Australian Grand Prix: Sainz back for Ferrari after recovering from appendicitis

Carlos Sainz will return for this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix after the Ferrari driver missed the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix due to appendicitis.

Sainz participated in the first two practice sessions in Jeddah despite feeling unwell, before being diagnosed with appendicitis and forced to undergo surgery.

In the Spaniard’s absence, British teenager Oliver Bearman stepped up from Formula Two as a late replacement and won plaudits as he finished seventh on his Formula One debut.

Ferrari did not provide a timeframe for Sainz’s recovery, but on Wednesday the team included him on their official media schedule ahead of the Melbourne event.

The Scuderia subsequently confirmed Sainz – who will leave the team upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the season – will return to the car for the season’s third race.

Sainz finished third to Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez at the Bahrain Grand Prix before team-mate Charles Leclerc made the podium in Saudi Arabia.

Team principal Fred Vasseur is anticipating a strong showing in Australia, where the race gets under way at 5am UK time on Sunday.

“We expect to be frontrunners on this track, which could produce a similar pecking order to the one seen in Jeddah,” Vasseur said.

“We intend on adopting an aggressive approach with the aim of putting pressure on the team that’s won the first two races.”

UK sponsor licence for US workers: Application process and timescales

0

UK employers can obtain a sponsor licence to bring US workers to come and work for their businesses in the UK to boost their workforce. Before you are issued a sponsor licence you must meet some eligibility criteria.

You must also show the Home Office the workers you wish to bring to the UK and the various roles you intend to fill in your business. The type of job a US worker will do for your business will largely determine the type of sponsor licence you must apply for.

Why do UK employers need sponsor licence?

As a UK employer, if you obtain a sponsor licence, you will be allowed to sponsor foreign workers with the required skill set and experience for long-term or short-term work. Bringing US workers to come and work for your business in the UK will help boost the productivity of your business.

Sponsor licence eligibility criteria

You must meet the following eligibility criteria to obtain a sponsor licence that will authorise you to bring US workers to come and work for your business in the UK. You must:

  • Be original, trading, and operating in the UK legally.
  • Be based in the UK.
  • Have key personnel that are dependable and truthful.
  • Not pose a threat to immigration control.
  • Have sufficient HR systems that will ensure you carry out your licensed sponsor obligations seamlessly and continuously.

Application process for sponsor licence

As a UK employer, before your business applies for a sponsor licence, your Authorising Officer must be satisfied that all systems are in place to ensure that your business complies with its obligations and sponsorship duties. To apply for a sponsor licence, you need to access the online sponsor licence application form through the Sponsorship Management System (SMS).

In the online application form, you will be asked to state your contact information, the key personnel on the licence, the type of licence you want to obtain and other relevant details about your business. Ensure you save your progress from time to time while completing the online application form.

Once you’re done filling out your sponsor licence online application form, you must forward your submission alongside your supporting documents to the UK Home Office. If you want to submit physical copies of your documents, they must be original and officially certified copies. You must include the following documents in your submission:

  • Proof that your business is authentic and active.
  • Endorsement from a governing body.
  • Value Added Tax (VAT) registration certificate.
  • Evidence of your UK footprint.
  • Evidence that you’re registered with His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
  • Franchise agreement.
  • Hierarchy chart of your organisation.
  • Proof of your overseas training presence.
  • Financial report of a registered accountant.
  • Proof of ownership or lease of the building from which your business operates.

Note that the above-mentioned documents are not all-encompassing; they are just possible documents you may need to provide. Your type of business, situation and the kind of sponsor licence you want to obtain will determine whether you will provide some of these documents or present additional documents to support your application.

Once you’ve finished attaching all the required documents, you’ll be required to state your reason for seeking a sponsor licence from the Home Office, your business sector, and its operating hours. Below the application form, there’s an email address to which you will send your submission sheet alongside your documents. You need to submit the photos or digital scans of your documents preferably in JPEG, PNG and PDF format, also ensure that their short descriptive titles are readable.

What are the timescales of sponsor licence?

You should expect a decision on your sponsor licence application to be made within 8 weeks. However, you may experience delays in getting the licence processed if you do not provide all the required documents for the sponsor licence type you want to acquire.

For this reason, it’s best to engage a professional immigration lawyer to help you avoid situations that could lead to a delay. Additionally, to expedite the processing time of the sponsor licence, you can pay a priority fee of £500 to get a decision within 10 working days.

What are the fees for a sponsor licence?

Your UK business must be ready to satisfy some financial demands to successfully sponsor US workers to work for you in the UK. The cost of bringing US workers to join your workforce depends on the type and size of your business.

If you have a small business, you are expected to have a balance sheet and a turnover that are not worth more than £5.1 million and £10.2 million respectively. As a small business owner, you’re required to pay £536 as a sponsor licence fee. You will not pay any money to add a worker licence to a pre-existing temporary worker licence. However, if you’re a large business owner, the sponsor licence fee you must pay is £1,476.

Note that, you’ll be required to pay this same amount if your business does not meet the criteria or is exempted from the small business regime. If you want to add a worker to a pre-existing temporary worker licence, you must pay £940.

Alongside the above-mentioned fees, you’ll also pay:

  • £1,000 for immigration skills charge yearly or a lower rate of £364 for smaller charities or businesses.
  • £239 to assign a Certificate of Sponsorship or £25 for each temporary worker.
  • Other fees for the visa applications of your prospective workers.

Final thoughts

The process of obtaining a sponsor licence and bringing US workers to come and support your workforce in the UK is complex. Additionally, the hassle of meeting several eligibility criteria and providing an array of documents to support your sponsor licence application is typically overwhelming.

Keep in mind that the type of licence you need, and the kind and size of your organisation determine the documents you must provide and the corresponding fees you’d pay while applying. You’ll most likely miss out on crucial details while applying, which could cause your application to be delayed or in the worst-case scenario be refused.

This would require you to reapply, incur additional expenses and waste your time in the process. For this reason, it’s best to consult a professional immigration lawyer to help you navigate the sponsor licence application process seamlessly and avoid breaking UK immigration rules while bringing US workers to work for your business in the UK.

Partnership to empower SMEs and drive economic growth in the North

The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) has joined forces with Employment Hero – a global HR, payroll, and benefits platform – in a concerted effort to bolster SMEs and stimulate economic expansion in the North.

With a combined goal of empowering small businesses in the Greater Manchester area, GMCC, the largest accredited Chamber of Commerce in the UK with over 4,200 members, and Employment Hero, serving 20,000 SMEs and 200,000 employees in the UK, are pooling their resources.

Together, they aim to broaden their range of support services, including payroll management, HR, and recruitment, to fortify the local business landscape.

This strategic partnership underscores a mutual dedication to fostering economic prosperity and highlighting the ingenuity and resilience of Greater Manchester.

A recent report from GMCC highlighted a significant demand for customer-facing roles, such as in care and hospitality. Despite this demand, a staggering 65% of employers said that these positions are ‘hard to fill’. This challenge is particularly pronounced in the care sector, which advertised almost 15,000 vacancies last year alone.

The report also pays homage to the North’s historical role as an industrial powerhouse, with over 100,000 manufacturing jobs available in the Greater Manchester area.

These industries remain vital to our economy and require substantial support to thrive. Employment Hero’s platform is particularly beneficial for SMEs grappling with complex pay runs or shift scheduling.

Their talent matching tool, SmartMatch, harnesses the power of AI to match employers with pre-vetted candidates for every role within the business to ensure optimal staffing levels. By consolidating recruitment, onboarding, payroll, and HR processes into a centralised system, SMEs can significantly enhance team efficiency.

Reet Sercombe, head of membership & commercial at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said: “At the heart of our mission is empowering small businesses across the North, ensuring they have the resources and connections essential for success. Regardless of their industry or scale, every company grapples with HR challenges. Teaming up with Employment Hero bolsters our support system, providing SMEs in Greater Manchester with a robust platform to nurture and expand their teams.”

Kevin Fitzgerald, UK MD at Employment Hero, (pictured)  said: “No small business owner wants to spend their time completing admin tasks, but the reality is that dealing with HR issues like recruitment and payroll takes up a lot of time and headspace. SMEs are the real heroes of our economy, making up 99% of all businesses, giving jobs to 70% of the world’s workers, and contributing nearly half of global GDP. Imagine if they could put all their energy into growing their businesses instead of completing paperwork. I’m thrilled to partner with GMCC and believe that together we can boost the local economy and show the world what Greater Manchester has to offer.”

Two men arrested following cross-border police chase

0

Two men have been arrested following a cross-border police chase in Oldham.

Police received a call about a home burglary in Blackley on Monday night, where three vehicles were reported stolen.

Officers successfully used ANPR to identify a black BMW 1 series which they believed was stolen. In just 12 hours, the car had been fitted with false plates and was back on the roads, and flagged between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire.

GMP’s TVIU officers lay in wait, prepared to snare the vehicle as it travelled past them on Ripponden Road near the county border. Officers engaged in a short chase reaching speeds of 100mph, as the occupants attempt to evade capture.

A stinger was deployed, which successfully deflated all four tyres. The two occupants  abandoned the car and attempted to make off on foot across the moors but were arrested after a pursuit.

Two men (22 and 19) have been arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, possession of controlled drugs failing to stop for police.

A large quantity of cash and drugs were recovered from within the vehicle.

Both occupants are believed to be prolific burglars who have been wanted by police for a spate of burglaries across Greater Manchester.

Sergeant Paul Lockett said: “Our unit patrol the roads of Greater Manchester in marked and unmarked cars day and night, working with other teams across GMP to target those suspected of being involved in a wide range of crime with particular focus on burglary, robbery and vehicle crime.

“Across Greater Manchester, and beyond, officers proactively seek criminals and also act on intelligence from members of the public to drive down crime.

“We remain committed to doing everything in our power to crackdown on those who bring misery to our communities, helping to make Greater Manchester hostile for those intent on committing crime on our roads.”

Detective constable Warren Robinson said: “Ali subjected a woman to a degrading, humiliating experience and I am glad that he is behind bars where he belongs.

“His disgusting behaviour has no place in society and I would like to thank the victim for her bravery in this investigation.

Knowing your rights as a UK consumer

0

Online shopping and contactless payments have made spending on the go really easy. Not that it’s possible to make purchases at the click of a button or the swipe of your phone, understanding your rights as a UK consumer is essential.

Whether you’re shopping instore or online, you need to know how you’re protected in case things don’t go as you’d expect.

Your consumer rights

As a UK consumer, you have fundamental rights that safeguard your interests. One of the most important rights is the right to a refund, replacement, or repair for faulty goods. When you purchase a product, it should be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. If it falls short of these standards, you have the right to request a refund, replacement, or repair.

Understanding warranties, guarantees, and implied terms is also important.

  • A warranty is a promise made by the manufacturer or seller about the quality or performance of a product.
  • A guarantee is an additional commitment to fix defects within a specified period.
  • Implied terms are legal obligations that automatically apply to every contract for goods and services, ensuring that they meet minimum standards. For example, if you buy a new smartphone and it stops working within a reasonable timeframe, you can request a repair or replacement. If you book a hotel room online and it doesn’t match the description, you can seek a refund.

These rights are in place to protect consumers from being stuck with sub-par products or services.

However, while you can make a request for a refund, you don’t have an automatic right to one. If you bought the item in a shop, you would need to check the retailer’s policy.

If you bought it online, the rules are slightly different. For example, you have the right to cancel your order within 14 days, according to the Consumer Contracts Regulations. This is because when buying online, it’s reasonable to presume that some customers may receive goods that aren’t what you were expecting.

Addressing unfair treatment

When you feel you’ve suffered unfair treatment as a consumer, there are various avenues to explore. Start by making a complaint to the seller or service provider. They may offer a resolution, such as a refund or a replacement. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, you can turn to consumer protection agencies, such as Citizens Advice, which can provide guidance and help with disputes.

Additionally, ombudsman services are available for specific industries, such as energy, finance, and telecommunications. They act as independent bodies to investigate and resolve consumer complaints. In more complex cases, the small claims court can be an option for seeking compensation or resolving disputes.

Protections offered by credit cards

Credit cards can provide an extra layer of protection for consumers through section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This provision holds the credit card company jointly liable with the seller or service provider in case of a breach of contract or misrepresentation. This means that if you make a purchase between £100 and £30,000 with your credit card, and the product is faulty or the service isn’t as promised, you can potentially claim a refund from your credit card provider.

When to use a credit card

Using a credit card can be useful in various situations. For high-value purchases like electronics or appliances, the added protection of Section 75 could be a valuable safety net. According to Section 75, you can put your claim to the credit card company if you’re having difficulty getting your money back from the retailer. You can’t recover your losses from both, but this is a particularly useful protection if the business you bought from has ceased trading.

Similarly, when booking flights or accommodation for a holiday, credit cards offer protection if the company goes bankrupt or the services aren’t provided as agreed.

However, it’s essential to use credit cards responsibly. Avoid accumulating excessive debt and always make at least the minimum monthly payments. Understanding your credit card terms and conditions is vital to ensure you can enjoy the benefits without falling into financial trouble.

Being a well-informed consumer is the first step towards protecting your rights and interests when purchasing goods in the UK.

Manchester United: Bryan Robson tips Mainoo to excel with England

0

Former England captain Bryan Robson is confident Kobbie Mainoo will adapt swiftly to the demands of international football and would have “no qualms telling Gareth Southgate to pick him”.

Manchester United midfielder Mainoo was yesterday called into the senior squad having originally been named in the Under-21 party and could be in line to make his Three Lions debut in the forthcoming double-header against Brazil and Belgium.

The 18-year-old has made a huge impression at United this season and Robson, himself a former midfielder at Old Trafford, believes he will be able to make the step up.

Writing in a column in the Daily Mail, Robson said: “Kobbie Mainoo could start for England at the European Championship. He is that good and he is only going to get better.

“I’d have no qualms telling Gareth Southgate to pick him because, despite only being 18, Kobbie has shown nothing but maturity throughout his Manchester United career.

“On Sunday against Liverpool in the FA Cup, some of his movement, his quick feet, his composure… you had to admire him. He was terrific.

“I’d be cautious before saying the sky’s the limit because he can still make improvements, but the great thing with this kid is that he is willing to listen and learn.”

England face Brazil at Wembley on Saturday night before meeting Belgium three days later. After that, the focus will switch to this summer’s European Championship in Germany.

“There are few bigger tests than playing Brazil and Belgium but I believe he can adapt,” added Robson.

“International football is harder. I know you play against top players every week in the Premier League, but you notice as a player when you make the step up that everyone is better.

“It will be a great help to Kobbie to have the likes of Harry Maguire around him and maybe Luke Shaw down the line, but I see no reason why he can’t stake a claim to start in Germany in June.”

Sabalenka clash ‘uncomfortable’ for friend Badosa

Paula Badosa accepts it will be “uncomfortable” to play close friend Aryna Sabalenka at the Miami Open on Friday.

Sabalenka is mourning the loss of her boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov, who died on Monday after reportedly jumping off a hotel balcony in the Floridian city.

Badosa beat the returning Simona Halep in the first round yesterday and the draw has pitted her against world number two Sabalenka, who has not withdrawn from the event despite her loss.

Speaking after beating Halep, Badosa said: “I mean, I don’t want to talk about it. But of course, as I said before, she’s one of my best friends.

“Yesterday I spoke with her a lot of time. This morning the same. So I know what she’s going through. I know the entire situation, what is happening.

“That for me is a little bit shocking also to go through that because at the end she’s my best friend and I don’t want her to suffer. It’s a very tough situation.

“At the same point playing against her, it’s also uncomfortable. Yeah, but I don’t really want to talk about it because I said I’m not going to talk about it. She’s my best friend and I promised that. I’m going to stay like this. Sorry.”

Koltsov, who represented Belarus at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics and played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, died at the age of 42.

Having retired from playing in 2016, he was assistant coach for Russia Kontinental Hockey League team Salavat Yulaev Ufa.

A statement on their website said Koltsov “forever wrote himself into the history of our club” by helping them win the Russian Championship and the Gagarin Cup.

The Tennis Channel said in a broadcast on Tuesday that Sabalenka will start as scheduled in the second round this week but not carry out media duties during her campaign, according to multiple reports.

The Miami-Dade Police Department said Koltsov’s death was by “apparent suicide”, adding: “No foul play is suspected”.

Booming Self-Storage Sector in the UK Nears £1 Billion Revenue Amid Housing Crisis

0

The self-storage industry in the UK is on the verge of achieving an annual revenue milestone of £1 billion, as highlighted by recent data in The Guardian. This surge in the sector’s growth coincides with the escalating costs faced by many UK residents when considering moving or expanding their homes due to the ongoing housing crisis.

The significant expense associated with moving in the UK, averaging around £12,000, has made the option of self-storage an increasingly attractive alternative for cost savings.

Statistical Insights into Industry Growth

The year 2022 showcased the self-storage industry’s robustness and expansion, with a revenue boost of 6.5%, reaching £990 million.

The growing requirement for extra storage has led to both households and businesses across the UK utilising more than 2 million sq ft of storage space, signifying the vital role self-storage plays in the current societal setup.

The industry’s upward trajectory is expected to persist, with forecasts indicating the introduction of over 280 new storage facilities by 2026, translating to growth exceeding 10%.

Factors Fuelling the Industry’s Expansion

The burgeoning demand for self-storage is driven by several critical elements:

The prohibitive costs associated with housing and the scarcity of available residential space have compelled many to opt for alternative storage solutions.

The trend of more students living away from their homes has further fuelled the demand for student storage options.

Tips for a More Affordable Move

To assist individuals and businesses in navigating the complexities of moving and storage with financial efficiency, The Box Co. presents valuable tips in their guide ‘5 Tips for Moving House On A Budget’:

  • Declutter Before You Pack: Streamline your belongings and alleviate moving costs by parting with items you no longer require.
  • Compare Self-Storage Options: Diligently compare deals to find the perfect balance between location convenience and cost-effectiveness.
  • DIY Packing and Moving: Leverage the assistance of friends and relatives for packing and moving chores, bypassing the need for professional services.
  • Off-Peak Moving: Aim for quieter moving periods to benefit from reduced pricing.
  • Seek Out Free Packing Materials: Take advantage of free boxes and packing supplies available from various sources, alongside household items, to cut down on moving expenses.

Prospects for the UK’s Self-Storage Market

The continued expansion of the self-storage market not only caters to the immediate storage needs of the UK’s residents but also mirrors the broader housing crisis. With the sector poised to cross the £1 billion annual revenue threshold, the outlook for both consumers and self-storage service providers is increasingly optimistic.
