Australian Open: Day five round-up – Swiatek and Alcaraz advance but Rybakina stunned in classic

World number one Iga Swiatek conceded she was “already at the airport” before hitting back to see off Danielle Collins and advance to the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

Swiatek trailed 4-1 in the final set to the gritty American – who beat her in the 2022 semi-finals at Melbourne Park – only to dig deep to come through 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Raducanu trusts in body again, says winning Australian Open return ‘just the beginning’

“Honestly, I was already at the airport,” said a relieved Swiatek.

“I didn’t feel like I had control over this match (but) I wanted to fight till the end. I’m happy that I was solid and I just believed till the end.”

There were two surprise exits with third seed Elena Rybakina going out following an epic contest against Anna Blinkova while fifth seed Jessica Pegula was beaten by Clare Burel.

Blinkova saved six match points – and needed 10 herself – in prevailing 6-4 4-6 7-6 (22/20) in a match that concluded with the longest breaker in a singles match in grand slam history.

Pegula’s exit was less dramatic, a limp 6-4 6-2 defeat.

Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu saw her return to grand slam tennis ended by a 6-4 4-6 6-4 defeat to China’s Wang Yafan.

The Brit fought hard but struggled physically in just her fourth match back after wrist and ankle surgeries.

In a bad day for the British women, Katie Boulter also went out, beaten by another Chinese player, Zheng Qinwen.

On the men’s side, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev both advanced but in very different ways.

Alcaraz dropped a set but prevailed 6-4 6-7 (3/7) 6-3 7-6 (7/3) against Lorenzo Sonego while Zverev was another player thinking of the trip home during his match against Lukas Klein.

Klein belied his ranking of 163 by taking hold of the contest but the German found a way through courtesy of two tie-breaks, winning 7-5 3-6 4-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (10/7).

Zverev said: “I was thinking there’s a Qantas flight at 11pm tonight straight to Dubai and then one home. A lot of the time I was a spectator in the match. I was just witnessing whether he’s going to hit a winner or miss.”

Eleventh seed Casper Ruud also needed a fifth-set breaker to beat Max Purcell and will now face Cameron Norrie, the Brit seeing off qualifier Giulio Zeppieri in five sets.

Jack Draper is out, though, losing to Tommy Paul, as is eighth seed Holger Rune, who was beaten in four sets by French wildcard Arthur Cazaux.

Continuously track your wins and losses, reassessing and adjusting your bankroll management strategy as needed. This prudent approach ensures that your WSOP Online journey remains not just thrilling but sustainable in the long run.

Australian Open 2024, Day Six: Preview, how to watch, order of play and predictions

The Headliners

For a man who has won the Australian Open a record 10 times, Novak Djokovic has cut a lonely figure at times this week.

The world number one has progressed to the third round but it has not been straightforward, having to go four sets against both Dino Prizmic and Alexei Popyrin.

Raducanu trusts in body again, says winning Australian Open return ‘just the beginning’

The Popyrin match also saw him lose his cool, asking a heckler to come down to the court to “say it to my face”.

Djokovic continues to have a difficult relationship with crowds, certainly compared to the other greats of his generation Rafael Nadal and the now-retired Roger Federer.

It means he has to seek out unusual ways to find inner peace and, in Melbourne, that means meditation in front of a “special” tree in the city’s botanical gardens.

The Serb explained: “There’s one particular tree that I’ve been having [a] special relationship with, so to say, in the last 15 years.

“I got connected with that tree. I just liked it. I liked its roots and the trunks and branches and everything. So I started climbing it years ago. That’s it. I just have a connection.”

He will be hoping the tree brings him a certain level of zen when he comes up against 30th seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry, the first-round conqueror of Andy Murray.

Djokovic is a master of coming through when not producing his A game but he accepts he will need to raise his levels to see off the Argentine.

“That’s what it’s going to take for me to go deep in the tournament. I haven’t been playing my best, I’m still trying to find my form,” he said.

“Particularly in the early rounds, you play players that have nothing to lose really. They come out on the centre court and try to play their best match, their best tennis, and I think both my first- and second-round opponents were great quality tennis players.

“I managed to find a way to win in four. That’s what counts in the end, and hopefully, I’ll be able to build as this tournament progresses.”

The Subplots

Earlier on Friday, one of Djokovic’s main challengers for the title, Jannik Sinner, will be in action as he takes on Sebastian Baez. Sinner has not dropped a set so far as he looks to maintain his strong form from the end of last year.

On the women’s side, the headline act is defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.

The Belarusian second seed has dropped just six games in advancing to round three and a meeting with Lesia Tsurenko.

Despite her impressive form, Sabalenka is eager not to get carried away and is focusing on maintaining an even keel.

She said: “”I’m not thinking about confidence. I’m just trying to play my best. If it goes to two sets, I’m happy to win it in two sets. If it’s going to be three sets, I don’t care. I just try to focus on myself and fight for every point.

“It’s not like these two matches give me confidence. It’s tennis. You have to be ready for anything. I’m trying to focus on myself and focus on bringing the best tennis I can.”

Coco Gauff is also in action on Friday as she takes on fellow American Alycia Parks, a player she knows well.

“I used to practice with her and her sister,” Gauff said. “We both lived in Delray Beach, or in that area. I know her very well. I always root for her – obviously not for the next match.

“She has a big game, big serve, big shots, very athletic.”

Order of Play – selected matches

Day session (from 00:00 UK time)

Lesia Tsurenko v Aryna Sabalenka

Jannik Sinner v Sebastian Baez

Luca van Assche v Stefanos Tsitsipas

Alycia Parks v Coco Gauff

Alex De Minaur v Flavio Cobolli

Night session (from 08:00 UK time)

Novak Djokovic v Tomás Martín Etcheverry

Sebastian Korda v Andrey Rublev

Storm Hunter v Barbora Krejcikova

When and how to watch

The Australian Open is available to watch live on Discovery+ and Eurosport in the United Kingdom, with the day session getting under way from 00:00 UK time on Wednesday morning. The night session is scheduled to take place from 8am.

Predictions

Djokovic will get it done – he always does in Melbourne – but he will need to raise his performance levels if he is to have a straightforward night against Etcheverry. He is again playing in the night session so there is the possibility of more interaction with a lively crowd.

Elsewhere, it looks to be a day of few shocks. Sinner, Tsitsipas and De Minaur should all progress with few alarms. If there is to be a surprise, and even then it wouldn’t be seismic, it may come in the match between Korda and Rublev with the American possessing the game to trouble anyone.

Sabalenka, Gauff and Krejcikova should all ease through.

As it nears its 170th anniversary, the company, known for its traditional British biscuits, prides itself on a future that honours its rich heritage and commitment to cost-effective products.

CEO Frank Bird, who began leading the company in May 2023, is positioning Hill Biscuits for continued growth. With a rich background in the bakery industry, including senior roles at Delifrance and Aryzta, Frank is honoured to steer the company through this period of excitement, acknowledging its historical resilience.

The spotlight is now on Hill’s new senior team, which includes Operations Director Simon Worth, CFO Brendon Ward-Banner, and Commercial Director Tracey Meadows. They are at the forefront of driving changes aimed at enhancing working practices, focusing on business performance improvement while setting fresh benchmarks in Quality Control, People Development, and Process Control, reflecting Hill’s steadfast commitment to excellence and customer focus.

Frank Bird’s innovative approach to food manufacturing allows the company to thoroughly analyse processes, identifying efficiency gains that favour both the bakery and its clientele. Looking forward, Hill Biscuits is set to announce significant investments in 2024 to expand its on-site capacity, ensuring it keeps pace with growing product demand and client requirements.

Frank Bird remarked: “The senior team is now leading a transformation of the working practices at the factory, establishing new standards across the company with a data-driven approach. Our focus spans all areas of the business, developing a pivotal point on efficiency and bakery performances, whilst ensuring that quality is at the heart of our enhancements. The delivery of our plans will be supported through improving our emphasis on people development and acquiring natural succession within the business in all key roles, while also having an adaptive focus on process improvement and preventative maintenance.

Adapting to Market Changes

With a shift in the biscuit industry towards higher-end products, Hill Biscuits is capitalising on opportunities in its traditional biscuit lines.

Frank elaborated: “There has been a lot of movement in the market recently with some manufacturers making the decision to follow the premium trend which in turn has created opportunities for Hill’s to expand on its ability in producing traditional quality biscuits, which is what Hill is all about.”

For 2024, Frank is eager to explore co-manufacturing partnerships to reintroduce the Sarah Hill brand, named after a company founder in 1855, featuring premium products including cookies and possibly coated biscuits. This strategy could enhance Hill’s market presence and pave the way for new product lines and partnerships.

Hill Biscuits is planning a substantial capital investment over the next 12 to 18 months to address demand and customer requirements.

Frank added: “There is an equal significance placed on process and product development, creativity should always extend to operating methods as much as product design, this is where we are focussing our capital investments. Leveraging my experiences, along with the knowledge within the team, we are meticulously scrutinising our business, identifying inefficiencies, and adjusting practices to optimise productivity, enabling us to manage capability and costs without compromising quality.”

Reflecting on Hill Biscuits’ recent developments and future factory investments, Steve Greenhalgh, Executive Chairman, commented: “We are confident in our strategies and excited about developing the future of the company to meet the demand for our everyday biscuits. We are in a strong position where we can lead on cost and value, with a quality range of products.”

Hill Biscuits, with the backing of main shareholder LDC Private Equity, is poised for a new era of growth and prosperity.

Homeowners say no to solar panels because they’re “ugly”

0

Brits are turning their backs on having eco-friendly solar panels installed on their homes because they are deemed too ugly, research has revealed.

The devices, which convert sunlight into electricity, are playing a major part in the UK’s bid to reduce its carbon emissions.

But new research commissioned by energyadvicehelpline.org has found some UK homeowners would turn their nose up at solar energy even if it was free, due to aesthetics.

Some 21 per cent of homeowners said they would reject the offer of free solar panels being installed at their properties, and of those respondents, 35 per cent said the reason was because they are ugly.

Increasingly common

Ryan Harrison, director at energyadvicehelpline.org said: “Solar panels are becoming an increasingly common sight on homes across the country, and there’s no doubt they will become more and more popular in the future.

“It’s a clean and green renewable energy source that will help us reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and help the UK’s bid to reach net zero carbon emissions.

“However, it’s clear that large sections of the population remain to be convinced on whether it’s worthwhile or not having them installed.

“Our research shows just a fifth of homeowners would accept the offer of free solar panel installation, while a quarter are undecided.

“And the reasons for refusal range from being deemed unsightly or ugly to being suspicious of anything that is offered at zero cost.”

Energyadvicehelpline.org is a leading energy expert service helping people discover government-backed grants they can apply for to cut the cost of making their home more energy efficient.

These include the ECO4 Scheme, which started last year, that provides insulation, air source heat pump systems and the installation of solar panels for renewable energy.

Survey

The company teamed up with firm OnePoll to quiz 1,000 UK homeowners on issues ranging from attitudes towards renewable energy sources to experiences with rising bills.

Some 54 percent of respondents said they would accept the offer of having solar panels installed for free.

Of those, 90 per cent said it is because it would reduce the cost of their energy bills, while 72 per cent said it’s because they are good for the environment.

Furthermore, 44 per cent of homeowners said they would welcome free solar panels because it would increase the value of their homes.

Deciding Whether To Refurbish Your Office Space Or Relocate It

0

As companies evolve and grow, the need to assess and improve the office environment becomes inevitable. The question that arises at such junctures is whether to refurbish the existing office space or embark on the relocation journey for your business. Both options come with their unique set of considerations, advantages, and challenges. This article will delve into the factors to consider when making this significant decision.

Evaluating The Current Workspace

Before deciding whether to refurbish or relocate, a thorough evaluation of the current office space is essential. It will involve considering factors such as the size of the workspace, its layout, and overall functionality. Take note of the existing infrastructure, technology, and the wear and tear that may have accumulated over the years. It is a good idea to create a list of the things that you want in your office in an ideal world and then see if it is possible to include them if you decide to do an office re-fit.

Space Utilisation

Assess how effectively your business and its employees are utilising the available space. Are there areas that remain underutilised, or are certain departments cramped for space? Understanding the spatial dynamics will be pivotal in deciding whether refurbishment or relocation is the more viable option for your business.

Technological Infrastructure

The pace at which technology evolves can render office spaces outdated quicker than anticipated. Evaluate whether the current infrastructure supports the technological requirements of your business. If not, an upgrade may be necessary to enhance efficiency and productivity.

Employee Feedback

Engage with your employees to gather insights into their experiences within the current workspace. Identify pain points, preferences, and any challenges they may be facing. Employee satisfaction and well-being are critical for productivity, making their feedback invaluable in decision-making. Listening to your employees can help you decide the best move for your company and give some ideas when planning the refurbishment or fit-out of the office space for your business.

Refurbishing the Office Space

Refurbishing an existing office space can be cost-effective and less disruptive than relocation. Here are key considerations when opting for a refurbishment:

Cost Analysis

Begin by conducting a comprehensive cost analysis of refurbishing the current space. You must factor in expenses related to design, construction, furniture, and potential downtime during the refurbishment process. Workplace Trends

Stay abreast of the latest workplace trends and design concepts. A well-designed and modern office space can significantly impact employee morale and productivity. Consider incorporating flexible workspaces, breakout areas, and eco-friendly designs to align with contemporary workplace standards.

Sustainability

Refurbishing allows for the incorporation of sustainable and energy-efficient practices. From energy-efficient lighting to eco-friendly materials, a refurbished space can enhance the working environment and contribute to your company’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Brand Image

The physical workspace is an extension of your company’s brand identity. A carefully refurbished office can convey a sense of innovation, professionalism, and commitment to excellence. It can positively impact client perceptions and employee pride in their workplace.

Relocating to a New Space

Relocating an office is a more extensive and resource-intensive option than refurbishing an existing space. However, it may be the right choice for your business under certain circumstances. Consider the following factors when contemplating relocation:

Growth & Expansion

If your business is experiencing rapid growth, the current space may be insufficient. Relocating to a larger workspace allows you to accommodate new staff, departments, and facilities, supporting the expansion of your operations.

Market Access & Image

The location of your office can significantly impact your business. Relocating to a more central or prestigious area may enhance your company’s image and accessibility to clients, partners, and talent. Assess the strategic advantages of a new location in relation to your business objectives.

Cost Of Acquisition

Evaluate the cost of acquiring a new space compared to refurbishing the existing one. While relocation involves upfront costs, it may be a more cost-effective long-term solution, especially if the current workspace poses limitations that you cannot adequately address through refurbishment.

Technology Integration

Relocating provides an opportunity to implement state-of-the-art technology seamlessly. Newer office spaces are often equipped with advanced infrastructure, meeting the demands of modern business operations, and facilitating a smooth integration of cutting-edge technologies.

The decision to refurbish or relocate your office space is complex and requires careful consideration of various factors. Assessing the current workspace, understanding business needs, and involving key stakeholders in the decision-making process are crucial steps. Whether you refurbish your existing space or decide to relocate offices, the goal is to create a work environment that aligns with your business objectives, fosters productivity, and enhances the overall well-being of your team. Each option presents unique opportunities, and the key lies in making a decision that propels your business forward in the most effective and sustainable way possible.
