Tiger Woods to play the US Open

Tiger Woods will play next month’s US Open after accepting a special exemption from the USGA.

The 48-year-old has won the event three times – in 2000, 2002 and 2008 – but had to rely on an invite after his five-year major championship exemption for winning the 2019 Masters expired.

The 2024 US Open takes place at Pinehurst, North Carolina and gets under way on June 13.

Woods said: “The U.S. Open, our national championship, is a truly special event for our game and one that has helped define my career.

“I’m honoured to receive this exemption and could not be more excited for the opportunity to compete in this year’s U.S. Open, especially at Pinehurst, a venue that means so much to the game.”

Fifteen-time major winner Woods has slipped to 789th in the world ranking after limiting his schedule following a serious car accident in February 2021.

He played the Masters last month, finishing 60th after making a tournament-record 24th consecutive cut.

Worcestershire spinner Baker dies, aged 20

Worcestershire are mourning the loss of spinner Josh Baker, who has died at the age of 20.

The left-armer played 47 games for the county across all formats after making his first-class debut in 2021. His last County Championship appearance came last month against Durham.

The club have not said how Baker died.

A Worcestershire statement read: “Worcestershire County Cricket Club is heartbroken to announce the untimely passing of Josh Baker, who was aged only 20 years old.

“Josh turned professional with the club in 2021 and quickly became a popular figure within the squad. More than his skills as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met.

“His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team.

“During this profoundly difficult time, the club is dedicated to supporting Josh’s family, friends, and colleagues. We are united in our grief and committed to honouring his memory in a manner befitting the remarkable person he was.

“Plans to pay tribute to Josh will be made in consultation with his family and will remain private at this time.”

Worcestershire CEO and former England spinner Ashley Giles added: “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated.

“Josh was much more than a team-mate; he was an integral part of our cricket family.

“We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh’s family and friends.”

“Morally reprehensible” police officer sacked after sexually assaulting girl

0

A police officer has been sacked after sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl, whilst he was on duty.

PC Dean Dempster (35), who was a response officer based at Oldham, was dismissed from the police service without notice today, following an accelerated misconduct hearing.

He previously pleaded guilty in February to sexually assaulting a child under 13.

Chief constable Stephen Watson said Dempster’s actions were “morally reprehensible” and added him to the College of Policing Barred List.

Police will now write to the deputy mayor of Greater Manchester to appeal for Dempster to lose his right to a police pension.

Presiding over today’s hearing, CC Watson found PC Dempster’s conduct amounted to gross misconduct, saying: “This sexual assault occurred whilst the officer was on duty and where the victim was totally trusting and reliant on him performing his duties professionally, compassionately and with her welfare uppermost in his thoughts.

“It is this most egregious breach of trust of an innocent young child that is most upsetting aspect of this case and something that clearly amounts to an aggravating factor.

“I consider this case to be among the most distressing ever presented to me such is the despicable betrayal of all that is inherent in being a decent police officer.

“I have no hesitation whatsoever in dismissing PC Dempster from the service with immediate effect.”

Convicted

Dempster sexually assaulted a young girl while responding to an incident in December 2023.

Police received a complaint later that day and he was arrested.

He was convicted at Liverpool Crown Court in February. He has remained suspended since being charged on December 31, 2023.

Detective chief superintendent Mike Allen said: “Dean Dempster is not a police officer, he’s a child sex offender who has no right to be in police uniform or in a position to serve the public.

“We have no time for people like Dempster who should not be in GMP and does not represent us.

“This is why we’re increasingly using accelerated misconduct hearings to root out and boot out officers who are unfit to serve in our uniform, and this work will continue while ever they remain.”

Dempster is due to be sentenced at a future date.

‘Greedy’ Rochdale drug dealer jailed for seven years

0
A Rochdale drug dealer has been jailed after being caught with £10,000 of class A drugs in his car.
Shabaz Ali, also known as “Greeneyes” (32) of Deeplish Road, was sentenced to seven years in prison.

He pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply class A drugs, dangerous driving, and driving whilst disqualified.

Back in November 2023, police spotted a suspicious white VW Golf GTI on Kingsway in Rochdale. The car failed to stop, and a pursuit was authorised.

Ali reached speeds exceeding 90mph in 30mph speed limit zones, continuing through local housing estates until he collided with a curb and fled.

Ali tried to run, but officers were on his tail and with assistance from the National Police Air Service, caught him hiding in the back garden of a nearby residential property, where he was promptly arrested (pictured).

A search of Ali’s car found a substantial amount of class A drugs—specifically crack cocaine and heroin. A total of 814 individual wraps were recovered, along with an additional package containing enough heroin for a further 130 individual wraps. The total haul is valued at around £10,000.

Detective sergeant Gabe Gibson, from Rochdale’s Challenger Organised Crime Team, said: “Ali’s reckless actions and outrageous display of driving endangered innocent members of the public.

“The recovery of £10k worth of class A drugs showed the true nature of his greedy mindset – making vast sums of money via the abhorrent trade of selling heroin and crack cocaine on the streets of Rochdale.

“Collaboration with GMP’s Force County Lines and Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit allowed for overwhelming evidence to be presented, ultimately leading to Ali pleading guilty.

“Whilst Ali contemplates his actions over the next several years from the confines of his cell, we remain committed to relentlessly pursuing those involved in drug supply and organised crime across Rochdale.”

Tenant screening best practices: Legal considerations for landlords

Effective tenant screening is critical for landlords in Manchester, aiming to secure
dependable tenants and safeguard their property investments.

This guide outlines crucial practices and legal considerations necessary for robust tenant screening.

Comprehensive tenant identity verification

Accurate tenant identification is a legal requirement that helps establish trust and protects
landlords from potential fines. Verifying a tenant involves scrutinising several essential
documents:
Photo identification: A driver’s licence or passport is essential to verify an individual’s
identity and full name.
Financial documents: Bank statements are necessary to assess a tenant’s income
stability, reflecting their ability to afford the rent.
Proof of residency: Utility bills should confirm the tenant’s address and be consistent
with other provided documents.

Further checks include reviewing additional legal documents such as birth certificates and
national insurance documentation, which provide deeper insights into a tenant’s background.

Legal and ethical screening practices

Manchester landlords must ensure their screening practices comply with UK discrimination
laws. Applying the same criteria to all applicants helps avoid discrimination based on
protected characteristics:
Consistent screening process: Employ a uniform process for all candidates, which
includes the same questions and checks, ensuring fairness and transparency.
Documentation: Keep detailed records of the screening process and decisions to
provide clarity and support in case of any disputes.

Strategic property advertising and initial tenant interactions

Crafting effective property advertisements and managing initial interactions are key to
attracting suitable tenants:
● Ad content: Clearly state the rental price and describe property features. To align with
tenant expectations, specify conditions like; no smoking or no pets.
● Initial meetings: Assess potential tenants during initial meetings by observing
punctuality, demeanour, and the nature of their inquiries, which can indicate their
interest and compatibility with the property.

The application process and comprehensive background

Checks

A detailed application form is crucial for gathering essential information from prospective
tenants. This should include employment history and previous landlord references:

Background checks: Conduct thorough credit checks and legal screenings to evaluate
financial responsibility and potential legal issues.

Reference checks: Contact previous landlords and employers to verify the tenant’s past rent payment behaviour and overall reliability.

Adopting comprehensive tenant screening practices allows Manchester landlords to better
protect their investments and foster positive relationships with tenants. By following these
guidelines, landlords can enhance their ability to manage their properties effectively and with confidence.

Landlords in Manchester looking to improve their tenant screening processes or seeking
guidance on housing regulations may find it beneficial to consult with professionals in
landlord help services.

Manchester United: Erik Ten Hag keen to make ‘new improvements’ this summer

Erik ten Hag says there is work to be done in the transfer market if Manchester United are to be competitive in the Premier League next season.

The Red Devils have fallen short of expectations this season, but could still salvage the campaign with an FA Cup final triumph over rivals Manchester City.

For now though, Ten Hag is looking ahead to the final four games in the top flight, starting with a trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

United spent over £150million on Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Mason Mount in the summer but will end the campaign lower down the table than they did in 2022-23.

And Ten Hag is expecting a busy few months off the pitch, if he remains at Carrington.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he said: “[There’s] always a lot of work, it’s normal when you go into a transfer window, but the injuries had a big impact.

“We know also we are still below the levels from the expectations Manchester United has so we have to catch up and I’m now going into my fifth window

“Two windows were quite OK, two we missed – so we have to make new improvements to the squad. But there is a base of this squad that is very good.”

Jadon Sancho is one of the names that has not lived up to expectations in Ten Hag’s tenure but the England international stood out for Borussia Dortmund during their 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old had a public falling out with the ex-Ajax boss and has been shoved out of the door – albeit on loan for now – however Ten Hag is refusing to close the door on a potential reunion.

He added: “So let’s say this: yesterday he played very good and he’s a very good player.

“Yesterday he showed why Manchester United bought him and he showed he represents a high value for Manchester United, which is good.

“I’m happy for Jadon, for the performance yesterday, and we’ll see what is going to happen in the future.”

United must win at Selhurst Park to keep their hopes of finishing in the top five alive in the final few weeks.

But they may travel to South London without captain Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial.

Ten Hag gave an injury update ahead of the game, saying: “Scott [McTominay] didn’t train so far this week but I expect him back in training on Saturday and we have to see if he’s 100% available or for a part of the game.

“After the game [against Burnley], we had an issue with Bruno [Fernandes].

“He is a doubt for Monday. We all know Bruno, never rule him out for any game. He will do his best to be available.

“Jonny Evans returned today for team training. Tomorrow we are off and then two days until the game. [Anthony] Martial was partly in team training.”

Ryan Garcia denies taking steriods after positive test results

Ryan Garcia has released a statement saying he has never taken steroids despite returning positive tests.

The WBC confirmed it has been notified by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association that the 25-year-old returned “adverse findings” from a sample taken in April.

Samples were reportedly taken the day of his win over Devin Haney but the results did not arrive until afterwards.

Garcia knocked Haney down three times in the shock victory, but was not handed the WBC light-welterweight title after missing weight.

On social media platform X, he said: “Everybody knows that I don’t cheat.

“Never taken a steroid, I don’t even know where to get steroids.

“I barely take supplements. Big lies, I beat him.”

Reports suggest Garcia tested positive for ostarine, which is used to support muscle growth and enhance performance.

It has been banned from boxing for the last 16 years and British boxer Amir Khan was previously banned for two years after testing positive for the substance.

Golden Boy Promotions – Garcia’s promoters – added: “Ryan has put out multiple statements denying knowingly using any banned substances – and we believe him.

Haney also commented and called for his rival to issue an apology to the fans.

He said: “We learned about this situation not too long ago and it’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty.

“Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet he still thinks this is a joke.

“We put our lives on the line to entertain people for a living.”

Data breach management: Five tips for an effective response

Data breaches can have a devastating impact on both organisations and data subjects, regardless of the circumstances. After a breach, organisations can face a multitude of issues, including operational disruption, reputation damage, loss of customer trust and regulatory consequences. Though businesses exist that offer data protection as a service, there are still a few core concepts of data breach management best practices that every business should be aware of. Developing a long-term data breach framework and security strategy is key for any organisation to remain proactive and help mitigate the consequences of a data breach. It’s important for organisations to have a well-rounded approach to data breach management, and the below is a list of five tips to ensure you build an effective response to both cyber and non-cyber incidents.

Cyber vs non-cyber breaches: What’s the difference?

Some of the biggest personal data breaches in recent history have involved cyber-attacks on organisations by malicious third parties. A prime example is Yahoo’s 2013 breach, which involved 3 billion user accounts and was reportedly initiated by a spear-phishing email. Despite the growing concern of cyber-assisted breaches, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) posits that non-cyber incidents still account for the highest number of reported breaches in total. A non-cyber breach could also be referred to as a physical or offline breach. As each name suggests, these happen through physical means, and usually involve some form of human error. Between October and December 2022, 75% of reported UK personal data breaches were classified as non-cyber, with “data emailed to the wrong recipient” cited as the leading cause, accounting for almost one in five incidents.

Data breach management best practices

No matter the organisation size or industry sector, proactive steps need to be taken to prevent a data breach. A robust plan should seek to offer more than mere protection from data breach penalties; it should allow organisations to respond swiftly and, ideally, provide the following advantages:
  • Build customer trust
  • Preserve brand reputation
  • Strengthen partnerships
  • Mitigate business disruption
  • Give stakeholders peace of mind
By having a robust plan and well-prepared staff, organisations can reduce the impact of potential attacks whilst demonstrating a firm commitment to safeguarding customer information. While larger organisations typically have dedicated teams and support for ongoing data security training, smaller businesses – especially self-employed individuals – can face unique challenges due to a lack of resources. Businesses in the UK can review the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) data protection guides for small organisations. For businesses in the EU, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) offers a similar guide.

5 tips for an effective data breach response

1. Establish a data breach response team

This can be a single person or a group, who will manage security incidents. Time is of the essence when responding to a breach, and a dedicated response team will play a vital role in minimising impact whilst safeguarding sensitive information. Ideally this person or team should have a firm understanding of data protection considerations, along with any immediate technical mitigation.

2. Review your data processing activities

Understanding how and where your organisation processes personal data (as well as the current security measures) helps identify potential weaknesses and highlights any risks. Regular reviews should be part of your overall plan, as they will enable you to make informed decisions on how best to allocate resources to strengthen your data protection efforts. Creating an Information Asset Register, conducting data mapping exercises and building a Record of Processing Activities (RoPA) can all help with this process. In addition, undertaking Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) on high risk processing activities ensures focus on processes where the impact of a data breach may be more significant.

3. Develop a data breach response plan

Though a risk assessment will identify areas of weakness, a robust data breach response plan ensures staff are prepared if a breach does occur. The specifics of a plan will vary, and can depend upon organisation size, industry sector and specific data handling practices. As a general rule of thumb, however, data breach response plans should include:
  • Details of the data breach response team
  • Breach identification and internal reporting and logging procedures
  • Legal and regulatory procedures
  • Breach containment and mitigation
  • External support resources
  • Breach risk assessment framework
  • Post-breach review procedures
  • Training and awareness requirements

4. Monitor for suspicious activity and anomalies

This should be a non-exhaustive and ongoing strategy for identifying potential breaches. Early intervention can reduce the damage caused by cyberattacks or personal data security incidents. Regularly updating and monitoring internal processes based on emerging threats and best practices is ideal. Here are some measures to consider:
  • Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)
  • Analyse web application logs for suspicious activities such as multiple login failures
  • Conduct regular data protection security audits
  • Conduct regular data protection refresher courses for all staff

5. Build a data protection culture

A company culture with in-built data protection awareness and knowledge is perhaps one of the primary factors in data breach prevention. As ICO figures show, the highest number of breaches are non-cyber, and of those, sending an email to the wrong recipient is the most probable cause of a data breach. Ongoing staff awareness and training is a core foundation for a strong data protection company culture.

Summary

Data breaches are an unfortunate reality that we must take into consideration, but by having a robust data breach management plan, organisations of all sizes can reduce the impact of potential attacks and demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding information. By following these five tips and implementing a step-by-step plan, personal information can be safer, data security can be stronger and the trust and confidence of stakeholders and customers can be ensured. Proactive measures and timely responses are the key for effective data breach management, so don’t sleep on this.
