Davis Cup Finals: Preview, prediction and how to watch with Djokovic, Sinner and Norrie in action

The state of play

The 2023 Davis Cup Finals begin on Tuesday, with eight nations bidding to become champions of the world and the likes of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner and Cameron Norrie all in action in Malaga.

Canada are looking to defend the trophy they captured in 2022 with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Milos Raonic spearheading their charge for a second title. Another success in southern Spain would bring up a Canadian double, with the country’s women’s team having lifted the Billie Jean Cup for the first time earlier this month.

Elsewhere, Djokovic is defending a staggering record at the Davis Cup, having won his last 20 singles matches in the competition in a run dating back to 2011. If the 36-year-old can extend that winning streak to 23, it would represent another high point in a year which has seen him win three grand slams, lose a classic Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz and capture a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title.

Djokovic wins record seventh ATP Finals title by sweeping Sinner aside, inches clear of Federer

Djokovic’s first task will be to lead Serbia past Great Britain in the quarter-finals, with Norrie shouldering his nation’s hopes after Andy Murray – the hero of the team’s 2015 success – was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury.

Those two teams have landed on the same side of the draw as Italy, with world number four Sinner potentially having the chance to avenge Sunday’s showpiece loss to Djokovic at the ATP Finals, if he can first help his team past the Netherlands.

Canada kick things off against surprise package Finland on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to face either the Czech Republic or Australia in the final four.

From there, all roads lead to Sunday’s final, where the winners of the 111th edition of the historic tournament will become known.

How does it work?

The eight teams in action this week all qualified by advancing through their four-team groups in September, with Canada and Italy progressing from Group A, Great Britain and Australia finishing as the top two in Group B, the Czech Republic and Serbia doing likewise in Group C, and the Netherlands and Finland edging out heavyweights the United States in Group D.

Each tie at the Finals will consist of two singles matches and one doubles match, with all contests being best-of-three tiebreak sets. That format means any team with an exceptionally strong number one (we’re looking at you, Serbia) could be in a good position.

Who’s in action?

Djokovic is the main attraction for those flocking to Malaga for the event, with the 24-time grand slam champion in exceptional form after Sunday’s ATP Finals triumph – which took him past Roger Federer outright for the most titles at that tournament.

The Serbian, who will finish a calendar year at the top of the ATP world rankings for a record-extending eighth time, will be supported by the likes of Laslo Djere and Dusan Lajovic.

Their last-eight opponents Great Britain will be represented by Norrie, Liam Broady, Joe Salisbury, Jack Draper and Neal Skupski. Prior to Murray’s withdrawal on Saturday, captain Leon Smith had already lost Dan Evans to a calf injury.

Sinner will team up with the likes of Lorenzo Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Arnaldi, who impressed on his Davis Cup debut on home soil in September, posting a great group-stage win over Sweden’s Leo Borg in Bologna. Italy are viewed by many as possessing perhaps the deepest talent pool, though they will face a tough route through the tournament if they are to triumph.

Reigning champions Canada will call upon Auger-Aliassime and 2016 Wimbledon finalist Raonic when they face outsiders Finland, who are featuring in the last eight for the first time in 78 years of playing in the competition.

Alex de Minaur and Thanasi Kokkinakis – close friend and regular doubles partner of Nick Kyrgios – will represent 2022 runners-up Australia, while 2023 Australian Open quarter-finalist Jiri Lehecka headlines the Czech Republic’s team.

Prediction

Canada won last year’s competition and edged out Italy in the group stage to top their pool with eight victories across their total of nine matches, and a relatively kind Finals draw should put them there or thereabouts. However, the absence of the injured Denis Shapovalov is a big blow.

It could all come down to a potential semi-final tussle between Italy and Serbia, where Sinner may get a chance to exact revenge on Djokovic. Great Britain can’t be ruled out if they do manage to shock Serbia in the last eight, but the most likely result seems to be a victory for one of those two teams.

How to watch

The entire tournament will be available to watch live for those who subscribe to the Tennis Channel International.

In the United Kingdom, all of Great Britain’s ties – including Thursday’s tussle with Djokovic and company – will be shown live across BBC platforms.

When is the next international break? The good news is it’s not for a while…

When is the next international break?

The good news is that’s it for international football until March next year.
That’s right, we have a four-month window to get stuck into domestic and continental action with few interruptions until well into 2024!
Most European leagues – apart from in England – will have a short break for Christmas but, apart from that, it’s club action from now until well into next year.

Why has this season felt so disjointed?

The autumn before a major summer tournament is always a hectic period for international football. We are currently in the third international break of the season following stoppages in club football in September and October.

What can we expect between now and March 2024?

Not just league football, we have domestic cups taking place all over Europe – by the time international football returns, we will know the semi-final line-up for the FA Cup, for example – while the major continental cups will have also moved on.
The Champions League group stages conclude before Christmas with the knockout rounds getting underway in February.

What’s the timeline for Euro 2024?

The draw will be made in Hamburg on Saturday, December 2.
The play-offs to determine the final qualifiers will be staged on March 21 and March 26.
Teams must submit their final squads of 23 players on June 7, a week before the tournament gets underway.

Royal visit: ANS CEO meets Prince of Wales to discuss community initiative

0

Leading Manchester-based UK tech company ANS was chosen to represent the Manchester business community as part of the Prince of Wales’ visit to Moss Side.

The visit marked the launch of the Royal Foundation Community Impact Programme.

ANS was chosen due to its long-standing work with Manchester City Council and continual efforts to help upskill young people in Hulme, Moss Side and Rusholme in a wide variety of high-demand technology skills.

Commitment

During the visit, ANS CEO Rich Thompson met the Prince of Wales to discuss the company’s longstanding commitment to supporting young people in these areas to become employment-ready.

“Our industry thrives on people who think differently, who come from different backgrounds and live different lifestyles. To achieve our mission of making technology accessible to all companies, large or small, we rely heavily on talent from our local communities,” said Rich.

“In 2024, at ANS, we are committing 100 volunteering days from across all our teams, including engineers, technologists and developers, to inspire more young people in our local area to get into the tech industry.”

Hideaway Youth Project

The Prince of Wales visited the Hideaway Youth Project, based in Manchester, one of the local community groups that ANS works closely with to help young people get ready for the workplace.

Over the last 10 years, over 250 apprentices have graduated from ANS’ OFSTED rated ‘outstanding’ Academy with highly sought-after tech qualifications in areas such as infrastructure engineering and information communication technology.

In September 2024, the ANS Academy has 20 places for local apprentices in its next cohort, with a team available to support candidates on their applications.

Facebook fly-tipper who traded across Manchester in court

0

A fly-tipper who took to Facebook to advertise his illegal services has appeared before magistrates.

Between July 27, 2020 and May 26, 2021, Colin O’Grady, 51, of Paxton Place, Beswick, was paid to dispose of waste.

However, Manchester City Council found the waste was being fly-tipped across north Manchester.

The waste collected by O’Grady was found dumped at locations in Gorton, Harpurhey, Moston and Openshaw.

Searching for evidence

When Biffa operatives were alerted to waste which had been dumped, they attempted to determine its origin by meticulously going through it in search of evidence.

Officers working for the council’s Environmental Crimes Team contacted residents who could be tracked down due to their waste, and were then informed those residents had paid O’Grady to get rid of it. It was found that he had advertised his services under the moniker of ‘OG Rubbish Removals’.

O’Grady was contacted on several occasions to attend an interview under caution, however these were not responded to.

Court appearance

At a hearing held at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on September 7, 2023 O’Grady pleaded guilty to five offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

At a sentencing hearing held on Friday, he was sentenced to a 12 month community order, which required him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £80, and court costs of £800.

Selfish act

Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council Luthfur Rahman, said: “Fly-tipping is a deeply selfish act and causes nothing but detriment to our communities.

“People do not deserve to have waste and filth strewn across their roads, simply because one individual decided they could make a quick profit. As we have seen in this case, this mindset did not pay off and the defendant will suffer the consequences.

“I am grateful to our Environmental Crime Team and legal officers who have successfully led this prosecution, and I want to reassure residents that if they are the victims of fly-tipping the council will investigate and bring offenders to justice.”

Police found Paul Marsh (pictured) stabbed and unconscious when they were called to a house in Samuel Street at 6.08pm on Friday.

Officers attended to the 49-year-old man but despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he tragically passed away a short time later.

Paying tribute

Paul’s family said: “Paul was our son, brother, partner and father and he was loved unconditionally. Paul’s death is beyond comprehension, and we cannot believe that he has died in such a violent and tragic way.

“Paul will be remembered for many things not least, his laughter, loyalty, and sense of fun.

“Paul will not be forgotten, and our world is a sadder place without him in it.”

Paul’s family have asked for privacy whilst they grieve for their loss.

Murder investigation

Detective chief inspector Neil Higginson said: “The thoughts of the entire investigation team remain with the victim’s family at this time. We are committed to getting answers for them and establishing what occurred.

“I understand people will be concerned when they hear of news of what has happened, but I would like to reassure you that we have a number of additional resources deployed to identifying the person responsible.

“We are treating this as a murder investigation and it is believed that the man was stabbed. We are carrying out multiple lines of enquiry and are also appealing to anyone with information about this incident to make a report to police.

“This includes anyone who may have relevant footage including CCTV, mobile, Ring doorbell or dashcam. You can make a report by calling 101, quoting 2727 of 17/11/2023.”

Alternatively, you can make a report anonymously by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

New Rochdale garden offers accessibility to all the senses

0

A new £60,000 accessible sensory garden is taking shape at Hollingworth Lake Country Park.

It promises to deliver a diverse and balanced sensory experience to engage the senses.

Work began earlier in the year thanks to initial funding of £27,500 from Pennines Township to kick off the vision created by DK Garden Designs.

The garden, adjacent to the new café at the former visitor centre site, will include many elements to stimulate and engage all five senses, allowing visitors to experience nature in a unique and immersive way.

Various colours, shapes, and fragrances feature heavily in the design, which will be brought to life through different flowers and foliage.

Woodland walk

A woodland walk and wide stone pathways made from non-slip materials will allow access for wheelchair users, and raised flower beds will provide easy access for all ages and abilities.

Plants and wind chimes will create sounds and movement, plus touchable elements such as sculptures, willow structures, and an orchard will be just some of the highlights.

Additional funding from a local memorial scheme has allowed for further planting and installation of a copper memorial tree and benches, which will sit proudly in the finished garden alongside several trees donated by the RSPCA.

Once completed, the multipurpose all-season site will be ready for educational purposes, and a living willow structure meeting dome funded by local company Fraudenburg UK will hold events and classes in horticulture.

Community activities

Councillor Liam O’Rourke, the council’s cabinet member for climate change and environment, said: “This garden will introduce a significant new facility for our borough and allow rangers to develop community engagement activities, including wildlife and therapeutic gardening sessions, alongside volunteer sessions, where we hope to recruit more members to our Green Volunteer scheme.

“On top of many health benefits, the planned sights, sounds, and scents will offer a tranquil environment, providing a retreat away from the demands of daily life, and I cannot wait to see this inclusive area used to bring people together to connect, learn, and appreciate nature in the most beautiful of spaces.”

David Keegan added: “I’m so happy that DK Garden Design could create the plan for the new sensory garden. The layout has taken careful planning to make the garden accessible to all, focusing on delighting the senses along the way, which will evolve. There are still many exciting features to come, and I look forward to my continued connection, seeing the plan come alive for all to enjoy.”

The garden is due to be completed in early 2024.

Internal linking vs. external linking: Which matters more for SEO?

0

In the world of SEO, where every link you make and every link that points to your website matters.

Linking plays a pivotal role in determining your website’s ranking and authority on search engine results pages. The question that often arises is, “What matters more for SEO: internal linking or external linking?”

Many people have their own opinions on this debate. But, the way to settle is to do your own research. This means investigating internal linking and why it matters, as well as why external linking is essential. Let’s break it down and find out.

Internal linking: Foundation of on-site SEO

So, what exactly is internal linking? Well, it’s like the secret sauce of on-site SEO. Internal links are the links within your website, connecting one page to another. Their primary purpose is to facilitate navigation, distribute link equity, and provide valuable information to both users and search engines. Consider them as the signposts that guide both users and search engine crawlers through your website’s intricate maze.

SEO benefits of internal linking

First and foremost, it makes your website more accessible to search engine crawlers, ensuring that every nook and cranny of your content gets noticed. This leads to a higher likelihood of your pages ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs).

But it’s not just about search engines. Proper internal linking also enhances the user experience. They guide visitors to related content, which keeps them engaged and reduces bounce rates. By making navigation smoother, you encourage users to explore more of your site, increasing the time they spend on it.

External linking: The SEO landscape beyond your website

External linking is often referred to as backlinking. External links are those that point from other websites to your site. They serve as endorsements, essentially vouching for the credibility and authority of your content.

Think of external links as references on your resume. The more reputable references you have, the more attractive you appear to potential employers. In the SEO world, the “employers” are search engines, and the “references” are backlinks.

SEO benefits of external linking

External linking has a significant impact on your website’s search engine rankings. Quality backlinks, especially from authoritative and relevant websites, can give your site a boost in terms of visibility and credibility. Search engines see these backlinks as a vote of confidence in your content.

High-quality external links can help you establish authority and trust within your niche. They tell search engines that your content is reliable, informative, and worth ranking higher in search results. This, in turn, can lead to increased organic traffic.

The debate: internal vs. external linking

Now, let’s address the million-dollar question: which matters more, internal or external linking? The answer isn’t black and white. It’s a debate that’s been ongoing for years, with compelling arguments on both sides.

Proponents of internal linking argue that it’s within your control, and it directly improves user experience. On the other hand, external linking enthusiasts point to the power of authoritative backlinks in boosting your site’s visibility and credibility.

The balance between internal and external links

The real key is balance. Successful SEO strategies often involve both internal and external linking. Internal links create a seamless user experience and improve on-site SEO, while external links enhance your site’s authority in the eyes of search engines.

Consider this balance as the yin and yang of SEO. One complements the other, creating a harmonious SEO ecosystem that propels your website upward on the SERPs.

What your SEO strategy could look like

If you’ve decided to take the balanced approach, you might debate what your SEO strategy should look like. Well, here are some practices you can consider using in order to boost the visibility of your website on the internet.

Relevant is essential when it comes to internal linking. You shouldn’t just create random hyperlinks. You need to sit down and think about the navigation you want your site to take. This is something that’s crucial for user experience and helping search engines. Therefore, link pages that relate to each other. You also want to think about the anchor text used. It should also be relevant, avoiding generic phrases.

Next is external linking. While it’s easy to think that the more external links you have, the better your website will do on the internet. This isn’t the approach you want to go for. There should be a concentration on quality. Research and find reputable websites that you want to link to you.

Try to build relationships so that your backlinks are natural and beneficial. Don’t forget that you want to create high-quality content too. While it won’t feature on your site, this can help you connect with others and ensure people visit your website.

Consistency in approach

Being impatient with SEO results is common. But, you have to remember that patience is the key to success. It can take months of hard work and consistency to improve your rankings on popular search engines. After all, other sites are doing the same thing. Remain committed to your strategy, and you’ll see the results you wish for.

Conclusion

In the end, it’s not about internal vs. external linking; it’s about understanding their respective roles and using them strategically. A successful SEO strategy includes both, as they are interconnected and essential for SEO success.

The key is to focus on quality. Create valuable content, enhance user experience with internal links, and build relationships to earn authoritative backlinks. Remember, a balanced approach to both internal and external linking is the path to SEO greatness.

The rise of alternative investments: Exploring new avenues for investors

0

In recent years, there has been a notable shift in the investment landscape. Traditional investment avenues, such as stocks, bonds, and real estate, continue to dominate portfolios globally.

However, the rise of alternative investments is challenging the status quo, offering investors diversified ways to generate returns. From fine art to vintage cars, and from rare coins to cask whisky investment, the scope for alternative investment is expanding, presenting a wealth of new opportunities.

What are alternative investments?

At the most basic level, alternative investments are those that don’t fall into the traditional categories of stocks, bonds, or cash. These investments often exhibit low correlation with standard asset classes, making them valuable tools for diversification and risk mitigation.

Why the surge in popularity?

There are several reasons behind the rising interest in alternative investments:

  • Diversification: As mentioned, alternative investments tend not to move in tandem with traditional markets. This can help insulate portfolios from market downturns.
  • Potential for higher returns: Some alternative investments, particularly those in niche sectors, offer the potential for high returns. However, it’s essential to note that with high potential returns sometimes comes increased risk.
  • Tangibility: For many, the appeal lies in owning a tangible asset, whether it’s a piece of art, a vintage car, or a cask of whisky.

Exploring the array of options

Here are some of the most notable alternative investment options capturing investors’ attention:

  • Art and collectibles: Fine art, stamps, coins, and other collectables have long been favoured by investors with a penchant for tangible assets. These investments can appreciate over time, especially if the item in question becomes rare or gains cultural significance.
  • Wine and spirits: Investing in fine wines or spirits has become a lucrative pursuit for many. The term cask whisky investment has gained traction as enthusiasts realise the potential for significant returns from rare and aged whiskies. Unlike other spirits, whisky can continue to age and improve in flavour while in the cask, adding to its value.
  • Tangible assets: This category includes physical assets like precious metals, timber, and real estate. While some might argue that real estate isn’t truly an “alternative” investment, certain subsectors, like overseas property investment or raw land acquisition, certainly fit the bill.
  • Private equity and venture capital: These involve directly investing in private companies or start-ups, respectively. While they can offer substantial returns, they are also at higher risk given the uncertainty surrounding new companies.
  • Hedge funds: These pooled investment funds use various strategies to earn active returns for their investors. They might invest in equities, derivatives, currencies, or a combination of assets.

Risks and rewards

As with any investment, it’s crucial to balance potential rewards with inherent risks. Alternative investments can be less liquid than traditional assets, meaning they can be harder to sell quickly. Moreover, they might lack the same level of regulation as standard investment options. Information transparency can also be an issue, as alternative investments may not always provide frequent performance updates.

However, for many, the rewards can outweigh the risks. The potential for high returns, combined with the opportunity for diversification, makes alternative investments an enticing proposition for those with a risk appetite.

Future of alternative investments

The trajectory for alternative investments looks promising. As technological advancements continue, we will likely see increased democratisation of these investment options. Platforms are emerging that allow investors to buy fractional ownership in artwork, luxury items, or even real estate. With blockchain technology, tokenising such assets to offer fractional ownership will further open the market to a broader audience.

Moreover, as global markets become more interconnected, investors will increasingly seek diversification to shield their portfolios from potential downturns. Alternative investments, with their inherent low correlation to traditional markets, are perfectly poised to meet this demand.

Navigating the complexity of alternative investments

While the world of alternative investments offers a plethora of opportunities, it also brings complexity and requires a nuanced approach. Different assets within this category might have entirely different market dynamics.

For example, while the value of a cask whisky investment might be influenced by factors such as age, rarity, and brand reputation, an investment in a start-up company would be determined by entirely different metrics, such as market potential, the competency of the management team, and technological advancements.

Hence, specialisation or consultation with industry experts becomes paramount. The advantage of this complexity, however, is that it often acts as a barrier to entry, ensuring that the market isn’t saturated and providing early entrants with potentially greater returns on investment.

The role of education in alternative investments

Education plays a vital role in the alternative investment realm. Given the unique nature of these assets, having a solid understanding of each market’s nuances can be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful venture.

Numerous platforms and institutions now offer courses, seminars, and webinars focusing exclusively on particular alternative investments. These educational resources not only provide a deep dive into the asset’s intricacies but also equip investors with the tools to critically assess potential risks and rewards.

Just as one would not dive into the stock market without a basic understanding of its workings, diving into alternative investments without proper knowledge could be perilous. However, with the right education, investors can unlock the vast potential that this fascinating world holds.

Conclusion
