Six Nations 2024 – Scotland v England: Furbank recalled as Borthwick springs surprise

England coach Steve Borthwick has made five changes to his side for Saturday’s Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland at Murrayfield.

The inclusion of George Furbank at full-back is the eye-raising move with the Northampton man coming in for Freddie Steward, who is left out of the squad altogether.

Furbank has won six caps and has been rewarded for his impressive form with the Saints this season.

Centre Fraser Dingwall, who started England’s 16-14 win over Wales a fortnight ago, is left out in favour of Ollie Lawrence while Danny Care, Dan Cole and Ellis Genge were also named in the XV.

Care makes his first Six Nations start in six years, coming in for the injured Alex Mitchell at scrum-half with props Cole and Genge replacing Joe Marler and Will Stuart.

There was no place for the fit-again Manu Tuilagi.

“We’re pleased with the start we’ve made to our Guinness Six Nations campaign but know that a difficult test awaits us in Edinburgh against an in-form Scotland team,” said Borthwick.

“The atmosphere is always special for any Calcutta Cup match and I’m sure this weekend’s game at Murrayfield will be no different.

“This group of players are looking forward to the challenge on Saturday and to creating some very special memories.”

5 Businesses to Start in 2024

0

If you want to take control of your earning potential in 2024, it’s time to start your own business. Starting a business can be a daunting venture, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Your business can help you to explore your passions and build a career that is more meaningful and rewarding.

It’s never too late to explore your passions and build a business out of something that you love. So, if you’re curious about what businesses could be successful in 2024, read on to learn more about 5 potential ventures that could turn out to be rather lucrative.

Wedding planner

As long as people are still getting married, wedding planners will be in demand. Wedding planners are involved in arranging vendors, helping couples to choose the right colour scheme and design elements for their big day. Wedding planners also provide coordination support on the day so that the happy couple can focus on having fun. You’ll need a creative touch, excellent organisational skills and impeccable communication skills to become a successful freelance wedding planner.

Pet care business

We’re a nation of pet lovers, so it makes sense that pet businesses always flourish. Whether you’re a dog groomer, a dog walker or dog trainer, you could quickly turn your passion into profit if you know how to market your skills well. Many people got pets during lockdown and are now feeling the guilt of going back to the office and having to leave their pets alone all day. This is why boutique doggie day care and dog walking is taking off. An increased thirst for travel is also driving demand for pet sitting services.

Mobile tanning salon

People are waking up to the risks of sun tanning and looking for sunless ways to enjoy a healthy and golden glow. Mobile tanning salons help individuals to get the spray tan they love without the stress of having to go out in public with the guide tan still in place. You could get your business started with minimal investment. All you’ll need is some tanning equipment, social media marketing and tanning salon booking software. Social media and word of mouth recommendations will help your business to grow.

Fitness or wellness coach

People are taking their health and wellness more seriously than ever before. If you have a passion for fitness, yoga or healthy living, you could share this passion with others and help them to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle. Make sure you invest in the right insurance before starting as a freelance fitness coach to ensure your business is protected if something goes wrong.

Meal prep delivery

Everyone wants to eat healthy and nutritious meals, but not everyone has the time to plan their meals, shop for fresh ingredients, cook in bulk and prepare meals for the week ahead. This is where bespoke meal prep delivery comes in handy. If you have good knowledge of nutrition and know your way around a commercial kitchen, you could start your own meal prep delivery service to help people meet their nutritional goals with ease. If you going to deliver locally, you may need a fridge van for this.

Closing thoughts

New businesses are starting all the time, and if you want to be among these success stories, you need to be willing to take a risk and bet on yourself. Starting a business that is sparked by your passion can be daunting, because you’re investing more of yourself in your business. But this is also a great way to track a path for success, because your customers will be able to see the love and care that you put into everything you do, making it a more authentic customer experience.

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart to retire

Celtic’s former England goalkeeper Joe Hart has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

The 36-year-old, who won 75 caps for his country, will quit the game when the Scottish season ends in May.

He told the club’s official website: “As of June 1, I will stop playing professional football. This is something I have thought about for a while.

“There is no right or wrong time but the way this club works – there is so much heart and soul poured into what we are doing as a football club. In the grand scheme of the club, the support base and the conversations around it, there is obviously a conversation around the goalkeeping position for next season so I think it’s really important, with the blessing of the club, that we get the message out there so there’s one less thing to speculate about. I am definitely not going to be there next season.”

Hart came through the ranks at hometown club Shrewsbury Town, making his debut as a 17-year-old against Gravesend and Northfleet in the National League.

He came to the attention of Manchester City who signed him in 2006 for a fee in the region of £100,000. Loan spells at Tranmere and Blackpool followed before he established himself as first-choice at the Etihad Stadium.

He made his England debut in 2008 and, despite losing his place at City to Shay Given and subsequently being sent out on loan to Birmingham, went on to win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two EFL Cups.

His City career effectively ended with the appointment of Pep Guardiola as manager in 2016.

He was sent on loan to Torino and spent the 2017-18 campaign on a similar deal at West Ham.

He left City on a permanent deal in August 2018, joining Burnley before a season at Tottenham was followed by a move to Celtic in 2021.

In Glasgow, he has helped the Hoops to two Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish League Cups and a Scottish Cup.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers said: “Joe has enjoyed a phenomenal career and I know will be huge miss to the game when he finally retires from playing football in the summer.

“For all he has done in football, Joe deserves huge praise and congratulations, he has been such a brilliant asset to Celtic of course and the wider game at the highest levels, domestically and internationally.

“But more than that, he is a tremendous man, just brilliant to work with, someone who I know has been a great team-mate to so many throughout his career and a player who never gives anything but his absolute best. Each and every day his work ethic is an example to all in football.

“While he will be a real loss on the pitch, I know he will stay in football in some form. It will always be part of his life and I am sure whatever he does after the summer time, everyone at the club wishes him nothing but the very best of success.

“I totally understand and respect Joe’s reasons for making this announcement and for being clear to the club and our fans on his future.

“I also know he will continue to work right through this season with the same intensity, commitment and drive which he has always been known for.”

F1 Bahrain testing: Session ahead of 2024 Formula One season abandoned after Hamilton, Leclerc affected by drain cover

The morning session of day two of testing ahead of the 2024 Formula One season ended prematurely when a loose drain cover caused issues at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The first red flag of pre-season testing came out because of the drain on the entry kurbing at Turn 11, with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc hitting loose metal debris.

Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who was taking part in his first testing session with Mercedes’ new W15 car, also had to leave the track.

“Repairs are underway and it is expected that the repair will be concluded within one hour,” a statement from organisers said, adding that the afternoon session would begin an hour earlier than scheduled (11am GMT, finishing at 4pm).

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso shifted his position to avoid potential damage, and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was telling marshals about the problem as Leclerc hit the metal, according to BBC Sport.

Sainz would have been reminded of the destruction to his SF-23 when he hit a drain cover in the first practice session for last season’s Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Leclerc’s car was hidden after he joined the rest of the drivers on track in returning to the pits, while Hamilton had his car lifted to allow Mercedes to check its floor.

F1 Bahrain testing results

Leclerc had set the pace during the three hours of testing that took place, finishing more than half a second ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Logan Sergeant was third for Williams, followed by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, Alonso and Hamilton.

Track officials had hoped to resume racing after an inspection but the extent of the problem meant that the session had to be called off.

“To finally be here at track is really what we’ve all been waiting for,” Red Bull chief executive officer Peter Bayer told Sky Sports F1 before the action was curtailed.

“Yesterday went quite well. We went out, we had no big issues. The team has made an amazing effort.”

Six Nations 2024: Ireland host Wales, Scotland face England and Italy visit France – preview, how to watch and predictions

It has been a long fortnight for Rugby Union fans, with the Six Nations taking its fallow week after round two.

However, the competition is back with a bang on Saturday, with Ireland looking to preserve their Grand Slam hopes at home to Wales in the early kick-off.

Then, all eyes will be on Murrayfield as old enemies Scotland and England face off for the Calcutta Cup. The old trophy is not the only thing on the line there, though, with Steve Borthwick’s visitors one of just two teams with a perfect record after two games. Could they yet challenge Ireland?

The weekend’s action wraps up in Lille, with France looking to build on their win over Scotland against Italy.

Here, we run the rule over the key storylines ahead of the third set of Six Nations fixtures.

Ireland v Wales (Saturday, 14:15)

It’s fair to say Ireland couldn’t have enjoyed a better start to their Six Nations campaign.

Having posted a statement victory in France on the opening night, Andy Farrell’s team crushed Italy 36-0 in their second fixture. Ireland have won their two games by a combined margin of 57 points, and no other match in this year’s tournament has been decided by more than a four-point margin.

Ireland have made light of suggestions they could struggle in the aftermath of Johnny Sexton’s retirement, with Jack Crowley filling the void at number 10 and scoring his first international try last time out.

Scrum-half Conor Murray sees plenty of similarities between Crowley and Sexton, saying of the former: “He’s still a young 10.

“If you think about Johnny when he was that age, he was still learning and making mistakes and doing really good things too, so that’s just part of the journey for Jack. He’s been really impressive and he’s very well-respected within the group.”

Wales, meanwhile, are one of two teams still awaiting their first victory, having squandered a half-time lead in their 16-14 loss to England at Twickenham on matchday two.

While Warren Gatland’s youthful team will be big outsiders in Dublin, assistant coach Rob Howley says they will look to stymie Ireland’s rhythm.

“The challenge for us is making them as uncomfortable as we can,” Howley said. “For every minute that we can do that we can ask different questions of them.”

Scotland v England (Saturday, 16:45)

The headline fixture of matchday three pits Scotland and England against one another at Murrayfield, with the hosts chasing a fourth successive win over their old rivals.

The week off will have been particularly welcome for Scotland, who were denied victory over France in bizarre fashion last time out. A TMO review denied Sam Skinner a potential matchwinning try at the death, with that contentious decision capping a dreary game which boss Gregor Townsend described as “a blight on rugby”.

Having had a fortnight to reset and refocus, Scotland will be desperate to inflict more Calcutta Cup woe on England, having triumphed 29-23 at Twickenham last year.

Reflecting on that victory, Townsend said: “Last year meant so much to me from a personal point of view.

“I thought it was going to be my last Six Nations, so I was probably more emotional after that game than others I’ve coached.”

From England’s perspective, Saturday’s game is about much more than revenge, with Steve Borthwick’s side still perfect after two games.

They have not been entirely convincing, having to fight back for their victories over Italy and Wales, but defence coach Felix Jones is backing them to grow as the tournament progresses.

“It’s a work in progress. There are loads of things still to work on, but also some good bits that we want to retain,” he said last week.

“We are at a level where you can’t blind yourself to things that need attention, but you want to draw positives from a tournament where winning counts.

“Our ambition is to win each game with the end goal of trying to win the Six Nations this year. But there is still a long way to go.”

France v Italy (Sunday, 15:00)

England’s emergence as perhaps the most likely challengers to Ireland owes much to France’s struggles, with Fabien Galthie’s team underwhelming thus far.

Galthie came under fire following France’s comprehensive defeat to Ireland, and only that aforementioned TMO call saved them from another defeat in Scotland.

Already missing Antoine Dupont after he chose to sit out the Six Nations, France will also be without stand-in captain Gregory Alldritt when they welcome Italy to Lille on Sunday, with the back-rower suffering a gash to his thigh last time out.

Despite France’s issues, nothing less than a convincing performance – and scoreline – will be deemed acceptable against Italy, against whom France have won 14 straight games since suffering a surprise defeat to the Azzurri in the 2013 Six Nations.

France crushed Italy 60-7 in Lyon at last year’s World Cup, and with last week’s win in Scotland doing little to quieten criticism of Galthie, the France boss needs his team to put on a similar show on Sunday.

How to watch

Every game of the Six Nations will be shown by either the BBC or ITV in the UK. Ireland versus Wales and France versus Italy will be screened by ITV this weekend, with the BBC showing England’s headline meeting with Scotland on Saturday.

Predictions

Round three of this year’s Six Nations features two heavily-fancied home teams in Ireland and France, either side of a difficult contest to call at Murrayfield.

Wales don’t possess the attacking quality to threaten an upset of a powerful Ireland side, though they do have the necessary grit to prevent a total blowout. We’re backing Farrell’s team by 15 points in Saturday’s early game, while France should earn a morale-boosting win over Italy on Sunday, complete with the bonus point.

In the main event, we’re siding with Scotland by the narrowest of margins. Borthwick’s team have made a habit of causing their own problems so far in the Six Nations, with poor discipline and basic errors almost costing them against Wales.

Scotland are far more accomplished than England’s last opponents and will be doubly incentivised after their controversial defeat to France, so we’re backing them to nick it by three.

India v England: Robinson recall excites captain Stokes

Captain Ben Stokes is excited to see the new-look Ollie Robinson get the opportunity to bowl England back into the series against India.

Robinson was today named in the team for the fourth Test in Ranchi that starts tomorrow, replacing Mark Wood, in what will be his first appearance for England since July.

Ratcliffe says United are lacking the right culture

The 30-year-old has an impressive record at Test level having taken 76 wickets at an average of 22.21 but injuries have stalled his career with question marks also surrounding his fitness levels.

Robinson has worked hard over the winter to get himself in shape and has finally been rewarded with England hoping he can help them hit back from 2-1 down with two games to play.

Stokes said: “I’m really excited for him to get his go.

“He’s been an incredible professional, the way in which he’s operated. Not playing the first three games is extremely disappointing, especially for someone who has played such a vital role over the past two years.

“The way he kept everything going, going and going through the obvious disappointment of not playing is a great way to operate. Now the chance is here. He has done everything he has needed to and I’m really looking forward to seeing him out on the park again.”

Robinson is likely to share the new ball with the evergreen James Anderson who, at 41 years of age, is just four wickets short of 700 in Test cricket.

“If you’re a young fast bowler, Jimmy Anderson is the one person who you want as your role model,” added Stokes.

“Not only the amount of wickets he’s got but the fact he can keep going at his age. Backing a very high-workload Test match in five days, being fit and raring to go, and feeling as fresh as a fiddle.

“Jimmy’s wickets, his longevity and his age, he’s an unbelievable role model to all young kids out there who want to be a fast bowler when they grow up.

“Even saying he’s approaching 700 Test wickets as a fast bowler is incredible. I think he’ll know that, but I don’t think that will be at the top of his mind for this week, just because of where we’re at in the series.”

The pitch in Ranchi has already caused plenty of debate with England vice-captain Ollie Pope describing it as “platey”.

Stokes said: “It looked interesting, didn’t it? I don’t know. I can’t say much.

“If you looked down one side of opposite ends it just looked different to what I am used to seeing, especially out in India. It looked green and grassy up in the changing-rooms, but then you go out there, it looked different. Very dark and crumbly and quite a few cracks in it.”

Pharmica Tackles the Challenge of AI-Generated Fake Reviews in the Digital Pharmacy Realm

The proliferation of fraudulent reviews has underscored the urgent need for online pharmacies to authenticate customer feedback, ensuring patients can rely on accurate information for healthcare decisions.

Recent investigations into the ability of generative AI software to create deceptive patient testimonials have shown that over 30% of such counterfeit reviews, particularly those generated by tools like ChatGPT, are undetectable by existing commercial AI detection solutions.

This is concerning, given Business Insider‘s report that fake reviews, including AI-produced ones, make up about a third of all online feedback. According to research from the UK government, the prevalence of fictitious reviews on e-commerce platforms exceeds 27%.

In an effort to reverse this trend and restore consumer confidence, leading online pharmacies such as Pharmica are embracing closed-loop review systems like Feefo, which validate reviews by confirming they are from genuine customers and patients.

The Essential Role of Verified Customer Reviews in Online Pharmacies

The online pharmacy industry’s rapid expansion highlights the critical importance of verified customer reviews in building a transparent and trustworthy relationship between pharmacies like Pharmica and their clientele.

By earning the Feefo Platinum Service Award 2024 for the highest volume of verified reviews in the online pharmacy category, Pharmica is actively combating misinformation and deceit.

This distinction is all the more significant considering the BBC’s exposé on the healthcare sector’s use of counterfeit reviews to illegitimately expand market share, endangering patient safety.

Pharmica’s Commitment to Real Reviews via Feefo

Feefo’s closed-loop system allows only verified buyers to submit reviews, precluding fake feedback by authenticating each transaction prior to sending review requests.

Pharmica, with a 4.9/5 rating and 59,094 verified reviews on Feefo as of 19th February 2024, stands as the most reputable online pharmacy in the UK, as illustrated in Graph 1.

Graph 1

Rishi Krishna, Pharmica’s Founder and CEO, stated: “It appears to be easier than ever for AI tools to be used to write fake customer reviews and feedback. It’s especially concerning in the online pharmacy industry, where such reviews can impact the ability of patients and customers to make informed decisions about their health. At Pharmica, we hold authenticity in the highest regard and go above and beyond to present genuine customer feedback with complete transparency. We’re honoured to win this [Feefo Platinum Trusted Service] award with the largest number of genuine reviews, along with the highest review rating in our category 4 years in a row.”

Anticipating a 5.95% yearly growth in the online pharmacy market from 2024 to 2028 and considering the relentless evolution of AI technologies, the necessity for authenticated reviews on platforms like Feefo is more crucial than ever to safeguard consumer health in an AI-influenced world.

‘24’ Series Number Plates Deemed Too Offensive by DVLA Revealed

The DVLA has unveiled the complete list of number plates banned in 2024, including contentious plates like *W24 NKR, SL24 GSS, and SH24 GED, due to their inappropriate connotations.

The introduction of new vehicle registrations in March and September means vehicles registered after March 1 will include ‘24’ in their registration, and those after September 1 will feature ‘74’. With millions of plates issued in each new series, it’s inevitable that some combinations may form words or phrases considered rude or offensive.

To prevent such occurrences, the DVLA thoroughly reviews all potential number plates, disqualifying any deemed offensive from being issued.

Tony Clark, an authority on number plates and Marketing Manager at Plates4Less, sought to uncover the DVLA’s list of prohibited plates through a Freedom of Information request, specifically targeting those banned for the ‘24’ series launching on March 1.

This inquiry revealed a list packed with hundreds of plate combinations ruled as inappropriate, including BO24 LOK, FA24 NNY, AS24 HLE, SH24 GGY, SK24 NKZ, and PE24 VRT.

Tony commented, “Rude or humorous private plates have always been popular, and can be a lot of fun. People choose private plates like these to customise their vehicles without personalising them. Some want to shock and others want to amuse their fellow road users”.

He also remarked, “Sometimes, the DVLA restrictions just lead to people being more creative, and trying to find rude plates that the DVLA didn’t think to ban.”

Plates4Less reports a high frequency of searches for rude or offensive words, with an average of 345 such searches daily. Notably, searches for the ‘C word’ rank as the 29th most common, with around 21 daily searches, while ‘F*ck’ is searched for 12.42 times per day.

Tony added, “Customers use our website just to find funny plates and share them with friends, which we encourage! We even have a sharing tool built-in to make this easier.

“Outside of rude registrations, some of the most popular searches we get are names, like Sam, Dan, and Amy.”

Though the DVLA strives to keep offensive registrations off the roads, Plates4Less has curated a list of risqué yet legal plates, including S3XXX, OH69, FUN, OO69AAH, and PEN155. For more information, click here.
