Manchester United captain Fernandes urges players to ignore noise around Ten Hag

0

Bruno Fernandes says the Manchester United players need to focus on their own jobs and not get distracted by speculation surrounding the future of manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag’s position at Old Trafford has looked perilous even before the partial takeover by Jim Ratcliffe, who was at Wembley yesterday as United squandered a 3-0 lead against Championship side Coventry City, survived a narrow offside call that would have almost certainly meant an extra-time defeat before squeezing through on a penalty shoot-out.

Ratcliffe cannot fail to have been alarmed by the disorganised nature of United’s performance which came on the back of one win in seven league games.

It seems inevitable Ten Hag will be dismissed in the summer but captain Fernandes believes the players need to ignore the noise around the Dutchman.

He told The Guardian: “That doesn’t have to affect anyone because we have to focus on everything we have this season. We still have chances to get in the European positions in the league, we have to finish as high as possible, that’s the main thing, and then we have an FA Cup final to play.

“So no one has to be worried because it’s not our job to be worried with these things that come from the outside or from the inside or whatever because we have the owners who take care of that, we have the directors and then we players…it’s about performing on the pitch and giving our best.”

United will now meet Manchester City in the final for the second year in succession. City won last year 2-1 thanks to Ilkay Gundogan’s brace with Fernandes netting for United from the penalty spot.

“It’s two years in a row we have reached a final, we know how difficult it is to get to the final of the FA Cup. Obviously we wanted to get there in a different way,” added the Portugal midfielder.

“For the first 70 minutes, we were so good, we controlled the game and then obviously well done from them, they believed, they gave everything they could to get back to the game and they did it.

“At the end, they got some lucky goals but at the same time, we have to give credit to them.”

Police reopen scene at Kersal Wetlands amidst murder inquiry

0

Police investigating the discovery of human remains in Salford, have reopened a scene nearby.

On April 4, part of a torso, buttocks and thigh of a man in his forties were found wrapped in plastic in Kersal Wetlands.

Since then, hundreds of specialist officers and scientists have been working around the clock to search the area.

On Wednesday, police decided to close the scene but with the investigating parameters moving and the search widening, a scene at Great Clowes Street and Kersal Wetlands was re-opened on Saturday.

Police want to urgently speak with anyone who was in the area between 6am and 6pm on Thursday, April 4. From the vast CCTV trawls which have taken place since the investigation launched, police have reported that children were playing in the area in the days leading up to the victim being found, – and they could hold crucial information without realising it.

Further enquiries

Detective superintendent Lewis Hughes said: “I understand there has been large public interest in the case, so it is only right that we inform you of our most recent update.

“Whilst our extensive search of the area was completed last week, we have some further enquiries that we are looking to exhaust during the course of the day.

“I would like to reassure you that this is precautionary. Every piece of intelligence we receive is investigated thoroughly, leaving no stone unturned to give us the best chance of finding out who our victim is and what happened to him.

“If you have any information that you would like to share with us, or any concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to my officers at the scene.

“At this stage, we are expecting to be at the scene for several hours, but there should be no disruption to the wider community. I would like to thank residents once again for their patience and cooperation in assisting us in our investigation. We will keep people informed as soon as we have more updates to share.”

Nottingham Forest: Carragher and Neville expect big punishment after ‘embarassing’ statement

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville expect the FA to come down hard on Nottingham Forest after they released a statement criticising VAR and Stuart Attwell following their 2-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had three huge penalty shouts waved away by referee Anthony Taylor at Goodison Park, prompting a furious statement from the Tricky Trees at full-time.

The Midlands club recently employed former official Mark Clattenburg as a consultant to provide clarity and communication with those operating the new technology but he labelled the decisions not to award Forest a penalty as “a joke” and suggested that the club were left feeling “victimised.”

After recording their 18th loss of the season against Everton, Forest remain just one point above the relegation zone and four behind Sean Dyche’s men in 16th place.

Man City title triumph ‘feels inevitable’ after Liverpool, Arsenal slip-ups – Gary Neville

But Sky Sports pundits Neville and Carragher had no sympathy for the two-time European Cup winners, with the former suggesting Clattenburg should resign from his role.

“Mark Clattenberg must resign tonight,” said Neville on Sunday.

“If he saw those words go out in which question the integrity of a referee and claims someone is a cheat for supporting another club, then he’s supporting what is being said.

“He would lose all credibility with referees in the game. He should stand down tonight and distance himself from that statement.

“The statement is like a petulant child. It’s embarrassing.

“Today has been a horrendous day for Nottingham Forest. Possibly horrendous because of the decisions that they’ve had, but horrendous for how they’ve reacted to the situation.

“To mention the VAR official as being a Luton fan and inferring in some way that’s had an impact on the decision-making process and suggesting to me as a fan, thinking ‘has he cheated us’, you’re into really dangerous territory.”

Former Liverpool man Carragher agreed with his old rival and believes the FA should come down hard on Forest to prevent a similar situation happening again.

He said: “The FA need to come down hard on Forest and stamp this out. There’s been stuff with Liverpool at Tottenham and Arsenal at Newcastle.

“It feels like it’s building with Clattenburg at Forest. It’s like a tactic to put pressure on officials in some way. We saw Clattenburg in the stands.

“This shouldn’t get away from Anthony Taylor and Stuart Attwell having a bad day but this behaviour needs stamping out, like asking for an apology, exploring all options.

“There are no options. There needs to be a really big sanction on Forest.”

Chinese Grand Prix 2024 results: Verstappen ‘felt amazing’ in F1 win, looks ahead to ‘crazy’ Miami GP

Runaway driver standings leader Max Verstappen said his Red Bull “felt amazing” after winning the Chinese Grand Prix for his fourth win in the first five races of the 2024 Formula One season.

Reigning champion Verstappen finished almost 14 seconds ahead of second-placed Lando Norris and more than 19 seconds clear of team-mate Sergio Perez in a race featuring two safety car interventions in quick succession.

“We were incredibly quick all weekend,” said Verstappen, who started on pole in Shanghai, adding that he had “survived” the restarts.

“It was just enjoyable to drive. I could do whatever I wanted with the car. To achieve what we did is fantastic.”

Chinese Grand Prix: Verstappen on pole as Hamilton slumps to 18th with Q1 exit

The first halt in the action took place when Kick Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas suffered an engine failure at Turn 11 on lap 20, leading to Norris and team-mate Charles Leclecr, who finished fourth, overtaking Perez.

Red Bull had hoped Perez would catch both drivers and complete a one-two for them after a further delay caused by two incidents on lap 27.

The only moment of concern for Verstappen, who is 25 points above Perez in the standings, appeared to be hitting material on the track as he cruised to victory.

“You hear noises a little bit,” he said. “I’ve had it in the past where I’ve retired quite close to the end. There was a bit of debris from a car.

“When the tyres are getting cold and old, it’s very easy to puncture them. I wanted to double check.”

Red Bull are 44 points above Ferrari, for whom Carlos Sainz came fifth ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who won the race for a record sixth time when it was last held in 2019, came ninth for Mercedes, with Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg completing the top 10.

Verstappen will now attempt to win the Miami Grand Prix for a third consecutive edition when the championship heads to Florida in two weeks’ time.

“It’s normally a good race for us,” he said. “It’s normally a little bit more straightforward in terms of strategy but it’s a difficult track. I’m excited – it’s always a crazy weekend there.”

Chinese Grand Prix 2024: Verstappen on pole as Hamilton slumps to 18th with Q1 exit

Max Verstappen will start Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix in pole position after leading Sergio Perez in a Red-Bull one-two in qualifying, while Lewis Hamilton must fight from 18th on the grid after crashing out in Q1.

Verstappen finished 0.322 seconds ahead of Perez as Red Bull clinched their 100th pole position, just hours after the Dutchman beat Hamilton to win the sprint race earlier on Saturday.

Perez was just 0.166 seconds clear of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, who will start in third, followed by McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Speaking after the final qualifying session, Verstappen told Sky Sports: “After the sprint, it gave us a few more ideas for the car and I think the car worked even better in qualifying.

“We’re definitely very happy with how the whole of qualifying went. The car was really nice to drive and also in Q3, that final lap felt pretty decent.

“I’m also very happy to drive here in the dry. The conditions were pretty good, so it was a lot of fun.”

Hamilton hailed his second-placed finish in the sprint race as his best showing “in a long time”, but he was swiftly brought back to earth as he dropped out in Q1.

The seven-time world champion told Sky Sports his Mercedes had undergone “massive” set-up changes after the sprint race, alterations he regretted.

“I’ll give it my best shot – 18th is pretty bad,” Hamilton said. “When I was making the set-up changes, I was like, ‘it can’t get any worse, surely’, and it did!”

It was also a difficult day for Hamilton’s future team Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finishing in sixth and seventh respectively.

Sainz crashed at the final corner in Q2, but he was able to get his damaged car back to the pits under a red flag for repairs which salvaged his session.

The Scuderia team-mates had clashed in the sprint race earlier on Saturday, when Sainz pushed Leclerc off the track in a failed attempt to defend fourth place.

Sainz apologised in the aftermath of the incident, saying: “I was doing everything I could to defend and I had a bit of a moment with Charles, so I apologise if I did something over the limit. I was doing everything to keep it under control.”

Chinese Grand Prix 2024: ‘Huge step’ for Hamilton but Verstappen takes sprint honours

Lewis Hamilton said he had taken a “huge step” despite missing out on top spot in Saturday’s sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen fighting past his old rival to take the honours.

Hamilton started the first sprint race of the season second on the grid, behind only Lando Norris, and he passed the McLaren driver on the first corner to take control.

However, after a testing start, the Red Bulls’ pace was there for all to see, Verstappen fighting his way from fourth to seize the lead before the halfway stage of the 19-lap race then cruising home.

Hamilton was able to split the Red Bulls, though, clinging on for second ahead of Sergio Perez, which he described as his most positive performance in a difficult season to date.

“That’s the best result I’ve had in a long time so I am super happy and grateful, this is a huge step and improvement,” he told Sky Sports.

“The race was tough and if I was further back I would have struggled to progress, I found a lot about this car through this short stint so I am excited about tomorrow.”

Verstappen stands as the clear favourite for Sunday’s race, though, after overcoming early complaints over his battery to win by 13.043 seconds.

“The first few laps were quite hectic. They were pushing quite hard up front and I had Carlos [Sainz] behind with new tyres and it was very difficult to keep him behind,” Verstappen said.

“Then as the race went on we became stronger and I felt more comfortable with the balance of the car and could look after my tyres. Very pleased with that.”

There was plenty of drama behind the top two, meanwhile, with Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin sustaining race-ending damage when he collided with Sainz on turn nine, with Perez taking advantage to pass both drivers.

Sainz was later involved in another incident involving Charles Leclerc, with the Spaniard bumping and pushing his Ferrari team-mate off the track at the final hairpin in a failed attempt to hold onto fourth.

Leclerc did overhaul Sainz before the Spaniard offered a post-race apology.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Sainz said: “I was doing everything I could to defend and I had a bit of a moment with Charles, so I apologise if I did something over the limit. I was doing everything to keep it under control.”

How One Young World Is Preparing Young Leaders in the Digital Era

0

In the heart of today’s globally connected and digitally driven planet, One Young World is an essential incubator for nurturing budding leaders tasked with the formidable challenge of steering civilization toward a more sustainable and equitable future. This organization isn’t merely a platform; it is a vibrant, global community where the leaders of tomorrow converge to spark change.

One of the ways One Young World stays plugged into inspiring today’s youth is through technology.

“Being youth-driven has always meant that One Young World has had digital DNA,” says Ella Robertson McKay, One Young World’s managing director. “In 2010 and 2011, in the early days of social media activism, some of the first-ever speakers were leading social media movements in Colombia and also in Egypt during the Arab Spring. Now social media and activism go hand in hand, but then it was groundbreaking. These days, we run really significant online campaigns with a variety of partners and a lot of our content is around how you can use digital innovation to solve the world’s biggest problems.”

One Young World identifies, promotes, and connects some of the world’s most impactful up-and-comers with a mission to forge a better world through more responsible and effective leadership.

Robertson McKay recalls a recent exchange with Ethan Waisberg, a winner at The Young Entrepreneurs Challenge; part of the winner’s package was a place at the One Young World Summit in Montreal.

“[Ethan’s] company is called AngioGenius and essentially, it’s using artificial intelligence to massively reduce the cost of health care for your eyes,” Robertson McKay says. Eye diagnostics typically involve two types of photographs that can be taken of the eye. These retinal photos can identify eye diseases and other abnormalities.

“From a simple photograph, the type you can take with your iPhone, the AI builds out the resolution to allow full diagnostics that you would only be able to do with very expensive eye photography, which many developing countries don’t have the facilities to do.”

Robertson McKay adds that One Young World is focusing on developing more trailblazers like this one.

“We are trying our best to identify young leaders like that, pair them with funding where possible, pair them with mentors, and also give them a platform to share this really exciting story about innovation in eye care so that they can be supported effectively,” Robertson McKay says.

The annual summit is the highlight of this movement, an event where the brightest blossoming talent from over 190 countries gathers to accelerate social impact. Vice describes the summit as “the world’s biggest and most impactful youth leadership summit,” a sentiment echoed by influential figures like the Duchess of Sussex, who took the stage at One Young World’s Manchester, England, summit in 2022 to discuss how these attendees are “the future,” and “the ones driving the positive and necessary change needed across the globe now in this very moment.”

Zurich, London, Pittsburgh, and Bogota, Colombia, are just a few other locations where the summit has been held.

Meghan was invited to be a counselor in 2014 before becoming the Duchess of Sussex in 2018. As a counselor, the fearless actress turned activist inspired delegates striving for positive change — who she said were much like herself.

The process of becoming a delegate at the One Young World Summit is highly competitive, accepting individuals who have demonstrated leadership ability and a tangible impact in their communities. Diversity is crucial to One Young World’s mission, and it brings together a rich tapestry of voices and experiences.

Over 50,000 applications are received annually. The selected delegates then become part of a global network of One Young World ambassadors dedicated to making a difference in their communities.

One Young World’s 2022 impact report states that over 1,845 delegates participated in the Manchester summit. There were 250 speakers, with 160 in-person and 90 contributing digitally.

One Young World Offers a Platform for Seasoned Activists

For enterprising One Young World ambassadors, there are opportunities of a lifetime to leverage. Deloitte, a multinational professional services network, stands out for its collaborative efforts with One Young World, particularly through programs like the Lead2030, the world’s biggest prize fund for young leaders making an impact for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This partnership is part of Deloitte’s WorldClass initiative to impact 50 million lives through education, skills development, and access to opportunity, which aligns perfectly with One Young World’s ethos. Deloitte’s Lead2030 Challenge specifically targets the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, seeking to prepare young people for the digital era through skills development, entrepreneurship, and improved access to education.

These initiatives underscore a crucial acknowledgment: As digital literacy and skills increasingly become the currency of success, conduits for creativity like One Young World are essential.

They offer young leaders a stage to voice their ideas and solutions and equip them with the tools, networks, and resources to implement these solutions effectively. Through programs like the Lead2030 Challenge, One Young World and its partners are directly contributing to preparing next-gen movers and shakers for the challenges and opportunities of the digital era.

Participants leave the summit inspired and armed with actionable insights and a robust network to catalyze global change. The community’s influence is tangible, with the One Young World 2022 Impact Report revealing that ambassadors have directly impacted over 5.7 million people, contributing to a collective impact on 41.5 million lives since 2010.

Another key facet of One Young World’s progressive digital push is inclusion and authenticity — something that could easily be lost in an era of filters and quick-fix apps.

“If you go on TikTok many, young people are talking about living with neurodiversity such as ADHD or autism, whereas even five years ago, that was probably quite taboo,” Robertson McKay says. “At One Young World, we celebrate young people embracing intersectional identities. Rather than just inclusive, we want to be really encouraging of everyone to bring them their true selves.”

Robertson McKay reiterates how the entity’s approach to shaping leaders is also a product of its potent partnerships.

“We are very good at helping young grassroots changemakers work with big business to make things happen,” she shares.
