Safety in every pane: Practical advantages of tempered glass

In our daily lives, we interact with glass in many forms. Whether it’s the windows of our homes, the screen of our smartphones, or the windshield of our cars, glass is a constant presence. However, not all glass is created equal.

One type of glass that stands out for its superior safety and durability features is tempered glass. This article will delve into the practical advantages of tempered glass, with a focus on the product from the leading provider, JerseyTemperedGlass.

Accident prevention: The significance of tempered glass in minimising injury risks

The use of tempered glass is a crucial factor in preventing accidents and minimising injury risks. When compared to regular glass, the resilience of JerseyTemperedGlass is remarkably superior. This is due to the unique process it undergoes, which involves heating the glass to an extremely high temperature and then cooling it rapidly. The result is a glass that is four to five times stronger than regular, untreated glass.

But the strength of tempered glass is just one aspect of its safety profile. Equally important is the way it breaks. Unlike regular glass, which shatters into sharp, dangerous shards, tempered glass breaks into small, relatively harmless pebble-like pieces. This significantly reduces the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. Whether it’s a stray baseball, a fallen tree branch, or a severe weather event, JerseyTemperedGlass can withstand impacts that would shatter ordinary glass, protecting people and property.

Moreover, the use of tempered glass is not limited to just windows. It is also commonly found in shower doors, glass partitions, and even furniture. Anywhere there is a risk of human impact, tempered glass is the safe, sensible choice.

Security features: How tempered glass enhances safety in high-risk environments

In addition to accident prevention, tempered glass also offers enhanced security features. Its increased strength makes it more resistant to break-ins, a critical consideration for businesses and homeowners alike. JerseyTemperedGlass offers an additional layer of protection, providing peace of mind in high-risk environments.

Another security advantage of tempered glass is its resistance to heat. In the event of a fire, regular glass can shatter, creating a dangerous situation and potentially allowing the fire to spread more rapidly. Tempered glass, on the other hand, can withstand higher temperatures and is less likely to break, helping to contain the fire and buy critical time for evacuation or firefighting efforts.

Lastly, because of its strength and durability, tempered glass is also an effective deterrent against vandalism. It can withstand impacts that would damage or destroy regular glass, making it a smart choice for public spaces or areas prone to vandalism.

Childproofing spaces: Creating family-friendly environments with the safety of tempered glass

Creating a safe, family-friendly environment is a top priority for many homeowners, and tempered glass can play a significant role in achieving this goal. With its superior strength and safety features, JerseyTemperedGlass is an excellent choice for childproofing spaces.

Children, with their boundless energy and curiosity, are often at risk of accidents involving glass. Whether it’s running into a glass door or knocking over a glass table, these incidents can result in serious injuries if the glass shatters. With tempered glass, these risks are significantly minimised. If broken, the glass crumbles into small, dull pieces, rather than sharp shards.

Moreover, tempered glass can also be used in items such as glass-fronted cabinets, glass tables, and even glass railings. By using tempered glass in these applications, parents can create a stylish, modern home without compromising on safety.

Commercial compliance: Meeting safety standards in public spaces through the use of tempered glass

For commercial spaces, safety is not just a moral obligation, but a legal one as well. Businesses must comply with a variety of safety standards and regulations, many of which pertain to the use of glass. By choosing JerseyTemperedGlass, businesses can ensure they are meeting these standards without sacrificing aesthetics or functionality.

Building codes often require the use of safety glass in certain applications, such as doors, adjacent windows, and certain types of enclosures. Tempered glass meets these requirements, offering a compliant solution that doesn’t compromise on style or clarity.

In addition, the use of tempered glass can also contribute to a business’s overall risk management strategy. By reducing the risk of injury, businesses can potentially lower their liability insurance premiums, adding to the bottom line.

In conclusion, the practical advantages of tempered glass extend beyond its strength and durability. Its superior safety features make it an excellent choice for accident prevention, enhanced security, childproofing spaces, and commercial compliance. Whether you’re a homeowner, a business owner, or a parent, choosing JerseyTemperedGlass is a smart investment in safety.

Coady concerned for ‘top lad’ Rashford

Conor Coady is mystified by Marcus Rashford’s current struggles and believes there may be “something more to it”.

Rashford missed training on Friday after being pictured in a Belfast nightclub on Thursday night and was subsequently left out of Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s 4-2 FA Cup win at Newport County.

Talks on Monday between club and player have resolved the matter with a United statement saying Rashford had taken “responsibility for his actions” and was available for Thursday’s trip to Wolves.

It’s not Rashford’s first indiscretion this season and Coady finds it hard to marry this version of the 26-year-old with the one he knows from their time together on England duty.

The Leicester City defender told Radio Five Live’s Monday Night Club: “Seeing him like this doesn’t fit, it doesn’t seem right to me. Something is there that we don’t know about.

“You see the stories coming out and wonder what’s going on? Something’s happening. To know him and realise how much of a top lad he is, you wonder ‘is there something more to it?’”

Coady also believes United need to do better to keep these disciplinary matters in-house.

He added: “These things don’t get out at other football clubs, they only seem to get out at Manchester United.

“Whenever we read these things, they always seem to come out at Man United.”

Two men jailed after spending stolen cash on trips abroad

Two armed men who broke into shops to place explosives under ATM machines, have been put behind bars.

Ben Thompson (36) of Kentworthy Lane, Wythenshawe has been jailed for 20 years, and Wesley Shepherd (40) of Thirsk Avenue, Sale has been jailed for 18 years and eight months.

They both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and cause explosion likely to endanger property and life at an earlier hearing.

The man would drive stolen cars to their venues of choice before entering three different premises in Greater Manchester and one in Staffordshire, before threatening staff in an attempt to grab cash.

Between April 2023 – July 2023, they stole almost £160,000, and caused tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage to the businesses.

Jetting off

After stealing the cash, they were spotted in Manchester Airport, jetting off to Malaga, Egypt, and Mexico.

Their risky business came to an end in September when police caught up with them. After witnessing the men in a car together in Sale, armed police moved in to arrest them.

Shepherd and Thompson ditched the car and ran to evade police, but they discarded a rucksack, in which officers found high visibility vests, gloves, a screwdriver, tape, and a smoke flare.

The duo were arrested shortly after, Thompson (pictured left) on the forecourt of a supermarket in Hulme, and Shepherd (pictured right) at his mum’s house in Northenden.

Diligent investigation

Detective sergeant Rich McCorry from GMP Serious Organised Crime Group said: “These men had no regard for the safety of the public in their endeavour to make some fast cash. This type of behaviour is intolerable and the lasting impact that such an unprovoked attack can have on a victim is huge.

“Following a diligent investigation with specialist colleagues from across Greater Manchester and Staffordshire Police, we were able to link the crimes and now two dangerous, reckless men are behind bars for a long time.”

Kompany: Relentlessness part of Manchester City’s DNA

Vincent Kompany sees relentlessness as part of Manchester City’s DNA and does not expect that to change any time soon, but he insists Burnley will not travel to the Etihad Stadium as a beaten side on Wednesday.

City have been in great form recently, going unbeaten through their last 10 games across all competitions and winning nine of those.

Pep Guardiola’s treble winners are five points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool with a game in hand, while they are also favourites to defend their FA Cup and Champions League trophies.

City have also been buoyed by Kevin De Bruyne’s return from injury in recent weeks, while prolific striker Erling Haaland could face Burnley after missing their last 10 matches with a foot problem.

Former City captain Kompany, meanwhile, is desperate for results as his Burnley team battle for survival, with the Clarets currently sitting 19th in the table, five points adrift of 17th-placed Everton.

Asked if he sees City’s form as ominous for their competitors, Kompany – who made 360 appearances for City in 11 years at the Etihad – said: “I think it’s been like this for the last six or seven years.

“It’s the way the club is, and I don’t really foresee that changing in the future. I think that’s still there and it’s going to remain.

“But the way I try to approach it is that winning is what everyone sees, but I like to think you can have this in your culture, in your building [without winning].

“I wouldn’t like to think there’s any less relentlessness about anything we’re doing. We don’t have the same outcome at the moment but that’s something to aspire to. If you have that kind of culture and attitude, eventually good things will happen.”

Asked specifically about Haaland’s potential return to action, Kompany said Burnley are simply focused on what they can do to stop City as a collective.

“We can throw out names and the list goes on, so for me, it’s a Premier League game,” Kompany said. “Nobody can ever doubt the quality they have, they’re a phenomenal team.

“But you can’t start these games already defeated, even though the rest of the world – rightly so – will have an idea about what the outcome will be.

“I try to look at it this way; it’s not many times that you get the chance to play against what is probably the best team in the world.

“Whatever they bring, we have to try to make a game out of it and try to show the best side of our game, that’s the ambition.”

Neville urges Rashford to knuckle down to avoid unwanted reputation

Gary Neville has urged Marcus Rashford to improve his “choices and his timing” after another turbulent few days for the Manchester United striker.

Rashford was left out of United’s squad for their 4-2 win over Newport County in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, with his absence initially being put down to illness.

However, boss Erik ten Hag suggested there was more to it when he said there was an “internal matter” at play after United’s victory at Rodney Parade.

Rashford was pictured in a Belfast nightclub on Wednesday with the club reportedly aware of that trip, but he was also seen out in the city on Thursday night, just hours before he was due to attend training.

Having called in sick on Friday, and missed the game at the weekend, Rashford held talks with the club yesterday, after which a statement was released which claimed the matter was now closed after the England international took “responsibility for his actions”.

Rashford has managed just four goals in 26 appearances in all competitions for United this season and has drawn criticism for some lacklustre displays.

Former United full-back Neville believes it’s time the 26-year-old knuckled down and started producing on the pitch.

He told BBC Breakfast: “To me, going out for a drink or going out for a night out is something that every football player will do and should do so I’ve got no problem with that whatsoever. They need to enjoy themselves.

“It’s just all about choices and timing. Manchester United have just had a winter break. They’ve had a couple of weeks off so there was a better moment for him to choose to go out. I would say, go out and have your moment where you relax with your friends, but your timing has to be right.”

It is not the first time Rashford has stepped out of line since Ten Hag took charge.

In December 2022, he was dropped from United’s starting line-up for the trip to Wolves after being late to a team meeting, though he came off the bench to score the only goal in a 1-0 win for the Red Devils.

And in November, he was also dropped to the bench for their EFL Cup defeat to Newcastle United after celebrating his birthday in a nightclub just a few hours after Ten Hag’s team were thrashed 3-0 by neighbours Manchester City.

Neville added: “Marcus himself knows – he’s an experienced player now, we’re not talking about a young lad – but he’s done it a couple of times in the last few months.

“I’ve always seen Marcus as being really responsible, a good professional and someone who works hard every single day. I know he’s going through a dip in form at this moment in time but it’s happened twice and it can sometimes become your personality if you’re not careful.

“If you do it too many times people can start saying, ‘what’s happening in his life?’ He just needs to relax, calm down, choose when to go out and get back to playing football at the levels we know he can.”

Collaboration and growth for SLR as Manchester office opens

A wealth of environmental and sustainability services have been the twin drivers behind SLR Consulting’s new Manchester office.

The new base in Dale Street, within the Northern Quarter, can host 100 staff and will consolidate the consultancy’s multiple locations in the city into a single hub with teams from SLR and Optimised Environments (OPEN), which it acquired in 2022.

The office will help increase the sustainability consultancy’s support to new and existing clients and projects in the region, which include the Red Bank masterplan, the £400m mixed-use scheme at First Street, the New Carrington community in Trafford, and several regeneration projects for Manchester City Council.

The office represents a full integration of the teams from SLR, OPEN and Vectos – a transport planning and infrastructure design consultancy which merged into SLR in 2021 – supporting SLR’s collaborative spirit and its ability to offer clients both sustainability advisory support and technical project delivery across all sectors.

Jaimie Ferguson, director at OPEN, said: “Since becoming part of SLR, we have combined our collective skills, creating a team with remarkable creativity and design qualities that complement already strong technical and environmental abilities.

“This new office marks the next stage in our integration, and we believe it will allow us to increase our sharing of knowledge and expertise, which can only benefit our clients.”

Adam Smith, transport planning director at SLR, said: “Our transport planning and infrastructure design teams already work closely with OPEN and other SLR environmental specialists, but bringing together the teams into one collaborative space will not only mean more integration and information sharing, but will reflect the breadth of what we can offer to clients, driving better quality.”

England hero Hartley: India should ‘put respect on my name’

England spinner Tom Hartley hopes India will put more “respect” on his name after he bowled his team to a remarkable victory on his Test debut in Hyderabad.

Hartley posted figures of 7-62 in India’s second innings, the best recorded by an England spinner on debut since 1933, as Ben Stokes’ team sealed a stunning victory on day four of the opener.

Taking full advantage of the extra half-hour of play, England completed one of the most memorable away wins in their history, triumphing by 28 runs after finding themselves with a 190-run first-innings deficit.

Hartley’s heroic second innings came after he went 2-131 in the first, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal belting his first delivery in Test cricket for a six as the England man leaked 63 runs in his first nine overs with the ball.

Speaking to BBC Sport about his recovery following a tough first day, Hartley said: “I felt ready for it. I know my ability on spinning wickets. I knew I could do well.

“I was so nervous that first day. Then it was frustration that I was the bowler getting picked on, I was thinking whether this was going to be the story for the whole series.

“I’ve been hit for a lot of sixes in my career, so I don’t let these things get on top of me. The background I’ve had is to not let yourself get down. I just want to be a fighter and throw some punches back.”

Having inflicted what was just India’s fourth defeat in their last 47 home Tests, Hartley believes the hosts will be far more wary of his talents in the second Test, which begins on Thursday.

“To come out in the fourth innings and do what I did, hopefully they can put a bit more respect on my name and go forward from there,” said Hartley.

“Coming out here, I was just looking to get a game or a couple of games. I might now have a big role, but I’m more than ready for that. I want more of it.”

PDSA launches campaign to stop pets piling on pounds

PDSA says the UK pet obesity crisis needs ‘urgent attention’ as vet teams estimate almost 10 millions cats and dogs are overweight.

It comes as the vet charity launches its annual ‘Big Weigh In’ campaign in a bid to tackle the growing problem head on.

PDSA, in partnership with Royal Canin, is inviting pet owners to book free weight checks at participating vet practices nationwide throughout February and March. More than 500 vet practices are signed up and pet owners can schedule their free appointment here: pdsa.org.uk/WeighUp

PDSA vet nurse Nina Downing said: “We’re all guilty of over indulging at times, but worryingly, 36% of dog owners admit to regularly giving their pet leftovers.

“And while a tasty treat now and then, when considered amidst the rest of their food intake, won’t harm your pet, regularly overfeeding them could lead to serious health problems.

“Since our Animal Wellbeing Report launched over a decade ago, overweight and obese pets have always been an issue but almost half of veterinary professionals (49%) say they’ve seen an increase in pet obesity in the last two years. And a quarter say obesity is one of the top five welfare issues in dogs.

“But with more and more people owning a pet these days, especially dogs, we’re now at a point where it needs urgent attention before it gets even worse.”

Danger of overweight pets

Overweight pets are more likely to suffer from health problems such as diabetes and urinary tract disease – symptoms tend to develop when they are younger and are harder to manage.

Excess fat can also worsen other health problems – such as arthritis and breathing difficulties – as well as increase anaesthetic and surgical risks, all of which could negatively affect your pet’s quality of life.

Dr Lauren Hayes, MRCVS, a veterinarian at Royal Canin, said: “We’re once again partnering with the PDSA on its Big Weigh In campaign to educate pet owners on the important role weight has on the overall health, and therefore happiness, of our pets.

“As well as booking an appointment, there are some simple measures that can help your pet get to a healthier weight. I would always advise using a digital scale to weigh your pet’s food, as it is surprising how easy it can be to overfeed.

“Consider swapping to low calorie treats or halving the treat to reduce caloric intake. At the appointment, you can also ask your vet about switching to a diet developed for weight loss, such as our satiety nutrition; which has been developed by experts to support safe weight loss while being high in fibre and contains the right macronutrients to keep your pet satisfied.”

Manchester United consider Rashford disciplinary matter closed

Manchester United say they have dealt with “an internal disciplinary matter” concerning forward Marcus Rashford and now consider the episode closed.

Rashford returned to Manchester on Friday morning before reporting that he was too ill to train.

In a widely reported statement issued on Monday, United said: “Marcus has taken responsibility for his actions.

“This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed.”

Rashford will now be available for selection when United travel to Molineux for their next Premier League fixture against Wolves on Thursday.

This is not Rashford’s first indiscretion since Ten Hag took charge; in December 2022, he was dropped from United’s starting lineup for another trip to Wolves after being late to a team meeting, though he came off the bench to score the only goal in a 1-0 win for the Red Devils.

Last November, he was also dropped from United’s side for their EFL Cup defeat to Newcastle United after celebrating his birthday in a nightclub just a few hours after Ten Hag’s team were thrashed 3-0 by neighbours Manchester City.

Rashford has only scored four goals in 26 appearances across all competitions this season, having netted 30 times in 56 games during Ten Hag’s first campaign at the helm.

‘Gas leak’ call results in seizure of £27,000 in illegal goods

0

Police stumbled upon £27,000 of illegal goods and cash in Rochdale – after initially being called over a carbon monoxide leak.

At around 11.30pm on Sunday, a gas engineer was called to reports of a potential gas leak in Osborne Street –but was turned away by those in the address.

Police were called and officers attended the property.

After it was made safe, numerous suspected illegal goods and products were discovered, including items which had been thrown out of the window when officers arrived.

In total, officers seized:

  • 1400 vapes, with a value of approximately £14,000
  • 80 pouches of tobacco, with a value of approximately £3,000
  • 20 packs of cigarettes, with a value of approximately £240
  • Approximately £10,000 in cash.

In custody

Three men, aged 24, 29, and 32, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of money laundering and attempting to sell counterfeit goods. They remain in custody for questioning.

GMP has been working on cracking down on illegal vapes and products across the force and works closely with partners including Trading Standards to ensure consumers are receiving fully regulated products.

Vapes which have not been through the rigorous assessments as set by UK regulators could pose a health risk, and officers work hard to keep them off the streets.

Inspector Oliver Bailey said: “Sunday’s finds were a great success in our ongoing work to clamp down on illegal vapes being distributed across Rochdale. In recent months, we have taken thousands off the streets, made numerous arrests, and built a wider intelligence picture on how and where vapes are distributed.

“Illicit vapes which have not been through the appropriate regulatory system may present a health risk and I am delighted that we have stopped them from getting out to the public.

“If you have any information about illegal goods – whether that’s tobacco, cigarettes, vapes or anything else – then please do get in touch with us. You can report information to us by contacting 101, visiting gmp.police.uk, or by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
