size-fits-all approach no longer suffices.

Enhanced Efficiency

Efficiency is the cornerstone of sustainable growth. Streamlining storage processes becomes imperative as it significantly improves operational efficiency, reduces retrieval times, and minimises the risk of errors. Efficient storage is not just a matter of convenience; it directly impacts the overall productivity and competitiveness of a business.

Choosing the Right Racking System
Selective Pallet Racking

For businesses experiencing high product turnover, selective pallet racking emerges as a go-to solution. This system allows easy access to every pallet, facilitating quick retrieval and replacement. Moreover, selective pallet racking maximises vertical space utilisation, making it an efficient choice for businesses with limited floor space.

Cantilever Racking

In cases where businesses deal with long or awkwardly shaped items such as pipes, lumber, or furniture, cantilever racking proves to be a highly adaptable solution. Its open-front structure enables easy loading and unloading, providing a practical solution for industries with diverse storage needs.

Drive-In Racking

When storage density is a primary concern, drive-in racking offers a great solution. This system allows forklifts to drive directly into the rack, eliminating aisles between racks and maximising the use of available space. Drive-in racking is particularly suitable for businesses with a large quantity of homogenous products.

Automated Storage Systems
Automated Vertical Carousels

Integrating automation into storage systems can bring about a significant boost in efficiency. Automated Vertical Carousels are a prime example. These systems use rotating shelves to bring items to the operator, minimising the time spent searching for products and optimising the overall picking process.

Warehouse Management Software (WMS)

Investing in a robust Warehouse Management Software is crucial for seamlessly managing a growing business’s storage needs. WMS can provide real-time visibility into inventory, optimise picking and packing processes, and improve overall warehouse efficiency. It acts as the central nervous system, coordinating and synchronising various storage components for maximum efficiency.

Safety Considerations
Rack Inspections

Maintaining safety within the storage environment is non-negotiable. Regular inspections of racking systems are essential to identify and address any signs of wear, damage, or instability promptly. Proactive rack inspections not only prevent accidents but also contribute to the longevity of the storage infrastructure.

Employee Training

Ensuring the safety of employees is a shared responsibility. Properly training staff on safety protocols related to storage and retrieval is paramount. This includes forklift operation, manual handling techniques, and emergency procedures. An informed and trained workforce is a key component of a secure working environment.

Conclusion

Scaling up a business is a multifaceted endeavour that goes beyond expanding sales and increasing the customer base. It requires a holistic approach to infrastructure development, and one of the central pillars of this development is an efficient and scalable storage system. By implementing the right racking and shelving solutions, integrating automation where applicable, and prioritising safety measures, businesses can fortify their foundation for sustained growth. As you navigate the challenges of expansion, remember that a well-organised and optimised storage system is not just a logistical necessity but a strategic asset that can propel your business to new heights of success.

Rio Ferdinand fit to commentate on Manchester United at Galatasaray

Rio Ferdinand will fulfill his television duties with TNT Sports tonight after leaving last night’s coverage early due to illness.

The former Manchester United defender was not present post-match to discuss Newcastle’s draw at Paris Saint-Germain with host Laura Woods saying he had to leave the broadcast due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

It later transpired Ferdinand had started to feel unwell during the game and left the Parc des Princes to return to his hotel.

He was able to make the early flight from Paris to Istanbul, however, and this morning posted a video of himself and TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher being carried through the airport in Turkey.

Ferdinand will be in the stadium tonight to offer his views on United’s Champions League clash at Galatasaray.

Rahul Dravid to stay on as India coach

Rahul Dravid has been handed a new contract and will remain as head coach of India despite their World Cup final failure.

India swept all before them at the tournament they hosted only to come unstuck earlier this month against Australia, who clinched a six-wicket win on the back of Travis Head’s brilliant century.

Dravid’s deal expired at the end of the World Cup but, following talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he has agreed to stay on.

BCCI president Roger Binny said: “Rahul Dravid’s vision, professionalism, and unyielding efforts have been important pillars in Team India’s success. As head coach of the Indian Cricket Team, you are always under immense scrutiny and I extend appreciation to him not only for embracing the challenges but for thriving in them.

“The performances of the Indian team are a testament to his strategic guidance. I am delighted that he accepted the offer to remain the head coach, and it speaks of the mutual respect and shared vision between him and the BCCI.

“I have no doubt that under him, the team will continue its march to the pinnacle of success and set new benchmarks along the way.”

Dravid took over from Ravi Shastri in 2021 and has helped establish India as the number one side in all three formats.

His next assignment will be a tour of South Africa followed in January 2024 by a five-Test home series against England.

Dravid said: “The last two years with Team India have been thoroughly memorable. Together, we have witnessed the highs and lows, and throughout this journey, the support and camaraderie within the group have been phenomenal.

“I am genuinely proud of the culture we have set in the dressing room. It’s a culture that stands resilient, whether in moments of triumph or adversity. The skills and talent that our team possesses are phenomenal, and what we’ve stressed is following the right process and sticking to our preparations, which has had a direct impact on the overall result.

“I thank the BCCI and the Office Bearers for placing their trust in me, endorsing my vision, and providing support during this period. The demands of this role necessitate considerable time away from home, and I deeply appreciate my family’s sacrifices and support. Their instrumental role behind the scenes has been invaluable. As we embrace new challenges post the World Cup, we remain committed to the pursuit of excellence.”

Fire and festivities as Christmas countdown starts in Rochdale

The countdown to Christmas began in Rochdale on Sunday with thousands of people attending Ignite Fire Festival and the Christmas Lights Switch-On at the town hall.

Over the weekend 10,500 people enjoyed the council-organised event which included a new two-day fire festival, leading up to the big switch-on at the town hall on Sunday evening.

Ignite Fire Festival transformed the gardens opposite Rochdale Town Hall with two free colourful night-time spectaculars featuring a dazzling trail of fire and lights along with live entertainment.

Visitors walked through displays, blazing sculptures and magical illuminated installations created by artists from the UK and abroad, including flame arches, a striking ‘Eyeful Tower’ of fire and flame throwing, a musical fire tree along with an assortment of other fire based attractions.

Packed crowd

Street theatre and interactive arts group Travelling Light Circus performed shows to packed crowds featuring live fire juggling, torch spinning and dance, along with local residents who had been trained especially for the event.

Drum Machine – a 20 strong drumming collective played throughout the event to add to the dramatic atmosphere. Earlier each day they also hosted sold-out drumming workshops at Deeplish Community Centre, teaching local residents how it’s done.

For young children there was a lantern making workshop at The Medicine Tap hosted by local social enterprise ‘Artful’ with many attendees taking their homemade lantern to the switch-on.

Street food

Sizzling festive street food was served up for the big crowds waiting for the switch on, with Middleton Arena’s Jack and the Beanstalk Christmas pantomime star Dame Trott (Danny Jay) introducing proceedings just after 5pm alongside his Fairy co-star (Hayley Russell).

On stage they led festive sing-alongs before the mayor councillor Mike Holly greeted the audience, followed by Father Christmas.  Finally special guests, the borough’s children’s champions Harry Milne, Maisy Heaton and deputy Ayaan Khan took to the stage to wish everyone a merry Christmas before flicking the switch and turning on the lights for 2023.

After the lights started twinkling there was more music and a very eye-catching fire display followed by another rousing performance by Drum Machine, while Ignite Fire Festival continued into the evening.

The Mayor said: “The crowds were magnificent all weekend, the weather was kind to us and it was great to see so much support for these events and to be back at our wonderful town hall after four years away.

“Seeing the lights go on and the countdown to Christmas begin was wonderful, and the fire festival really made it a unique event. The mayoress and I wish you all a merry Christmas and hope to see you back in Rochdale town centre over the coming weeks.”

A first for Rochdale

Councillor Janet Emsley said the event was a first for Rochdale and something a lot of visitors appreciated.

Ignite was organised by Rochdale Borough Council in partnership with Out There Arts – the National Centre for Outdoor Arts & Circus and Culture Co-op, a ‘Creative People and Places’ programme, funded by Arts Council England.

Manchester dementia research team wins at HSJ Awards 2023

A Greater Manchester-based dementia research team has won the first ‘Modernising Diagnostics’ award at the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards 2023.

The prestigious award was won by the brainHealth Manchester team, led by Dr Ross Dunne – a dementia research specialist at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH).

brainHealth Manchester is a new ‘pathway’ to help diagnose the underlying diseases causing dementia in people living with the mildest forms of cognitive impairment.

The initiative will allow service users to have better knowledge and choice when it comes to making decisions around their illness and future care, as well as making it easier to participate in some of the ground breaking research taking place in GMMH.

The HSJ Awards took place on November 16, at Evolution London, hosted by comedian Matt Lucas and supported by partner Vodafone Business.

Judging panel

The judging panel was made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community.

All winners were judged against five criteria; ambition; outcome; spread; value and involvement.

Members of the brainHealth Manchester team took the stage to accept their award as the first winner of the Modernising Diagnostics category, which had been added this year to reflect areas of innovation, initiate and progress in positive patient outcomes.

Following a thorough judging process, GMMH was also named a finalist in the ‘Mental Health Innovation of the Year Award’ for the MCT Pathway and PATHWAY Beacons projects, which integrated Metacognitive Therapy into cardiac rehabilitation for people living with cardiovascular disease.

Diagnosing diseases

Dr Dunne said: “brainHealth Manchester is part of the UK’s Brain Health Coalition, a group of expert centres working together to develop specific clinics to diagnose the diseases underlying dementia at the earliest possible stage.”

“At the moment, tests to diagnose early disease are available to a small minority of UK patients living close to an expert centre. Together with collaborators in the Brain Health Coalition, we hope to encourage more UK memory clinics to establish pathways for early disease that provide comprehensive risk assessment, personalised risk reduction, and timely disease diagnosis as well as enhancing access to research.”

“We hope this win will help people living with milder cognitive problems, who may have underlying diseases that could go on to cause dementia within 5 or 10 years.”

75th anniversary of the NHS

Alastair McLellan, Health Service Journal editor, said: What better year than the 75th anniversary of our wonderful and world-leading NHS to be able to applaud all those who were recognised as worthy winners at the 2023 HSJ Awards.

“I’d like to extend my personal congratulations to Dr Ross Dunne, brainHealth Manchester and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust who scooped ‘top spot’ in the Modernising Diagnostics Award.

“It was so encouraging to – once again – see an unprecedented level of entries! The calibre of projects was outstanding and I really do hope that entrants – whether they took home   trophy or not – enjoyed the experience and benefitted from the informed feedback they received from our highly experienced judging panel.

A ‘record-breaking’ 1,456 entries were received for this year’s Awards, with 223 projects and individuals reaching the final shortlist, making it the biggest awards programme in the award’s 43-year history.

B-B-L Protect Teams Up with Sales Agency to Launch Isolation Pods in the UK Market

B-B-L Protect, based in Manchester, has unveiled an innovative Personal Isolation Pod, a breakthrough in the safe transportation of contagious patients. Specialising in isolation pods for various applications including aviation, hospital wards, and road ambulances, B-B-L Protect ensures effective disease containment and crew protection. Following positive responses at the Emergency Services Show and HeliTech Expo London, the company has named Sentinel Ambulance Service and its Aeromed division as the official UK sales agents for their AeroPod 15 road ambulance isolators and AeroPod 10 aviation evacuation isolators.

The AeroPod range by B-B-L Protect sets a new benchmark for user-friendliness and reduced operational costs, distinguishing itself from traditional hard case isolation pods. Each AeroPod, weighing less than 15kg, is flexibly designed to accommodate loading in any road or air ambulance vehicle.

The AeroPod’s standout feature is its patient placement facility. It incorporates a full-length zipper and a patented snap-open hinge system, enabling the isolator to lay flat on the ambulance stretcher, thereby simplifying patient placement and securing.

Russell Clifton, the Managing Director of B-B-L Protect, emphasises that using an AeroPod for patient loading takes no longer than a few extra minutes compared to a standard stretcher.

Once a patient is secured inside the AeroPod using the built-in four-point harness, the unit is zipped shut. It then creates a HEPA filtered negative pressure airflow, effectively isolating the patient and protecting the ambulance crew and vehicle from contagion risks.

Sentinel Aeromed, part of the Sentinel Ambulance Service based in Eccles, Manchester, and established by British forces veteran Paul Lawrenson, is the newly appointed sales agent. Sentinel provides comprehensive services including emergency ambulances, patient transportation, medevac, and medical escort services, with a commitment to advancing Great British medicine and delivering exceptional patient care.

Upon finalising the agreement with BBL Protect, Paul Lawrenson commented, “our partnership with BBL is another exciting step to establishing Sentinel Ambulance Service and Sentinel Aeromed as market leaders in all aspect of patient transport and care; we are delighted to be working with Russell and his team and look forward to establishing Aeropod as the product of choice for those requiring to transport contagious casualties in a secure, safe environment”.

Residents invited to have their say on childhood obesity

0

Residents across Greater Manchester are being invited to share their thoughts around children’s healthy living, as childhood obesity rates continue to rise across the region.

The latest figures suggest that 39% of children living in Greater Manchester are overweight or obese by the time they get to year six (aged 10-11 years old) and 22% by reception (aged 4 or 5).

‘The Real Picture’ survey commissioned by NHS Greater Manchester (NHS GM) asks people living and working in the area to share their thoughts on what’s really behind the rise in childhood obesity.

Survey

The survey, accessed via therealpicture.org will be used to inform a wide range of partners within the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership including NHS GM, local authorities, the voluntary sector and charities, health professionals and beyond – engaging town planners, sports coaches, teachers, retailers, and many others – to help identify ideas, initiatives and interventions that resonate with residents and children and ensure a lasting and positive change towards happier, healthier lives.

Jane Pilkington, director of Population Health at NHS Greater Manchester, says: “Evidence suggests that the impacts of childhood obesity last all too predictably through life – a child who is obese at aged 5 and 10 is more likely to be obese as an adult, and more likely to experience reduced life expectancy and poor health, as a result.

“Although individual motivations play a role in accessing food and maintaining a healthy weight, we know there are several contributing factors to the increased risk of overweight and unhealthy children in Greater Manchester – many of which influenced by the environments that people move through every day.

“Nowhere is this more apparent than in urban areas across our city-region which have a high density of fast-food outlets, where residents are saturated with junk food ads.  Healthy food choices can be up to three times more expensive than unhealthy and less nutritious options.

“And that’s why this work is so important – it’s time for an honest look at childhood obesity in Greater Manchester, starting with sharing this survey far and wide and giving as many people as possible, the chance to have their say. By exploring the views of residents, we can uncover what’s really contributing to the rise in childhood obesity and work together to tackle it.”

Arsenal v Lens: Preview, expected line-ups and prediction

The State of Play

Arsenal have taken nine points from their four Group B games which may be enough to see them advance before a ball is kicked tomorrow night. If Sevilla beat PSV Eindhoven in the 1745 kick off then Mikel Arteta’s men will be guaranteed a top-two finish. Should PSV get at least a point in Spain then Arsenal will still go through with a draw against Lens.

The permutations appear favourable for Arsenal on what has been an impressive return to the Champions League. The Gunners are also on a decent run with successive wins over Sevilla, Burnley and Brentford, the latter coming at the weekend courtesy of Kai Havertz’s late goal.

Lens are also in good form having overcome a woeful start to the season. Franck Haise’s side lost four of their opening five Ligue 1 games but have turned it around to sit sixth in the table. They have also won their last two league fixtures, against Marseille and Clermont Foot.

The reverse fixture saw Lens come from behind to win 2-1.

Team News

All eyes will be on the team sheet when it’s released an hour before kick-off to see who Arteta has selected in goal. The clamour for Aaron Ramsdale to re-take the number one spot has subsided following his shaky display at Brentford – David Raya was unable to play that game against his parent club. It’s expected Raya will return tomorrow night.

Lens will have centre-half Kevin Danso available after he missed the weekend win at Clermont with a foot injury. Striker Morgan Guilavogui is suspended while Deiver Machado has an adductor injury and could miss out. Striker Elye Wahi can play as his suspension for being sent-off on Saturday only applies to domestic fixtures.

Expected Line-ups

Arsenal: Raya; Tomiyasu, Gabriel, Saliba, Zinchenko; Rice, Odegaard, Trossard; Saka, Martinelli, Jesus

Lens: Samba; Danso, Khusanov, Medina; Aguilar, El Aynaoui, Abdul Samed, Frankowski; Thomasson, Fulgini, Wahi

What they said

Mikel Arteta on if he’s enjoying managing in the Champions League
“Yes, I am enjoying it, it’s a great feeling, it makes you feel proud. It makes you feel that’s the level that we should be at. We are competing really well so let’s continue to do so.
“It’s normal that we have to prove ourselves, being back in Europe, to be the club we want to be, to get the results that tell everyone we are back in a strong way. We haven’t done that yet and that has to be done.”

Former France defender Adil Rami speaking to Amazon Prime on Elye Wahi’s red card at the weekend and his hot-headedness
“To grow, he has to make small mistakes like that. You make mistakes, you grow. But if he continues, he will look like a certain Mario Balotelli. Today we will forgive him. Franck Haise defends him [publicly], but perhaps he does not say the same things in the dressing room. We should defend him, he’s young. But if he makes the same mistakes tomorrow, it won’t happen the same way.”

When and how to watch

The game kicks off at 2000 UK time at the Emirates Stadium. It can be watched in the UK on TNT Sports 2, with the programme starting at 7pm.

Prediction

Arsenal are unbeaten at the Emirates this season and it’s tough to see Lens changing that statistic. Arteta will know finishing top of the group has additional benefits – most likely avoiding the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the round of 16 as well as having home advantage in the second leg.
Expect a comfortable Arsenal win.

Tiger Woods planning to play one event per month in 2024

Tiger Woods has set himself the target of playing one event per month in 2024 ahead of his much-anticipated return to the PGA Tour at this week’s Hero World Challenge.

Fifteen-time major winner Woods has not played competitively since the Masters in April, when he was forced to withdraw after reaggravating his plantar fasciitis in his right leg.

Woods has been affected by leg injuries since being involved in a serious car accident in February 2021, and he underwent the latest in a long series of surgeries to address arthritis in his ankle after the Masters.

Having spent over six months on the sidelines, Woods will make his return when he tees off as tournament host in the Bahamas on Thursday, and he hopes a successful outing will set him up for more regular appearances next year.

Asked about his plans for 2024 at a press conference on Tuesday, Woods said: “I think the best scenario would be maybe a tournament a month.

“I think that’s realistic. We’d have to start maybe at Genesis, then something in March, maybe the Players… The biggest events are one per month, so it sets us up for that. Now, I need to get myself ready for all that, and I think this week is a big step in that direction.

“It’s the end of the year so this sets up expectations going into the following year, so it’s a nice landing spot and a great springboard into the following year.

“Then my foundation benefits from it, so there are so many positives to take from me being able to play in this tournament. Hopefully this will be a positive step into next year.”

Woods was in visible discomfort on his last outing and was also forced to withdraw from last year’s edition of the Hero World Challenge, but he is confident his ankle will hold up after his latest procedure.

“My game feels rusty. I haven’t played in a while,” he said. “I’m excited to compete and play and I’m just as curious as all of you to see what happens!

“I haven’t done it in a while, but I can tell you this; I don’t have any of the pain that I had at Augusta or before that in my ankle.

“Other parts are taking the brunt of the load so I’m a little more sore in some other areas, but the ankle is good. So that surgery was a success.

“I’m not concerned at all about walking it. As I said, I don’t have any pain in the ankle, that’s all gone, but it’s the other parts of my body; my knee hurts, my back… the force has to go somewhere else up the chain.”

Woods also opened up on his choice to undergo ankle fusion, rather than a full replacement, saying: “In the past couple of years I’ve had a number of surgeries. At some point, I was going to have to get my ankle replaced or fused.

“The doctors weren’t expecting me to put that much force into that ankle. The ankle just went [at the Masters], it was bone-on-bone, that’s why you saw me limping and not feeling very good.

“The only way to get that fixed was to get it replaced or fused, and we went with the fusion. The next part was the hard part, six months of doing nothing. That was the hard part.

“The first couple of months were really rough, and unfortunately I’ve had the experience, I’ve been through it before. I’m here on the good side now.”

Not captain material? Fernandes unfazed by Manchester United critics Keane and Ince

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes insists he is not affected by criticism of his leadership abilities, with club legend Roy Keane among those to suggest he should be stripped of the armband.

Fernandes’ captaincy credentials have repeatedly been called into question since Erik ten Hag handed him the armband in July, amid questions over the future of previous skipper Harry Maguire.

Following October’s 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford, former Red Devils captain-turned Sky Sports pundit Keane said: “I would take the captaincy off him, 100 per cent.

“He is a talented player, no doubt about it. We’ve discussed this many times before, it was like this last season at Liverpool… his whinging, his moaning and throwing his arms up in the air constantly. It really isn’t acceptable.”

Ten Hag confident Mainoo can handle Galatasaray trip

Keane is not the only United great to question Fernandes’ suitability for the role, with Paul Ince telling talkSPORT on Monday: “I don’t know what I see in Fernandes, he is not a leader by the way he plays.”

Those criticisms were put to Fernandes at a press conference to preview Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League trip to Galatasaray on Tuesday, but the creative midfielder brushed them off.

“Obviously you don’t like to be criticised, everyone is the same, but at the same time I have to do what I think is the best for my team,” Fernandes said.

“It is quite normal when you play for Manchester United that you are going to get criticised, even if you do well or bad, if you do the wrong or the right thing.

“I just have to deal with that, it is normal since I arrived at the club.

“I know since I arrived at the club my numbers made me a target. Now not keeping the same numbers on goals and assists is sometimes a problem for me in people’s criticism, they take it from there.

“Now it’s the captaincy, there is always going to be something. Now my focus is on the team, the staff, everyone who works with me day by day, I think they are pretty happy with me.

“The way I am has been the same since I arrived at the club, it has not changed since I was made captain. I don’t think it has to change.

“I am really open with everyone so no one until now has had a problem with me. I think I should keep it like that. Everyone is pretty happy with my leadership.”
