Driver who fled road collision – then posed as bystander on foot – jailed

0

A motorist (pictured) who hit a grandma and caused her death by dangerous driving has been jailed.

Jack Knowles (34) of Ladies Lane, Hindley was sentenced on Friday at Bolton Crown Court on December 15, to one year, eight months behind bars and was disqualified from driving for 70 months.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and committing an act with intent to pervert the course of public justice.

Shortly after 9.40pm on November 5, 2021, Katherine West (59) was crossing Ladies Lane, close to the junction with Haworth Street.

Katherine West Picture 1.jpgThe grandma (pictured left) reached the hatched markings in the centre of the carriageway, where one car slowed allowing her to cross.

At the same time Knowles entered Ladies Lane from the roundabout with Bridge Street. His car collided with Katherine and while he briefly stopped, he quickly left the scene without checking on her.

In the days following the collision, Knowles arranged to have his vehicle repaired, with the intention of hiding any evidence that he had been involved. After an investigation, he was arrested and charged the following year.

Katherine died in hospital from her injuries, on 16 December 2021.

Tribute to Katherine

Following sentencing, Katherine’s family said: “It has taken over two years, but finally our family have received justice for Kath, a wonderful wife, mother, nana and friend, who was killed after being hit by a car.

“The driver failed to stop and went to great lengths to cover up what he had done. We as a family will never forgive him for his actions then and the actions since.

“Kath was a wonderful caring, compassionate and lovable human being, she always looked for the good in everyone. She loved to see people happy and enjoying themselves, she was loved and respected by everyone she touched, and we miss her dearly.

“We are so proud of our amazing family who have dealt with their emotions and feelings with dignity and respect throughout this case and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those many people involved throughout this ordeal, especially, the Northwest Ambulance Service who attended quickly, the many doctors and nurses from Salford Royal Hospital who nursed Kath, the off duty ambulance driver who came to our aid, the police, our family liaison officer PC Heap, and lead investigating officer PC Drummond and their team, for their tireless pursuit of justice, and their constant care of us during the investigation.

“We would also like to thank friends and neighbours for their constant support, throughout this traumatic ordeal which in fact is not yet and never will be over for us but at least know we get to grieve.”

“Deplorable” actions

PC Philip Drummond, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said “Being bonfire night, it was busy with traffic and pedestrians, enjoying the festivities locally.

“Katherine was crossing Ladies Lane when she was struck by Knowles’ car, throwing her into the air. He hadn’t been paying attention to the road ahead.

“After the crash, despite knowing he had hit a pedestrian and with no consideration for their condition, Knowles chose to drive away – yet returned on foot, posing as a bystander rather than identifying himself as the driver. While others went to Katherine’s aid, he did nothing to help her – his only thought was to destroy evidence connecting him to the offences, by arranging for his vehicle to be repaired – he then went on holiday.

“Knowles’ driving that day was careless. However, his actions after were deplorable.  Rather than admitting his involvement, he put his victim’s family through two years of unnecessary anguish.  He has finally been brought to justice and while it will never make up for their loss, I hope that it brings Katherine’s family some level of closure.

“I hope this serves as a reminder to those who continue to endanger the public – we will continue to bring you to justice.”

The Main Event

Michael van Gerwen is ready for the “different kind of pressure” presented by the PDC World Darts Championship as he opens his bid for a fourth title.

He starts his campaign against Keane Barry tomorrow night and Van Gerwen claims he is happy to be in the mix, rather than the outstanding candidate to land the trophy.

He said: “I don’t know if I am the favourite. Luke Humphries is playing some really good darts, he’s has had some fantastic results recently. I’m one of the favourites, everyone wants to beat me. The pressure is on everyone. I am looking forward to it.

“If you look at my game overall [this season], I have played some really good games, some good averages, some good performances.

“Humphries, [Peter] Wright, [Gerwyn] Price, you have loads of tests. The Worlds is a different kind of pressure but I am looking forward to it.”

Van Gerwen ought to have too much for Barry, who saw off Reynaldo Rivera 3-1 in round one.

The Irishman was pleased to get through to have a crack at Van Gerwen but accepts he will have to play better against ‘Mighty Mike’.

“The game will suit me more,” he said. “There’s no pressure on me so I’m just going to go up and enjoy myself. I know I’m capable of winning. I’ll need to play a lot better though.”

The afternoon session is highlighted by James Wade. The experienced world number 13 opens against Matt Campbell.

Do you master the art of online shopping, seamlessly orchestrating your festive purchases, or do you gravitate towards the physical stores? Either approach necessitates robust, dependable cardboard boxes to ensure your festive gifts arrive safely and impeccably packaged.

But, which UK region takes the crown for online shopping enthusiasm? Davpack’s comprehensive survey of over 600 individuals aimed to uncover the epicentres of online Christmas shopping within the UK. The study’s results reveal fascinating insights into the regions most engaged in online shopping during the festive period.

The East of England takes the lead, demonstrating a robust online shopping culture with an average of 30 online orders per person in the run-up to Christmas. This finding not only underscores a notable shift towards the convenience of online shopping but also positions the East of England as the leading region in the UK’s online shopping arena.

In stark contrast, the South East shows a more reserved approach to online shopping, with residents averaging 15 online orders during the festive season. While considerable, this number is just half of the East of England’s average.

The most intriguing insight, however, emerges from the nation’s capital. Londoners seem to have a penchant for traditional shopping, as evidenced by the lowest average online orders – just 14 per individual during the Christmas season.

Combatting Health Issues in Office Work: Chiropractor-Approved Workspace Improvement Strategies

0

The increasing number of individuals in office jobs brings to light concerns about the impact on physical health. Issues stemming from prolonged computer use, such as back pain and eye strain, can lead to persistent health problems.

In response, Office Furniture Online has teamed up with Dr. Patrick Ryder (MChiro), Founder of Dublin City Chiropractic. Their collaboration focuses on the three primary health impacts of office-based work and provides strategies to help office workers mitigate the health risks associated with sedentary jobs.

Key Health Impacts Addressed:

  • Poor Posture

Sitting for long periods in unsupportive positions can lead to poor posture, characterized by slouching and neck rounding. This can result in neck and back pain, as well as musculoskeletal disorders, impacting both productivity and workplace happiness.

Expert advice: A key solution is investing in an ergonomic workstation. An ergonomic office chair, aimed at comfort and proper spinal alignment, is essential to rectify poor posture.

  • Musculoskeletal Issues

Repetitive movements, such as constant typing or prolonged mouse use, can lead to issues like carpal tunnel syndrome.Carpal tunnel syndrome arises when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, is compressed at the wrist in the carpal tunnel. This leads to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers, which, if neglected, could require surgical intervention.

Expert advice: Ergonomic accessories, including ergonomic keyboards and mice, are recommended. These are designed to fit the natural contours of the hands and fingers, lessening strain on these areas.

  • Eye Strain

Extensive computer screen use can lead to significant eye strain, causing headaches and dry eyes. Regular occurrences of these symptoms at work might indicate a need for an eye exam and potentially glasses.

Expert advice: For glasses users, lenses with a blue light filter are advisable to decrease screen glare. This filter is especially important for those prone to headaches and migraines, as it reduces the emission of blue light from electronic screens, thereby easing eye strain.

Furthermore, sufficient overhead lighting is crucial in office environments to counteract eye strain. Poor lighting not only increases strain but could also lead to deteriorating eye health.

The Benefits of Ergonomic Office Chairs

Investing in ergonomic office furniture, particularly chairs, brings numerous benefits for those engaged in lengthy periods of seated work. These chairs are tailored to offer exceptional support throughout the day, promoting comfort, health, and wellbeing.

Chairs with adjustable armrests allow users to maintain a proper arm position while seated upright. They also offer vital height customisation for individual comfort.

Waterfall seat fronts, designed to reduce thigh pressure and improve leg circulation, enhance blood flow, increasing comfort and lessening the risk of conditions like deep vein thrombosis.

Selecting chairs with contoured neck and backrests supports the spine, encouraging a proper seated posture and healthy back alignment. This reduces the likelihood of back pain prevalent in office settings, leading to a more comfortable, productive, and physically healthier workforce.

Reducing tax burden on rental income: Manchester (UK) landlords’ guide

0

Are you a landlord earning rental income on property in Manchester, UK? As a landlord, you have important tax obligations to stay on top of. Failing to effectively manage the tax implications of your rental property could cost you thousands each year in unnecessary tax payments.

This guide will walk you through the key considerations, strategies, and best practices for reducing your rental property tax burden as a Manchester landlord. Follow these tips to keep more of your hard-earned rental income.

Understanding rental income tax

If you own and rent out property, the income generated is subject to rental income tax. As a landlord in Manchester, you must pay tax on rental income after allowable expenses are deducted.

The tax rates applied depend on whether you’re taxed as an individual or via a company structure.

  • For individual landlords, rental profit is taxed as income based on the UK income tax bands:
    • 20% basic rate on £12,571 to £50,270
    • 40% higher rate on £50,271 to £125,140
    • 45% additional rate above £125,140
  • For landlords using a limited company, rental profit is taxed at the UK corporation tax rate, currently 19-25%

Rental tax is paid annually through self-assessment. You must declare your rental income and expenses on the self-assessment return each tax year.

For landlords, it’s paramount to adhere to tax obligations. Misrepresenting rental income or paying excessive taxes can result in penalties from HMRC.

Strategies to reduce tax burden

Landlords of Manchester have the power to lawfully prune their taxable rental earnings:

Capitalising on allowable expenses

A fruitful avenue to contract rental proceeds and concomitant tax liabilities is to leverage all legitimate expenses.

Deductible overheads run the gamut.

  • Fees are divvied out to letting agents
  • Property preservation and rectification costs
  • Mortgage interest debits
  • Property grid
  • Utility bills
  • Council tax stakes
  • Accounting charges

A steadfast commitment to meticulous documentation assures these deductions are not overlooked, in turn shrinking rental takings.

Upgrading to an energy-efficient property

Augmenting the energy efficiency quotient of rental estates can pave the road to substantial tax relief.

Landlords can lean into the UK Landlord Energy Saving Allowance (LESA), which confers a deduction on the cost of specific energy conservation improvements, up to an annual sum of £1,500 per property. Counted among qualifying enhancements are:

  • Insulation
  • Wind leakage foiling
  • Double glazing
  • Heating governance
  • Energy frugal illumination

Investment in endorsed upgrades can maximise allowable deductions.

Utilising a limited company structure

Orchestrating the rental operation through the framework of a limited company can yield tax perks.

Rental surpluses are taxed at the lower UK corporation tax rate (currently nestled at 19%), and the limited company structure proffers an extra degree of liberty for legal tax reductions.

This approach warrants professional advisory, as private individuals cannot spontaneously shuffle existing properties into a corporate ownership structure.

Allocating rental income

Landlords owning properties in partnership can employ strategic income partitioning to curtail tax liabilities.

For instance, reassigning a larger share of the rental surplus to a lesser-earning spouse can take full advantage of lower tax bands.

Legally sound income bifurcation must be adequately documented to harvest potential tax savings.

Importance of professional advice

Juggling rental tax obligations is akin to unravelling a complex tax code Rubik’s cube, compounded by the constant reel of changes.

Consequently, enlisting the expertise of a proficient tax specialist is a crucial move for Manchester landlords.

This dedicated professional, steeped in property tax wisdom, can be an ally, helping the landlord:

  • Craft a tax-savvy structure for the rental enterprise
  • Decode the lingo of deductible expenses
  • Keep a pulse on the fluctuating tax regulations
  • Take advantage of accessible tax reductions
  • Steer clear from the rocky terrain of non-compliance or penalties

The professional’s fees are likely to be eclipsed by the resulting tax savings.

Local tax regulations in Manchester

As a Manchester landlord, it’s essential to keep a finger on the pulse of local tax statutes and incentives that can impact your rental property.

Manchester’s “Selective Licensing” scheme constitutes a regulatory requirement for landlords to secure licences for rental properties. Neglecting this obligation may invite fines and the forfeiture of tax deductions.

Additionally, there’s a clutch of local incentives juxtaposed with property improvements that you could take advantage of. Make sure to tap into professional advice on effectively juggling these in conjunction with your tax attenuation strategies.

Staying compliant while reducing tax burden

Landlords, while on their tax reduction escapade, mustn’t lose sight of the necessary compliance with all tax statutes and norms. Here’s a crib sheet.

  • Construct a detailed logbook of all rental income and extraneous expenses
  • Ensure the punctual filing of your annual self-assessment returns
  • Remit your tax dues promptly to sidestep accruing interest or penalties
  • Consistently revisit your tax structure to accommodate any potential improvements
  • Regularly liaise with a qualified tax professional to vet your compliance quotient

Steering clear of overly aggressive or unlawful tax schemes can help avoid unpleasant audit or penalty scenarios. In the end, the mission is to cut a cheque for lawfully owed rental taxes — not a penny, more or less. Achieving this requires discipline, organisation, a current reservoir of tax knowledge, and expert support.

Final thoughts

Rental income taxation can eat into a significant slice of landlords’ profits in Manchester. However, with judicious ongoing tax orchestration, you can legally alleviate this burden and notch up your after-tax income.

Stay vigilant in claiming all accessible expenses, employ tax-efficient organisational structures, funnel investments into endorsed enhancements, and forge strategic alliances with tax professionals. Remain compliant whilst seizing every available deduction and stratagem.

Taking a proactive approach to managing your rental property taxes will give you peace of mind and put thousands back in your pocket over the long run. Use this guide as a roadmap to reducing your tax obligations while continuing to grow your rental property investment.

Early planners can avail themselves of a presentation pack upgrade, presenting the certificate in a folder adorned with a ribbon, available for delivery the next working day when ordered by 2pm.

Private Plates: An Increasingly Popular Choice

Antony Clark, Marketing Manager at Plates4Less, speaks on the growing demand for private number plates.

He remarked: “We’ve witnessed a 30% surge in private plate demand over the past five years. As vehicles become more expensive yet more dependable, people are increasingly choosing new plates over new cars.

“Private plates are appealing due to their personal touch, transforming a common vehicle into something unique. Clients often request plates to make their vehicle more identifiable or to protect against theft and cloning.”

Antony Clark, an expert in number plates, indicates that many private plates are likely given as gifts.

He said: “Now, around 2 in 5 of our customers purchase private number plates as gifts.”

The Appeal of Number Plates as Gifts

Antony commented: “People seek gifts that are thoughtful and have a sense of luxury – private plates meet these criteria. They are particularly suitable for those who are traditionally hard to shop for.”

Private Plates can be gifts that last a lifetime, transferable across vehicles, and sometimes appreciating in value.

“With a declining interest in travel and experiential gifts, our clients are turning towards more tangible presents. The process of discovering and buying a private number plate is in itself a delightful shared experience,” Antony added.

Finding the Right Private Plate for Someone

Responding to the heightened demand, Plates4Less has introduced their Plates4Gifts Hub to assist customers through their buying journey.

Antony stated: “We strive to empower customers to conduct their own searches, while offering our expertise as needed.”

The strategy, as explained in the Plates4Gifts Hub Search Guide, starts with an initial concept like a name or initials and then expands it with additional meaningful elements such as significant numbers or dates.

Expert Recommendations

  1. Compile and Discuss a Shortlist
    • Create a selection of plate options, consulting with the recipient’s friends or family. If a surprise isn’t necessary, involve the recipient in choosing from your shortlist.
  2. If Considering Investment Value
    • For gifts intended as investments, focus on broader appeal, such as names instead of initials, or choose plates with simple or repetitive numbers.
  3. Purchase Now for Future Gifting
    • Plates4Less allows the purchase of unique registration marks for future gifting, even if the recipient doesn’t currently have a vehicle.

Plates4Less, a subsidiary of VRM Swansea, is a leading private number plate agency in the UK. It boasts over 67 million registrations and employs an advanced smart search engine to aid clients. Founded in 1997, the company is renowned for its high ratings on Trustpilot.

Despite its name, Plates4Less holds the record for the most expensive private plate sale in the UK, exceeding £600,000 in 2022.
