Luke Littler victorious in first match since dream World Championship run

Luke Littler was victorious in his first match since his unforgettable run to the PDC World Championship final on Thursday, overcoming Man Lok Leung on his World Series of Darts debut.

Littler was credited with reigniting mainstream interest in darts with his thrilling run to the World Championship showpiece match at Alexandra Palace earlier this month, though he fell at the final hurdle in a 7-4 defeat to Luke Humphries.

Littler, who turns 17 on Sunday, was the youngest finalist in the tournament’s history and landed a £200,000 prize for his run to the final, which also saw him handed a place in the prestigious eight-player Premier League for 2024.

Littler will face fellow Englishman Nathan Aspinall in the last eight after wrapping up his victory with a 120 checkout.

Humphries was also in action at the tournament, thrashing Abdulla Saeed 6-0 to tee up a quarter-final against 2021 world champion Gerwyn Price, who beat Reynaldo Rivera 6-4.

Eight Asian players were pitted against eight of the PDC circuit’s best in Thursday’s first round, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final due to take place on Friday.

Plans revealed to deliver sustainable community of affordable homes in Wigan

Wigan is set to benefit from a £22 million affordable homes deal thanks to homebuilder Northstone and housing provider Torus.

Plans for the 113-home development off Stothert Street in Atherton – to be known as ‘Popple’ – were approved by Wigan Council last month.

The new affordable homes will be available to rent, with funding in part from Homes England.

The first energy-efficient homes will be ready by Autumn 2024. They’ll include 33 homes for affordable rent, 12 available for social rent, and 68 Rent To Buy properties, ranging from one to four bedrooms.

The site acquired from Peel, will boast excellent sustainability credentials, with the all-electric community set to feature enhanced fabric to minimise heat loss, air source heat pumps and electric vehicle chargers.

Local benchmark for quality

Jo Allen, land & partnerships director at Northstone, said: “There’s no let-up in the housing crisis, with authorities like Wigan needing to diversify their housing mix to meet local demand. It’s fantastic to be partnering with Torus to deliver a 100% affordable home development that will set a new local benchmark for quality, sustainable rental communities surrounded by green space.

“Not everyone is in a position to buy and many want the flexibility of renting. Popple will mean those looking for affordable rental homes will have access to the same, high-quality new build homes often only open to those who are buying.”

Managing director of Torus Developments, Chris Bowen, said: “As a housing group, we’re well aware of the current cost-of-living-crisis and how heavily it is impacting our communities and the cost of housing, so our mission to continue building great, affordable homes continues to be as pertinent as ever.

“It’s fantastic to once again work with Northstone and continue building on the successful partnership that has already seen us deliver 210 homes in Wigan and Ellesmere Port. We value true collaboration and Popple is the latest in a long line of schemes we have brought forward thanks to key partners such as Wigan Council and Homes England, so I look forward to seeing it become a truly sustainable, affordable community at the heart of Atherton.”

Designed to embrace natural features and provide a central green corridor, the new neighbourhood will also link footpaths through the development into existing routes. Around 10,000 sqm of greenspace will be opened for the local community to enjoy, featuring new hedge and tree planting; as well as species-rich grassland.

Grant funding

Delivery of Popple is being supported by £6.6 million of grant funding from Homes England Strategic Partnership 2021-26 programme. It’s the second community that Northstone and Torus have teamed up on in the borough in the last 12 months, with affordable homes brought forward at Tulach (the former Pemberton Colliery site) in Wigan.

Wigan Council approved a planning application for the Popple site in November 2023 and has been working with project partners to help meet its local targets for delivery of affordable homes.

Councillor Susan Gambles said: “This is a really exceptional development, of good quality affordable homes that have been thoughtfully designed, making sure the energy source is both sustainable and will keep the bills low.”

Kate Collins, senior manager from Homes England, said: “As the government’s housing and regeneration agency, increasing the supply of quality affordable homes remains one of our key objectives and we are committed to supporting ambitious housebuilders of all sizes to build those homes and communities.”

Raducanu positive despite Australian Open exit

Emma Raducanu bowed out of the Australian Open today but insisted she feels “more confident than ever” after a positive return from injury.

Raducanu trusts in body again, says winning Australian Open return ‘just the beginning’

It was Raducanu’s fourth match back from wrist and ankle surgeries and she believes she has proved she is edging back towards her best level.

She said: “I’m very positive, very happy with how my body is.

“I feel good. Ankle feels good. I’ve completely got no fear with it. I feel more confident than ever. Just playing with no pain is something that for a while I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to do.

“I think there were doubts whether I would be able to make the Australian Open. I think that to be here is a bonus, a good starting point. I’m very grateful for that. I think that tidying up a bit of technique and things, also just getting used to playing matches outdoors, as well, because the conditions today were very windy.”

Raducanu’s inability to claim one of seven break-point chances in the final set ended up proving crucial but she hopes her month Down Under will be the catalyst for a more positive 2024.

She added: “I am feeling good about my tennis. I need to spend more time on tour, spend more time training, and putting good weeks together. I am really looking forward to the next few months.”

Police appeal for information about murdered dad

0

Chris passed away on May 30, 2023, after he was admitted to hospital a few days before.

His death was a result of medical complications that are believed to be directly linked to an assault against him 15 years ago in Bury, from which he never fully recovered.

The assault took place in the early hours of Saturday, October 4, 2008, when Chris left the Derby Arms pub on Bolton Street.

Whilst walking along Bolton Road he got talking to two women, near the Blockbuster Video store and Raja’s Indian Takeaway.

The two women then got into a black car with two men and as Chris continued to speak to the women, he was stabbed in the neck by one of the men.

Chris sustained life-threatening injuries from this attack but managed to make his way back to the Derby Arms Pub to seek help from the occupants, who gave him first aid and called an ambulance. He was then given life-saving treatment at hospital.

Following this incident, an investigation was launched by GMP Bury CID and two men were subsequently arrested however no one was charged with the assault.

In May 2023 a murder investigation was launched and police are now appealing to the public for information.

A mother’s appeal

Chris’ mother, Tracey McLeod said: “My son lost his life on May 30, 2023 at Fairfield Hospital when he was just 40 years old. Chris was kind-hearted and always put others before himself. He had a heart of gold, he was funny, loving, and most of all caring, and he had a fantastic personality.

“Chris touched the heart strings of everyone who met him: family, friends, colleagues, and strangers. Chris had a son he loved so very much but now his son has lost his father. Chris was a son, grandson, nephew, brother, uncle, father and brother-in-law. His greatest achievement was becoming an RAC inspector, which he was very proud of and his family was incredibly proud of him.

“Words cannot describe the pain and trauma that Chris’s death has had on our family. The pain and sadness is with us all day and night and it doesn’t go away. I am pleading as a mother for help from the public. Please help us as a family get some closure from the grief we are going through.

“Chris was brutally stabbed in the neck 15 years ago, and the people involved left my son for dead. This happened at the back of Blockbusters on Bolton Road. Please come forward with any information to help a devasted family and help my son Chris to rest in peace.”

Unprovoked attack

DI Alex Wilkinson of Greater Manchester Police said: “Chris was an innocent victim of an unprovoked and terrible attack that tragically resulted in his death. Although Chris passed away years after the incident took place, this has not lessened the impact on his family who have had to watch the person they love pass away from an act of senseless violence. Chris’s family remain at the forefront of this investigation, and we will continue supporting them with specialist officers.

“Despite the passage of time between Chris’s death and the attack on him, the investigation team remains determined to identify the person or persons responsible and bring them to justice.

“I would like to appeal to anyone with any information about the assault to do the right thing and contact police. The information you have could be the piece we need to solve this investigation and finally bring some closure to a grieving family.”

Allison commits to Mercedes

James Allison has signed a new long-term contract to remain as Mercedes’ technical director.

Allison – who joined Toto Wolff in committing his future to the Silver Arrows – has the job of helping the team recapture their position as the sport’s dominant force after slipping behind Red Bull.

Raducanu trusts in body again, says winning Australian Open return ‘just the beginning’

Mercedes have won just one race across the last two seasons, a record in stark contrast to the glory years that preceded 2022 when they won eight consecutive constructors’ championships.

Wolff said: “Put simply, he is the most impressive technical leader in our sport.

“His gladiator spirit, along with his knowledge, experience, and determination, make him second to none.

“Since joining in 2017, he has been a key ally and sparring partner for me personally. We can challenge each other openly and honestly; an embodiment of the ‘tough love’ culture of the team that is vital in helping us all perform at our very best. Most importantly though, James is a true friend you can rely on, not only in times of success but in difficult moments too.”

Allison accepts overcoming Red Bull is a huge challenge but is adamant it can be done.

He told BBC Sport: “I think Toto drew the comparison between climbing Mount Everest and the challenge we have in front of us and I think that’s a fairly apt comparison.

“Everest is the sternest of challenges but it is nevertheless something that is possible to do.

“And I think that’s how we’re taking this as something which is where we are, absolutely a challenger rather than a favourite. But nevertheless, we hope we’ve done a good job with the new car, we hope we’ve addressed some of the shortcomings that were so publicly on display with it last year.”

Manchester Hoteliers Association schools project to roll out across the UK

A project which connects Manchester’s hotel network with the hospitality stars of the future is being rolled out across the UK following its initial success.

The Hospitality Connect initiative (formerly the School and Hotel Liasion Programme) aims to foster interest in the industry and enhance awareness of careers by providing a series of in-person insights with a partnered hotel.

It was founded by Adrian Ellis, chair of the Manchester Hoteliers Association and general manager of the Lowry Hotel, in partnership with the Careers Hub team at Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

The project has grown to partner 32 schools with hotels across Greater Manchester, giving pupils access to employer encounters at various careers events, chef masterclasses, practical demonstrations, workplace visits and insights into behind the scenes occupations, as well as myth-busting industry misconceptions.

The programme also offers links with Springboard for informative resources and initiatives.

Manchester blueprint

Thanks to funding from the Savoy Educational Trust, Hospitality Connect is now being expanded across 10 cities, replicating the blueprint established in Manchester.

Adrian said: “We’re thrilled to expand Hospitality Connect as it enters its third year and are very proud that the fantastic work being done in our great city is being rolled out.

“Our aim is to transform how the hospitality industry is perceived and encourage students to consider it as a viable career option.

“We take pride in offering essential contacts and information, fostering the integration of young talent into the hospitality field and driving positive change”.

Laura Johnson, hotels and schools liaison manager and co-deliverer of the initiative, added: “Hospitality is one of Greater Manchester’s 15 significant growth sectors and so, we need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to both showcase opportunities and harness the industry superstars of the future.

“It’s well documented that the sector suffers from significant recruitment issues and Hospitality Connect aims to tackle that head on by nurturing a future talent pool.

“By fusing curriculum with employment encounters, we can provide a real flavour of life within hospitality and shine a light on the sector within the Greater Manchester economy.”

Australian Open: Day five round-up – Swiatek and Alcaraz advance but Rybakina stunned in classic

World number one Iga Swiatek conceded she was “already at the airport” before hitting back to see off Danielle Collins and advance to the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

Swiatek trailed 4-1 in the final set to the gritty American – who beat her in the 2022 semi-finals at Melbourne Park – only to dig deep to come through 6-4 3-6 6-4.

“Honestly, I was already at the airport,” said a relieved Swiatek.

“I didn’t feel like I had control over this match (but) I wanted to fight till the end. I’m happy that I was solid and I just believed till the end.”

There were two surprise exits with third seed Elena Rybakina going out following an epic contest against Anna Blinkova while fifth seed Jessica Pegula was beaten by Clare Burel.

Blinkova saved six match points – and needed 10 herself – in prevailing 6-4 4-6 7-6 (22/20) in a match that concluded with the longest breaker in a singles match in grand slam history.

Pegula’s exit was less dramatic, a limp 6-4 6-2 defeat.

Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu saw her return to grand slam tennis ended by a 6-4 4-6 6-4 defeat to China’s Wang Yafan.

The Brit fought hard but struggled physically in just her fourth match back after wrist and ankle surgeries.

In a bad day for the British women, Katie Boulter also went out, beaten by another Chinese player, Zheng Qinwen.

On the men’s side, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev both advanced but in very different ways.

Alcaraz dropped a set but prevailed 6-4 6-7 (3/7) 6-3 7-6 (7/3) against Lorenzo Sonego while Zverev was another player thinking of the trip home during his match against Lukas Klein.

Klein belied his ranking of 163 by taking hold of the contest but the German found a way through courtesy of two tie-breaks, winning 7-5 3-6 4-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (10/7).

Zverev said: “I was thinking there’s a Qantas flight at 11pm tonight straight to Dubai and then one home. A lot of the time I was a spectator in the match. I was just witnessing whether he’s going to hit a winner or miss.”

Eleventh seed Casper Ruud also needed a fifth-set breaker to beat Max Purcell and will now face Cameron Norrie, the Brit seeing off qualifier Giulio Zeppieri in five sets.

Jack Draper is out, though, losing to Tommy Paul, as is eighth seed Holger Rune, who was beaten in four sets by French wildcard Arthur Cazaux.
