Pistorius released from prison on parole

Oscar Pistorius was released from prison on parole this morning, nearly 11 years after murdering his former girlfriend.

The South African Paralympian, dubbed the Blade Runner for his carbon-fibre prosthetic legs, was found guilty of killing Reeva Steenkamp after shooting her through a bathroom door at his home in Pretoria in February 2013. Pistorius has always maintained his innocence, claiming it was an accident as he thought she was an intruder.

He was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2016 after an initial sentence of six years was overturned for being “shockingly too lenient” but, having served half his term, he is now eligible for parole and was granted his freedom this morning.

The parole comes with strict conditions. He is unable to drink alcohol and cannot speak to the media until the sentence comes to an end in 2029.

The parole board also demanded Pistorius undergo an anger management course and programmes on gender-based violence as part of his release agreement.

Ms Steenkamp’s mother June accepted the decision, but said in a statement: “Has there been justice for Reeva? Has Oscar served enough time? There can never be justice if your loved one is never coming back, and no amount of time served will bring Reeva back. We, who remain behind, are the ones serving a life sentence.”

She added: “My only desire is that I will be allowed to live my last years in peace with my focus remaining on the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, to continue Reeva’s legacy.”

The case attracted worldwide attention due to Pistorius’ pin-up image in his native country, his achievements on the track that gave the Paralympics a greater global appeal and his ability to overcome adversity.

The 37-year-old had both legs amputated below the knee at 11 months old due to a congenital defect.

That didn’t prevent him from competing in the Paralympics as well as the 2012 London Olympics – the first double amputee to take part in the able-bodied version of the Games.

0

Signage specialist FASTSIGNS Bolton, is helping a bakery chain with its plans to expand beyond the North West.

Carrs Pasties, based in Bolton, has been serving freshly-baked, high-quality goods to locals since 1938.

Traditionally a food manufacturer, in recent years it has evolved its business strategy to include a reseller model, distributing its products to intermediaries such as convenience stores and petrol forecourts.

Bolton’s team of signage specialists were tasked with expanding the bakery’s brand presence to locations including Nottingham, Birmingham and Hereford, as well as supporting its business expansion model which aims to increase revenue and grow customer reach.

FASTSIGNS Bolton conducted several site surveys across the UK – from Cumbria to South Wales – to establish the feasibility of Carrs Pasties brand launching into other territories.

Branding solutions

The team of seven then designed, manufactured and installed a full suite of branding solutions, including bollard covers, window graphics, sign trays and custom magnetic packs for pastie warmers, at both new strategic locations and existing retailer sites.

Since the project’s completion, FASTSIGNS’ solutions have improved Carrs Pasties’ brand awareness in locations beyond the North West, while also increasing sales for its Bolton-based resellers by 25 percent.

Its work with Carrs Pasties was recently the recipient of the Project of the Year Award at the annual FASTSIGNS convention, hosted at St George’s Park in Burton-upon-Trent, commending the Bolton team’s work to raise the profile of a regional brand.

Nick Ratcliffe, director of FASTSIGNS Bolton, said: “The nation loves baked goods, so working on this project to make more people – across the UK – aware of the delicious products that Carrs Pasties deliver, has been a real pleasure. Getting a brand recognised on a national stage is an amazing achievement; and being a part of their ambitious growth plans has been hugely rewarding.

“No matter what industry, signage is crucial; it provides clear and effective communication, guidance, information and enhances safety in various environments. Creating brand awareness and supporting brands with their growth strategies, from a signage perspective, is just a small part of the myriad of signage solutions that we have on offer here at FASTSIGNS Bolton.”

Dangers of open water campaigner receives MBE

0

A woman who has tirelessly campaigned about the dangers of open waters following the death of her son, has been awarded an MBE.

Debbie Ann Turnbull (pictured) who is originally from Warrington, was hailed for her services as a campaigner and educator of young people and their families.

She established the River And Sea Sense (RASS), as a non-profit organisation with charitable objectives in September 2008 in Llandudno, and is overwhelmed by the announcement.

Debbie, who now lives in North Wales, said: “This MBE means the world to me in that I will be able to promote my water safety messages far and wide to save more lives.  I feel it adds credibility to my work and I hope that it will attract more working partnerships and potential speaking opportunities”

Debbie first began speaking in schools in 2006 after the funeral of her beloved son Christopher, who sadly drowned age 15 while swimming in open water with friends.

It is her mission to educate young people and families to save lives through educating about the dangers of open water – and to support families who have lost a child or family member to drowning.

So far she has spoken to and educated over 700,000 young people to date about river and sea safety. She plans to deliver training to teachers in another 60 schools across the UK in 2024. She will speak at many networking events and professional conferences too both as a water safety educator and advocate including as an inspirational mother with a powerful story to tell ‘From Loss To Legacy’.

Debbie also plans to write a book with the same title to support families who have faced challenges and to inspire young women and girls to become whoever they want to be.

Multi-million pound repairs underway to Rochdale bridge

Final preparations are underway for £4 million of repairs to start on Queen’s Park Bridge by Heywood company, BDB Special Projects Ltd.

The company was appointed late last year, following a competitive tendering process, and work to repair the 131 metre structure on Queen’s Park Road will start on Monday.

The bridge is 91 years old and in need of repair to ensure it can continue to serve residents and motorists for decades to come.

Vital repairs will be carried out on the concrete underneath the bridge, which runs over the River Roch, and the parapets will be replaced. The road on the bridge will also be resurfaced.

Concrete barriers which separate the pavement from the road, will be replaced with new kerbs which will be less obtrusive and place less weight onto the bridge, while still offering protection for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Restoration

The project, which is expected to take around 12 months to complete, will also involve the restoration of ornate steel lighting columns, which were removed after falling into a state of disrepair.

They will be recreated by specialists in their original green and gold colours, before being reinstated on the bridge.

The bridge will remain open to traffic throughout the work, but it will be operating on lights, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for their journeys.

Occasional full closures will take place, with the first of these due to take place overnight on Monday when the bridge will be closed between 8pm and 6am, with a fully signed diversion route in place.

Ben Dobson, director at BDB Special Projects Limited, said: “We’re aware that these changes will cause some disruption, but it’s a very old structure and these repairs are vital if the bridge is to continue operating well into the future. We’ve letter dropped residents and businesses in the area, as well as the schools along Queen’s Park Road, and regular updates will be communicated as the works progress.

“Although we work all over the country, it’s particularly satisfying to deliver this project on our doorstep in an area we know so well. Many of our staff live in the Heywood area and we also intend to use local companies for the supply of materials, equipment and sub-contractors where possible.”

Rooney could still manage Manchester United despite Birmingham axe, claims Berbatov

Wayne Rooney will recover from his Birmingham City exit and could still one day manage Manchester United, according to his former Red Devils strike partner Dimitar Berbatov.

Birmingham appointed United great Rooney following their dismissal of John Eustace in October, with the Blues then sixth in the Championship following an impressive start to the season.

However, Rooney only oversaw two victories in 15 games at the helm before being sacked on Tuesday, with Birmingham slipping to 20th in the table after losing nine of their matches under him.

Berbatov, who helped United win two Premier League titles and reach two UEFA Champions League finals between 2008 and 2012, believes his former team-mate did not have enough time to implement his own style at St Andrew’s, but accepts the Blues’ results were not good enough.

“It’s a very tricky situation. Birmingham were sixth when Wazza took over, and now they’re 20th in the table,” the former striker told Betfair.

“It’s a major disappointment to go from the top six to 20th and the statistics speak for themselves – he only won twice in 15 matches. It’s difficult to defend that.

“On the other hand, he did not have the time to prove himself. You need to get the results first to give yourself time to build your vision. You can’t build on your vision while going through bad results. You don’t get time so easily in football.

“Maybe if he was given more time he would have turned things around, but again, the results are the most important thing in modern football. It’s a pity.”

Despite Rooney’s struggles with Birmingham, which came after he failed to lead D.C. United to the MLS Cup Playoffs in his only full campaign as a coach in the United States, Berbatov believes he could still enjoy a long and successful career in the dugout.

Indeed, Berbatov sees no reason why Rooney cannot repair his reputation to the level where he is considered for the top job at Old Trafford.

“I sympathise with him because I know he wants to be a manager and one day maybe he’ll be the manager of United – I still stick to that,” Berbatov said.

“His time at Birmingham shows every footballer who’d like to go into management that even if you’re a big name, it can’t save you from the sack.”

Ten Hag holds “positive” talks with Ratcliffe at Manchester United

Erik ten Hag has held “positive” talks with new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe regarding the way forward for Manchester United.

Ratcliffe’s deal to buy 25 per cent of United was confirmed on Christmas Eve and Ten Hag has spoken previously of his optimism that they will enjoy a productive working relationship.

And while talks between the pair were delayed due to the busy Christmas schedule, the Dutchman has now had the chance to sit down with Ratcliffe and discuss their long-term visions.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s FA Cup third-round clash at Wigan, Ten Hag said: “Very positive [talks], I have to say. We had a long meeting, so many hours we sit together, on many issues we were on the same page, very positive from both sides.

“I can say that it was a very constructive meeting and we’re looking forward to working with each other.”

Asked if fans can expect any noticeable changes in the short term, he added: “I think it’s very shortly [early] and also we have to let it settle down, they’re just coming in, introducing themselves.

“They have good ideas, we have to see what we can integrate. In togetherness we will work, but after one day you can’t tell that.

“They have given me a few [of their ideas], we have had our debates about strategies and I think we will come together.”

Ten Hag confirmed one-year options on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal had been activated as expected while talks were ongoing regarding the futures of Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial, both of whom are out of contract at the end of the season.

On Martial and Varane, he added: “I think that is an internal discussion between the club and the players.”

Ten Hag was giving nothing away regarding Jadon Sancho’s future with the out-of-favour winger believed to be close to a loan move back to his previous club Borussia Dortmund.

“I can’t say anything about that,” he said. “We have to wait and see how things are going. When we have news, we will tell you.”

Goalkeeper Andre Onana will be available for the trip to Wigan despite his inclusion in the Cameroon squad for the African Cup of Nations, although it remains to be seen if he can play against Tottenham on January 14.

“We’re talking with the Cameroon federation, it was an issue during the talks with Andre when he came in here,” said Ten Hag. “It’s constructive. We will see. I don’t know yet [for Spurs] but he will be here for the game against Wigan.”
