TfGM campaign to highlight the dangers of mindless driving launched by Manchester agency

With the help of creative agency for the curious, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has launched a video-led campaign which aims to highlight common driving distractions and how they may affect safety.

The series of four short videos shows common place scenarios juxtaposed against driving scenes to reinforce the dangers of people losing concentration at a critical time. These include a dentist eating mid appointment and a barber daydreaming whilst cutting hair.

“We’re delighted to have delivered this work for such a household name within Greater Manchester, especially on a topic as important as road safety, “ says Zoe Tatton, Director of for the curious.

“This campaign is an important milestone in further developing our video and photography offering at for the curious” explains Head of Videography & Photography, Luke Barnett.

Peter Boulton, TfGM’s Head of Highways, said: “It doesn’t take much to become distracted when you’re driving, and one mindless moment can have potentially disastrous consequences, including serious injury or death. for the curious have truly represented this messaging in these hard-hitting short films and digital out of home creative, they’ve shown genuine excitement for the project and have delivered high quality outputs that meet our objective.”

100 Embankment, located in Salford boasts a stunning rooftop terrace amongst other enviable features and is a joint partnership between Ask Real Estate, Tristan Capital Partners and Salford City Council.

Its strong sustainability credentials, contemporary design, matched with its prime location have helped secure this acclaim as Manchester’s best performing office.

Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett: “These figures speak for themselves. It’s been a really successful period for Embankment in terms of attracting businesses to our city and securing new leasing agreements. The story behind these figures highlights that the decision for the City Council to invest in this development and on-going regeneration of our city was indeed the right one.

“The recent successes further prove that Embankment meets the unique needs of a range of tenants, offering businesses the solutions they need, and whilst the buildings are important the wrap around components, in terms of infrastructure, accessibility, support, transport links and available staffing resource reflect what we already know, that Salford is a great place to do business. As we welcome the likes of Deloitte, AECOM and x+why and others, what I’m most pleased about are the opportunities that these businesses create for our residents and the city itself.”

Andy Westbrook, practice senior partner for Deloitte in the North West: “We’re excited to set down roots at 100 Embankment in early 2024 as we continue to substantially grow our North West practice and further commit to Manchester and the wider region. The building fulfills exacting standards in terms of environmental performance and amenity.”

Rupert Dean, co-founder of x+why: “We are delighted to be opening a space in Manchester.  There is a real opportunity right now for businesses to embrace the changing role of the office and we’re looking forward to bringing something dynamic and exciting to Salford and Manchester.

“100 Embankment’s fantastic location and amenities, as well as commitment to ambitious sustainability targets, will make it an appealing destination for new x+why members. We expect high demand from the next generation of entrepreneurs, as well as established multinational enterprises and look forward to bringing like-minded people from the area together to collaborate under one roof.”

Jamie Hills, development manager, Ask Real Estate: “As Development Manager at 100 Embankment appointed by Salford City Council, we are delighted with these three lettings which highlight the quality of the building as one of the region’s leading office developments. The ability to attract global brands is testament to the quality and design of the building and long-term vision for the Greengate neighbourhood.”

100 Embankment is located in the Medieval Quarter of Manchester. The nine-storey building provides 167,000 sq ft of Grade A office space a short walk away from the city-centre with a stunning reception overlooking Manchester Cathedral and a two-tier roof terrace for use by tenants.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 Remembered by Manchester City Council

Manchester City Council to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2023

As part of the city of Manchester’s Holocaust Memorial Day, the Tower of Light will be lit and an event will be held at the Central Library in remembrance.

National Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27th January and is an opportunity to learn about the past and take action for a better future.

This year, the guiding theme for Holocaust Memorial Day is “Ordinary People”. People across the world are encouraged to consider how ordinary people were involved in all aspects of the Holocaust and, how ordinary people can play a bigger part in challenging prejudice today.

Since 2001, Holocaust Memorial Day has been held on the same day each year and provides people all over the world an opportunity to learn about the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and the genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, in the hope that there may be one Day in the future with no genocide.

Manchester City Council will be hosting an event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on the 26 January. The event, entitled ‘Ordinary Perpetrators, Extraordinary Survival- An Audience with Janine Webber BEM, Holocaust Survivor’ has been organised in collaboration with the National Holocaust Centre and Museum and offers people a unique opportunity to hear from a Holocaust survivor.

The event itself is invite only and will be live-streamed for the public on the council channels. More info can be found here:

https://vimeo.com/event/2791907

As part of the event, attendees will see a demonstration of  ‘The Forever Project’, which is a AI technology platform created by the National Holocaust Centre and Museum to immortalise conversations with Holocaust survivors. The Forever Project allows people to put thousands of questions to Holocaust survivors even after they have passed away and receive the answers in real time, ensuring that their stories are not lost as time passes. More information can be found here: The Forever Project | The National Holocaust Centre and Museum.

In tandem with this, to show Manchester’s solidarity with Holocaust Memorial Day, the Tower of Light, located in the city centre, will be lit up purple – as part of a national moment of commemoration- from 4pm on 27 January.

Manchester Jewish Museum will also be marking Holocaust Memorial Day with a series of free  reflective performances and workshops due to take place on 27 January. The event is titled ‘We Remember Them In Verbs’ and was co-created with a group of young people called ‘Creative Activists’. It explores how people can share the lesser-heard Holocaust stories and connect them with our local communities.

There will be a new exhibition at the museum, musical performances and a baking workshop. Full programme and more information can be found here: https://www.manchesterjewishmuseum.com/season/we-remember-them-in-verbs/.

Councillor Joanna Midgley, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council said:

“Holocaust Memorial Day acts as an ever-present reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust. On this annual day we will honour the six million victims and we stand in solidarity with the communities and families affected.

“It is essential for us as a city to unite and reflect on this period. As well as discuss how important it is for us to speak up against prejudice today and, work together to create a welcoming atmosphere for all residents of Manchester.

“This year, we will be distributing resources to schools to educate young people and residents have the unique opportunity to hear from Janine Webster, a Holocaust Survivor who’ll be speaking about her life – I’d like to invite all to join our live stream and watch the event.”

Marc Cave, Director of the National Holocaust Centre and Museum said:  “We are delighted to be partnering Manchester City Council to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. It will help ensure that Janine’s testimony is heard far and wide – both in person and through The Forever Project. When listening to witnesses like Janine, it is crucial to join the dots between the hate she experienced in the 1940s and the anti-Jewish racism of today.

“We are seeing a marked rise on social media and even on the street. The myths and conspiracy theories behind it are exactly the same as those which led to the Holocaust.

“Having been a student at Manchester University, I know what a friendly and cosmopolitan place Manchester is. So I’m hopeful that through our partnership with Manchester City Council, we can extend our Museum’s warm community of ‘critical thinkers’, who know how to challenge the misinformation and ignorance upon which all forms of racism are based.”

Oldham’s Old Town Hall to begin next phase of Egyptian Rooms redevelopment

The transformation of the Old Town Hall’s Egyptian Room has reached a huge step forward – with work commencing on the fit-out of the unit.
It’s a significant milestone in the plans for the future of the historic building – which will be transformed into a modern food hall, featuring six casual dining-style food stalls, a bar and a central seating area.

Catering for around 150 people, the Grade Two-listed space will offer both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a new mezzanine area.

“The Hub” has been awarded the fit-out contract which will see the Egyptian Room converted into a bespoke contemporary food hall, all while preserving its historic character and original features.

The Egyptian Room is a prime example of restoration of Victorian architecture with historical significance. It features original decorative glazed wall and column tiling, parquet and terrazzo flooring, plastered ceilings and original arched windows and doors.

Internal works have now started and are due to be completed during the summer of 2023.

The Council were awarded an external funding grant of £1.1m from the Future High Street Funds towards the costs.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “The historic Old Town Hall is much-loved by many Oldhamers; so it’s fantastic to see it not only being restored to its former glory but also bringing a contemporary food hall experience to our town centre.

“This is one of the final pieces of the jigsaw to fully restore this magnificent historic building, following the opening of the cinema and well-established food outlets.  Once opened, the new food hall will add another great offer to Oldham’s growing day and night time leisure experience, along with the other great venues in and around our town centre.

“The regeneration of the space is another vital part of our Creating a Better Place programme – we’re creating a town centre for the future where people will want to live, work, visit and socialise.“I’m also glad that we’ve partnered with The Hub, who have a wealth of experience in fit-out contracts and whose past commissions include the Royal Shakespeare Company, O2 Arena, and Royal Armouries.

“We are currently in negotiations with an operator and will be making an announcement to this end shortly.”

The once derelict grade II-listed Old Town Hall is already home to a seven-screen Odeon cinema, Nandos, Molino Lounge and Bittersweet and Costa Coffee, following redevelopment.

Junkyard Golf Club invests £2.7m and earns Certified Carbon Neutral Status

Junkyard Golf Club invests £2M in new Camden location, reduces emissions by 38%, invests £200K in its team and teases plans to open in US

Manchester-based crazy golf brand Junkyard Golf Club has announced plans to open in Camden, making it their second venue in London and seventh across the country. The opening in 2023 follows a remarkable year for the brand which includes becoming Certified Carbon Neutral, after a full-scale carbon footprint assessment and off-setting programme.

Certified Carbon Neutral

At the start of 2022, Junkyard Golf Club committed to becoming Certified Carbon Neutral by the end of the year.

Junkyard Golf Club has reduced emissions by 38%, removing the carbon equivalent of 4.5 car journeys to the moon and back out of the business. This was achieved through several initiatives, including sourcing electricity from renewable energy providers, and removing single-use plastic cups.

In 2019, Junkyard Golf Club emitted 1611 tonnes of carbon, which has been reduced to 998 tonnes in 2022, as part of their commitment to reduce emissions with support from Carbon Neutral Britain.

Sam Jones, Managing Director of Junkyard Golf Club comments: “Committing to reducing our emissions is an important topic for Junkyard Golf Club and the industry we work in. In response to feedback from our team, we all felt that this was the right path to follow and progress further in.

We are incredibly proud to announce that Junkyard Golf Club is now a Certified Carbon Neutral company, and we will continue to find ways in which to reduce our carbon footprint across all our sites, with next year’s goal to become a zero waste to landfill brand. “

Expansion

Expansion is on the horizon for Junkyard Golf Club as they look to the future by creating a guiding purpose and values that will support their growth program. Part of this investment includes launching their second venue in London, Camden in 2023, which will bring the number of venues in UK to seven, while international expansion is also on the horizon as the crazy golf brand looks to launch their business across the pond in the USA.

The Camden site, located at the former Shaka Zulu restaurant in the heart of Camden Market (The Stables Market, Chalk Farm Rd, London NW1 8AB) will see the company invest £2M in refurbishing the 19,500sq ft venue, making it their biggest to date.

The Camden launch will see Junkyard Golf Club develop their crazy golf theme and ramp up the experiential element to deliver a world-class experience for guests.

Sam Jones: “We look forward to opening Junkyard Golf Club in a fantastic location in Camden, right beside the iconic bridge in one of London’s best cultural hotspots for music, art, and history. Camden will be home to our largest venue, where we can offer our immersive, crazy golf experience to the 100,000 visitors that Camden attracts each weekend.”

The new venue at Camden will create 100 new jobs within the area.

Refurbishments and rebrand

As part of Junkyard Golf Club’s commitment to improving guest experience, £500K has been invested to improve existing venues across UK. Part of this investment has focused on making the golf courses, Bozo, Pablo, Gary, and London’s fourth course Dirk, more immersive, playable, and visually more impressive.

The refurbishment coincided with Junkyard Golf Club’s full rebrand, which was rolled out to improve every touchpoint across the business.

Sam Jones, continues: “Junkyard Golf Club began as a pop-up in 2015 and at the time, we genuinely believed we would only be hosting the pop-up experience for about three weeks”

Seven years, six locations and one pandemic later, it’s obvious we’re here to stay. We are always reviewing our brand position, but this year felt the right time to review our branding and marketing strategy in a way that reflects where we are heading as a company and to strengthen the message that we evolve and stay relevant to our customers.”

Charity Commitments

During this year, Junkyard Golf Club has also raised an astonishing £32K for charities. £14.3K was raised for a charity close to the brand’s heart–Love Support Unite Foundation, by selling 1,430 Love Specs glasses [heart shaped glasses that turn every light into a rainbow of hearts.] All profits went towards helping empower communities in Malawi to help lift communities out of the cycle of poverty into a cycle of sustainability, as well as building schools.

For local LGBTQ+ charities, selected by Junkyard Golf Club’s teams on site, they raised an astonishing £17.7k from selling 3,209 Pride cocktail specials.

Investment in People

In further news, Junkyard Golf Club is proud to share their commitment to being a Real Living Wage employer, meaning their hourly pay structure has increased by 8.1% in London and 10.1% across the rest of the country. The long-term investment in their people is based on Junkyard Golf Club’s values and belief that a team with good compensation and working conditions is best placed to provide the best experience for their guests.

In a further commitment to supporting careers with the company, Junkyard Golf Club has invested £200K in a new team training programme, more than doubling their annual training budget.

Leigh Caroll, Learning and Development Manager says: “Investing in the career development of our teams is core to our people policy, and as part of this programme we spent six weeks on the road training every team across the country on the values of Junkyard Golf Club and putting guests at the heart of the experience.

Introducing eight new modules to focus on brand advocacy and standards, it is vital for us to reconnect with our teams following the impact of Covid, and to bring everyone together as a reminder to have fun at work, while building aspirations for our teams to develop their careers within hospitality.”

Junkyard Golf Club will announce further details regarding their Camden opening in January 2023
