The ultimate guide to direct cremation

0

Have you lost a loved one and wondering what to do next? Planning for a respectful send-off to your loved one doesn’t mean that you need to break the bank.

Having a direct cremation can help as it offers the best flexible and affordable memorial service option compared to traditional burial. This article will take you through direct cremation – which is one of the low cost cremation processes.

Understanding the direct cremation process

The process is becoming popular as most families are looking for a cost-effective, simple, and environmentally-friendly funeral service. The process involves your loved one being cremated shortly after their death without any viewing or any traditional service.

The process cuts the costs of a funeral director, a memorial site, a funeral home, and some other costs. In addition, the costs that are usually incurred from holding the body before it is taken to the industrial furnace are minimised as the entire process is done quickly after death.

Features of the direct cremation

The entire process does not include any formal funeral, and many of the costs of traditional funerals are reduced. Below are some of its features:

  • Body cremated immediately after the death – engage with the services of a crematory and not the funeral home, which helps you save some money.
  • The body is cremated in a simple container, not an expensive casket.
  • The memorial service may be held at a later date, hence eliminating the need for an expensive casket and funeral arrangements.
  • No viewing or visiting before the cremation, hence eliminating the need for somebody’s preparations.

How to arrange for a direct cremation

Do you want to involve your loved one in the direct cremation process? Mostly, the staff in the crematory will handle the entire process, which includes the completion of the death certificate and the transporting of the body at a nominal fee.

The crematory will always charge a fraction of the price that the funeral home will charge for the same services. However, you may also work with a funeral home to plan the entire process, and the home can plan for the cremation process and complete the death certificate for an additional small fee.

Making plans for the cremated ashes

The low-cost cremation process may be straightforward, but it is also possible to include some personal and meaningful details that surround the cremation and funeral service of the family member. After the cremation process, the remains can be sealed in a container, and there are different ways that the ashes can be used.

It gives room for the deceased family to plan a meaningful service without any constraints or prices of the traditional burial facilitated by the funeral home. However, the family of the deceased can scatter the ashes of the deceased on the same day or wait to do it after some time; the family has some time to decide.

If you decide the cremated ashes to remain at home, you can choose to put them in a special urn. Choosing specific designs can be one way to represent the identity of the deceased in their final resting place plans.

You can even choose to maintain an environmental focus with some biodegradable urns, which can allow you to bury the ashes without causing harm to the environment. However, such may be less important if the urn is just a representation of a temporary container.

Benefits of the direct cremation process

Cost-direct cremations avoid some extra costs of funeral services, such as the need to pay a funeral director. The process aims at reducing some costs without cutting some corners on giving the deceased a respectful sendoff.

Environmental impact: The process avoids the need to purchase an expensive casket to hold the deceased body. The green cremation can be meaningful as it honors the sustainability values of the deceased’s life.

Flexibility: the entire process can be flexible to the deceased’s family as it allows them to make further arrangements using their timeline and gives them further time to remember the deceased.

Efficient and simple to return remains: – the staff are respectful, and just because of a lack of delays in the chamber, the cremated remains can be returned for the family quicker than they thought.

Direct cremation is one of the best ways to send off your deceased in a more respectful way. However, there are some other small considerations that you need to consider.

Technology – To ensure that all the family members and friends have the chance to honor the deceased during the process, there can be a need for a virtual memorial attendance that can make it sensible to those who cannot attend.

Cremation communication to your loved ones – If you are planning your low cost cremation, it is important to communicate your wishes to your family members. In addition, for the deceased, how the person will be cremated and how the ashes of the deceased can be used can be a topic with lots of emotions. Discussing such in advance can honour everyone’s wishes, and you can avoid future disputes.

Australian Open 2024, Day Seven: Preview, how to watch, order of play and predictions

The Headliners

Iga Swiatek returns to centre stage at the Australian Open tomorrow having survived an almighty scare in her second-round clash with Danielle Collins.

The world number one admitted after her three-set win against the experienced American she was “already at the airport” when she fell 4-1 down in the decider.

Her comeback means she advanced to a clash with rising Czech star Linda Noskova. The 19-year-old enjoys playing Down Under having reached the final in Adelaide last year and the semis in Brisbane a fortnight ago.

Swiatek is confident, however, that having seen off Collins in a highly charged encounter, she is ready for anything.

She said: “I’m ready for every match to be intense. Obviously sometimes it’s more intense with players that have different styles, but she’s also playing really good and really fast. I’ll be ready.

“I don’t mind actually that it was intense [against Collins] because I remember also when I started the tournament with some easy matches, then I felt I was a little bit rusty when the tough moments came.”

Noskova advanced after dodging the Melbourne rain to see off American McCartney Kessler in three sets.

The subplots

Another player who rarely lacks intensity is Carlos Alcaraz and the second seed will look to keep his challenge alive when he takes on 18-year-old Chinese Jerry Shang, ranked 140 in the world.

Shang saw off India’s Sumit Nagal to reach this stage, and he heads into the Alcaraz showdown with nothing to lose.

“Very easy, right?” he said when asked about facing the second seed. “He’s one of the best players on tour. I’ve watched him the whole year. Basically in 2023 he’s had amazing runs, amazing matches in the grand slams.

“For me, again, low expectations. I expect nothing but a really nice crowd.”

Alcaraz has made relatively quiet progress to the last 32 and knows he will have to play well to see off Shang.

“I know he has the level, he’s already there. What I’ve seen so far from him, he’s an unbelievable player, he’s ready to make a good result,” said the Wimbledon and US Open champion.

“I think it’s going to be a fun match to play. For the fans I think it’s going to be great, as well.”

Third seed Daniil Medvedev and sixth seed Alexander Zverev are also in action on Saturday having survived five-set thrillers in round two.

Medvedev hit back from two-sets down to beat Emil Ruusuvuori while Zverev required a match tie-break to edge out Lukas Klein.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Russian as he takes on Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. Zverev meets 19-year-old American Alex Michelsen.

Order of Play – selected matches

Day session (from 00:00 UK time)

Jerry Shang v Carlos Alcaraz

Jelena Ostapenko v Victoria Azarenka

Cameron Norrie v Casper Ruud

Night session (from 08:00 UK time)

Iga Swiatek v Linda Noskova

Felix Auger-Aliassime v Daniil Medvedev

Alexander Zverev v Alex Michelsen

When and how to watch

The Australian Open is available to watch live on Discovery+ and Eurosport in the United Kingdom, with the day session getting under way from 00:00 UK time on Wednesday morning. The night session is scheduled to take place from 8am.

Predictions

Swiatek should have too much for Noskova, as will Alcaraz against Shang and Zverev against Michelsen.

The other stand-out matches could be close, though. Auger-Aliassime will fancy his chances against a potentially jaded Medvedev, whose previous match didn’t finish until well into the early hours of Friday morning. Azarenka, a two-time winner in Melbourne, will hope Ostapenko has one of her erratic days while Ruud should have just enough to see off remaining Brit Norrie.

£100,000 drugs, cash and assets seized as national drugs line runner jailed

0

Mathias Akinyemi has been jailed for his involvement in running a national drugs line.

The 27-year-old man of Ardwick Green North, appeared at Manchester Crown Court this morning, where he was jailed for three years and 11 months.

He had been convicted of possession of criminal cash, and possession with intent to supply Class A and Class B drugs, cocaine and cannabis.

Police intelligence linked Akinyemi to a national county lines operation shipping drugs in bulk and in smaller amounts across the country.

In October, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) carried out a search warrant at Akinyemi’s home where they found controlled drugs, the remnants of what appeared to be plant growing equipment in the attic and bundles of cash.

A quantity of cannabis was recovered with an estimated street worth of £25,000. Officers also found a block of cocaine stuffed inside a sock and hidden in the toilet which was estimated to be worth £30,000 on the streets of Manchester.

Including assets, the total value of goods seized was £100,000.

PC Haydn Cross said: “The jail sentence that’s been secured as a result of this investigation should serve as a stark warning to other county lines offenders. Greater Manchester Police takes a zero-tolerance approach and is relentless in its pursuit of those involved in serious organised crime.

“If you’re concerned about drug-related crime in your area or think someone may be a victim of drug exploitation, please call us on 101.”

Forty arrests made and £20,000 of illegal vapes seized in Oldham

0
Oldham officers arrested 40 people as they carried our early morning warrants on Tuesday.
As part of a proactive policing day, items seized included drug paraphernalia, high-value Rolex watches, a sports car and a loaded firearm.

Arrests were made for a number of offences including drug supply, conspiracy to supply firearms and the importation of controlled substances occurred during the day of action.

Oldham Neighbourhood Team with Trading Standards conducted SIX premises visits to check for illegal vapes and cigarettes. Four premises had items seized totalling 1,313 vapes and 310 packs of illicit cigarettes, with a value of £20,411.

A cannabis farm was uncovered in Chadderton, resulting in a man being arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and a large number of cannabis plants being seized.

The adverse weather conditions resulted in considerably lower than normal traffic operation returns with the check site cancelled. Despite this, there were 19 traffic offence reports issued, 3 vehicle seizures for no insurance and an arrest of a man on suspicion of a public order offence at Derker Metrolink Station.

Officers executed a series of warrants and targeted operational activity, leading to the discovery of a sophisticated chop shop. Chop shops are often linked to car-theft rings as part of a broader organised crime enterprise.

Two recently stolen vehicles were found with their parts stripped and ready to be sold on. One man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to handle stolen goods.

Chief superintendent Phil Hutchinson said: “We had a number of operations take place throughout the day in what was a busy day for our officers across the district.

“These operations are excellent for the public but they are very good for staff morale. It sees a lot of resources, we execute a lot of warrants, and then go out and arrest people, that’s why we joined the police.

“Thanks to the community for their continued support. If you know of criminality, please contact us, either directly through your community team, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Manchester tech group’s £10 million contract wins create 1,500 jobs

A Manchester tech group has secured more than £10m in contract wins to create 1,500 new tech jobs in the UK.

Media City-headquartered IN4 Group has won multiple contracts across its three divisions, including £6.8m from the Department for Education (DfE), to deliver innovation programmes and skills into careers and apprenticeships.

This will impact more than 100,000 people over the next two years, from school students to adults, and will enable fair access to technology careers and digital upskilling whatever their background.

IN4’s Skills City division, one of the largest national digital Skills Bootcamps, has been awarded £6.8 million from the DfE to boost jobs and prosperity in the UK.

This will enable 800 new accelerated apprenticeships in tech, enabling companies to upskill their employees and adopt new technologies to increase productivity.

Mo Isap, CEO of IN4 Group, said: “Securing contract wins across all three of our divisions synergises the way we work and multiplies investment to a greater effect; we enable regional prosperity through the delivery of business productivity and talent development.”

IN4 has also successfully secured the CyberFirst contract in the North West, backed by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), part of GCHQ, and private sector partners – boosting cyber education and helping students to develop valued tech skills. The CyberFirst programme has already generated support from across public and private sectors, including Apex partners: IBM, Northrop Grumman, KPMG UK, QinetiQ and BT.

This follows the UK government’s investment of more than £5 billion into its new National Cyber Force in Samlesbury, Lancashire, and will help meet the need for a highly skilled digital workforce in the emerging North West Cyber Corridor.

Additionally, IN4 will be delivering a £1.4 million contract, Innovate to Scale, from GMCA as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), administered by Salford City Council, through its operating contract at innovation hub HOST, the Home of Skills & Technology in MediaCity.

The target is to create 150 new tech jobs in the Greater Manchester region by March 2025.

Big thank you as 1,900 children receive Christmas gifts

The Rochdale Giving Back Christmas Toy Appeal has been hailed a success as 1,900 less fortunate children had gifts to open on December 25.

Residents and businesses donated more than 6,000 toys and gifts which were sorted and delivered to local homes last month.

Councillor Rachel Massey said: “A huge thank you to everyone who donated. In what has been another hard year for many this has really brought a smile to so many children in need and shown us once again there is still such a strong community spirit and unbelievable kindness in our borough. To see the huge piles of gifts was very moving and I am grateful that so many people took the time to help.”

Helen Walton, from the council’s staff charity Rochdale Giving Back, who runs the appeal and was recognised in the New Year’s honours list this month with a British Empire Medal added: “As well as individual donations we saw many new businesses coming forward and I know families who pooled funds and went on shopping sprees and workplaces who abandoned their Secret Santa to become the ultimate Secret Santa for children. I also thank our volunteers who gave up their time to collect, sort and distribute everything.”

Cardinal Langley School pupils Oliver and Lucy (pictured with Helen Walton) collected more than 80 toys and donations, asking people to bring gifts in to their mum’s salon, R & R Therapy in Middleton.

Since 2013 the appeal has provided festive cheer for thousands of children and teenagers. It is organised by the council’s staff charity in partnership with Rochdale Football Club, Rochdale Riverside and Your Trust.

Businesses and other organisations that helped included A&F Sprinklers, AIG Insurance, The Beach, B&M Bargains,  Cherry Tree Café, Circle Healthcare, Danish Crown, Globe House, Harrisons ICS, The Highfield Hospital, Hunter Price, JGM Agency, Littleborough Boxing Club, Lock 50, Miles Kelly Publishing, Rochdale Fire and Rescue Service, Rochdale Online, The Old Police Station, Railway House Nursery, The Retreat, Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, Rochdale Sixth Form College, Signals IT Ltd, Triad Fabrications, Willow View School, Wilmott Dixon, Fairfield Hospital, The Works and RRG Toyota Rochdale.
