Oldham IT support firm celebrates 20 years in business with 20 good deeds

To celebrate an amazing 20 years in business, Oldham tech firm, Aspect IT, committed to doing 20 good deeds.

Upon announcement of the initiative in August, the company said it would positively impact the lives of those in their community.

Fast forward to now and the IT business has just completed its 10th good deed, marking the halfway point on the journey.

Director for Aspect IT, Peter Dorotiak, said: “We’ve always been passionate about giving back and making a positive change so the 20 Good Deeds Initiative felt like the perfect way to celebrate the huge milestone that is our 20th anniversary.”

Since starting the initiative back in August last year, the firm has supported a variety of
people and groups in Springhead, as well as further afield in Ashton and Huddersfield.

From food banks to animal shelters to various charities dedicated to supporting vulnerable
members of the community (including older people, families with babies in crisis and adults
with learning difficulties), Aspect IT has so far left no stone unturned in their bid to ‘create
positive change, one good deed at a time’.

Most recently, Aspect IT completed their 10th good deed.

This was a proud moment for the business, not just because it marked the halfway point but also because of the extra special nature of this particular deed.

Aspect IT Peter visits Ukraine with HTUHA for Good Deed 10 Back in December, Peter joined voluntary group, Huddersfield to Ukraine Humanitarian Aid, on one of their trips to Ukraine. On this trip, he helped the group deliver Christmas presents to children who had been left orphaned due to the ongoing war.

The firm has supported the group in the past for previous good deeds but Peter, who is of Ukrainian descent, had also worked with the group’s founder long before that given that the cause is something which is extremely close to his heart.

He said: “When I was asked if I’d like to join Huddersfield to Ukraine Humanitarian Aid on their Christmas trip for Aspect’s 10th deed, I practically jumped at the opportunity. Just a few weeks later I had booked and paid for my travel and was on my way! It was an absolute pleasure to join them. I witnessed first-hand the positive change the group’s efforts have on those who have been affected by the war and to say it was incredibly touching is an understatement.”

Whilst the spotlight shines on Peter and Huddersfield to Ukraine Humanitarian Aid, there was also some behind-the-scenes work going on at Aspect IT which couldn’t go unnoticed.

To help the group raise funds to facilitate the trip, Aspect IT set up a GoFundMe page.

The firm also arranged for packs containing a certificate of appreciation, in addition to a
drawing from one of the children in the orphanage, to be designed and posted out to
generous supporters as an extension of the group’s gratitude.

The firm’s marketing executive, Alysha Pritchard, said: “We’ve come across so many amazing charities, groups and individuals whilst carrying out these Good Deeds and our eyes have been opened to the inspiring work being carried out by people in our community.

“We can’t wait to see where the reminder of our journey takes us and who else we’ll meet
and support along the way.”

Founded in 2003, Aspect IT provide an array of services including general IT Support as well as IT Consultancy, Cloud Services, Software Development, VoIP Services, Web Design and Social Media Management.

Man given football banning order for tragedy chanting

0

A Liverpool man has pleaded guilty to tragedy chanting during the Manchester United v Everton fixture in March.

Mark Finnigan (24) of llchester Road, appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court.

He pleaded guilty to the tragedy chanting offence but opposed a football banning order.

Following a short hearing, the court sentenced Finnigan to a conditional discharge of six months and a three-year football banning order was made.

Inspector Gregg Anderton, of GMP’s Specialist Operational Planning Unit, said: “Finnigan was witnessed by an officer to turn towards the home crowd and make a hand gesture which he later accepted could be interpreted as being related to the Munich air disaster.

“Finnigan was removed from the ground and arrested on suspicion of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent to cause harassment, alarm, or distress under the Public Order Act.

“We are reiterating the message that any kind of gesture or comments from any supporters to other clubs in relation to tragedy chanting will not be tolerated and is completely unacceptable.

“I would also like this to be a strong warning for any supporters attending future fixtures in Greater Manchester that if you engage in this behaviour, GMP officers will do everything possible to bring you in front of the courts.”

OJ Simpson – who was acquitted of murder – dies of prostate cancer

OJ Simpson has died following a battle with cancer, his family has announced on social media.

The former NFL star-turned-actor was acquitted of murdering his wife Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman, two decades ago in a trial that took the globe by storm.

From the start, OJ Simpson declared himself “absolutely 100% not guilty”.

According to prosecutors, Simpson allegedly killed Brown out of jealousy, presenting blood, hair, and fibers as evidence to connect him to the crime. Simpson’s defense team countered by asserting that the athlete was being set up by racially biased white law enforcement officers.

The jury took fewer than four hours to deliver a verdict – and when it did, crowds outside erupted into cheers.

But Simpson was subsequently held responsible for their deaths in a civil lawsuit, and was mandated to compensate the victims’ families with £26.7 million in damages.

Death announced

His family posted the announcement of his death on Twitter/X, saying that he was surrounded by children and grandchildren when he passed on April 10.

Screenshot 2024 04 12 074724 While US media started reporting in February that OJ Simpson was being treated for prostate cancer, he never personally confirmed the diagnosis. The reports only ever cited “sources”.

Dr Jiri Kubes, radiation oncologist and medical director of the Proton Therapy Center in Prague, Czech Republic, said:
“Prostate cancer in the early stages can be hard to diagnose because it often comes without symptoms.
“However, men should keep a close eye on any changes in urinary habits including needing to go to the toilet more often and difficulty emptying their bladder.
“These changes don’t necessarily mean someone has prostate cancer, but there are checks that can be carried out to rule out such a diagnosis.”

What other symptoms should you look out for?

“Further symptoms we often see in our patients are difficulty in starting to urinate or a weak flow, as well as blood or semen in the urine.”

When should you see your GP?

“It is vital men know what to look out for and speak to their doctor if they have any concerns at all.
“GPs can ask for a blood test which measures levels of prostate specific antigen, referred to as a PSA test. Physical exams and biopsies can also help to confirm a diagnosis.
“We don’t know the causes of prostate cancer but we do know some men are more at risk than others.
“They include men over the age of 50, members of the black community and anyone with a family history of the disease.
“It’s really important for anyone who falls into these groups to keep a close eye on their health and speak with their GP if they are concerned.
“Diagnosis of prostate cancer can be a devastating blow for men, but catching it as early as possible is key and the treatment options are improving.”

The Masters 2024: Scheffler one shot behind DeChambeau, ‘solid start’ for McIlroy

Scottie Scheffler drew within one shot of clubhouse leader Bryson DeChambeau by the end of a rain-shortened first day at The Masters, while Rory McIlroy felt he made a “solid start” at one under.

After heavy rain and the threat of lightning delayed the start of play by around two and a half hours on Thursday morning, it was DeChambeau who seized the initiative among the early starters.

His seven-under 65 – a career-best at Augusta National – gave him a commanding clubhouse lead, with the 2020 U.S. Open champion aided by a run of five birdies in six holes down the back nine.

Danny Willett – winner of the 2016 edition – was the surprise name near the top of the leaderboard as he shot a four-under 68, playing his first round of golf since having shoulder surgery last September.

However, it was Scheffler who ended the day closest to DeChambeau, the world number one and tournament favourite showing ominous form with a bogey-free 66.

Speaking about the blustery conditions in Georgia, Scheffler said: “I was just going to try and stay patient and take advantage of some holes where I could.

“It’s so challenging when the winds get this high because it blows in so many different directions.”

Despite the conditions worsening as light ran out on 27 players, Nicolai Hojgaard reached five under after 15 holes, while Max Homa was one shot further back with five holes to finish on Friday morning.

It was a mixed start for McIlroy, meanwhile, with the Northern Irishman recovering from a two bogey in his first three holes to finish one under.

Birdies on the 12th and the 14th helped McIlroy finish under par after round one at The Masters for the first time since 2018. After playing himself out of this tournament early on several occasions, he was pleased to give himself a chance.

“It’s satisfying in one sense because it is a decent start compared to how I’ve played in previous years, but I felt I could have been two or three better today,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s a good start, it’s a solid start. I’m not out of the tournament and I don’t think I’m chasing anything tomorrow.

“I’m playing with Scottie, who is obviously one of the leaders, so I’ll keep an eye on him and see what he’s doing.”

McIlroy has spoken about the need to adopt a more patient approach at this year’s tournament, and that was on his mind on Thursday.

“I felt like I did a good job of it” he continued. “I stuck to my gameplan and didn’t start to chase it. With the way the conditions were today, you had to stay patient and be as disciplined as possible.

“I think anything under par today was a decent score. I will rue the last four holes, I could have got a little more out of it, but I’m pretty happy.”

Tiger Woods was level with McIlroy with five holes remaining when play was suspended at 19:51 local time, but it was a poor start for 2023 champion Jon Rahm, whose bid to defend his crown was dented by a one-over 73.

The first round will resume at 07:50 local time on Friday (12:50 BST) with the last group having eight holes to finish, with the second round getting under way shortly afterwards.

ASS Programme by INTO: A Beacon for US Visa Aspirants

0

Addressing the high demand for US educational opportunities among international students, INTO University Partnerships has rolled out its Pre-Arrival Success Services (PASS) programme, specifically designed to ease the US visa application ordeal, especially in locales where obtaining a visa is notoriously difficult.

Crafted by INTO University Partnerships, the PASS programme aims to deliver exhaustive visa guidance and support to international students desiring to pursue education in the US. This complimentary initiative has successfully assisted over 2000 students from a slew of countries, including India, Vietnam, Pakistan, Turkey, Kenya, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Kazakhstan, in securing their F-1 visas.

The PASS programme stands out for its in-depth approach, which includes simulated interview scenarios facilitated by expert advisors, going a step beyond the usual visa guidance offerings. It encompasses personalised mock interviews, dynamic workshops, and detailed webinars, covering the visa application process from start to finish.

Underscoring the customised nature of the support, Jacquie Serr, INTO University Partnerships’ Vice President of Enrolment, remarked: “When it comes to a students’ enrolment journey, it is vital that we meet them where they are, offering support and services in areas of high stress. The US visa process and how decisions are made on an F-1 visa can be confusing for students and their families to navigate. What makes PASS different is that we take the time to work individually with students – each student, their goals and background are unique, and so is each 1:1 session our advisors have with students. Human interaction is important here, not just for visa success but for student success.”

Highlighting the programme’s fundamental objective, Laura Nye, PASS Programme Manager, stated: “The US international student visa application and interview is a complicated and challenging process for many students. Our primary goal with the PASS program is to build students’ confidence throughout the visa process as they prepare to embark on their academic journey in the US.”

Initiated in 2020 to specifically aid students from low visa success rate regions, the PASS programme has rapidly evolved into a critical support system, significantly boosting the chances of visa approval for its participants.

The programme’s webinars extensively explore various topics related to the F1 visa application, document scrutiny, and more, culminating in a Q&A session for students to voice their queries.

Expounding on the programme’s comprehensiveness, Laura Nye added: “Our program is designed to cover every aspect of the US visa process for students. We provide students with comprehensive information and the opportunity to address any concerns or questions they may have. We also facilitate connections with student experience teams at our partner universities and provide insights into campus resources. This ensures a smooth transition into university life, where students can leverage the available support.”

The PASS programme facilitates personalised mock interview sessions with INTO’s visa specialists, priming students for their visa interviews by fostering confidence and effective communication of their academic objectives.

The effectiveness of the programme is echoed in the testimonials of students like Emmanuel, Muhammed, and Pablo, who attribute their improved interview readiness and confidence to the PASS programme, leading to successful visa outcomes.

The programme’s impact is further recognised by INTO’s US partner universities, witnessing an upsurge in campus diversity with the inclusion of competent international students.

Officials from The University of Alabama and INTO Hofstra University, Vince Milam and Oscar Del Rio respectively, have commended the PASS programme for its crucial support in readying students for visa interviews, highlighting its invaluable service.

Since its inception in 2005, INTO University Partnerships has been pivotal in connecting over 150,000 students from 180 countries with premier universities in the US, UK, and Australia, facilitating their journey towards achieving their academic dreams.

The Masters 2024: DeChambeau surges into lead, Willett shoots four-under

Bryson DeChambeau made a flying start on the opening day of the 88th Masters on Thursday, surging into an early lead after inclement weather delayed the start of play.

Fans were made to wait for the first major of 2024 to get under way as heavy rain and the threat of lightning saw play delayed by around two and a half hours.

When the action finally began at Augusta National, it was former U.S. Open champion DeChambeau who set the pace with a career-best seven-under 65 at the iconic Georgia course.

DeChambeau – who has never finished higher than 21st at The Masters and has missed the cut in each of the last two years – started with three straight birdies, but it was a run of five birdies in six holes down the back nine which saw him soar to the top of the leaderboard.

Speaking to Sky Sports Golf after completing his first round, DeChambeau said: “Man, it was a great test of golf, the wind is picking up and it was a brutal challenge out there.

“I was luckily enough to get a couple of good breaks on the back nine and I was putting it in good places. I was trying to place it in the correct place on this golf course.

“Strategy out here sometimes goes unnoticed and people think you can bomb it. No. You have to place it and I did that today.”

Of the other early starters, 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett was closest to DeChambeau with a four-under 68, while Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler were level with the Englishman with three and five holes remaining, respectively.

Willett, who was playing his first competitive round since undergoing shoulder surgery in September, said of his unexpectedly strong start: “I feel alright. I think I might take the next six months off!

“It’s completely unexpected. Sometimes that happens. You make a couple of birdies and your mind starts thinking, ‘alright, I can do it’.

“It was nice to keep chilled out, because it was playing tough, it probably really made us concentrate that little bit more.”

Rory McIlroy – who is looking to complete the career Grand Slam and end a 10-year major drought – stood at one-under through 13 holes, having got under way alongside Scheffler and Xander Schauffele.

Tiger Woods was among the late starters, but he didn’t need long to provide the Augusta crowd with a highlight as he got out of trouble at the second with a remarkable left-handed chip with the club head pointing towards him.

Formula One: Fernando Alonso extends Aston Martin deal through 2026

Fernando Alonso has put an end to speculation over his Formula One future by signing a new contract with Aston Martin, committing to the team until the end of the 2026 season.

Alonso, who joined Aston Martin ahead of the 2023 season after one year with Alpine, was out of contract at the end of this campaign.

The two-time world champion had been linked with seats at Mercedes and Red Bull, with Lewis Hamilton preparing to join Ferrari and Sergio Perez yet to renew his deal with the current constructors’ champions.

Last month, the Spaniard hinted he could step away from the sport altogether, saying he needed to analyse his 2024 performances before committing his future to any team.

However, he has now penned a new deal to remain with Aston Martin for two more years after this one, meaning he will stay in F1 until at least the age of 45.

In a statement released to the team’s website, Alonso said: “There has been much said and written about my future in Formula One in the past few months, but today I’m delighted to announce that I’m here to stay with Aston Martin in a multi-year agreement.

“I said at the start of the year that I would decide if I wanted to continue racing first and then sit down with the team.

“From the moment I joined the team in 2023 I felt extremely at home. In just over 15 months we have already achieved so much together, with some memorable podiums and battles.

“I am very grateful for the trust [chairman] Lawrence [Stroll] and [team principal] Mike [Krack] have put in me, and with Lance [Stroll] I am excited to see what else we can achieve together.

“This is only the beginning for this project and I am proud to be part of it. I am at my physical best and still hungry. I will give my all as we continue our journey to becoming a championship-winning team.”

Alonso finished fourth in the drivers’ championship standings last season, posting six podium finishes in the first eight races before he tailed off as Aston Martin’s bright start fizzled out.

He is eighth in the standings after four races of 2024, with a fifth-place finish at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix his best result of the new campaign.

Team principal Krack is delighted that Alonso will stay with the team as they bridge the gap to 2026, when they will ditch Mercedes’ power units to take Honda engines.

“Fernando is hungry for success, driving better than ever, is fitter than ever, and is completely dedicated to making Aston Martin a competitive force,” Krack said.

“This multi-year agreement with Fernando takes us into 2026 when we begin our works power unit partnership with Honda. We look forward to creating more incredible memories and achieving further success together.”

Detective chief inspector Neil Higginson and Senior Investigating Officer said: “A week on, our investigation has now come to a position where we have charged three suspects in relation to this incident.

Coffee operator confirmed for Spring opening of Cafe at Eden

0

Eden – the £36 million, 12-storey office building in New Bailey, Salford – has selected  Spice & Grind to operate the ground floor café which will serve its occupiers and the public.

The sustainable office building was developed by ECF (formerly The English Cities Fund), a public-private partnership between three of the UK’s leading regeneration and investment organisations, Homes England, Legal & General and Muse.

An ideal place for occupiers to meet colleagues, peers, or collaborators in a more relaxed environment – or to simply have a break away from desks – the café area forms part of Eden’s new open-plan reception, which has been designed to match the feel created by the living wall responsible for its striking external appearance.

Planting features throughout the ground floor of Eden and the café’s furniture was chosen on the basis of sustainable credentials. FSC timber is also used throughout with the café area featuring a stunning countertop made from 85% recycled glass. The elements combine – comfortable seating and neutral colour palette – to create a place that brings a sense of calm and balance.

Opening to serve both Eden occupiers and the public, the café will act as a connecting point between those working in the building and the wider New Bailey community.

The founder and owner of Spice & Grind, Samantha Seddon (pictured) will be overseeing a menu of expertly made coffee along with an array of light bites including grazing boards (both breakfast and lunch), a variety of filled bagels, pastries, and sweet treats.

Phil Marsden, managing director North West for Muse, said: “The café at Eden is a key social amenity that helps enable the building to become more than ‘just an office’. By opening its own dedicated door to the public and inviting them into the café, the broader local community can connect with both Eden and its occupiers.

“We knew Spice & Grind was the perfect partner for this facility at Eden – Samantha shares our passion for really getting to know and connecting with people and places in ways which support both wellness and sustainability.”

Samantha Seddon, Spice & Grind, said: “I am so excited! My business started out in a horsebox which, when I bought it to renovate, still had hay in it! To be moving from that, in New Bailey where Eden is situated, into a building I have watched grow before my eyes onto Salford’s skyline, is more than I could ever have dreamt of.”
