Luke Littler rewarded for World Championship run with Premier League Darts place

Luke Littler has been included in the eight-man lineup for the 2024 edition of Premier League Darts following the 16-year-old’s stunning run to the final of the PDC World Championship.

Littler has helped to generate a new wave of interest in darts from younger generations in recent weeks, storming to the World Championship final on his first appearance at the event before falling at the last hurdle on Wednesday.

He missed a dart for a 5-2 lead in a thrilling final against Luke Humphries, who fought back to complete a 7-4 win and secure his first world title.

Having entered the tournament ranked 164th in the world, the teenager secured a £200,000 payday and moved up to 31st in the rankings as a result of his fairytale run, and he has also been rewarded with a Premier League place.

Alongside Littler and Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, Nathan Aspinall, Michael Smith, Gerwyn Price, Rob Cross and Peter Wright will also feature in the tournament, which begins on February 1.

Speaking to Sky Sports News after the lineup was announced on Thursday, Littler said: “It’s just unbelievable. Obviously I got my first ranking money from the UK Open [last March], now I’ve got £200,000 and I’m a Premier League player.

“No more development tour, this is it!

“I’m in the Premier League and well inside the top 32. This is all it’s been for these past three weeks in London… it’s been crazy to be here.”

Asked about his reaction when he received the call to confirm his selection, Littler said: “As soon as I came off stage [after the final] and did the media, my manager pulled me aside and said: ‘Do you want to do it?’

“I said to my mum and dad; ‘lets do it, it may never happen again’. Just like being the runner-up, it may never happen again. I’ve got to take every chance I can get.”

The UK TV audience for Littler’s final defeat peaked at 3.7million people, the highest ever recorded for a non-football event shown by Sky Sports.

Humphries was speaking alongside Littler on Thursday, and he believes his rival will improve even further as a result of his Premier League involvement.

“I think Luke did make the right decision,” Humphries said. “He’s a top talent in darts now and this is what you want, playing against top players in top arenas.

“Seeing how talented he already is, this is going to take his game to a new level and hopefully it can do the same for me.”

Nadal continues winning return to reach last eight in Brisbane

Rafael Nadal made it two wins from as many matches since returning from injury on Thursday, cruising into the Brisbane International quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over Jason Kubler.

Nadal was in action for just the second time after missing almost a year with a hip injury, having marked an emotional return to the court by beating Dominic Thiem in straight sets on Tuesday.

The 22-time grand slam champion started as he meant to go on, breaking in each of Kubler’s first two service games and needing just one hour and 21 minutes to clinch a 6-1 6-2 win over the Australian.

The 37-year-old was handed a time violation between sets for taking too long during a bathroom break, but he showed no signs of rustiness in another impressive win, moving well throughout and winning 80 per cent of points behind his first serve.

Nadal will face Kubler’s compatriot Jordan Thompson in the last eight on Friday as he steps up his preparations for the Australian Open, which begins on January 14.

Friday’s match against Thompson will represent Nadal’s first quarter-final at any event since Wimbledon 2022, when he beat Taylor Fritz in the last eight then was forced to withdraw ahead of his semi-final against Nick Kyrgios.

Thompson advanced to the last eight by virtue of a walkover on Thursday following Ugo Humbert’s withdrawal, while Grigor Dimitrov beat Daniel Altmaier and Rinky Hijikata overcame Tomas Machac in three sets.

Littler hoping to inspire children after remarkable run to world final

Luke Littler hopes his exploits at Alexandra Palace over the past three weeks will inspire children to take up darts.

Littler, 16, stormed through to the final of the PDC World Darts Championship, creating a wave of interest from the younger generation on social media, only to come unstuck last night against new world number one Luke Humphries.

The teenager missed a dart for a 5-2 lead which proved pivotal as Humphries hit back to complete a 7-4 win and secure his first world title.

It was a disappointing end to a fairytale story which Littler hopes will have a knock-on effect.

He told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “I have caught a load of people’s attention. It is just unbelievable. I hope I have caught lots of young people’s minds to get on a board and just try it out.

“If they don’t like it that’s fine but I’d advise them to give it a go because it is a good sport and once you get into it you’ll always love it.

“If you love the darts why don’t you get on the board and try and be like me or one of the other top professionals.”

Having entered the tournament as an unknown outside of darting circles, Littler is now a household name and he admits the scrutiny has changed him.

“I have just got to be myself and be the Luke Littler I have been here for the last three to four weeks,” he added. “It has changed me a lot, I have broke into the top 32, I have got a bit of money now, which is going to help.

“Getting into the top 32 will definitely help me qualify for pretty much every event in the year. It’s a losing start to the year, but it is also a good start to the year. I will take the positives.”

Littler will now head home to Warrington and be reunited with his beloved Xbox.

“I can’t wait to go back on my Xbox,” he said.

“I didn’t bring it because I didn’t think I would get to the final. I only practice for half an hour a day, because I get bored and have my Xbox next to me.”

To effectively reach your target audience, you must first understand who they are. This involves gathering information about their demographics, interests, behaviors, and preferences. By doing so, you can tailor your marketing efforts to meet their specific needs and preferences.

One way to gather information about your target audience is through market research. This can involve conducting surveys, focus groups, or analyzing data from social media and website analytics. By analyzing this data, you can gain insights into your target audience’s likes and dislikes, pain points, and purchasing habits.

Another way to understand your target audience is to create buyer personas. These are fictional representations of your ideal customer, based on research and data. By creating these personas, you can better understand your target audience’s motivations, goals, and challenges, and tailor your marketing efforts accordingly.

It’s also important to keep in mind that your target audience may evolve over time. As your business grows and changes, so too may your ideal customer. By regularly revisiting your target audience and updating your marketing strategies accordingly, you can ensure that you continue to effectively reach and engage your audience.

Crafting Your Message

Crafting a message that resonates with your target audience is essential for any business looking to reach out to potential customers. Here are a few tips to help you create a message that connects with your audience:

Know Your Audience

Before you start crafting your message, it is essential to understand your target audience. Research their demographics, interests, and pain points to get a better understanding of what they are looking for. This information will help you tailor your message to their needs and make it more impactful.

Be Clear and Concise

Your message should be clear and to the point. Avoid using jargon or technical language that may be unfamiliar to your audience. Use simple language that is easy to understand, and make sure your message can be easily conveyed in a few sentences.

Highlight Your Unique Selling Proposition

Your message should clearly communicate what makes your business unique. Highlight your unique selling proposition (USP) and explain how it benefits your audience. This will help differentiate your business from competitors and make it more attractive to potential customers.

Use Visuals

Visuals can be a powerful tool to help convey your message. Use images, videos, and infographics to help illustrate your message and make it more engaging. Visuals can also help break up text and make your message easier to read and understand.

Crafting a message that resonates with your target audience takes time and effort. By understanding your audience, being clear and concise, highlighting your USP, and using visuals, you can create a message that connects with potential customers and helps your business reach its target audience.

Choosing the Right Marketing Channels

When it comes to reaching your target audience, choosing the right marketing channels is crucial. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to determine which ones will be most effective for your business. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice:

1. Know Your Audience

Before selecting any marketing channels, it’s essential to understand your target audience. Consider factors such as their age, gender, income, location, interests, and behaviors. This information will help you determine which channels are most likely to reach them effectively.

2. Consider Your Budget

Marketing can be expensive, so it’s essential to consider your budget when selecting channels. Some channels, such as social media and email marketing, can be relatively inexpensive, while others, such as TV and radio advertising, can be costly. Determine how much you can afford to spend and allocate your budget accordingly.

3. Leverage Multiple Channels

While it’s important to focus on channels that are most likely to reach your target audience, it’s also a good idea to leverage multiple channels. This will help you reach a broader audience and increase your chances of success. Consider using a mix of channels, such as social media, email marketing, content marketing, and paid advertising.

4. Consider Hiring a Marketing Agency

If you’re not sure which channels to use or how to create effective marketing campaigns, consider hiring a marketing agency. A reputable agency can help you develop a comprehensive marketing strategy, select the right channels, and create compelling campaigns that resonate with your target audience.

By following these tips, you can choose the right marketing channels and reach your target audience effectively. Remember to track your results and adjust your strategy as needed to ensure ongoing success.

Engaging with Your Audience

Engaging with your audience is one of the most important steps towards building a loyal customer base. By creating a two-way conversation, you can learn more about your customers’ needs and preferences, and tailor your products or services accordingly. Here are some tips on how to effectively engage with your audience:

  1. Use social media platforms to your advantage: Social media is a powerful tool that can help you reach a wider audience. Use platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn to connect with your customers, share relevant content, and respond to their queries and feedback.
  2. Personalize your communication: Customers appreciate personalized communication that addresses their specific needs and concerns. Use their names in emails, respond to their comments on social media, and send them personalized offers and promotions.
  3. Encourage feedback: Encourage your customers to provide feedback on your products or services. This not only helps you identify areas for improvement but also shows your customers that you value their opinions and are committed to providing them with the best possible experience.
  4. Host events and webinars: Hosting events and webinars is a great way to engage with your audience and provide them with valuable information. This can help you establish yourself as an authority in your industry and build trust with your customers.

By following these tips, you can effectively engage with your audience and build a loyal customer base.

Measuring and Analyzing Results

Once you have implemented your marketing strategies and tactics, it’s essential to measure and analyze the results to determine their effectiveness. This process allows you to identify what works and what doesn’t, enabling you to make data-driven decisions for future campaigns.

One way to measure your marketing efforts is to track your website’s traffic and engagement. You can use tools like Google Analytics to monitor your website’s performance and gain insights into your audience’s behavior. By analyzing your website’s data, you can determine which pages are most popular, how long visitors stay on your site, and which pages have the highest bounce rates.

Another way to measure your marketing efforts is to track your social media engagement. You can use social media analytics tools to monitor your followers’ behavior, such as likes, comments, and shares. By analyzing this data, you can determine which posts perform the best and adjust your content strategy accordingly.

It’s also crucial to track your conversion rates, which measure how many visitors to your website or social media profiles take a desired action, such as making a purchase or filling out a form. By tracking your conversion rates, you can determine which marketing channels are most effective in driving conversions and adjust your strategies accordingly.

Overall, measuring and analyzing your marketing efforts is critical to reaching your target audience effectively. By using data to inform your decisions, you can optimize your marketing campaigns and achieve your business goals.

Manchester United pull plug on Reguilon loan as left-back returns to Tottenham

Manchester United have confirmed Sergio Reguilon will return to parent club Tottenham after the Red Devils activated a break clause in his loan deal.

United signed Reguilon on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day in September, with the Spaniard brought in to provide cover amid injuries to fellow left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Reguilon made 12 appearances throughout his time at Old Trafford, starting seven of those games, the most recent being United’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in early December.

Diogo Dalot started at left-back as United were beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with Malacia yet to play this season and Shaw sustaining another minor problem after recovering from a muscle injury which kept him out for three months.

However, with both players expected to return this month, United have taken the decision to terminate Reguilon’s loan agreement and he will now return to Spurs.

Reguilon could now be involved for Tottenham when they face United in their next Premier League game on January 14, with injuries to Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic leaving Ange Postecoglou’s side light at left-back.

While Destiny Udogie has impressed on the left side of Postecoglou’s back four, deputy Ben Davies has been forced to play as a makeshift centre-back due to injuries to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Postecoglou has spoken of the need for Spurs to add reinforcements in the January transfer window, with Genoa defender Radu Dragusin reportedly a target.

South Africa v India: Bumrah guides tourists home despite Markram heroics

India secured a share of the two-match series against South Africa after completing a remarkable seven-wicket win inside five sessions – the shortest Test match of all time – in Cape Town.

Day one saw 23 wickets fall and ended with the home side on 62 for three in their second innings, still 36 behind India’s first innings total of 153.

If the Newlands crowd thought day two would be calm in comparison, they were sadly mistaken with only Aiden Markram stemming the endless flow of wickets.

The South Africa opener started the day unbeaten on 36 and played superbly despite the carnage unfolding at the other end.

David Bedingham (11) was the first to go, from the final ball of the first over, with Kyle Verreynne (nine), Marco Jansen (11) and Keshav Maharaj (three) all following soon after as Jasprit Burmah ran through the South Africa middle order.

Bumrah was borderline unplayable on a pitch that provided plenty of assistance but he met his match in Markram. Having started out batting in conventional fashion, the 29-year-old upped the ante as he started to run out of partners.

He bludgeoned 20 runs off one Prasidh Krishna over before one big hit too many saw his downfall, skying a Mohammed Siraj delivery to Rohit Sharma for 106 from just 103 balls.

Krishna returned to snare Kagiso Rabada before, fittingly, Bumrah ended the innings by dismissing Lungi Ngidi. Bumrah finished with figures of six for 61.

India required 79 to win and, while it wasn’t without a few alarms, the result was never really in doubt with captain Sharma proving the anchor with an unbeaten 17.

Raducanu beaten by Svitolina in second round at Auckland Classic

Emma Raducanu suffered defeat in her second match since returning from injury on Thursday, losing 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 to Elina Svitolina to exit the Auckland Classic in the second round.

Having undergone wrist and ankle surgeries last May, Raducanu spent eight months on the sidelines before returning to the court this week as she builds towards an appearance at the Australian Open.

The former US Open champion overcame Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first round at Auckland to set up a meeting with second seed Svitolina, and she made a flying start by racing into a 5-1 lead in the first set.

Raducanu was pegged back and needed a tie-break to take the opener, then missed her chance of victory in another tie-break in the second set, going 3-1 up before the Ukrainian reeled off six straight points.

Svitolina never looked back from there, taking the decider in just 31 minutes with Raducanu visibly tiring.

While Svitolina will now face the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova in the Auckland quarter-finals, Raducanu’s focus will turn to the Australian Open, which starts on January 14.

Despite dropping to 301st in the world rankings during her injury lay-off, Raducanu will not have to go through qualification for the first grand slam of 2024.

She was able to enter with a special ranking of 103 due to her long-term absence, and several withdrawals – including those of Petra Kvitova, Karolina Muchova and Irina-Camelia Begu – have handed her a direct route into the main draw.

Siraj stars as India take command against South Africa

India claimed the upper hand at the end of a chaotic first day of the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

The tourists need to win to level the two-match series and they dominated the opening session, dismissing the hosts for just 55 before lunch – Mohammad Siraj taking six for 15 in a stunning display of fast bowling.

India looked set to press home their advantage in the afternoon session and were coasting along at 153 for four only to lose six wickets for no runs, a remarkable collapse that had never been seen before in 2522 Test matches.

In their second innings, the Proteas moved to 62 for three by the close – still trailing by 36 runs.

Opener Aiden Markram finally brought some sanity to proceedings with an unbeaten 36 but Dean Elgar, captaining South Africa on his final Test appearance, was back in the shed, dismissed twice in a day for a combined total of 16.

Only three other players moved past 30 – Indian trio Rohit Sharma (39), Shubman Gill (36) and Virat Kohli (46).

Asked if he would opt to bat again having won the toss, Elgar said: “I didn’t know it would play in that way, with the naked eye it did not look so bad.

“But it’s one of those wickets where if you knuckle down, you never know what can happen.”

Elgar believes if his side can set India a victory target of just 100, South Africa would be right in the contest.

“I would take 100 (victory target) all day,” he added. “When our bowlers click they can rip through any batting line-up and on this wicket that is possible.”

Manchester United’s January transfer targets: Four reinforcements to revitalise their struggling season

As Manchester United navigates through a season marred by inconsistency and underwhelming performances, the January transfer window represents a crucial opportunity for manager Erik ten Hag to reinforce his squad.

The Red Devils have experienced setbacks on multiple fronts, exiting the Champions League in the group stage and bowing out of the League Cup in the round of 16.

With a current seventh-place standing in the English top flight, drastic measures are needed if Man United are to become a side favourable in the second half of the season with those seeking a bet on Premier League in 2023/24.

Here, we explore four potential signings that could inject vitality into the Manchester United squad.

Jean-Clair Todibo

Amid defensive frailties that have plagued Manchester United, the pursuit of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo seems a logical step.

The French international has been on the club’s radar since the summer, and his commanding presence in the centre-back position could provide the much-needed solidity at the back.

While Todibo might command a fee of around £40 million, Manchester United faces competition from Tottenham and Newcastle for his signature.

Securing Todibo’s services could be a transformative move for a team that has struggled to maintain defensive consistency.

Lois Openda

Despite the hefty summer investment in Rasmus Hojlund, Manchester United’s attacking prowess has been underwhelming.

Lois Openda, the RB Leipzig forward, presents a potential solution to bolster the frontline.

The 23-year-old Belgian has showcased goal-scoring prowess in the Bundesliga, with 11 goals in 16 appearances.

Given United’s struggles in the final third, Openda could provide the spark needed to reignite the attack.

While his price tag is expected to exceed £70 million, the investment could be worthwhile if he proves to be the missing piece in the offensive puzzle.

Raphinha

Barcelona’s Raphinha, formerly of Leeds United, emerges as a tantalising option to address Manchester United’s issues on the wings.

Signed for around £55 million in 2022, the Brazilian winger has faced challenges adapting to La Liga.

With Barcelona reportedly open to offers in January, Raphinha’s previous Premier League experience and his dynamic style of play could inject much-needed flair into the Red Devils’ attack.

United may capitalise on the situation, bringing in the 27-year-old to add a fresh dimension to their offensive strategy.

Guido Rodriguez

Amidst underwhelming performances from summer signing Mason Mount and loanee Sofyan Amrabat, coupled with the potential departure of Casemiro, Manchester United could revisit their interest in Guido Rodriguez.

The 29-year-old helped Argentine win the 2022 World Cup and has garnered acclaim as one of La Liga’s finest midfielders at Real Betis.

With Rodriguez’s contract expiring in the summer, United could negotiate a cut-price deal in January — providing a much-needed boost to the midfield and potentially addressing the defensive void left by Casemiro and Amrabat.

If Manchester United can come out of the busy festive period, that includes a trip Nottingham Forest — one of the favourites in the Premier League relegation odds — relatively unscathed, and Ten Hag can bring in some fresh faces in January, then there is perhaps still hope they can turn their season around.

McIlroy wants LIV to follow IPL format

Rory McIlroy would consider playing in a LIV event if it copied the format set out by cricket’s Indian Premier League.

The IPL is the T20 franchise tournament with the greatest global appeal, attracting the best cricketers from around the world every year.

LIV currently has a tour that rivals the PGA Tour, although talks are ongoing regarding a merger that was initially announced in June with a December 31 deadline having recently passed without agreement.

McIlroy has made no secret of his opposition to Saudi-backed LIV, although he has come to accept it is not going to go away and said he would be willing to play in a LIV event providing it met certain criteria.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, he said: “I would love LIV to turn into the IPL of golf.

“They take two months of the calendar. You go and do this team stuff and [it’s] a bit different and is a different format.

“If they were to do something like that I would say ‘yeah that sounds like fun’ because you are working within the ecosystem.”

LIV continue to throw enormous sums of money at the sport’s top players with Jon Rahm the latest to be enticed by the Saudi riches having agreed a deal worth a reported £450million to leave the PGA Tour.

Rahm’s motive for the move, or so he claimed, was to “grow the game of golf”, but McIlroy thinks the sport would be better served by spending that money elsewhere.

He added: “The thing I have come to realise is if you have got people, or a sovereign wealth fund, wanting to spend money in your sport that is ultimately a good thing.

“But you just want to get them to spend it the right way and spend it on things that are important in the game.

“Instead of giving someone $100m why don’t you put $50m into grassroots programmes for the R&A or USGA? Spending that money to actually grow the game and not just buy talent would be a way better way.”

Northern Irishman McIlroy has been critical of the players that have defected to LIV, although he refused to dig out Rahm, who backtracked spectacularly on previous declarations to make the move at the end of last year.

He said: “Jon is smart and sees things coming together [a merger] at some point.

“He said ‘OK, I will take a lot of upfront money – which is his prerogative – and if things come together I will play LIV for a year, come back on the tour and play team golf on the fringes’.

“It is a smart business move.”
