City met Madrid at the last four stage last season, drawing 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu before a rousing 4-0 win at the Etihad. They then went on to beat Inter in the final to land the trophy for the first time.

City will fancy their chances of doing similar this time round, although Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid will be desperate for revenge.

Should they progress, an all-Premier League semi-final may lie in wait.

Bayern have been underwhelming this season – coach Thomas Tuchel has already announced he will be leaving in the summer – with the Champions League their last realistic hope of silverware following an early exit from the DFB-Pokal while they trail Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen by 10 points in the Bundesliga.

The first leg against Arsenal will also see former Tottenham striker Harry Kane make a return to North London.

Atletico, who needed penalties to get past Inter on Wednesday night, will be confident of progressing past Borussia Dortmund while the final quarter-final clash sees a repeat of one of the most famous Champions League ties of all time.

PSG led Barcelona 4-0 from the first leg of their round of 16 meeting in 2017 only for Luis Enrique’s men to hit back and win the second leg 6-1 – Sergi Roberto scoring a dramatic 95th-minute winner.

Quarter-finals

Atletico Madrid v Borussia Dortmund

The quarter-final first legs will be played on April 9 and 10, with the second legs the following week. The semi-finals take place on April 30 and May 1, with the return legs on May 7 and 8. Wembley will host the final on Saturday, June 1.

Manchester’s AO Arena to host Davis Cup finals group stage

0

The LTA has confirmed Manchester’s AO Arena will again host a Davis Cup finals group stage later this year.

The event – a key stage of the men’s ‘World Cup of Tennis’ – will enable fans up and down the country to see some of the world’s best players in action.

Britain will take on three other nations from September 10-15. Three other nations will host the three other Group Stage events.

As last year, Britain will join Spain, the 2023 finalists Italy and Australia, as well as 12 other nations, each split into four groups of four countries to be decided by a draw next week.

Each nation will play three times over the six-day competition. The top two nations from each of the four groups will advance to a quarterfinal ‘Final 8’ knock-out competition held in Malaga between November 19-24.

Last year Britain emerged from a very competitive group to make the Final 8, saving four match points against France to win 1-6 7-6(4) 7-6(6) in one of the most memorable Davis Cup doubles matches in history, staged before a record GB crowd of 13,000 spectators.

Bigger and better

LTA director of major events and digital, Chris Pollard said: “We are delighted to bring the Davis Cup Finals Group Stage back to Manchester again this September since we saw first-hand how the fans embraced the event and how their support helped our team win their group in 2023.  We are looking forward to working with our partners at Manchester City Council, Marketing Manchester to make the Davis Cup even bigger and better this year, helping open up our sport to many more people.”

Leader of Manchester City Council, Bev Craig, said: “We can’t wait to welcome the Davis Cup back to Manchester again this September after such a brilliant tournament here last year.  Already known the world over as a great sporting city, we’re a perfect fit for the tournament which will provide a welcome boost for the local economy as well as being great news for tennis fans here in the UK and the North.

“We also know from last year how much excitement the tournament generated locally across Manchester – particularly amongst the youngest tennis players at our clubs and parks – and we’ll be looking to further build on this legacy of inspiration again this year.”

Tennis legacy

Victoria Braddock, managing director of Marketing Manchester, said: “With Manchester’s rich legacy in tennis, we are poised to deliver an unparalleled experience for tennis fans across the world and offer a prestigious platform for the sport’s top talents.

“This event further elevates the excitement surrounding Greater Manchester’s 2024/25 sports calendar, featuring highlights such as the World Snooker Tour Championships in April, the Manchester Open Squash Championships, and the Great Manchester Run in May, and culminating in the Women’s Rugby World Cup in August 2025. We eagerly anticipate welcoming the global sports community to Greater Manchester and showcasing the fantastic venues across the region.”

In 2015, Britain won the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years, reaching two more semi-finals and three quarter-finals since then.  Manchester is the fifth different city to host the Davis Cup in Britain over the last 11 years, joining Coventry, Glasgow, London and Birmingham.

The draw for the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals will takes place in London on Tuesday, March 19 at 2pm, and will be streamed live on the Davis Cup website.

Indian Wells 2024: Alcaraz calls bee attack at tennis tournament ‘most unusual match I have ever played’

0

Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz said his Indian Wells 2024 quarter-final win over Alexander Zverev was “the most unusual match I have ever played” after the world number two was stung on the side of the head when a swarm of bees descended on court.

Umpire Mohamed Lahyani was affected by the invasion and suspended play in the third game when the bizarre incident, which required a beekeeper to visit the court and spectators to be removed from one corner, took place.

“I saw some bees around but I thought it was just a few of them,” said Alcarez, whose match was delayed by almost two hours.

“But I saw the sky and there were thousands flying, stuck in my hair, going to me. It was crazy.

“I tried to stay away from them but it was impossible. I’m a little bit afraid of them. I had to stay safe and I was running everywhere.

“I’ve never seen something like that. It’s going to be remembered for that: not for the tennis, not for anything else, but for the bees.”

Bee invasion Indian Wells ‘unprecedented’

A statement from the organisers of the California tournament said: “This area, at this time of the year, can be a hotspot for bees, with all the flowers blooming and blossoming.

“In addition, the bees can be attracted to low frequency sound waves and music bass, as they feel the vibrations and are attracted to those locations.”

The tournament website called the situation “unprecedented”. “Players were forced to retreat to the tunnel as play was paused due to the hazardous conditions on court,” it said.

“But luckily, a local Palm Desert beekeeper was called to the rescue and able to quickly mitigate the situation. There’s truly never a dull day in ‘Tennis Paradise’.”

Alcaraz will play Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals on Saturday, calling the contest “the most difficult match that I’m going to play this year.”

Italian Sinner extended his unbeaten run to 19 matches by beating Jiri Lehecka 6-3 6-3.

Leading Edge in Spinal Healthcare: Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın’s Revolutionary Techniques in Microdiscectomy and Spinal Canal Stenosis Surgery

Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın is at the forefront of spinal healthcare innovation, offering exceptional medical services and significantly advancing the field of back pain treatment through his extensive experience and dedicated career in spinal surgery.

With a prolific background, having conducted upwards of 2800 aneurysm operations and over 400 AVM procedures, Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın is renowned for his tailored approach to patient care, consistently placing a high value on the well-being and satisfaction of his patients throughout their treatment journey.

The Yunus Aydın Method

This groundbreaking method, developed by Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın, signifies a major advancement in the realm of spinal surgery, introducing precise treatments for conditions like spinal stenosis and spinal cord compression without the need for metal implants, thereby minimising tissue damage. The technique encompasses day-case procedures for herniated discs, non-surgical options for cervical disc herniation, and effective interventions for spinal canal stenosis due to neck calcification.

Employing a unilateral approach for bilateral decompression in cases of spinal stenosis, Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın has successfully applied this method in over 4,000 instances across 23 years. “Our goal is to preserve the natural structure and mobility of the spine while providing more room to squeezed spinal nerves,” he articulates. Highlighting the condition’s prevalence among the elderly, he notes that most surgeons opt for instrumented methods which involve extensive, invasive surgery, delaying the patient’s return to everyday activities. He advocates for shorter, less invasive procedures for older patients to mitigate post-surgery complications, emphasizing the importance of enabling patients to walk immediately post-operation.

“By using a unilateral approach, on the symptomatic side, we can decompress the spinal canal stenosis and clean disc herniations effectively, minimizing the risk of ‘Adjacent Segment Disease’ and ensuring a faster return to normal life for our patients.” This innovative technique can address multi-level stenosis through a single incision without compromising the spine’s load-bearing capabilities.

Creating a Natural Window on One Side of the Spine

In addressing spinal stenosis, Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın adopts an innovative technique that steers clear of the issues commonly associated with conventional screw and rod systems. These traditional methods, while effective for traumatic fractures or spinal complications arising from tumour growth, can alter spinal biomechanics, potentially necessitating further surgeries.

Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın’s approach, backed by his extensive experience from over 10,000 surgeries, involves creating a natural window on one side of the spine to carry out the necessary interventions without affecting spinal stability. This method maintains joint mobility and precludes the onset of adjacent segment disease, allowing patients to be discharged within a day of their spinal surgery.

Quicker Recovery through Less Invasive Techniques

“The key to successful spinal surgery lies in respecting the integrity of the spine’s supporting structures,” Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın explains. By employing state-of-the-art instruments like the high-speed drill and Kairison bone cutter, surgeries can be performed in a manner that is less invasive, reduces blood loss, and enhances efficiency. Furthermore, by preserving the yellow ligament during microdiscectomy, tissue damage is minimised, thus decreasing the likelihood of adhesions around the nerves and the risk of unsuccessful back surgery outcomes.

Patients benefit from these cutting-edge spinal procedures with significantly reduced hospital stays, often being discharged on the day of or the day following surgery. The majority resume their regular activities within 15 days, underscoring the minimal invasiveness of these surgical interventions.

Cheltenham Festival 2024: Ferguson and Redknapp steal the headlines while Teahupoo wins the feature race

Sir Alex Ferguson claimed his first two Cheltenham victories on day three of the Festival with Gordon Elliott also having reason to cheer after winning the feature race, the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle.

Trainer Elliott landed his first win at this year’s meeting when Teahupoo justified his status as the 5/4 favourite by cruising home to win by three and three quarter lengths under Jack Kennedy from Flooring Peter (9/1) and Home By The Lee (16/1).

Elliott told 5 Sports Extra: “This was the plan. He runs well fresh. It’s great to get a winner. We have hit the crossbar a few times this week but to win this is unbelievable. I am delighted for the whole team.

“It has been a long couple of days but the horses have been running well. This is a great place to have a winner.

“This was one of our strongest days. We have plenty of chances coming up.”

A footnote from the race was the retirement afterwards of six-time participant and 2019 champion Paisley Park.

His owner Andrew Gemmell told ITV Sport: “He had a great race, a great career, but it is time to bid farewell.

“He’s been marvellous.”

If Elliott stole the limelight in the main event, the first half of the day was dominated by former Manchester United boss Ferguson.

The Scot has enjoyed success globally but never at Cheltenham. That was until his part-owned horse Monmiral came home first in the Pertemps Hurdle Final.

The 25/1 shot, ridden by Harry Cobden, saw off the challenges of Kyntara (16/1), Cuthbert Dibble (11/2 fav) and Bold Endeavour (50/1).

Ferguson’s delight doubled in the next as Protektorat won the Ryanair Chase.

He told ITV: “I’ve been waiting 20 years for a winner and now I’ve had two in about 40 minutes.

“It’s incredible. It’s the FA Cup final, Derby then it’s Cheltenham. Is winning the Champions League or Cheltenham a better feeling? This is much better – now.”

Brothers Harry and Dan Skelton’s excellent Festival continued as they combined to land their fourth winner with Protektorat coming in at 17/2 ahead of 9/4 favourite Envoi Allen and Conflated (11/1).

Jockey Harry said: “It’s fantastic and I can’t believe it, but he really deserved this.

“Izzy [Algieri], who looks after him, is an absolute saint because she puts up with him every day and he’s as mad as a wasp. You’d have to have the patience of a saint.

“He’s so difficult at home and in a race, but today they went really quick up front and it was the first time for a long time that he’s settled; normally he’s always pulling my arms out.”

The Skeltons’ third win came earlier when Grey Dawning won the Turners Novices’ Chase as the 5/2 favourite. Ginny’s Destiny was second at 11/2 with Djelo third at 25/1.

The football/horse racing crossover continued in the fifth race of the day as Shakem Up’arry won the TrustATrader Plate for owner Harry Redknapp, the former manager of West Ham.

“Oh my God, get in there! How good was that? He jumped for fun. What a performance,” Redknapp said.

“My nan got me into racing, she was a bookie’s runner back in the day. She’d get locked up in Poplar Police Station in the East End of London, because it was illegal in those days.

“I love the horses, I love the Festival, I love the people. It means so much.”

Golden Ace was a surprise 10/1 winner of the Ryanair Mares Novices’ Hurdle, a race that was expected to be a battle between Jade de Grugy and Brighterdaysahead while Inothewayurthinkin romped to victory in the final race of the day – the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup.

England boss Southgate says door is still open for absent Ben White

0

Gareth Southgate says the door to an England return for Ben White is still open and denied suggestions the Arsenal defender rejected a call-up for the forthcoming friendly double-header against Brazil and Belgium due to a fall-out with his assistant Steve Holland.

White has not played for England since leaving the squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to personal reasons.

Southgate had intended to recall him for the next two games but last week received a message from Arsenal stating the player did not wish to be considered.

The Three Lions boss said: “We had a call from [Arsenal’s sporting director] Edu last week saying Ben didn’t want to be considered for England squads at the moment.

“I spoke to him post-Qatar and there was reticence from his side. I don’t know why that is, but I respect that. I leave the door open because he’s a good player.”

There has been speculation White and Holland had a falling out in Qatar which has lingered, but Southgate made it clear that was not the case.

He added: “There is no issue between us at all and there’s also no issue with Steve Holland, which has been mentioned in articles and I don’t like that.

“I have to accept things are false about me, but I’m not prepared for that to happen to my coaching team. That is not the reason Ben is not with us.

“He’s not the first player who at certain times didn’t want to be available for selection.

“I’ve protected them because I’ve wanted the door to always be open for them. Sometimes I get the flack but people don’t know the reasons. He’s playing very well, but he’s not available for selection.”

Jarrad Branthwaite today received a maiden call-up to the squad, leaping ahead of White in the pecking order with the next squad that Southgate picks the one that will represent England at the European Championship this summer.

Despite his chances of appearing in Germany seemingly receding, Southgate insists White remains under consideration, adding: “I want that door wide open. He would be in this squad, but he’s not available to us.

“[But] clearly to come in for June now would be difficult because others have been in the squads and playing regularly.

“With situations like that, you have to assess those who have been on your journey the whole way through.”

England squad: Branthwaite and Gordon included but Phillips left out

0

Jarrad Branthwaite and Anthony Gordon today received maiden call-ups to the England squad but there was no place for Kalvin Phillips or Ben White.

Branthwaite has impressed at the heart of Everton’s defence with the Toffees boasting one of the meanest defences in the Premier League despite the club’s fight against relegation.

England boss Gareth Southgate said: “He’s played consistently well.

“We watched him as a back-up centre-half for the under-21s. If you said a year ago he would consistently play in the Premier League, I would have been surprised.

“Credit to [Everton manager] Sean Dyche. He’s in on merit. We’re looking forward to having a look at him.”

Newcastle United winger Gordon benefits from the absence of the injured Jack Grealish and will fight it out with Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden for a place on the left side of England’s three-man attack.

Arsenal defender White has asked not to be considered while Phillips has endured a miserable season, initially at Manchester City with his fortunes not improving following a January loan move to West Ham.

Southgate added: “I think he [Phillips] knows exactly what we think of him, a good version of him is an important player for us. We don’t have many players of that profile.

“Unfortunately, his form just hasn’t been good enough. I’ve spoken to him, he knows that. I said to him towards the end of last year, if he didn’t play at City, it was going to be a problem.”

Brentford striker Ivan Toney is recalled after serving an eight-month ban for breaching betting guidelines while there are also places for Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Aston Villa centre-half Ezri Konsa.

On Palmer, Southgate said: “You can see and have always been able to see the quality he has.

“You could see last year how outstanding a technical finisher he was.

“He’s shown great composure in some real pressure moments for his club. He’s adaptable – he can play two or three positions.

“He’s had an outstanding season and, again, is in on merit as everyone else is.”

It is the final squad Southgate will select before he has to pick 23 players to represent England at the European Championship in Germany this summer.

The Three Lions’ build-up sees them take on Brazil on March 23 and Belgium three days later with both games staged at Wembley.

Kevin De Bruyne injury update: Man City midfielder out of Belgium squad

0

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne will not feature in Belgium’s squad for friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and England this month because of a groin strain.

Red Devils coach Domenico Tedesco said playmaker De Bruyne had been playing with an issue “for the last few matches”, adding that he did not know whether there was a “connection” between his new injury and the hamstring surgery which forced the 32-year-old to miss five months of the season.

“We can’t take a risk now – and certainly not with Kevin,” said Tedesco. “It is better to give him time to recover well at City and then have him ready for the European Championship.”

De Bruyne did not appear to have a physical problem when he was substituted in the 69th minute of City’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Sunday, remonstrating with manager Pep Guardiola about the decision to replace him.

Belgium play in Dublin on March 23 and at Wembley on March 26, continuing their preparations for a Uefa Euro 2024 campaign which starts against Slovakia in Frankfurt on June 17.

“Yesterday I spoke to the doctor and Kevin and we decided the risk is too great,” added Tedesco.

“It is our responsibility to take into account the player but also the player’s club.”

Kevin De Bruyne latest news

City host Newcastle in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, two weeks before Premier League leaders Arsenal visit Etihad Stadium.

De Bruyne was directly involved in three goals in the first leg of City’s Champions League round 16 win over Copenhagen and contributed four assists and one goal in his first four Premier League matches following his comeback.

He set up John Stones’ early opener at Liverpool with a cleverly-taken corner for his only goal involvement in four top-flight games since then, although he assisted four goals in City’s 6-2 win at Luton Town in the FA Cup fourth round on February 27.

“It’s not a problem,” Guardiola told TNT Sports when he was asked about De Bruyne’s reaction to being substituted.

“We’re fine. He will have a chance in the next game to prove how wrong I was.”
