Manchester United should be rubbing their hands together at the drama unfolding across the Premier League
When you hear ‘Manchester’ and ‘managerial drama’ in the same sentence, you would automatically assume that Manchester United were putting their fans through the wringer again. However, it is Manchester City who find themselves staring at an uncertain future as Pep Guardiola gets set to call time on his decade at the Etihad Stadium.
United supporters will not be disappointed to see the back of Guardiola, albeit beating him in his last Manchester derby will be a source of pride for the Reds. The Catalonian has created a footballing powerhouse at City and their success has often been at the expense of United.
Guardiola’s exit also paves the way for a Premier League power struggle. City would ordinarily be the favourites to challenge Arsenal for the title next season but there are question marks as to what a post-Guardiola landscape looks like for them.

Enzo Maresca is the favourite to replace Guardiola and while he comes from the Pep school of coaches, there’s no guarantee he will continue City’s success. Meanwhile, Liverpool are in turmoil as they look set to keep Arne Slot.
If they start the season gingerly, Anfield could turn toxic for the Dutchman. Chelsea have appointed the man Liverpool fans would love to replace Slot – Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard will have to oversee a major overhaul of his squad.
Chelsea look set for a season in transition next term rather than threatening a title challenge. Arsenal will be the ones to beat but Liverpool this year have shown how difficult it can be to go again.
Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson managed to retain titles but Arsenal have spent a huge amount of energy, physical and mental, on getting over the line this term. It could take a toll.
If you are in the United boardroom, you should be looking at this as a huge opportunity. Michael Carrick is expected to be hired as the new permanent head coach and that should provide United with more stability than any of their title rivals, barring Arsenal.
Apart from the Gunners, United are the team ending this season the happiest and that momentum should spill into the 2026/27 campaign. Of course, good vibes alone won’t make United serious title contenders.
The Reds will have at least eight extra matches next season and they need to bulk out their squad if they are to sustain a challenge at the top of the Premier League, as well as in Europe. Truthfully, United may never have a better chance to deliver their first Premier League title since Ferguson.
Had Carrick’s revival started sooner, who knows how close United would have come to pushing for the title this season. Now it is up to the Reds to use this summer wisely so they are primed to challenge the country’s best.
