Police are continuing to investigate following the discovery of a baby’s remains in Little Hulton.

The baby, named ‘Baby A’, was found on Ravenscraig Road, near Ashtons Field, by a passerby.

There is currently a crime scene in place and an increased presence of officers in the area.

At this stage, detectives are following several lines of enquiry, and working with local partner agencies to understand who this baby could be, how long they have been here, and how they have sadly died.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “I want to reassure residents that we will do all we can to find out what has happened here. The most important thing for us right now is to find answers for this baby and I would urge anyone who has any information at all to get in touch with us.

“If you have seen anyone in the area over the last few days, or know who the parents could be, please call us as soon as you can.

“The thoughts of everyone at Greater Manchester Police are with Baby A, and we will do everything we can to get answers.

“We would like to thank the community for their tributes to Baby A and their support and compassion at this time. We are truly grateful.”

Mancunian apprentice overcomes adversity to win Young Builder of the Year award

An assistant civil engineer from Manchester has overcome significant personal challenges to win the Young Builder of the Year award at the annual Youthbuild UK award ceremony.

Zain Shafi (21) is currently undertaking his level six civil engineering degree apprenticeship, working with housebuilder, Keepmoat’s North West technical team

He plays an integral role in supporting the land buying process and assisting with various elements of work at the due diligence stage.

At age 15, Zain had to support his mum and three younger siblings, when he lost his dad. He managed both work and caregiving duties, often working night shifts at his home-based burger business and caring for his four-year-old brother, all while balancing an engineering course.

In 2021, Zain accepted a work experience placement with Keepmoat, which saw him commit to a 1.5-hour daily commute.

He completed the Government’s Kickstart Scheme and has now been offered full time employment with the housebuilder alongside his level six training and recent award win at the House of Commons on Wednesday night.

Zain said: “The on-the-job training at Keepmoat has been invaluable and significantly improved my knowledge and skills. It’s been brilliant to learn about new methods of construction and emerging technologies which are being utilised in the construction industry.

“I have worked hard to get where I am now, but I have always been determined to succeed for both myself and my family. It’s been difficult at times, spending long hours commuting, but my hard work has paid off with this fantastic award win! I’ve secured my dream job and I am attending university which is funded by Keepmoat.

“I really enjoy working within an encouraging and motivating environment at Keepmoat. I’m proud of where I am today both in my growing career and being a role model for my siblings, supporting my mother through a difficult time.”

Mark Dawson, technical director at Keepmoat, North West, said: “We are so proud of Zain’s progression and being named the Young Builder of the Year 2024, he has proven to be a great asset to the team and a very determined team player. His strong work ethic and outstanding attention to detail will take him far.”

How a community is preventing Mancunians from going hungry this winter

This winter the Our Manchester Food Partnership (OMFP) is going above and beyond to make sure that no one in the city goes hungry.

The cost-of-living crisis has laid bare the difficulties many people face on a daily basis and as prices have continued to rise, it has been harder for working people to buy cheap and nutritious food.

The OMFP, which connects more than 100 partner organisations across Manchester, has to date, distributed 7,700 vouchers allowing access to a weekly shop via The Bread and Butter Thing which allows them a weekly shop for only £8.50.

Additionally, steps have been made to ensure that different cultural groups in Manchester also have access to food. Established through the Manchester Black and Minority Ethnic Network, The Rafiki Food Network has been engaging with communities throughout the city ensuring that a culturally appropriate food offer can be accessed.

What makes Rafiki unique is that they recognise that when residents and communities are hit by rising inflation and the cost-of-living crisis it not only affects people financially, it also impacts a way of life. The cost-of-living crisis has made access to culturally appropriate food more difficult as the price of some essential cultural foods has risen significantly.

In addition, this winter, additional funding has also been made available to help organisations access stock through key partnerships with Fareshare and Feeding Britain, and, paying for white goods, professional memberships, training and infrastructure items.

Joanna Midgley, deputy leader of Manchester City Council said: “The increase in the price of food is just one of the ways in which the cost-of-living crisis has made the lives of ordinary people that much harder.

“Through the OMFP we hope to make a tangible and important impact on people’s lives, ensuring that they can access cheap and nutritious food throughout the winter months.

“This is an ongoing project and if people are able to help either by donating food or volunteering their time it could make a lasting impact to our communities.”

Atiha Chaudry, founder of the Rafiki Food Network and director of The Manchester BME Network said: “The Rafiki Food Network was set up by the Manchester BME Network alongside Fareshare, as well as more than 30 ethnic community groups who help relieve food poverty.

“Focusing on providing culturally and appropriate food, not usually available through the usual food support systems and, due to the cost-of-living crisis the cost of some culturally appropriate foods and ingredients has risen, in some cases three times higher than usual.

“The work we do is vital in supporting communities and families who depend on us to help them through this incredibly difficult period.”

Revolutionising retail with Quarden Token’s touch-and-pay crypto card

0

As the adoption of blockchain technology grows, one of its biggest challenges remains its practical application in the real world. Quarden Token is tackling this issue head-on with its groundbreaking touch-and-pay crypto card, a solution that brings cryptocurrencies into physical retail. By offering a seamless, secure, and user-friendly payment experience, Quarden Token is bridging the gap between digital currencies and everyday shopping.

Simplifying Cryptocurrency Transactions

The concept of using cryptocurrencies for payments has been around for years, but the complexity of integrating blockchain technology into existing retail systems has hindered widespread adoption. Quarden Token’s touch-and-pay card changes the narrative by making cryptocurrency payments as simple as swiping or tapping a card.

For consumers, this innovation eliminates the need to manage complex blockchain wallets or navigate cumbersome payment processes. Instead, users can pay with their digital assets as effortlessly as they would with cash or credit cards. Whether it’s buying groceries, dining out, or shopping for clothing, Quarden Token’s touch-and-pay card makes cryptocurrencies a practical choice for everyday transactions.

Benefits for Merchants

Quarden Token’s touch-and-pay card isn’t just advantageous for consumers—it also provides significant benefits for merchants. One of the primary challenges for retailers has been the complexity of integrating blockchain systems into their payment infrastructure. With Quarden’s solution, merchants no longer need to overhaul their systems or invest in expensive new technology.

The touch-and-pay card operates on a system that is compatible with existing payment terminals, ensuring that retailers can accept cryptocurrency payments without any additional technical expertise. This ease of integration reduces costs for merchants and eliminates a major barrier to accepting digital currencies. For retailers, Quarden Token opens up a new revenue stream by enabling them to cater to the growing population of cryptocurrency users.

Enhancing Security and Speed

One of the standout features of the touch-and-pay crypto card is its enhanced security. Transactions conducted through Quarden Token’s system are powered by blockchain technology, ensuring that each payment is secure and tamper-proof. Unlike traditional payment systems that rely on centralized databases vulnerable to cyberattacks, Quarden’s decentralized network ensures that sensitive customer data is protected.

Speed is another critical advantage. Traditional payment methods, especially those involving international transactions, can take days to process. Quarden Token’s blockchain infrastructure allows payments to be settled instantly, making it ideal for busy retail environments where time is of the essence.

Making Cryptocurrencies Practical

For many, cryptocurrencies have been viewed as speculative assets rather than practical tools for daily use. Quarden Token is changing this perception by demonstrating that digital currencies can function seamlessly in the physical world. The touch-and-pay card ensures that cryptocurrencies are not just stored in wallets or traded on exchanges but are actively used for purchasing goods and services.

This practicality is key to driving mainstream adoption of blockchain technology. By offering tools that simplify the use of cryptocurrencies, Quarden Token is removing the barriers that have traditionally limited their utility. Consumers can now enjoy the benefits of digital currencies without needing to be tech-savvy or navigate complex systems.

Promoting Financial Inclusion

Another significant advantage of Quarden Token’s touch-and-pay card is its potential to promote financial inclusion. Traditional payment systems often exclude individuals who lack access to bank accounts or credit facilities. Cryptocurrencies, by nature, are decentralized and accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

The touch-and-pay card extends this accessibility to the physical retail world, enabling unbanked populations to participate in the economy. By providing an alternative to traditional banking systems, Quarden Token is empowering individuals who have been left out of the financial system, fostering greater inclusion and economic growth.

Expanding Retail Possibilities

Quarden Token’s touch-and-pay card is not just a tool for payments; it’s a gateway to new retail possibilities. The integration of cryptocurrencies into physical stores allows retailers to attract a broader customer base, particularly tech-savvy individuals and cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

For businesses operating internationally, the touch-and-pay card eliminates the need for costly currency exchanges, as payments can be conducted in digital currencies with minimal fees. This capability simplifies cross-border transactions and positions Quarden Token as a vital tool for global commerce.

A Step Toward a Blockchain-Powered Future

Quarden Token’s touch-and-pay crypto card represents a significant milestone in the evolution of blockchain technology. By making cryptocurrencies accessible, practical, and secure for everyday transactions, Quarden is paving the way for a future where digital assets are an integral part of daily life.

For consumers, the card offers unparalleled convenience and flexibility. For merchants, it provides an opportunity to tap into a growing market with minimal investment. Together, these benefits ensure that Quarden Token is not just a cryptocurrency but a transformative force in modern retail.

The ultimate guide to budgeting for your Spring 2025 garden

Planning a garden for Spring 2025 is an exciting way to bring beauty, sustainability, and even fresh produce to your home. But as inspiring as a new garden may be, budgeting carefully is essential to ensure a manageable and successful project.

Here’s our guide on how to create a realistic garden budget, save smartly, and build a sustainable space that will thrive through the seasons.

Step-by-step guide to budgeting for your Spring 2025 garden

Start by defining your garden goals. Are you aiming for a lush floral retreat, a vegetable garden for fresh produce, or perhaps a blend of both? Clarifying your purpose will help you prioritise essentials and avoid unnecessary purchases that don’t align with your goals.

Once you’ve defined your vision, list the basic items you’ll need, such as plants, soil, garden tools, and fertilisers. Research average prices for each item and adjust your budget to include potential seasonal sales that could save you money.

Creating a budget timeline can keep your project on track. Divide your project into phases (e.g., planning, prepping, and planting), and assign specific amounts to each stage. Regularly monitor your spending to avoid overspending in one area, and plan for some flexibility if unexpected costs arise.

Lastly, avoid common budgeting pitfalls by planning carefully. For instance, buying too many plants or underestimating soil needs can quickly lead to extra costs. Research is your friend—review your list and stick to it, focusing on needs over wants.

Smart ways to save on your Spring 2025 garden project without sacrificing quality

Certain investments, such as durable tools and high-quality seeds, are worth prioritising. However, there are also plenty of areas where you can save without compromising on quality. Consider opting for seeds over mature plants, as they’re more cost-effective in the long run. For beginners, start with easy-to-grow varieties like sunflowers or marigolds, which are both resilient and rewarding.

Reusing materials is another excellent way to cut costs. Everyday items can be repurposed as planters, and larger items like wooden pallets can be transformed into raised beds or garden borders. If you’re looking to build garden beds, using materials like recycled concrete can add both stability and a rustic aesthetic to your space. Erris Concrete offers high-quality, eco-friendly concrete options perfect for a range of landscaping projects.

Lastly, look out for budget-friendly tools and resources. You can find affordable tools at second-hand markets or community sales, and many local garden groups offer plant swaps or exchanges for free or discounted plants. Leveraging these resources can be a huge help in stretching your budget.

How to plan a sustainable Spring 2025 garden on a budget

Creating a sustainable garden not only benefits the environment but can also reduce long-term costs. Start by composting—an eco-friendly way to recycle kitchen and garden waste into nutrient-rich soil. It’s easy to set up a compost bin at home, and your plants will thrive on this free, natural fertiliser.

Water conservation techniques, such as using rain barrels, drip irrigation, and mulch, can also significantly reduce your garden’s water needs. Choosing drought-resistant or native plants suited to your local climate will further cut down on water consumption while enhancing the resilience of your garden.

Incorporating recycled and natural materials into your garden design can add character and reduce costs. Use reclaimed wood, stone, or even recycled concrete for pathways and borders, adding natural charm without straining your budget.

With a thoughtful approach to budgeting, creative cost-saving strategies, and a commitment to sustainability, you can create a beautiful Spring 2025 garden that fits your needs and budget. Start planning early, and enjoy the journey of building a vibrant garden that will flourish for years to come.
