West Indies v England, 4th T20I: Preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

Having lost the first two T20Is against the West Indies before allowing their hosts a total of 222 in Grenada in Saturday’s third contest, England looked to be dead and buried.

Enter Phil Salt. He needed just 51 deliveries to record his maiden T20I hundred, finishing unbeaten on 109 from 56 to drag England back into contention.

From there, it was Harry Brook who stepped up to smash the required 21 runs off the final over as England pulled off their third-highest chase in the format to keep the five-match series alive ahead of Tuesday’s fourth contest in Trinidad.

After producing a series of meek performances with the bat throughout their limited-overs tour of the Caribbean, Jos Buttler’s team will hope that triumph represents something of a turning point as they bid to force a decider on Thursday.

The Windies, though, showed they have plenty of firepower of their own last time out as Nicholas Pooran hit a 45-ball 82.

They needed all five matches to seal a 3-2 series win when England last visited back in January 2022, but they will be keen to complete the job with one to spare on Tuesday.

Team News

England made two alterations for the third T20I, bringing in Reece Topley and Gus Atkinson for Rehan Ahmed and Chris Woakes. They may opt against changing a winning team for this one, though more will be expected from Will Jacks at No.3 after he managed just one run off six balls last time out.

Sherfane Rutherford came in for Shimron Hetmyer to make 29 off 17 deliveries for the Windies last time out, and it remains to be seen whether the hosts will make changes following their first loss of the series.

Expected Line-ups

West Indies: Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell (c), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph.

England: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (c), Will Jacks, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Gus Atkinson, Tymal Mills, Reece Topley.

What they said

Salt on hitting his maiden T20I century last time out:

“It feels like it’s been a long time coming. It’s special to do it now. We’ve been talking about someone standing up and being the match-winner. It’s about playing my game and doing it my way.”

Liam Livingstone on his upturn after making 30 off 18 on Saturday:

“Hopefully I’m back on an upward curve with my batting which has probably been on a downward curve for the last couple of months.

“I’ve felt really good in this series, really clear and like I’m heading in the right direction. With two games left, hopefully in one of them I can go on, get a big score and win a game for England.”

Captain Rovman Powell on the Windies’ first loss of the series:

“It was obviously disappointing to score 220 and lose, but the guys gave it a fair shot. We have quality guys on the field to do the job. It’s just unfortunate it didn’t come off.

“It’s just down to us to sit down, take the flight and come up with plans. I think the plans are still very good against these English batters.”

When and how to watch

Like the rest of England’s white-ball tour, Tuesday’s match will be shown live by TNT Sports in the UK, with the fourth T20I getting under way at 20:00 UK time.

Prediction

England had looked totally bereft of confidence throughout their tour of the Caribbean, but might Saturday’s chase prove the catalyst for a turnaround?

If Salt and Brook can maintain their form from the third T20I, we’re backing England to level things up and make Thursday’s final contest a decider.

Kevin De Bruyne returns to Manchester City training ahead of Club World Cup

Kevin De Bruyne returned to training with Manchester City on Monday ahead of their FIFA Club World Cup semi-final against Urawa Red Diamonds, having missed four months with a hamstring injury.

Having also been substituted early in City’s UEFA Champions League final win over Inter in June, De Bruyne suffered his latest injury setback during a 3-0 win over Burnley on the opening day of the Premier League season in August.

The Belgian lasted just 23 minutes at Turf Moor before being substituted and subsequently underwent surgery, with boss Pep Guardiola predicting a January return for the 32-year-old.

De Bruyne was a surprise inclusion in City’s squad for their Club World Cup campaign in Saudi Arabia, and he joined his team-mates in training at the King Abdullah Sports City complex on Monday.

The creative midfielder is unlikely to feature against last season’s AFC Champions League winners on Tuesday, however, and a potential final or third-place play-off on Friday could also come too soon for him.

However, the sight of De Bruyne out on the grass still comes as a major boost for City, who sit fourth in the Premier League table after only winning one of their last six games in the competition.

There was no sign of Erling Haaland or Jeremy Doku at Monday’s training session, though, with both players likely to sit out Tuesday’s match after suffering injuries earlier this month.

Ahead of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, Guardiola expressed hope that Haaland would play some part in City’s Club World Cup campaign as they bid to win the trophy for the first time.

South Africa v India 2nd ODI: Preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

It’s fair to say South Africa haven’t enjoyed themselves against India across 50 overs lately.

The Proteas were bowled out for 116 – their lowest ever home total in One-Day Internationals – as they made a miserable start to the teams’ three-match series on Sunday, suffering their fourth straight ODI defeat to India since last October.

On Tuesday, the action moves from Johannesburg to Gqeberha as Aiden Markram’s team bid to avoid a fourth home series defeat in ODIs since April 2021.

A treacherous pitch did not help the Proteas last time out and more even conditions are expected for the second contest, but they must improve with the bat after being demolished by the Indian attack in each of the teams’ last three meetings.

South Africa have been bowled out for 99, 83 and 116 in their last three matches against India, who saw young pacers Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan take nine wickets between them on Sunday as the team won their first 50-over outing since losing the World Cup final.

Debutant Sai Sudharsan made an eye-catching half-century in a short innings after being brought in to open, and stand-in captain KL Rahul will be looking for more of the same from the 22-year-old on Tuesday.

However, at a slow venue which has gone 12 years without an ODI score of 300, it could all come down to how both sides use the ball. After tearing through their hosts in quick time in the opener, can India complete the job with a game to spare?

What they said

South Africa batting coach DP Duminy on the first ODI:

“When you are trying to build a style of play, you are potentially going to have those contrasting experiences. That’s where the learning happens. That’s the journey for us.

“When it’s good, we are really good. When conditions are good we can score 400, but how do we still find our way to 280 on a tough wicket? That’s the question for us.

“I’ve got no doubt, come Tuesday, that we’ll be putting up a big performance, no matter what we have to do first.”

Rahul on how India fared without key players in the opener:

“There is a lot of cricket being played these days. You have to prioritise formats and at the moment it is Test cricket and T20s. That is the modern-day game, but we believe whoever is here will perform for their country.

“We had planned to bring the spinners into the game early after what we saw in the T20 match, but there was a lot of help in the wicket and the boys did really well to put the ball into the right areas.”

Team News

South Africa are expected to field spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi as they plot the best route of attack on the Gqeberha surface. With the bat, Reeza Hendricks must give a better account of himself after falling for an eight-ball duck on Sunday.

India will be without Shreyas Iyer as he leaves to join up with the Test team, and Rajat Patidar is the favourite to replace him. That should be the tourists’ only change as the youngsters get another chance to impress.

Expected line-ups

South Africa: Reeza Hendricks, Tony de Zorzi, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram (c), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Wiaan Mulder, Nandre Burger, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi.

India: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (c), Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar.

When and how to watch

The entirety of the ODI series is being shown live by Sky Sports in the UK. With Tuesday’s day-night match getting underway at 11:00 UK time, coverage begins on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket at 10:30, later resuming on Sky Sports Main Event at 16:30.

Prediction

While South Africa will be determined to keep the series alive for Thursday’s final ODI in Paarl, it’s difficult to look past an India team which has enjoyed plenty of success against the Proteas lately.

Though the loss of Iyer will be felt after he joined Sudharsan in making 50 in the opener, expect India to deepen the hosts’ woes by wrapping up the series, with the tourists’ attack impressing again.

Manchester City fined £120,000 after Hooper confrontation

Manchester City have been fined £120,000 for failing to control their players after they surrounded referee Simon Hooper following the 3-3 draw with Tottenham.

Hooper was at the centre of the fall-out for his decision to blow for a Manchester City free-kick in stoppage time, having initially waved play-on, that denied Jack Grealish a clear run on goal.

Erling Haaland led the protests, although he escaped an individual sanction.

An FA statement read: “Manchester City have been fined £120,000 after their players surrounded a match official at the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, 3 December.

“Manchester City admitted that they failed to ensure their players did not behave in an improper way during the 94th minute. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed this sanction following a hearing.”

Guardiola hoping to win full complement of trophies with Manchester City

Pep Guardiola is hoping to “close the circle” and lead Manchester City to a full complement of trophies by winning the FIFA Club World Cup.

City have claimed every title available since the Catalan took over in 2016, culminating in Champions League success in June.

The win over Inter in Istanbul meant they qualified for the FIFA showpiece – staged in Saudi Arabia – for the first time and Guardiola is eager to put their domestic struggles behind them and claim yet more silverware.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s semi-final against AFC Champions League winners Urawa Reds, he said: “It’s an honour to be here. It is the first time Manchester City have been here and we don’t take it for granted, we take it as a privilege.

“To be here, you have to have done something exceptional in the past.

“It is the fourth time I have been here [as a coach] and each time the semi-final was tough. But it’s a trophy we don’t have and [we’d like to win] to close the circle of winning every trophy we could win.

“You have a responsibility to win all the competitions. We know how difficult it is to play this competition, maybe it’s a once in a lifetime. We are going to try to perform well tomorrow.”

City have won just one of their last six Premier League games and will fall eight points behind leaders Arsenal should the Gunners win at Liverpool at the weekend.

Guardiola maintains City’s recent performances have merited more but is happy to park all thoughts of the Premier League until after Christmas.

“It’s a different competition,” he added. “Whatever happens here, things will be different when we get back to the UK.

“We would have preferred better results but, apart from the Aston Villa game, the performances have been excellent in many cases.

“We have to improve how we finish games, be more aware of what you have to do in certain moments. But hopefully we can maintain our levels of passion and desire, with and without the ball, against Urawa.”

Manchester City v Urawa Reds: preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

Manchester City have the opportunity to put their patchy league form behind them and try to win some more silverware at the FIFA Club World Cup – starting tomorrow against Urawa Reds.

Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace, after leading 2-0 with 14 minutes of normal time remaining, means they trail Premier League leaders Arsenal by five points. By the time they return from Saudi Arabia, that could be eight with the Gunners playing Liverpool this weekend.

In that respect, a trip to warmer climes – albeit FIFA’s cosy relationship with Saudi Arabia makes this an uncomfortable venue for many – and the opportunity to escape the battle for domestic supremacy may do them good.

A semi-final clash with AFC Champions League winners Urawa Reds won’t be easy, however. The Japanese beat Club Leon to book a date with City and coach Maciej Skorza, who will leave the club at the end of the tournament, will have his team fully prepared.

Team news

Both Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne have travelled with the squad but it would be a major surprise to see either figure tomorrow. John Stones came off the bench late against Palace and he is likely to continue his comeback, although Guardiola may opt to stick with the same back four from the weekend.

Urawa are expected to go with the same line-up that saw off Leon. Former Marseille full-back Hiroki Sakai is nearing a return but is unlikely to be fit to face City.

Expected line-ups

Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Ake, Gvardiol; Rodri, Kovacic; Foden, Silva, Grealish; Alvarez

Urawa Reds: Nishikawa; Sekine, Scholz, Hoibraten, Akimoto; Ito, Iwao; Okubo, Yasui, Koizumi; Kante

What they said

Guardiola on City’s first crack at the FIFA Club World Cup
“I am very pleased and excited to go there to try to win it, of course.
“It’s nice [the possibility of being world champions]. It’s a goal we could not have imagined to be there, but we are there.
“To play this tournament you need to be there, and we will see the environment, then play Urawa and try to get to the final.”

Urawa midfielder Ken Iwao, speaking to FIFA.com, on the challenge of facing Manchester City
“We’re here to do more than just make memories. Taking on the likes of Man City in a FIFA tournament is truly a once-in-a-lifetime thing. And knowing it’s up to me to either get something out of it or come away empty-handed gives me all the motivation I need. Of course, beating a team like that is a very big ask, but on our day, we can give anyone a game, and I think this kind of sudden death tournament suits us.”

When and how to watch

The game takes place at 1800 (UK time) at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. It can be watched on TNT Sports 2 or streamed on FIFA+.

Prediction

City may be struggling domestically but their flawless record in the Champions League group stage shows they still have the edge against foreign opposition. Urawa will be no pushovers but City should have the quality to prevail and ease through to the final.

Van Dijk dismisses Keane’s ‘arrogant’ jibe after Manchester United draw at Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has dismissed claims from Roy Keane that he was disrespectful to Manchester United following the 0-0 draw at Anfield yesterday.

Interviewed straight after the game, Van Dijk claimed only Liverpool had tried to win the game, and while most neutral observers would agree with that observation, Keane felt the Dutchman had overstepped the mark and should remember the Merseysiders’ struggles before Jurgen Klopp took over.

Keane, speaking as a studio guest on Sky Sports, said: “They were under huge pressure and they [United] played to their strengths. If you’d offered United a draw they’d be delighted and Liverpool would be disappointed.

“Arrogance also comes into football, it can happen. When you go away and you’re disappointed with a draw, sometimes you have to take a draw, you can’t win every game even if you have all these chances. It’s about putting the ball in the back of the net.

“Liverpool had chances and they didn’t take them, that’s their fault, nothing to do with Manchester United. I have played Liverpool many a time and they were happy with a draw. You say ‘fair play, no problem’. I didn’t like his message. I think he’s out of order.”

Asked later to respond to Keane’s comments, Van Dijk was in no mood to fan the flames.

He told the PA news agency: “I like Roy Keane, if he said that then it’s fine.

“He is Man United throughout and I understand he could react like that but I felt what I said and there is absolutely no arrogance in that.

‘Everyone who watched the game probably felt the same. We move on. We had the opportunity and we couldn’t score and that’s the frustrating part.”

Liverpool had 34 shots to United’s six but visiting goalkeeper Andre Onana was rarely called into meaningful action, and Van Dijk conceded Liverpool were perhaps guilty of poor decision-making at key times.

He added: “Maybe (we were) trying to force it a little bit at times and we could have made a better decision but it was hard to break the low block down.

“You push, you push, you push and try to do everything in your power but it was one of those days we couldn’t find the right decision to score a goal.

“At times – I won’t say every time – we forced it too much to find a solution which wasn’t there but that’s football.”

Tyler Grange marks B Corp milestone with publication of impact report

Manchester environmental consultancy Tyler Grange has marked one year of B Corporation status by publishing its first impact report.

The Deansgate-based firm achieved B Corp certification in 2022 – becoming one of only 32 SME environmental consultancies in the UK (and 113 worldwide) to join the global community of for-profit, mission-driven organisations committed to using business as a force for good.

It’s also one of only a handful of four-day week companies globally to be B Corp certified – having concurrently introduced these two mutually supportive operational strategies in 2022.

In its newly released impact report, Tyler Grange outlines its B Corp achievements so far, as well as its future commitments and goals for recertification in 2025.

The consultancy plans to achieve a B Impact Assessment Score of more than 100 – it attained 91.3 in its first assessment, the minimum verified score being 80 – and its near-term carbon reduction targets and strategy for Net Zero also feature as a priority.

Other key areas of focus include employee volunteering, which is at the forefront of the company’s ESG. Since its inception in 2010, Tyler Grange has donated thousands of hours of paid volunteering time to national and international causes and last year contributed £10,000 to charities, which accounts for 3% of its total annual profit.

As a four-day week company, the company has expanded its social responsibility pledge – doubling the number of hours supporting the causes closest to them in 2023, compared to the previous year.

The firm’s sustainable business operations are another key focus within the report. In preparation for the four-day week, Tyler Grange made significant investment in systems. This has made its reporting smarter, data better captured, and admin significantly reduced – and increased productivity by 29% in 80% of the time.

The transformation made to the firm’s supply chain is also covered within the report. Tyler Grange now partners with like-minded, ethical, socially diverse and often local businesses, as well as 20 fellow B Corporations, for everything from travel and phone contracts to office supplies.

Working a four-day week has seen the firm cut its emissions by travelling 24,000 business miles less each year – an average 21% monthly decrease. Further reductions have been made by electrifying as many journeys as possible and using public transport.

The 100+ strong Tyler Grange Tribe also reaps cost-savings from reduced mileage and commuting, as well as from childcare – none of the firm works Fridays with no loss of pay or benefits. And data from the company’s Alertness App reports that they’re 14% happier and 29% less tired too.

As all B Corporations must make a legal commitment – in terms of corporate governance, as well as duty of care for stakeholder and shareholders – the report also shares details of the firm’s significant investment in employees. It focuses on the range of initiatives and support available to them, and the substantial training budget and hours delivered, as well as its commitment to improving diversity and inclusion.

This includes working with the East London Business Alliance (ELBA) and running a pioneering internship programme – both of which are helping to break down barriers to social mobility by engaging young people with the world of work and opportunity.

As a people-focused organisation, employee mental and physical wellbeing – and their professional and personal development – is fundamental.

As all B Corporations must also exhibit transparency, Tyler Grange’s report details the firm’s financial integrity, pay scales and legal accountability – including how its officially adopted the triple bottom line sustainability framework, to measure its success in social and environmental issues, as well as profitability.

Jon Berry, (pictured) director of people, places and purpose, at Tyler Grange said: “B Corp certification recognises that a business meets the very highest standards of verified performance, accountability and transparency, in terms of employee wellbeing and charitable giving, to supply chain practices and financial governance. Crucially, B Corp businesses must be committed to ever improving their standards whilst encouraging others to do the same.

“Our new impact report brings together all of our actions, including the many steps we’ve taken over the last 12 months and our plan for what’s to come. As a business for good, we’ve always believed that growth must not come at the expense of our ethics, and we’re now working within a framework for continuous improvement across all B Corp Impact Assessment areas. It highlights our mission to constantly work hard to become better and to attract people who share our values to work with and for us.

“As a disruptor and industry leader – not only within the nation’s environmental sector, but amongst SMEs across the UK and internationally – we want to share our knowledge and best practices. We should all be working together to achieve transformational change for people and the planet.

“For everyone at Tyler Grange, becoming a B Corporation is much more than a certification – it aligns with everyone’s values and provides us with an opportunity to join a network of like-minded brands paving the way for the global sustainability movement. And the steps we’re taking to do exactly that can be found in this report.”

Tyler Grange is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on ESG, the Better Business Network and supports the Better Business Act – all of which promote a cleaner, greener, fairer future for all.

Begiristain: City need to be careful after being paired with FC Copenhagen

Director of football Txiki Begiristain insists Manchester City will not take FC Copenhagen lightly having been paired with the Danish side in the last 16 of the Champions League today.

The sides met in last year’s group phase with City winning the home game 5-0 before a goalless encounter in Copenhagen.

It appears a great draw for Pep Guardiola’s men but Begiristain was understandably being cautious when discussing City’s chances.

He told the club’s official website: “In the group phase they played against Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Manchester United and they went through. The were the second-best team in the group so that means a lot.

“They have been better than Manchester United and Galatasaray, two clubs with much more experience in the Champions League than them. So we have to be careful.

“We have to take it seriously and respect what they have done. They have something very good.

“We have already played Copenhagen (in the Champions League last season) so we go back to Copenhagen which is a wonderful place to visit.”

City landed their maiden Champions League crown by beating Inter in Istanbul in June and Begiristain is hoping that experience will help them go back to back.

He added: “We know what it takes now to win this Champions League and we want to do it again.

“We finished top of the group, and we have played well in Europe.

“Once we are in the knockout rounds, we have to understand why we are. The respect for all the contenders is huge.

“But, of course, all the opponents will be difficult and the first one we have to work on is Copenhagen.”
