Manchester United pull plug on Reguilon loan as left-back returns to Tottenham

Manchester United have confirmed Sergio Reguilon will return to parent club Tottenham after the Red Devils activated a break clause in his loan deal.

United signed Reguilon on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day in September, with the Spaniard brought in to provide cover amid injuries to fellow left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Reguilon made 12 appearances throughout his time at Old Trafford, starting seven of those games, the most recent being United’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in early December.

Diogo Dalot started at left-back as United were beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with Malacia yet to play this season and Shaw sustaining another minor problem after recovering from a muscle injury which kept him out for three months.

However, with both players expected to return this month, United have taken the decision to terminate Reguilon’s loan agreement and he will now return to Spurs.

Reguilon could now be involved for Tottenham when they face United in their next Premier League game on January 14, with injuries to Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic leaving Ange Postecoglou’s side light at left-back.

While Destiny Udogie has impressed on the left side of Postecoglou’s back four, deputy Ben Davies has been forced to play as a makeshift centre-back due to injuries to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Postecoglou has spoken of the need for Spurs to add reinforcements in the January transfer window, with Genoa defender Radu Dragusin reportedly a target.
