Matheus Nunes withdraws from Portugal squad as Manchester City injury problems worsen

Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes has withdrawn from Portugal’s squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Iceland with a muscle injury.

The 25-year-old joined last season’s treble winners in a deal worth upwards of £53million on transfer deadline day in September, having refused to train with former club Wolves in order to force the move through.

He has only made two Premier League starts since joining Pep Guardiola’s side, being hauled off at half-time on the most recent as City lost 2-1 to his former club at Molineux in September.

Nunes has not featured for Portugal since last year’s World Cup in Qatar, having been dropped by new head coach Roberto Martinez earlier this year.

Though he was recalled by Martinez for the team’s final two games in Group J, he will return to his club after undergoing medical tests, the Portuguese Football Federation announced on Wednesday.

Any lasting injury to Nunes would be a blow for Guardiola, with the City boss battling a lengthy injury list ahead of a huge Premier League tussle with Liverpool on November 25.

While Kevin De Bruyne is a long-term absentee and John Stones missed Sunday’s chaotic 4-4 draw at Chelsea with a thigh issue, Mateo Kovacic, Ederson and Nathan Ake have all withdrawn from their respective international squads due to injuries in recent days.

Cricket World Cup 2023: Beckham humbled to watch Kohli masterclass

David Beckham admitted to feeling “humbled” after being present to watch India superstar Virat Kohli break the record for the most one-day international centuries today.

Kohli smashed a wonderful 117 off 113 balls against New Zealand to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI tons and help India reach 397 for four from their 50 overs in their World Cup semi-final.

Former Manchester United, Real Madrid and England midfielder Beckham was there as a UNICEF ambassador and enjoyed the occasion.

“It’s just a real pleasure to be in this stadium and witness a piece of history,” he told Sky Sports.

“I know what Sachin achieved in this stadium, for his country and for the sport but to see Virat do it today was incredible.

“I love coming to stadiums with great atmospheres and this [the Wankhede in Mumbai] is one of the best. To witness a piece of history in this atmosphere, it’s goosebumps…

“Before the match even started you walked out and felt there was something special in this stadium. I feel very humbled and lucky to be here.”

Fostering Solutions North West urgently calls for 80 new foster parents

0

The number of children in foster care in Salford has increased 29% in the last five years and today more than 80 additional foster carers are urgently needed.

Fostering Solutions North West is appealing to those considering becoming foster carers to step forward and help provide more supportive homes for vulnerable children in the area.

Foster carers are encouraged from all walks of life, and of all ages, as diversity is key in meeting the needs of the many children that come into the care system.

Becoming a foster carer is a life-changing experience, not only for the child but also for the parents themselves.

Manchester based LGBTQ couple Geoff Hodgson and his partner Stephen Garry first applied to become foster parents through Fostering Solutions North West, part of National Fostering Group, back in 2015 through which they fostered a nine-year-old boy.

An incident early in their fostering journey, involving a freak flood and losing their home, meant Geoff, Stephen and their foster child lived in a holiday home for six months. This accident, which could have ended in tragedy, helped to cement the bond between them and a troubled child who was handed a traumatic start in life.

Geoff said: “He has flourished because of the love and security we provide. That is fostering’s biggest reward. There are so many children coming into care each month. If you can help even one of them, that’s massive. If everyone who’s ever thought about fostering could do this just think what a difference it would make! They just need a chance. I spent 35 years in the army and this is the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Profound impact

Fostering Solutions North West recognises the profound impact that foster parents like Geoff and Stephen can have on the lives of vulnerable children.

That’s why the agency is so proud to have once again been awarded an Outstanding rating by Ofsted, after being awarded the prestigious rating in their previous inspection in 2018.

According to the Ofsted report, Fostering Solutions North West has remained committed to its principles by consistently demonstrating unwavering support to child-centred care and individualised support, with the report stating that, ‘foster carers are extremely dedicated and show exceptional levels of commitment and resilience in caring for children who have experienced trauma and loss. This ensures that children flourish in all areas of their social and emotional development.

Additionally, the agency has actively promoted the voice of the child through initiatives like the Youth Council, ensuring that children’s experiences and perspectives are integrated into the fostering process from the outset, aligning with their core principles of prioritising children’s well-being and empowerment.

Continually striving

Cheryl Harris, registered manager for Fostering Solutions North West said: “We want nothing more than to see the children in our care flourish and for us to be able to support them to reach their potential.

“We strive to continually for the sake of the children and to receive an Outstanding rating from Ofsted again reflects the quality of our care and our commitment to helping more young people in the area. We hope this will encourage more people to find out about fostering with Fostering Solutions.”

The full report from Ofsted can be read at https://files.ofsted.gov.uk/v1/file/50230257

Fostering Solutions North West is part of National Fostering Group, the largest network of independent fostering agencies in the UK.

Palmer feeling vindicated over Manchester City exit after receiving England call-up

Cole Palmer believes his decision to leave Manchester City has been vindicated after receiving his first senior England call-up, saying his £40million move to Chelsea is already “paying off”.

Palmer joined Chelsea on transfer deadline day in September in a bid for regular gametime. Though the forward made 25 appearances across all competitions as City won a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble last season, 18 of those came from the bench.

The 21-year-old has assumed a key role in Mauricio Pochettino’s new-look Blues side since his transfer, and he returned to haunt his former club on Sunday.

Palmer stepped up to convert a 95th-minute penalty as Chelsea fought back in a remarkable 4-4 draw with the champions at Stamford Bridge. He now has four goals in his last five Premier League appearances, all of which have come from the spot.

Gareth Southgate then rewarded Palmer for his form with a maiden England call-up, with the likes of Jude Bellingham and James Maddison withdrawing from the Three Lions squad through injury.

As he looks to make his senior international debut in Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta at Wembley Stadium, Palmer believes he made the right choice by joining Chelsea.

“You know how good a manager Pep [Guardiola] is, and he gave me the opportunity and the platform to kick-start my career, so I’ll always be grateful to him,” Palmer said.

“Who knows what would have happened had I stayed. Maybe I would have played more, maybe not. But the decision to move to Chelsea, so far, is paying off.

“It was a really tough decision, and I didn’t know what I was going to do. But with the competition that’s there [at City], the players they have and those they were going to sign, I made my choice.

“I was speaking to people at Chelsea, and I spoke to my dad, but I really didn’t know what to do. I was thinking about it for a couple of days, near enough every minute of the day.

“In the end, I felt that for my career I had to leave to get regular gametime.

“It was a big move for me as I’d never been out of Manchester. I hadn’t been on loan or anything like that, so to move down here on my own was a big thing. When I arrived, it was difficult as I was staying in a hotel, but I’ve now settled in.”

Having helped England’s under-21s to a European Championship title earlier this year, Palmer insists a senior call-up was not in his thinking when he made the move to Stamford Bridge.

“I wasn’t even thinking about an England call-up when I first went to Chelsea,” he said. “I just wanted more of an opportunity to prove myself. Getting called up is just a bonus.

“I got the news straight after the match [against City]. My phone was going crazy because I’ve got some City fans who are mates and family.

“I’m going to try to make the biggest impact possible, by creating chances and hopefully scoring. I’m new so I will speak to as many people as I can. I will try to get settled quickly. I already know the City boys; Walks [Kyle Walker], Jack [Grealish], Phil [Foden].”

With England assured of a place at next year’s tournament in Germany, Palmer knows a positive impact in this month’s fixtures could give him a chance of gatecrashing Southgate’s squad for the Euros.

“I’d love to go to the Euros, but I’ve got to play well at club level first,” Palmer added. “All the attackers are amazing players, so there’s a lot of competition.

“It’s a big step up from the youth team given the players that are here, but it’s easier as we’re trying to produce the same style throughout the age groups.”

Cricket World Cup 2023: India’s Kohli breaks Tendulkar’s record of ODI tons

Virat Kohli today broke the record for the most one-day international centuries, edging ahead of fellow Indian Sachin Tendulkar, after hitting his 50th in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.

Kohli equalled Tendulkar’s previous best of 49 10 days ago in hitting an unbeaten 101 against South Africa, the knock coming on his 35th birthday, and he wasted little time in taking sole ownership of the record.

The Black Caps bowlers had no answer as he brought up his ton with a flick on the leg side off Lockie Ferguson. Kohli sank to his knees while the Wankhede Stadium crowd, which included Tendulkar and David Beckham, rose to their feet.

The biggest danger to him achieving the milestone was, when on 92, he appeared to tweak a hamstring in attempting a pull shot off Trent Boult. After treatment he continued and, following one or two nervy moments, got over the line.

Kohli made his ODI debut in 2008 against Sri Lanka with today his 291st appearance for India in the format. His 50th ton came in his 279th innings.

It wasn’t the only record he broke today.

In getting to 80, he also broke Tendulkar’s record of 673 runs made in a single World Cup.

He was out not long after reaching three figures, caught by Devon Conway off the bowling of Tim Southee after making 117 off 113 balls.

Afterwards, he said achieving the feat in front of his wife Anushka Sharma and Tendulkar made it even more special.

“It’s stuff of dreams, Anushka was sitting right there, Sachin was there in the stands,” Kohli said.

“I mean, it’s very difficult for me to explain this, but if I could paint the perfect picture, I would want this to be the picture. My life partner, the person I love the most, she’s sitting there. My hero, he’s sitting there. And I was able to get the 50th in front of all of them and all these fans at Wankhede as well, such a historic venue. It was amazing.”

Manchester United CEO Arnold to leave with Ratcliffe deal imminent

Manchester United have announced the departure of chief executive Richard Arnold, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS Sport prepares to acquire a 25 per cent stake in the club.

Arnold’s future appeared uncertain against the backdrop of Ratcliffe’s attempt to buy a minority share, with the British billionaire set to be given control over the club’s football operations.

On Wednesday, widespread reports emerged that Arnold – who first joined United in 2007 and succeeded Ed Woodward as chief executive last February – was set to leave his position.

Those reports were subsequently confirmed by United, who have appointed the club’s general counsel Patrick Stewart as interim chief executive with Arnold continuing to provide “transitional support” until the end of December.

Arnold told the club’s website: “It has been an incredible privilege to serve this great football club for the past 16 years. Through highs and lows, the constant has been the dedication of our employees and fans.

“I would like to thank all of them for their loyalty and commitment, and wish everyone associated with the club the very best for the future.”

Arnold has faced criticism on several fronts since taking the reins, including over the club’s lack of on-pitch success and his handling of a botched plan to bring Mason Greenwood back into the first-team squad after the forward was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. All charges against him were dropped earlier this year.

Arnold’s departure comes after a year of uncertainty regarding the club’s future. Last November, United’s owners, the Glazer family, announced they would explore “strategic alternatives” for the Red Devils.

Despite pressure from fans for the deeply unpopular owners to commit to a full sale, the Glazers are set to remain in situ after Ratcliffe and other bidders – including Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani – were unable to reach an agreement on a majority takeover.

Executive co-chairman Joel Glazer thanked Arnold after his exit was confirmed, saying: “I would like to thank Richard for his outstanding service to Manchester United over the past 16 years, and wish him all the best for his future endeavours.

“We are fortunate to be able to call on the deep knowledge and experience of Patrick Stewart to provide interim stability and continuity as we embark on a search for a new permanent CEO.”

Ratcliffe is reportedly hopeful of completing his £1.25billion deal for 25 per cent of the club before United’s next Premier League fixture, against Everton at Goodison Park on November 26.

There could be more upheaval to come at Old Trafford over the coming months, with boss Erik ten Hag under pressure after overseeing United’s underwhelming start to the season, with the Red Devils sixth in the Premier League table and on the brink of a Champions League group-stage exit.

NHS England pledge to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040

NHS England is pledging to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040.

England is among the first countries in the world to set this elimination ambition within the next two decades.

The announcement is set to be made by NHS England chief Amanda Pritchard at a health leaders’ conference.

With enhanced vaccination and screening rates, the goal of drastically reducing cervical cancer cases could be achieved within the next two decades, she will highlight.

There are currently around 2,600 women in England diagnosed with cervical cancer each year.

Advocate for catch-up vaccinations

Pritchard will advocate for the NHS to provide catch-up vaccinations in community settings, such as libraries, halls, and sports venues, particularly in areas with low uptake—a practice already underway in some regions.

Additionally, Pritchard will discuss plans to enhance the NHS app, making it more user-friendly for individuals to access their vaccination history and book appointments, thus further contributing to the campaign against cervical cancer.

She is expected to say: “It is truly momentous to be able to set out such an important, life-saving ambition today – to eliminate cervical cancer would be an incredible achievement and through a combination of our HPV vaccination programme, and our highly-effective cervical screening programme, it could become a reality in in the next two decades.

“Vaccination and screening are the key tools which mean we are one step closer to achieving this and the NHS is already making it easier than ever before for people to protect themselves and their families.”

Vaccination drive

The NHS vaccination drive builds on the world-leading NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme, which allowed adults to book their own vaccine appointments online, and to get vaccinated in a range of non-NHS settings.

As part of ongoing efforts to make it easier for people to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations, the NHS is significantly expanding the NHS App.

People will be able to view their full vaccine record and book appointments for any they are missing.

Parents will increasingly be able to see the vaccination status of their children on the App with support on how to book appointments.

Currently, most app users can view their COVID and flu vaccination status via the NHS App, but the NHS will be increasing the visibility of all 15 routine vaccine-preventable diseases, including HPV and MMR, making it easier for people to identify any missed vaccinations in their history.

Over 32.8 million people are already signed up to the NHS App, and through expanding its functions to include, booking invitation alerts, in-app bookings, and appointment notifications, the NHS aims to make it even easier for people to get vaccinated.

Cervical screening invitation

Alongside its vaccination drive, the NHS is inviting more people than ever before for cervical screening – over five million people aged 25 to 64 were invited last year, with 3.5 million tested – while self-sampling will be trialled to determine if it could be introduced as part of national screening.

The World Health Organisation considers cervical cancer to be eliminated as a public health problem when there is an incidence rate lower than four per 100,000 women.

Powerful tools

Steve Russell, chief delivery officer and national director for vaccinations and screening for NHS England, said: “Vaccination and screening are some of the most powerful tools we have for preventing disease and for keeping people from becoming unwell.

“We have learnt invaluable lessons from the pandemic, with our hugely successful Covid-19 vaccine programme saving thousands of lives, and our vision for the future of vaccination draws on those learnings, with plans to educate millions more people on the importance of vaccination, while making it easier than ever before to access vaccines online.”

Through routine and post-pandemic catch-up programmes, by school age year 10, 86.5% of girls and 81.5% of boys received one dose of the HPV vaccine, with studies suggesting the vaccine programme has prevented around 450 cancers and 17,200 pre-cancers.

Vaccines for young people

Following the latest advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), the NHS recently updated its HPV vaccination programme to single dose instead of two doses for under 25s.

This move will make it more convenient for young people to ensure they are protected and up to date with their vaccinations.

One dose of the vaccine is now being offered to those in year 8 (aged 12 or 13 years) via the school aged immunisation service. Children are also able to get their vaccine either in school or at a community clinic.

Anyone eligible who hasn’t received their one dose HPV vaccine can catch up until their 25th birthday via their GP practice.

Also essential to the elimination of cervical cancer, is women coming forward for their routine cervical screening appointments. Currently a third of women invited do not take up the offer.

Flintoff to take charge of Leeds-based Northern Superchargers

Andrew Flintoff’s reintegration into top level cricket continued today with the former England all-rounder named the new coach of the Northern Superchargers.

Flintoff, 45, has carved out a successful career in television since hanging up his boots, most notably on Top Gear.

However, a serious accident while filming the BBC programme last December has prompted a shift back towards his first love and he took on an informal role with the England coaching staff during their World Cup warm-up games over the summer.

He was today named coach of the Leeds-based Superchargers, who play in the Hundred, succeeding former England wicketkeeper James Foster.

He said: “I am excited to have been appointed head coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team.

“My time with the England Men’s team has been a reminder of just how special cricket is to me, and I’m relishing the opportunity to be back amongst it, helping to guide the Superchargers team to success on the field while making memories off it and helping to take cricket to more people.

“The Superchargers have a great fan base who I cannot wait to meet and bring along with us this season. I’m looking forward to making Headingley my new home.”

Northern Superchargers chair Kirsty Bashforth said: “We are thrilled to welcome Andrew to the Northern Superchargers family.

“He is an inspirational figure who has huge respect across the game of cricket and he is someone we know will excite our players, coaches, and our fans. Andrew will help us to create a unique culture and we are extremely excited about working with him to inspire our squad further with positive, entertaining and consistently winning cricket.”

New cameras ‘more likely’ to catch speeding drivers

Speeding motorists are warned they are “more likely to be caught” with new cameras that capture two-way traffic.

The VECTOR-SR cameras, developed by Jenoptik, have been funded through the Mayor’s Challenge Fund (MCF) to improve road safety and support Greater Manchester’s commitment to Vision Zero, the aim to eliminate all road fatalities and serious injuries.

As with the old-style cameras, they will be yellow and in operation 24/7.

Ultra cameras

However unlike traditional cameras, the new ‘ultra’ speed cameras use infra-red low-light technology, meaning they will no longer ‘flash’ at speeding drivers.

They also capture two-way traffic.

If you are caught speeding, you could also be prosecuted for other offences such as the use of mobile devices behind the wheel and not wearing a seatbelt.

Despite common misconceptions, the cameras solely catch speeding drivers and are not processed using artificial intelligence (AI).

Upgraded speed cameras

Superintendent Gareth Parkin said: “The new and upgraded speed cameras across the city-region will ensure that drivers adhere to road speeds and do not engage in reckless or anti-social driving.

“Speed limits are put in place to ensure our roads are safe. Excessive speeds increase the chances of driver error, increase the time it takes for a vehicle to stop and can also increase fatalities in the event of a collision.

“Nationally there were 1,711 fatalities last year and nearly 19,000 since 2012, which is more harm than knife crime. Regionally 73 per cent of collisions involve human error, individual responsibility is key if we are going to make a difference hence our approach targeting speeding drivers.

“I would like to thank the Mayor’s Office and Safer Roads Greater Manchester for continuing to work with GMP to help tackle these issues.

“GMP will not allow the safety of our roads to be compromised by dangerous drivers, and appropriate action will always be taken against offenders. To report any information or crime, call police 101 or in an emergency call 999. There is also the option to report online at www.gmp.police.uk.”

“Any death is one too many”

Peter Boulton, Transport for Greater Manchester’s head of highways, added: “Any death or serious injury on our roads is one too many, and speeding is the leading cause of fatal road injuries which have a devastating impact on people’s lives.

“By investing in these safety cameras, we are underlining our commitment to Vision Zero, our ambition to reduce and eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads, therefore making Greater Manchester a safer place for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and motorists.

“However education is just as important as enforcement when it comes to tackling speeding, and I would strongly advise drivers to consider their behaviour when on the road to keep themselves and others safe.”
