Manchester Libraries twin with Ukraine Library

Manchester Libraries has been twinned with a Ukrainian library through a partnership programme set up to bring closer links with libraries in Ukraine.

Libraries Connected, the organisation of all public libraries in the UK, has overseen the development of a library twinning partnership with Library County, the Ukrainian library association.

The announcement has seen Manchester Libraries, twinned with the Lviv Regional Youth Library. It is one of several UK libraries twinned with a counterpart in Ukraine.

Being twinned with a Youth Library is particularly apt because of Moss Side Powerhouse Youth Library, a library specialising in offering a service to young people. Lviv, like Manchester is a UNESCO City of Literature.

Since the war broke out, libraries in Ukraine have had to adapt to changing conditions with a focus on supporting their communities’ mental health, countering misinformation, and providing practical help.

The twinning programme aims to promote information exchange about language, literature, and culture, to develop joint initiatives, connect audiences through exchange of experience, books and digital material as well as celebrating both UK and Ukrainian literature and culture.

Councillor John Hacking, said: “Libraries whether here or in Ukraine sit at the heart of and are the bedrock of communities and are an important resource for our young people, we hope to support Lviv Youth Library and the library staff in whatever way we can.”

Manchester Libraries is a Library of Sanctuary having been re-awarded Libraries of Sanctuary Status for another three years, earlier this year. It recognises and celebrates libraries that go above and beyond to welcome sanctuary seekers and refugees, demonstrating solidarity and inclusivity and the benefits of a welcoming culture to everyone.

TPE staff volunteer with women’s employment charity in Manchester

A dozen volunteers from train operator TransPennine Express (TPE) spent the day lending a hand at a women’s employment charity in Manchester.
Smart Works Greater Manchester is a charity that provides free clothing and interview coaching to unemployed women in advance of their interview.

On the news that they have been successful at interview, they will be invited back to receive additional items of clothing, all free and to keep, to build up a capsule wardrobe.

The TPE team helped tidy wardrobes, sort stock and steamed items ready for clients to wear at the charity’s Manchester centre.

Harriet Harbridge, diversity & inclusion manager at TransPennine Express, said: “We want to give back to the communities we serve, and this was an opportunity for us to do that.

And as part of an industry that is traditionally male dominated, we want to be able to inspire and empower women, no matter their circumstances.”

Another staff volunteering day is planned with Smart Works later in the year.

TPE was also recently among rail operators teaming up to support women after they have had career breaks – or just want to try something new.

Through a partnership with Women in Rail, ‘Never Mind the Gap’ provides training and work placements for women who want to ‘change track’ after a period away from the workplace.

Due to maternity, women take more career breaks than men do, and this is one of the main drivers of the persistent gender pay gap.

Over a two-week stint TPE and Northern, as well as Network Rail, and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) provided free training to show women how rewarding working in rail can be

Arrests made following investigation into unlawful sales of puppies in Greater Manchester

0

Police executed five warrants yesterday to tackle the unlawful sales of puppies across Greater Manchester.

Three men aged between 23 – 31, and a 43-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and fraud by false representation.

This followed an extensive investigation by the RSPCA and Greater Manchester Police, into the illegitimate and organised sale of puppies.

They uncovered an illicit underground trade that promotes animal cruelty and neglect, with sellers and criminal gangs making vast sums of money.

Some puppies were sick and died shortly after being sold to unsuspecting members of the public who believed they were buying much-loved family pets but may have been imported from overseas.

Sergeant Brendan Walsh from Rochdale district, said: “This is organised crime, and those involved have been making eye watering profits from this harmful and illicit trade.

“This has been a tremendous joint effort between Greater Manchester Police and the RSPCA’s Special Operations Unit. The properties have been searched, and police have rescued 14 puppies and seized an XL bully. Police also seized several mobile phones, important documents and bank statements, all consistent with an organised criminal operation involving the fraudulent and unlawful sale and breeding of puppies.

“We’ve had members of the public who have paid substantial amounts for these puppies, paid large veterinary fees, and have been left traumatised by their experiences. I hope our activity will highlight our commitment to tackling this type of crime, and I would urge anyone who feels they have been affected by this, please contact us so that we can act.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “We’d urge anyone who wants to get a dog to consider adopting from a rescue charity, like the RSPCA. There are thousands of dogs across the country waiting to find their forever families.

“Anyone who is looking to buy a puppy should be cautious when choosing a breeder and use The Puppy Contract to help them find a happy, healthy dog. Anyone who is concerned about a seller should walk away and report their concerns to the police, Trading Standards or RSPCA.”

Anyone with concerns over illegal puppy sales should contact Greater Manchester Police using the online reporting method or calling 101. Concerns can also be reported to the RSPCA.

What does leverage mean in Forex trading?

One of the most effective instruments traders have to increase their possible returns in Forex trading is leverage. It lets traders manage more sizable positions with rather meager capital. Although leverage can boost profits, it can also cause losses. So, traders must know the suitable degrees of leverage for their particular trading plans.

Leverage is basically borrowed capital offered by a broker to enable traders to raise their position size above what their own capital would allow.

Leverage in Forex trading is stated as a ratio, say 50:1, 100:1, or perhaps 500:1. With a 100:1 leverage ratio, one can control a stake valued at $100 for every $1 invested.

Leverage’s primary benefit is that it lets traders expose more to the market without having to commit significant funds. But it also raises the danger as trades against the trader cause a speedy accumulation of losses.

The mechanism of leverage in Forex trading

Leverage in Forex trading helps traders to occupy bigger positions than their initial outlay. Using a 100:1 leverage, for instance, you can handle a position at $100,000 from $1,000 in your trading account. If the market turns to your advantage, this will significantly raise your possible profit margin.

Leverage, though, increases not only gains but also losses. For a $100,000 stake, a 1% negative movement in the market might cause a loss of $1,000, hence your whole account balance could be destroyed.

Considerations for selecting leverage

Several elements affect the appropriate leverage ratio for your Forex trading approach: trading style, risk tolerance, and trading account size. These elements should help you to think:

  1. Higher risk tolerance traders may choose more leverage since they are at ease with the possibility of more losses. To reduce risk, conservative traders should rather use less leverage.
  2. Method of trading. Since they hold positions for little periods and want to profit from little price swings, day traders and scalpers may employ more leverage. Targeting greater price fluctuations and holding trades for longer, swing traders or position traders may choose reduced leverage.
  3. Larger account balances usually call for less utilization since the amount at risk is already somewhat large. Smaller account traders may choose more leverage to boost their possible gains, but this also carries more risk.

Best leverage for various trading strategies

The trading approach affects the ideal leverage ratio. For those wondering which leverage is best in Forex, the answer depends on the strategy being used. Let’s review some of the most often used Forex trading techniques together with their suggested leverage levels.

Scalping and day trading

Seeking to profit from little price swings, day traders and scalpers make several trades over the day. Their trades are temporary, hence they might utilize more leverage to maximize their gains on little price movements.

  • Recommended leverage: 100:1 to 200:1
  • Why is it? High leverage lets traders profit from fast market swings without tying off a lot of money. To control risk, nevertheless, you must establish strict stop-loss limits.

Swing trading

Targeting bigger price moves, swing traders occupy positions for multiple days or weeks. Because trades span a longer time, market volatility becomes more likely, and utilizing too much leverage might be negative.

  • Leverage advised: 20:1 to 50:1.
  • Lower leverage is better for swing trading since it offers protection against market volatility. Targeting bigger gains, traders can afford to hang positions through little price swings.

Position trading

Position traders trade for long stretches—weeks to months or perhaps years. Usually emphasizing long-term trends, these traders seek significant price adjustments. Usually, this kind of approach does not call for high leverage.

  • Recommended leverage: 5:1 to 10:1
  • Long-term trading by position traders causes notable price movements in the market. Reduced leverage guarantees traders can weather these swings without being driven from their positions.

Advantages of applying appropriate leverage

By offering several important advantages, the appropriate use of leverage can improve your trading approach.

  • Leverage helps traders to expose more markets, therefore maybe producing more profits from little price swings.
  • Leverage allows traders to keep more significant positions without having to commit big upfront funds. This releases money for different transactions or investments.
  • Leverage used properly helps traders control their risk more precisely. Traders can reduce their downside and yet seize market possibilities by applying reasonable leverage and establishing stop-loss orders.

Excessive leverage’s risks

Although leverage has many advantages, applying too much of it may expose major risks. Like leverage can increase profits, it can also magnify losses.

Here are some of the main hazards related to high leverage: A leveraged trading account can rapidly run empty with a little negative price movement. Should a trader’s account drop below a designated margin, the broker may call margin calls, meaning the trader must either cancel positions or make extra fund deposits to offset possible losses.

Particularly in times of market volatility, high leverage can cause emotional stress and impulsive behaviour related to decision-making. Bad trading decisions and large losses might follow from this.

Although it’s a great instrument in Forex trading that will increase your profitability, leverage needs careful application. Your particular risk tolerance, trading style, and account size will determine the appropriate leverage ratio for any trading plan. Higher leverage runs the danger of large losses even if it may result in more gains.

Leverage is a two-edged blade, the secret to success is to strike the proper balance fit for your risk tolerance and trading objectives. Start with modest leverage, emphasize controlled risk management, and change your approach as you grow more experienced.

Pakistan batter Ghulam stars with a century but England happy with day’s work

Debutant Kamran Ghulam hit a century for Pakistan on day one of the second Test to frustrate England’s wholehearted endeavour.

The home side came into the contest reeling from losing the first Test by an innings last week despite making 556 in their first knock, a result which prompted star trio Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afraid and Naseem Shah to be rested for the rest of the series.

Ghulam was Babar’s replacement and he impressed immediately with a superb 118 after England, and specifically Jack Leach, had made early inroads.

Pakistan ended the day on 259 for five – one of the rare occasions when both sides will be happy with their day’s work.

England’s all-Durham pace attack of Matthew Potts, Brydon Carse and captain Ben Stokes toiled diligently but it was Leach who looked the most threatening on the same Multan pitch that was used last week.

And although it appears to have lost its bounce, the surface did appear more conducive to spin.

Leach snared Abdullah Shafique and captain Shan Masood – the former with a beauty that rattled the batter’s off-stump – to leave Pakistan in trouble on 19 for two.

Ghulam and opener Saim Ayub led the fightback with a brilliant third-wicket partnership of 149 that played the hosts back into the game.

Despite the hot and sticky conditions, England continued to persevere with their seamers managing to engineer some reverse swing that was to prove useful.

Potts, as ever, ran in hard and got his reward when Ayub, having made his third half-century in four Test innings, pushed one straight to Stokes at silly mid-off for a well-made 77.

Saud Shakeel went shortly after the tea break, Carse producing a rare delivery that flared off the pitch and Jamie Smith took a smart catch behind the wicket.

Ghulam had kept plugging away at the other end and brought up his century with a hoik through the leg-side off part-timer Joe Root. It was a nice moment for the 29-year-old who celebrated with gusto.

He continued to play positively even as the day edged towards the close but it was to prove his undoing as, with a little more than five overs to go, he attempted to come down the pitch to Shoaib Bashir but missed the ball and turned to see it crash into the stumps.

Two companies fined total of £150,000 for sending spam texts

0

Two Manchester financial and debt management companies have been fined a total of £150,000 for sending more than 7.5 million spam texts.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined both Quick Tax Claims Limited, a company focusing on PPI tax refunds; and National Debt Advice Limited, a debt counselling advice service.

Both businesses came to the attention of the ICO in May 2023, when a number of complaints were sent to the 7726 spam message reporting service.

A wider investigation revealed that Quick Tax Claims Limited had sent 7,863,547 unlawful text messages over the course of a month, resulting in 66,793 complaints – 93% of these stating there was no ‘opt out’ option.

During the investigation, the ICO found that the company had purchased personal information from third-party suppliers that did not obtain valid consent. This led to the ICO issuing Quick Tax Claims Limited with a £120,000 fine.

Similarly, the ICO’s investigation found that over a four-month period, National Debt Advice Limited had sent 129,902 spam text messages resulting in 4,033 complaints.

It transpired during the ICO’s investigation, which lasted several months due to poor cooperation from National Debt Advice Limited, that they’d also purchased personal information from third-party suppliers, including loan decline data – which meant that the text messages were sent to people who had previously been turned down for loans. They also failed to conduct appropriate consent checks, eventually resulting in the ICO fining them £30,000.

Andy Curry, ICO head of investigations, said: “Both of these companies bombarded people with spam messages, often preying on those who might be experiencing difficult financial circumstances. To then be hounded by numerous unwarranted text messages, just adds further stress to people in those situations.

“It is so important, in these types of circumstances, that companies gain consent to send direct messages. Relying on third-party claims of consent, without undertaking the most basic of checks, is far from responsible conduct by these companies, and that’s why we took action.”

Ben Stokes has no issue with Pakistan pitch

England captain Ben Stokes says he has no issues with Pakistan’s use of home advantage for this week’s second Test, after the hosts packed their side with spinners on a used pitch in Multan.

Stokes missed England’s incredible win last week but is fit to play on Tuesday as the second Test begins on exactly the same surface.

Re-using a pitch that hosted more than 350 overs in the past few days is a highly unusual, but entirely legal, move and one that Stokes has no problem with.

“It’s the first time ever I’ve played on a used wicket in a Test series. It could be a tactic,” he said.

“But I think if we went 1-0 down at home, we would probably be going to our groundsman at the second Test saying, ‘can we have a bit more of this and a bit more of that’ to use home advantage in our favour.

“We could sit here and say ‘it’s going to do this, it’s going to do that’ but who knows? A used pitch brings a lot more into the game for both teams, actually. If it does spin more, if it does reverse more, there’s more options there for both teams.”

Stokes, who will bowl as an all-rounder, is one of two changes for England, Matthew Potts also coming in for Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson.

Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir, who turned 21 between Tests, will be expected to do the bulk of the bowling but Stokes insists his rehabilitation period has left him stronger than ever.

“I’d written a few teams down with me not bowling and it just didn’t work,” he admitted.

“It’s obviously got to be sensible but I’m playing as a third seamer. I’m available to bowl and when I sense the time is right for me to maybe come on and make an impact, there won’t be any doubts in my mind that I can come on and bowl.

“I’ve had a fair few injuries, it’s part of what we do, part of how I play cricket but I like to keep a positive mindset.

“Not only do I have a goal of getting my body back into a state of being able to play but I also have an individual goal of making sure I’m physically fitter than when I got injured. I’ve put myself through a fitness test over the last couple of days and come through that pretty well.”

Rochdale man jailed for possession of guns and drugs

0

A man has been sentenced to ten years behind bars after pleading guilty to 13 counts including possession of guns, ammunition, possession of drugs, being concerned in drug supply and drug manufacture.

Zak Dearden (35) of The Pen, Dyehouse Lane, was sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

In July 2023, Greater Manchester Police went to Dearden’s home –  a large plot of land with several containers, buildings and outbuildings – in connection with drugs offences but later received intelligence that he had guns at his house.

Over four weeks, 50 officers searched the buildings and seized drugs, firearms and chemicals believed to be used in the manufacture and production of drugs.

A total of five firearms with ammunition and drugs including 10kg of amphetamines with a street value of £100,000, 99g of cannabis oil with a street value of £12,884, £57,000 worth of cannabis and £4,685 worth of cocaine were recovered from the property site.

Dearden (pictured) pleaded to 13 counts including being concerned in the production of amphetamines, possession with intent to supply amphetamines, the production of cannabis oil, possession of cocaine with intent to supply, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, possession of a prohibited smooth-bore gun, converting an imitation firearm into a firearm, three counts of possessing firearm when prohibited and three counts of possessing ammunition when prohibited.

Exotic birds

Dearden also ran a pet shop with his father selling exotic birds. During the four-week search period of The Pen, officers found several hundred different animals including dogs, peacocks, parrots, mink, ferrets, ducks, Koi Carp and a bull.

At one count there were over 800 parrots in separate outbuildings. During each search where there were parrots in the aviary they had to be removed by an expert. They were left in the care of Dearden’s father after the search.

Challenging

Detective sergeant Steven Gilliland said: “This was a very challenging search and case. It took a month to fully search the site – it was the biggest search I have ever been involved in.

“I would like to thank our officers and partners who helped assist with this investigation – the hazardous chemicals that Dearden was using to produce the drugs had to be disposed of by chemical disposal experts.

“Words do not do justice to the scale of the land as well as the amount of buildings and state of the buildings which impacted on the search. Our investigation managed to uncover vast amounts of dangerous, drugs, weapons and various animals living in terrible conditions.

“For example, we found 10 dogs living in what can only be described as their own filth. Concerns were raised and the RSPCA attended. All the dogs were removed from the kennels and found alternative accommodation. I must thank the Dogs Trust at Denton for taking in two of the dogs and Leigh Dogs and Cats Home for taking in three.

“This operation has resulted in us removing threatening materials from getting onto the streets of Greater Manchester and today’s sentence puts a dangerous offender behind bars.”
