The Top Universities to Study Economics in Manchester

0

It’s hard to fathom anyone being aware of current events and not wanting to learn more about economics. This discipline touches on everything from the war in Ukraine to issues impacting our daily lives right here, in the UK. But understanding local, national and global events is not the only reason to study economics.

As the old saying goes, money makes the world go ‘round. Whether that’s actually true is debatable but money – how it’s made, used and spent, makes up a large part of our national discourse. Right now, those conversations are hardly encouraging.

That’s why we need the sharpest minds to train in economics. We need fresh ideas from progressive thinkers who can design creative solutions to our economic woes. But such intellectuals must first learn about economic theory and applications. These universities in the Greater Manchester Area are the best places to get started.

Top-Ranked Universities

From a practical standpoint, most students choose their undergraduate study programs based on the schools’ league table positions and how many UCAS points it takes to earn their place. Economics students have one more rating to gauge prospective universities by: the Economics League Table.

In these school descriptions, we list the latter first, followed by the university league table ranking in parentheses. And, of course, the range of UCAS points you’ll need to secure your spot.

The University of Manchester

This fine school is the obvious place to start our exploration. The University of Manchester is world-renowned for its research facilities and cultural assets as much as for its welcoming, intellectually stimulating environment. Many contend that this school’s engineering department is legendary (it is!) but the Economics department has turned out no fewer than three Nobel Prize winners.

Total enrolment numbers prove this school to be one of the most popular in the UK. Applications to the school’s economics programs have shot up over the last year, easily exceeding enrolment numbers from the past five years.

The University of Manchester currently rests at Number 20 (17). Interested students need 128-144 UCAS points to be considered for enrolment.

The University of Liverpool

It must be hard for Liverpool to strive against the far reaches of Greater Manchester. Indeed, these two cities’ rivalry is legendary but where economics study is concerned, this school outpaces its rival.

The University of Liverpool offers 21 Economics-related courses to Manchester’s 15. It ranks higher on the Economics League table, occupying the 18th spot (21st on the University League table). And this school is more generous with its UCAS point spread, too. Students need 128-160 points to apply.

Next-Tier Economics Programs

No matter how great, no institution could accommodate every student’s application for study. Likewise, not every student will make it into the undergraduate program of their choice. Often, that has to do with having fewer UCAS points but students needn’t fret over missing out on their economics education.

Manchester Metropolitan University

Admittedly, this school was more aimed towards science and trades studies but when it gained university status in 1992, it expanded its course catalogue to include a variety of degree plans. Today, this university’s Business School is globally accredited.

Students may choose between an Economics foundation course and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. The foundation program requires 70-80 UCAS points while the full course of study demands 112-120. This school is ranked 59th (67th).

The University of Salford

This public research university is closest to Manchester city centre; it’s a historic campus that proudly welcomes students from around the world. In 2006, this school consolidated and redefined its learning programs. Today, the curriculum is heavily geared towards Business Studies.

That’s where you’ll find Economics programs. This school offers dual-degree programs in Business Management with Economics; students may further opt for a foundation year or a placement year. This school ranks at 57 (85); students need 104-112 UCAS points to apply.

Honourable Mentions

These universities are a bit outside of the Greater Manchester area but are well worth consideration for the student willing to travel.

Lancaster University

This is a relatively young school, having earned its charter in 1964. But don’t let that deter you from planning your Economics education there. If you didn’t mind the roughly two-hour travel, you’ll find that Lancaster’s economic tutoring is well worth the trip.

This public research university ranks 22nd (11th). That’s about on par with the University of Manchester, but it offers 17 different undergraduate degree plans in Economics. Any student with 128-144 UCAS points is welcome to apply.

University of Chester

This campus is not as far from Manchester as Lancaster is but Chester should definitely be on your radar if you don’t mind going an hour by train. That’s because of all the schools we’ve featured, the University of Chester is the only one to offer an Economics and Politics study program.

That’s just one of their seven Economics-related courses. Economics and International Relations is another intriguing degree to strive for, particularly as post-Brexit Britain struggles to find her footing on the global stage.

Despite these compelling courses of study, the University of Chester comes in at only 50 (60) in the rankings. Aspiring students need just 72-112 UCAS points to qualify for application. Can you see yourself enrolling in such a dual degree program? If so, this school is for you.

From London to LA: Content Creators Empowered by Scouty’s Expansion

Scouty, a British startup, is disrupting the traditional methods of location rental and changing the way content creators secure shoot locations. Founded in 2020 by Ryan Gannon and Nico Doeser, Scouty’s technology and intuitive interface have quickly established the platform as the go-to for content creators in search of fresh and exciting shoot locations.
Unlike other platforms, Scouty does not charge content creators a booking fee on top of the rental cost, making it an accessible solution for content creators of all sizes, regardless of their budget.
The start-up boasts an impressive collection of unique locations available for rent in the UK, including restored railway arches, photo studios, London homes, converted warehouses, and even a private jet and a UFO. These can be booked for filming, photoshoots, influencer campaigns and anything in-between. The website is packed with familiar-looking spaces, and it’s quite possible you’ve already seen them in a TV advert, music video, interview or your favorite TV drama.
Scouty’s mission is to disrupt the location rental industry with a user-friendly and reliable platform that benefits both renters and hosts. Hosts can easily upload photos of their property and manage bookings, while creators can take advantage of the platform’s advanced search feature to filter locations based on specific needs, including location type, features, and price range. According to Scouty, hosts frequently make between £500 – £3,500 per month with just a few bookings.
Now, the British start-up is expanding its services to Los Angeles, providing content creators with access to some of the most unique and inspiring locations in the world. Hundreds of locations are already available in Los Angeles, including remarkable film sets, a post-apocalyptic desert famously used by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a villa where Houdini reportedly rehearsed his underwater escapes.
“Los Angeles is a hub for creativity, and we are excited to provide our platform to content creators looking for the perfect location to bring their vision to life,” said Ryan Gannon the founder of Scouty. “We understand that each shoot has unique requirements, and that’s why we offer a diverse range of spaces to meet the needs of any content creator”.
Scouty’s launch in Los Angeles marks a significant milestone for the company, as they continue to expand their services to new markets across the US, connecting even more hosts with content creators.

Local Business Inspired by Lancashire Networking Event to Make Their Mark in International Trade

The Department of Business & Trade, in collaboration with the Lancashire Chambers of Commerce, held the successful networking event, ‘Made in Lancashire, Sold to the World’, with an aim to inspire and encourage businesses of all sizes to expand into international trade and exporting.

Held at Samlesbury Hall, the breakfast event welcomed small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), business support organisations, and local authorities to explore exporting opportunities and accelerate their growth in international markets. The event featured panel discussions facilitated by Richard Slater of Lancashire Business View. The panels brought together inspirational exporters, industry experts, and country specialists giving an insight into the international markets, and focused on discussions centred around inspiration, confidence building, international opportunities, and getting goods to market.

Terry Baker from The Nowt Poncy Food Company, said of the event; “I found it really useful. I’m a small business. It’s good to know what signs to point out to try and get information because it is like being a small fish in a big pond. Nobody speaks to experts about exports, imports. Who’s the best courier to go to and knowing what local organisations are there to help. Getting to hear from experts in their fields, learning about how to get started has been really interesting.”

Also in attendance was Andrew Kirkaldy from PM+M Solutions for Businesses LLP, who said the event was “really interesting and it’s great to hear that there’s so much help – especially on our doorstep here in Lancashire – to get started in exporting and to grow your business.”

The event gave businesses of all sizes the chance to network and make connections, and highlighted the fantastic support local businesses in the North have for each other alongside their willingness to succeed internationally. It helped businesses to learn how to drive exports out of Lancashire, bring investment in, and make their mark in international trade.

Local Charity Springs Into Action to Raise Much-Needed Funds for Disadvantaged Families in Greater Manchester

Nestled in three acres of gardens and woodland in the pretty village of Mellor – situated on the border of Greater Manchester and the High Peak – is the Mellor Country House. A UK charity that has been changing lives since its inception at the end of the 19th century, by providing much needed respite for disadvantaged families, elderly visitors, carers, groups and individuals from areas in Stockport, Manchester and Salford.

As a small self-funded charity, relying solely on a committee of volunteers, the Mellor Country House fundraising events are of great importance to all who visit the beautiful Edwardian building.

Thanks to the volunteers ongoing dedication, the Mellor Country House is celebrating spring by launching its much-loved annual plant sale, to be held on the weekend of 20 and 21 May, and with the spring sunshine bringing brighter days – it’s the perfect time to start thinking about outside space and how to brighten up those alfresco areas.

This year’s event is set to burst with floral offerings, beautiful plants and an array of show-stopping hanging baskets, and the team are hosting a raffle too with fabulous prizes including a golf lesson at Mellor Golf Club, a Board & Bottle Voucher for All Things Nice in Marple, a back, neck and shoulder massage at Beautyfi in Hazel Grove, and a £35 voucher for Sarah Dawson Nails located in Marple, plus a £50 voucher from Sherlocks Hair Salon and a £50 voucher from Browse – both located in Marple Bridge.

Katie Clark, volunteer for Mellor Country House, shares: “The annual plant sale is an important fund-raising event and like many charities we’ve been hit very hard over the past couple of years, and it’s our fundraising activities that ensure we can continue to provide short self-catering breaks to those who otherwise wouldn’t get any respite from the hardships of their day-to-day lives. The escape we provide has literally been lifesaving to some individuals, and without the much-needed funds required to keep the charity’s head above water, we wouldn’t be able to continue to help people in dire need of a break.”

The website also includes more details on raffle prizes with tickets available to purchase at the plant sale weekend, and the lucky winners announced week commencing 22 May.

Oldham Active’s Young Person’s Memberships are booming, with 27% of new members signing up every month now Young Person’s Memberships and 15% of all members being aged 11 – 18.

Oldham Active (Oldham Community Leisure), the charitable trust that operates leisure facilities in the borough, first introduced its Young Person’s Membership in October 2021.  Since launching, its popularity has grown and Oldham Active currently has 1500 young members across its five facilities in the borough.

The specialist membership, aimed at 11 – 18 year olds, enables the young person to use the gym and facilities independently, without an adult, on completion of a complimentary induction, which includes a free, bespoke fitness programme.  A parent or guardian must help the young person set up their membership, including completing an application form, health questionnaire and establishing the direct debit.

The monthly membership package is just £16.99 a month and gives young people access to swim sessions, classes and the gym, with seven days advanced booking available any time, any day, for all its leisure centres.

Simon Blair, Head of Business Development, Oldham Active says: “Oldham Active is passionate about delivering accessible and affordable health opportunities for all.  We identified there was a need for young people to engage with health and fitness in the area and developed this special membership offer with them in mind. We want to improve the wellbeing of young people in Oldham and to instil healthy habits and lifestyle choices at an early age.  We understand that not all young people enjoy competitive sport, such as football or hockey, and our membership allows them to exercise in a more relaxed, informal environment. Our Young Person’s Membership is about meeting new friends and enjoying exercising with existing friends and family. We encourage young people to try something new.

“To help young people prepare to use the gym, all new members must have a mandatory induction, helping them to learn how to use the equipment safely, and how to be respectful and mindful of other members and best practices. We always have our experienced wellness team in our gyms and facilities who are available to offer help, guidance and support.”

Devon, aged 13, has a Young Person’s Membership and uses the gym and classes at Royton Gym and Chadderton Wellbeing Centre.  He says: “My mum has been a member of Oldham Active for as long as I can remember, so going to the gym felt very familiar to me.  We both now go, two or three times a week, and I’m really loving some of the group exercise classes, especially HIIT and Body Tone.  The classes really challenge me and I enjoy using the equipment. Other members and the instructors have been really welcoming, and since joining a few months ago I’m feeling really good and confident. I’m thinking of trying out Spinning for the first time!  I’m not really into football at school, so coming to the gym gives me the opportunity to work out without the pressure of team sports.”

Devon’s mum, Leanne, 45, says: “The great thing about Oldham Active is the variety of people that use the facilities. Everyone is made to feel welcome. I’ve been a member for 11 years and really enjoy the Body Pump classes.  It’s a really non-judgmental environment and I feel secure and reassured that my son can come and spend time here with or without me.  It’s great that he can access exercise on his own terms and I’ve been pleased to see him try out a variety of activities.  I find the junior membership to be extremely good value, as it includes all classes, the gym, swimming. I can see Devon using this membership for the long-term.”

Bearings & Drives Signs Prestigious Distributor Deal with CeramicSpeed

NW based bearings firm, Bearings & Drives Ltd has become the only distributor of the industry leading CeramicSpeed Insulate ball bearings, considerably strengthening their offering and introducing to the UK market, the latest technology in operational efficiency, enabling UK customers day to day direct access to these products from their warehousing facilities.

Constantly at the forefront of technological development and innovation, CeramicSpeed is a dedicated and leading supplier of hybrid ball bearings. With a strong presence in the European market, they are rapidly becoming the industry’s most trusted supplier of advanced bearing solutions. CeramicSpeed Insulate ball bearings are custom-made for electrical motors and a guarantee against damage caused by stray currents.

Steve Bacon,Sales Director at Bearings & Drives, explains the significance of the supply arrangements for UK industry: “We are thrilled to become the UK distributor for such a ground-breaking product. CeramicSpeed Insulate Hybrid ball bearings are the future across all industries, including manufacturers of electrical motors. The demand for stronger, more durable and longer-lasting bearings for electrical motors is on the rise – and in many applications, conventional steel balls in motor bearings simply can’t compare.

“When we reviewed CeramicSpeed Insulate in action in Denmark we saw the immediate benefits that we can bring to our manufacturing clients here in the UK. Taking for example how the product range brought significant efficiencies to a leading Danish dairy products manufacturer. The manufacturer faced sizeable issues with the durability of steel bearings they were using in a specific motor. The products manufactured by the dairy contain many small particles that penetrate the bearings subsequently reducing  the bearing life. Along with high bearing temperatures this led to many control shutdowns and became detrimental to efficient operation.

“CeramicSpeed Insulate bearings are non-conductive as the ceramic balls in the bearing have a resistivity of 15 kV per mm. The Insulate series is the best defence against damage caused by stray currents. In addition to being protected from the passage of electrical currents, the operating temperature in hybrid bearings is approximately 10-20 °C lower than conventional bearings. By using these, the dairy has now reduced the bearing temperature with 15ºC increasing lubricant life and decreasing production shutdown considerably. The CeramicSpeed bearings with their higher resistance towards corrosion and contamination, increased the bearing life of the bearings by 400%.”

Anders Thormann, Managing Director at CeramicSpeed explains why they chose Bearings & Drives as their exclusive partner for CeramicSpeed Insulate: “Bearings & Drives helped us to break through in the UK food and beverage category in 2017, and the knowledge gained on our products by their team since then puts them in a unique position to take the next step in distributing CeramicSpeed products in the UK.”

From their base in Congleton, Cheshire Bearings and Drives serves its national client base with industrial Maintenance, Repair and Operations products from globally recognised manufacturers of Bearings, Power Transmission, Industrial Gearboxes, Motors, Tools & Consumables.
