Australia comfortably beat dire England by 28 runs in first men’s T20 international

England were soundly beaten by Australia by 28 runs in their first T20 international.

Australia amassed a stunning 132-3, with Travis Head smashing 59 from 23 balls as he and opening partner Matthew Short put on 86 in the first six overs.

But a strong fightback from a youthful England side restricted Australia to 179 to give them hope ahead of the chase.

However their chase hit the rocks early on as three wickets went down in the powerplay.

Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran bolstered England’s chances with a 54-run stand but after they departed in quick succession, England were bowled out for 151.

The second game of the T20 series takes place in Cardiff on Friday.

Player of the Match Head said: “It was a nice start. Nice to get under way. England bowled well at the start and in the first few overs it was nice to get one away.

“To set a platform like that with the hitters we had behind us…it was nice to do the job.

“I just tried to acclimate to a pitch with a bit of pace in it. The pitches in Scotland were a lot different.

“For me it was about using the pace well which I think I did. Matthew Short got off to a cracking start in the first few overs and we matched well together. Nice to get that partnership going and starting the series well.”

Evans admits Murray a big miss after starting Davis Cup with win

Team GB star Dan Evans admits Andy Murray is a big miss from the team following his retirement.

Evans, who partnered the Scotsman at the recent Paris Olympics, won his opener for Great Britain against Finland, beating Eero Vasa 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 to make it 1-0 in the best-of-three Group D tie.

It wasn’t a vintage performance from the 34-year-old, but he did enough to get his nation off to the perfect start after Jack Draper was rested following his run to the semi-finals of the US Open.

Murray was absent for the first time other than injury following his final bow in Paris, and it has had an impact according to Evans.

Speaking after his match, he said: “It’s very different, on the court but also in practice.

It’s a big hole but we have a great team and to come through this group it’s not like we don’t have good players to fill his space.

“He’s a massive miss and we wish he was still playing but hopefully he’s watching on the TV.

“Difficult match, he played great at the start I knew he’d come out and play aggressive.

“This court helps that. I found it a little tough for quite a long time to get the ball striking there.

“He did a great job of rushing me. I started to play a bit better in the second and really well at the end.

“A big thank you to everyone for coming out, we really appreciate it.

“You’re a great crowd and it really makes the occasion, helps us so much.

“We love playing here and hopefully no more epics this week. Two sets to love and out of here.”

Following Evans’ win, Billy Harris followed up with a 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win over Otto Virtanen.

It marked a perfect start for Team GB as they embarked on their latest journey to win the Davis Cup.

Game-changing safety app goes live in Manchester

The WalkSafe app is now live for the public to download and use in Manchester.

This free-to-download app is an initiative aimed at helping people make safe journeys no matter the time of day.

It lets people pick known safe routes through the city, as well as allowing them to share their location with family or friends, as well as sending an automatic alert out if a person fails to reach their intended destination.

As Manchester expands and draws more people than ever to enjoy its cultural offering, night life and music scene, it is more important than ever that steps are in place so people can travel safely.

In recent years the tragic and avoidable murders of Sarah Everard, Sabina Nessa and dozens of other women have put a spotlight on what more can be done to address violence against women and girls, and how safety can be improved.

In response, Manchester City Council launched the Women’s Night-time Safety Charter in 2022, offering free training and guidance to venues across the city on how to support and promote safety.

To date, more than 400 venues have signed up to this charter, pledging to provide support and assistance to anyone at night who needs it, as well as undergoing additional training on how to be an active bystander, recognise potential spiking and improve safety across the sector.

With the arrival of WalkSafe to Manchester, the Council hopes that it will help and empower even more people to feel safe no matter who they are or where they are going, day or night and promote venues and businesses who are making women’s safety a priority.

WalkSafe is the brainchild of 34-year-old Emma Kay who, as a daughter of a Metropolitan Police officer, was subject to many rules to keep her and her siblings stay safe when out and about. Despite this, she experienced catcalling, following, groping and flashing – incidents which sadly occur too often to many women across the world.

As an adult, Emma volunteered at a community centre for people in crisis and saw first-hand the experiences women had, specifically their fear of the streets at night, confirming her fear that personal safety is an issue that affects everyone.

The WalkSafe app can now be downloaded for use.

Councillor Joanna Midgley, deputy leader of Manchester City Council said: “The arrival of WalkSafe to Manchester is a huge development and one which I believe with strengthen the work we are doing around safety. In an ideal world anyone should be able to go where they want, when they want but until then, it is important we put measures in place to protect and empower our residents.

“In the coming months, we will be working with partners across the city, as well as within our burgeoning night time and events sector, and our universities to make sure that anyone has the tools to keep themselves safe.”

Emma Kay, co-founder of WalkSafe, said:“Like us, Manchester City Council takes the safety of everyone in the city seriously and to partner with them on such an important initiative is an absolute privilege.

“WalkSafe is now live in Manchester and is free to download. It has unique features that means everyone can feel and be safer. From tracking your friends’ journeys to seeing the safe spaces on the map, it ensures everyone gets home from a night out. The app is ideal for students, commuters, runners and just about everyone. I always say it’s the app that shouldn’t have to exist but sadly it is an essential ally to let us all enjoy our lives and go where we want, when we want.”

DP World Tour: Irish Open – preview, odds, how to watch and prediction

Rory McIlroy will be the big draw when he tees it up in Northern Ireland for the first time in five years this week.

McIlroy headlines a field at the Irish Open that also includes the likes of Shane Lowry, Seamus Power, Robert McIntyre and Nicolai Hojgaard but none of the elite Americans, who have opted out of taking on the challenging links at Royal County Down.

Regularly voted the best course in the world, it is a lay-out that can destroy the best – as evidenced by McIlroy’s opening-round 80 when the DP World Tour last visited in 2015.

The Ulsterman is relishing the chance to return, however, and play in front of friends and family.

He told UTV: “To be home and stay in my own house and see my friends and all that – I’ve only been here for a day – but it’s been great.

“Obviously, really looking forward to the week. I love coming back and playing, even if it’s just with my mates, coming playing at RCD or playing Portrush, so to be able to play a tournament… I didn’t do so well last time so I’m trying to improve on that.

“I always appreciate the unbelievable support that I get from home and everyone around here. But I haven’t played as well as I want to when I come back and play these events at home. So hopefully, this year that can change.”

Who is the favourite?

bet365 have McIlroy as favourite, followed by Lowry and Aaron Rai. All odds correct as of 1pm on September 10.

Rory McIlroy 13/2

Shane Lowry 11/1

Aaron Rai 16/1

Robert McIntyre 18/1

Bernd Wiesberger 25/1

Nicolai Hojgaard 25/1

Thriston Lawrence 28/1

Ryan Fox 30/1

Thomas Detry 30/1

Seamus Power 33/1

How to Watch

You can catch all the action on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Golf.

The coverage starts on Thursday at 1pm UK BST and continues throughout the weekend.

Prediction

While predicting the winner of events on the PGA TOUR is relatively straightforward – you just plump for Scottie Scheffler – the DP World Tour is a different animal.

Add in the fact it’s a links course and wind is forecast and it becomes something of a lottery.

With balls being blown off course and unpredictable lies, the ability to scramble becomes all the more important.

With that in mind, McIntyre may be a good shout. The lefty ranks 15th in the scrambling category on the PGA TOUR and has plenty of experience on links courses given his Scottish heritage.

Ryan Fox is another to watch, as is Power.

The real winner, however, is likely to be the TV viewer, who can sit back, relax, take in the scenery and watch some of the world’s best take on one of the hardest tests in the game.

Thug who strangled detective is jailed

0

A teenager who robbed a young boy of his coat and bag in Bury, has been jailed for three years.

Muhammad Zakir Arif (18) of Harrington Close, Bury, appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Monday.

He admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, strangulation or suffocation, two counts of possession of a bladed article in a public place, and two counts of failure to comply with a Section 49 Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act notice.

The three-year sentence also included two counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, which Arif had been found guilty of during a previous trial which took place in November 2023.

In January 2023, Arif approached a young boy in Cornwall Drive, Bury, and produced a ‘zombie style knife’ before forcing the victim to hand over his bag and jacket. The attack was recorded on video and later circulated on social media.

This followed a similar robbery committed by Arif earlier that same month.

In February 2024, whilst on court bail awaiting sentencing for the robbery offences, Arif was travelling in a taxi in Hulme when the car was stopped, and he was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences. In his possession at the time of his arrest was a machete, a large zombie knife and two mobile phones.

Having refused to provide the passcodes for the two mobile phones, Arif was served with a Section 49 RIPA Court Order, which compels a suspect to provide access to their electronic devices or face prosecution. The application for the order had been granted in the interests of national security but he still refused to provide access.

Whilst in custody, Arif was questioned by detectives several times and, on one occasion, he leapt forward at the interviewer before launching a brutal attack. After punching the detective in the head numerous times, he then proceeded to violently strangle the officer before he could be restrained.

Detective superintendent Andy Meeks, head of investigations for Counter Terrorism Policing North West, said: “Today’s sentencing is the culmination of months of dedicated work by the investigation team to ensure Muhammad Zakir Arif faced the consequences of his actions.

“Machetes and zombie knives have no place on our streets so we’re pleased that two dangerous weapons have been seized and will be destroyed. However, his offending didn’t stop after his arrest and he would go on to repeatedly flout a legal order, refuse to answer questions, and violently attack somebody as they tried to do their job.

“Thankfully the detective has fully recovered and returned to work, having been closely supported by colleagues across the team.

“We welcome the sentence imposed by the judge today.”

Adrian Newey: Aston Martin F1 title is ‘goal’ as design boss announces move

Adrian Newey believes Aston Martin F1 have “all the key pieces of infrastructure” to win the Formula One world championship after the team confirmed the revered designer will join them from March 2025.

The 65-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation his announcement in May that he was leaving Red Bull after 19 years, masterminding seven F1 drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles during his tenure.

Newey said he had been “hugely inspired and impressed” by the “passion and commitment” of Aston Martin’s owner, Lawrence Stroll.

Newey: Aston Martin ‘great environment’

“Lawrence is determined to create a world-beating team,” he explained. “He is the only majority team owner who is actively engaged in the sport.

“His commitment is demonstrated in the development of the new AMR Technology Campus and wind tunnel at Silverstone, which are not only state-of-the-art but have a layout that creates a great environment to work in.

“Together with great partners like Honda and Aramco, they have all the key pieces of infrastructure needed to make Aston Martin a world championship-winning team and I am very much looking forward to helping reach that goal.”

Aston Martin have given Newey a five-year contract worth up to a possible £30m a year, according to BBC Sport.

He will work with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who is under contract until the end of 2026, and team-mate Lance, who is Stroll’s son.

Stroll: Newey ‘the best’

“As soon as Adrian became available, we knew we had to make it happen,” said Canadian billionaire Stroll.

“This is huge news. Adrian is the best in the world at what he does – he is at the top of his game – and I am incredibly proud that he is joining [us].

“It’s the biggest story since the Aston Martin name returned to the sport and another demonstration of our ambition to build a Formula One team capable of fighting for world championships.

“Our initial conversations confirmed that there was a shared desire to collaborate in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“We mean business – and so does he. Adrian shares our hunger and ambition, he believes in this project and he will help us write the next chapter in Aston Martin Aramco’s Formula One story.”

Is this marketing’s most desirable role?

A recruitment specialist has claimed marketers applying for entry level or middle management roles are looking for more than the perfect job, they want the perfect location – and it’s NOT London.

The comments were made after Cumbrian family business Bells of Lazonby launched its a job search to find an assistant brand manager to join its marketing team.

The role, based in Penrith on the edge of the Lakeland hills, will involve working across one of the UK’s leading free-from sweet bakery brands ‘We Love Cake’ which is available in supermarkets and food service outlets across the UK and Australia.

Sophie O’Brian, founder of Pollen Careers, states 10 to 15 years ago junior marketers were centring themselves in the capital city – with a belief system that tiresome work ethic, presenteeism and a life in the big smoke was the only way to get ahead. Knock on 2024, Gen Z want work life balance, a desk with a view and a role that fits into their lifestyle not the other way round.

Last month, Bells of Lazonby, a third-generation family bakery working across wholesale and retail, launched its job opening on LinkedIn and within days saw a surge of young talent hoping to land job in an idyllic setting.

Sat on the edge of the Lake District, Lazonby makes for one of the most beautiful commutes in the country (for anyone working across the county). With the flexibility of working from home and in the office, the role promises the ultimate office with a view every day and the ability to down tools and head into nature when the day is wrapped.

But why would a young-in-their-career marketer look to work in a sleepy Cumbrian town? It’s the death of the millennial ‘beanbag office’ gimmick. Today, recruitment specialist Sophie O’Brien says, people in their early careers want to prioritise their working mental health.

She said: “We see a big change from millennial jobseekers who coveted big city jobs for the bustling lifestyle and big-name employers on their CVs. Today many junior job seekers or middle managers are more open to rural roles because of the flexibility and a healthier lifestyle.

“Finding a role can be incredibly competitive, but family businesses can offer a different culture to big corporations. The biggest barrier, often, is that so many jobseekers are unaware that such positions exist.

“Ultimately, Gen Zs aren’t necessarily looking to climb the corporate ladder as fast as they can at global corporations like previous generations were, they want jobs that respect their lifestyle, offer a sustainable pace of work and a job they can truly enjoy. Smaller companies in rural locations can offer the chance for people to really grow.”

The role on offer

The assistant brand manager role, which is still open to applicants, will be responsible for developing and implanting strategic brand plans for We Love Cake. They are looking for someone with a background in sales or marketing, with a business or marketing degree being marked as desirable but not essential.

As well as its Cumbrian splendour, the role offers 33 days annual leave, access to an Employee Assistance Programme through Health Assured, cycle to Work Scheme (what a place to ride!), gym membership… and most importantly discounted cakes.

Head of marketing, Josh Boydell-Smith for Bells of Lazonby, who relocated from Manchester six years ago to take on his current role, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for the right person to really make a difference to a growing portfolio of products. We are a small team, so anyone taking on the role has the chance have real autonomy of their ideas and the chance to learn on the job.

“We are looking for the right fit, someone who is passionate about bakery – a person who is ready to embrace the magic of working on a disruptive brand that reaches far further than the Lake District.’

We Love Cake has seen rapid growth in recent years growing over 280% since 2020 in value and volume. Operating in UK Frozen Foodservice, Australian and UK retail, it is on track with its mission to become the biggest brand in value sales in Free From Sweet Bakery in the UK having achieved this already in Australia.

Initially launched in 2012 in UK foodservice, the brand became a success due to its quality, taste credentials and allergen integrity. Having been a disruptor to UK retail in 2019, We Love Cake was selling under 1,000 packs per week, by the end of 2023 it sold over 25,000 packs in UK retail in one week.

If you are interested in the role or recruitment opportunities you can apply by sending your CV to: [email protected] quoting assistant brand manager.

Essential Services you Need for Smooth Removals in the City

0

So, you’re relocating to the big city – or maybe you already live there but have a move planned to a new area – either way, moving amongst the hustle and bustle is no small feat. In fact, a city move can be one of the more stressful things you do, as it involves a lot of planning, coordination, and administration (along with packing and actual moving).  To set your next move in the city up for success, you need to get ahead of the process, book the right people, and set the right time to handle the hassle for you. That’s why in this guide, you’ll find a detailed overview of all the services you could require when transitioning from A to B, making your house move as seamless and stress-free as possible.

Professional Movers

Whether you need north or south London removals, opt for a company that can offer extensive and trustworthy city experience. All moves require different things, depending on where they are. Moving companies who specialise in city moves are aware of the challenges faced, restrictions they may need to overcome and how to navigate busy roads, times and areas. You should also opt for a professional moving firm that provides secure packing services. This not only saves you time running all over your current house boxing and bubble wrapping – but it also provides peace of mind that all of your belongings, fragile or not – are safe, secure and transported in the best hands. Finally, when it comes to moving with a removal company, consider the one that offers insurance on your valuables; this offers security in case of accidental damage in unforeseen circumstances.

Supplies & Equipment

Quality packing materials, including strong-hold tape, boxes, tools, sack trucks, labels, protective sheets and more. The list is endless. So you must find a reliable supplier. Not only that, having equipment of such high quality will make your move that little bit less stressful, knowing your items are better protected in transit and from any accidents that may occur. Many moving services online provide you with the best speciality boxes to suit your various needs, be that for clothing, valuable artwork and ornaments or technology. It’s also important to note that you can rent larger pieces of equipment, like your straps and sack trucks, by the hour or day to avoid huge upfront expenses. This is especially useful if you do not plan to move again in the near future, as these pieces of equipment are really only useful when moving.

Storage Solutions

For some people, there may be a period of time between moving out and moving in dates; therefore, short-term storage facilities are required to keep furniture and boxes safe while you stay with friends and family or at a hotel. If your new home isn’t yet ready due to renovations, or you are downsizing and require storage in the long term, these are available, too. You can find many storage facilities around London with security and 24/7 access for peace of mind that ensures valuables, be they technology, antiques or personal items, are safe from theft and damage. These storage providers are also often temperature-controlled to avoid issues like damp and humidity damaging items. While these companies tend to be reliable, it’s always sensible to gain insurance for the duration of the stay; in fact, many reputable storage companies enforce this.

Cleaning Services

All moves, be that rentals or ownership, require a clean, both of the property you move out of and, most likely, the one you move into. Hiring a cleaning service to prepare your new home and ensuring it is ready for your belongings to be moved into will save you the hassle and time of doing so yourself. For those moving out of a rental property, in order to receive your deposit back, a deep clean may be required of you; therefore, hiring a professional team to do so will ensure it is of the standards that your landlord desires.

Utility & Bills

You will need to be in frequent communication with a number of utility services during this time, be that for switching your water, gas and electric suppliers, setting up your new council tax bills and changing the address across all relevant parties (banks, driving licences, subscriptions, etc.). You will also most definitely want internet in your new home, so getting prepared and booking your internet installation date around the time you move allows you to get back to working, watching and browsing in no time.

Other Services To Consider

  • Vehicle & Transportation
  • Building repairs
  • Furniture assembly
  • Banking
  • Pet sitters
  • Decorators

In conclusion, there is a lot of planning, consideration, and support needed when moving house, especially in or around London. With the right services, professionals, and mindset, you can get from A to B in a safe, reliable, and seamless manner. Using experienced movers, cleaners, transport, and handyman services not only saves time and effort when moving but also allows you to settle into your new home with peace of mind.

Get prepared for your next move, and book the services you require today. Don’t let the opportunity for a streamlined and successful city move pass you by.
