Chris Jordan took a hat-trick as England cruised into the T20 World Cup semi-finals with a 10-wicket thrashing of the United States in Barbados.

Jordan finished with four for 10 from 2.5 overs and in the process became the first man to take a hat-trick for England in a T20 international.

His last five balls resulted in four wickets as the US collapsed from 115 for five to 115 all out.

It left England requiring 116 from 18.4 overs to ensure their net run-rate surpassed that of South Africa and guaranteed a last-four spot.

They got there much quicker, requiring 9.4 overs with captain Jos Buttler blasting a brilliant 83 not out from just 38 balls to guide his side home.

Fellow opener Phil Salt contributed a steady 25 from 21 balls as the States failed to make a breakthrough and exited the tournament.

Buttler admitted afterwards that getting to their target as quickly as possible was the aim in the hope it’ll be good enough to finish top of Super Eight Group Two and potentially avoid India in the semis.

He said: “Yeah, it was, absolutely.

“You’ve got to earn the right to start with, to try and get in, and then once we got through a few overs, we were really trying to target the [short] side with the wind. 

“We paid the USA a lot of respect but, when we came here, we talked a lot about our intensity. If we could bring that on the field, we thought we’d be too good.”

Buttler reserved special praise for history-maker Jordan, adding: “We wanted to bring CJ back in to add a little bit of depth to the batting line-up as well, with his all-round capabilities, and we know what he’s capable of with the ball. 

“He executed fantastically well, and a World Cup hat-trick is a great effort.”

Greater Manchester welcomes new ophthalmology and gastroenterology hospital

Based in Trafford Park, the conveniently located facility will help reduce NHS waiting times and increase patient choice by providing access to ophthalmology and gastroenterology services in the community.

The new hospital will offer ample free parking and excellent transport links. CHEC is currently fitting out the building into a state-of-the-art clinical facility complete with one ophthalmology theatre and one endoscopy suite.

Working in partnership with the NHS, CHEC has more than 25 community hospitals nationwide. The addition of CHEC in Trafford Park strengthens its existing North West stronghold which already includes Stockport, Preston, and Warrington.

City to be transformed into ‘biggest playground ever’ for Manchester Day 2024

The city centre is set to be transformed – on Saturday, July – into Manchester’s biggest ever playground for Manchester Day.

Inspired by an international summer of sport the city’s streets and squares will be filled with music, dancing and have-a-go activities designed to bring out the inner athlete in visitors young and old, as well as astounding acrobatics, and pop-up performances in the most unlikely of places.

Manchester City Council is working with outdoor arts specialists Walk the Plank on a medal-winning programme for the day that promises something for all ages and all sporting abilities – from the fastest kid off the block to the slowest – with events including what is set to be possibly the world’s slowest race as a pair of giant snails spend the best part of the day jockeying for first place in a race that definitely won’t be over in the blink of an eye.

With a Hip-Hop wrestling ring for breakdancing, wrestling, a spot of opera and a dash of drag, along with a vintage fairground to try the always competitive hook-a-duck challenge or a round of darts, and an actual reality arcade filled with larger-than-life console games to get fully immersed in, there’s sure to be something for even the most reluctant of athletes to enjoy.

Award-winning dance company Motionhouse will entertain with their hit outdoor show Wild, that will see performers fly through the city on a forest of poles in a daring dance-circus production using careful choreography and acrobatic movement, whilst performers from No Fit State Circus will be defying the laws of gravity as they bend, flex and build a towering series of bamboo structures as part of a mind-blowing performance that relies solely on human strength, trust, and harmony with nature.

Women’s work: Challenging perceptions of women in engineering

“You don’t look like an engineer”, catcalling on worksites or being mistaken for administration staff are just a few of the statements faced by female engineers.

With issues still prevalent around everyday sexism, and the proportion of women working in engineering decreasing in the past year, it’s clear that the industry still has a way to go.

Ahead of International Women in Engineering Day (on Sunday), new workforce data released by Engineering UK, shows the proportion of women working in engineering and technology roles has declined in the past year from 16.5% to 15.7%. In contrast, women make up more than half of the rest of the UK workforce (56.1%).

Rachel Fitzpatrick (pictured) almost left the industry two years ago due to the misogynistic culture she was facing on a daily basis, but found a new start and better fit in her role at Harley Haddow.

She acknowledges that there has been change since the beginning of her career, but feels the industry still has a long way to go before it is a welcoming and comfortable environment for female engineers.

She said: “I feel there is a stigma around women in engineering. That we should look or talk a certain way which is simply a load of rubbish. I have been told countless times that I ‘don’t look like an engineer. During a lecture at University, I was told by a mature student that women don’t have a work ethic and are not willing to work overtime – a fact I wish someone had told me!’.

“I understand that the industry is really trying to push for equality, but this can also unfortunately result in some small-minded people claiming that jobs are going to people just to fit this new ‘inclusivity and diversity’ mantra.

“For a woman to make it through the education system and into a role in engineering, the reality is she has already had to fight an uphill battle along the way, and the fact that we are still there and wanting to work in the industry is testament to our drive and resolve. This in itself is a huge skill and asset, and it is this that is forgotten by those that say women are being gifted jobs without earning it. Yes, we are women in engineering but at the end of the day we are all engineers and should be treated the same as any male engineer.”

Hayley McArthur has been with Harley Haddow for over a year and found her route into engineering thanks to a Physics teacher at school encouraging her to attend a women’s engineering day.

The 23 year old, who works in the consultancy’s Glasgow office, said: “What I couldn’t understand was why it was woman only, so I asked the question to be told that there weren’t enough woman engineers. I knew from that moment on that I wanted to change that.

“Working in the industry, you do encounter old fashioned people or the stereotypes who can’t quite grasp that woman can be engineers. It’s not always ignorance, sometimes people are just taken aback and don’t expect it. I’ve often been mistaken for the “admin”, and there is often the misconception that women are limited compared to things a male could do.”

Stockport County submits plans for expansion of Edgeley Park

EFL League Two champions, Stockport County Football Club, have submitted plans for the phased expansion of Edgeley Park, which would boost capacity from 10,852 to 18,305.

The application prepared by Asteer, follows two rounds of public consultation where the club sought feedback and received overwhelming support for its vision for the ground from the local community and fans.

The hybrid application (part full/part outline) is based on a phased approach to investing in improvements to Edgeley Park, to ensure sustainable growth in-line with success on the pitch and to meet league requirements as the club targets its return to Championship football.

The initial phase would include the eastern expansion and enhancement of the North Stand (Danny Bergara Stand) and East Stand (Railway End). The expanded North Stand would provide around 600 additional seats, increasing the capacity of this stand to around 3,312, while the new East Stand would see its capacity increase from 1366 up to around 4449.

Subject to securing planning permission, the club is looking to begin work on the North Stand eastern extension in early 2025 but this would not affect fans currently seated in the North stand.

As part of the club’s long-term plans, the South Stand would be redeveloped to increase its capacity to around 5,500, as well as delivering new food and beverage and hospitality facilities. The final element would be a western extension to the North Stand, providing another 600 seats. The plans also include formalising the long-term use of Bergara Close for coach parking which is currently implemented on a temporary basis.

If the proposed plans are successful, the halo effect of redeveloping Edgeley Park could be huge for both Edgeley and Stockport. Predicted to boost stadium attendance by circa 150,000 per year, the benefits for neighbouring businesses are predicted to bring a gross value add of circa £2 million per year, supporting new jobs and further economic growth for the borough.

Once complete, the redevelopment of Edgeley Park will create up to 25 new core operational roles, with an additional 160 casual staff expected to be needed for matchdays and other stadium events.

Ken Knott, non-executive chairman at Stockport County, said: “This is a very exciting time for the club as we continue to go from strength-to-strength, both on and off the field, ending the year as EFL League Two Champions and achieving promotion into EFL League one.

“We have outlined our ambition to reach the Championship and have already taken great strides towards reaching this goal, but ultimately, we believe that the expansion and enhancement of Edgeley Park is crucial to support the continued growth of the club and providing a platform for future success.

“As such, we are delighted to submit plans for the expansion and enhancement of Edgeley Park, helping to create a true community stadium. The ground means a great deal to the fans and the local community, and we want to ensure that the stadium matches our level of ambition so it can continue to provide a first-rate home for the club and the local community for many years to come.”
