Club World Cup final: Manchester City boss Guardiola ready for Fluminense test

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is wary of a Fluminense side he expects to “play in a typical Brazilian style” in tomorrow’s Club World Cup final in Saudi Arabia.

City have spent the days following their semi-final victory over Urawa Reds studying the Copa Libertadores champions and Guardiola says his players had better be prepared to work hard to combat the South Americans’ fluid game.

Manchester United committed to UEFA despite ECJ ruling

He said: “We try in the hours after [our last] game to see Fluminense as much as possible – looking at the quality they have. They have five, six or seven players more than 30 years old so that means they can control their emotions perfectly.

“They play a typical Brazilian style of the 1970s, 80s and the early 90s like when Brazil won the World Cup in 1994. Lots of short passes, combining really good, one v one but also physically demanding. We have to be aware how much they will try to run in behind, and be resilient in [dealing with] that.

“The way they play demands a lot of effort [from us]. The way they play we have never faced before. They move a lot from side to side, so we have to impose our own rhythm and possession game as much as possible.”

Guardiola is chasing history as the first coach to win the event four times and he is confident his players are ready for the challenge.

He added: “The players are ready and they know how important it is.

“I know exactly the talent and the quality of Fluminense and what they can do. They have beaten teams from Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay.”

Best for business? The plans to curtail ‘super trainers’ in jumps racing

If we could cite one narrative looming large above all others in national hunt racing over the last few years, it would be the dominance of Irish trainers in the cross-channel events like Cheltenham and Aintree.

The zenith arguably came at Cheltenham 2022, where the Irish took 23 of the 28 races. It
set in motion a kind of existential crisis among British racing authorities.

And while the 2023 Cheltenham Festival wasn’t as bad a drubbing, with just 18 wins for Irish trainers, the trend has been abundantly clear.

Now, the BHA (British Horseracing Authority) has acted, or at least put some ideas into the arena. The most noteworthy is the plan to limit trainers to four entries in the major Class 1 and Class 2 handicaps, with the Aintree Grand National being the most notable example.

Back in 2019, the Irish trainer Gordon Elliott had 11 of the 40 runners in that race. So, limiting the Gigginstown stud trainer to just four would see some serious changes.

Super Trainers have dominated Cheltenham

Of course, much of this is not seen as pushing back against the dominance of Irish trainers, but instead pushing back against the dominance of ‘some’ Irish trainers, particularly Elliott and Willie Mullins, and, to an extent, Henry de Bromhead.

While other Irish trainers have popped up with big wins at Cheltenham and in other major festivals, it is those three ‘Super Trainers’ at whom the consensus believes this is aimed.

Right now, a look at the horse racing odds for Cheltenham 2024 would suggest that there is some merit in reining the Irish trainers. Mullins and Elliott have three of the four favorites for the feature races of the week.

Mullins, too, has several favorites dotted across the four days, and the big handicaps have been Elliot’s strength down the years.

Accusations of window dressing

Yet, there is a lot of pushback against the idea. For a start, some have described it as window dressing. It’s not going to stop any trainer from putting their best horses into a race.

Moreover, many of the horses qualify for the big handicaps like the Grand National on merit, thus the quality of the field will likely be diluted. If racing is deemed as a business, then the spectacle is not as good when superior horses don’t gain entry due to nationality.

Moreover, if you talk to those that matter – the punters and racegoers, they couldn’t care less about what it says on the horse’s passport. Perhaps the biggest criticism is that it does little to solve the problems facing British national hunt racing. These are fundamental problems, which touch on other areas like funding and investment in grassroots training and facilities.

One of the (many) reasons that Irish racing has been so strong in the 21st century is that it is treated like a national asset by the Irish government. Unfortunately,  that’s not the case in Britain at the moment.

While limiting the number of entries per trainer might give some chances to up-and-coming British trainers in events they would not usually qualify for, it seems that British racing might have to look at more fundamental areas.

Just over 20 years ago, the British were routinely hammering the Irish at Cheltenham, and British trainer Martin Pipe once held the record of 10 entries in the Grand National. It’s going to take more than entry limits to bring those days back.

Manchester United commit to UEFA competition after ECJ ruling on European Super League

Manchester United say their “position is unchanged” following today’s ruling that stated UEFA and FIFA acted unlawfully to prevent a European Super League in 2021.

United initially signed up to the breakaway league with 11 other clubs but the threat of sanctions from UEFA, as well as a ferocious backlash from supporters, meant all but two – Barcelona and Real Madrid – subsequently pulled out.

ECJ rules against UEFA and FIFA

The verdict from the European Court of Justice, and a renewed push by ESL backers A22, means the subject is back on the agenda but United say they are committed to the current structure.

A club statement read: “Our position has not changed. We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions, and to positive cooperation with UEFA, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA on the continued development of the European game.”

United belong to the ECA, the European Clubs Association, and it says “major progressive governance reforms have already been put in place” and that the game has “moved on” from talk of a European Super League.

An ECA statement read: “To be absolutely clear, the judgment in no way whatsoever supports or endorses any form of Super League project.

“Since the legal case was brought two years ago, major progressive governance reforms have already been put in place across the ecosystem of football in Europe and worldwide, including new UEFA rules for competition pre-authorisation; and in particular, reforms under ECA’s Memorandum of Understanding and Joint Venture with UEFA, and FIFA (signed in September and March this year). Through ECA, clubs today are already at the heart of decision-making in relation to the competitions they participate in.

“In short, the world of football moved on from the Super League years ago and progressive reforms will continue.

“Most importantly, football is a social contract not a legal contract – all the recognized stakeholders of European and world football – spanning confederations, federations, clubs, leagues, players and fans – stand more united than ever against the attempts by a few individuals pursing personal agendas to undermine the very foundations and basic principles of European football.”

A22 staged a presentation in Madrid earlier today in which they outlined their renewed proposal – a three-tiered format featuring 64 teams on the men’s side and a two-tiered format for the women involving 32 teams.

It would not be a closed shop with promotion and relegation between each tier and the introduction of new teams to replace those relegated from the bottom tier.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have outlined their continued support for the new competition with a Barca statement reading: “As one of the clubs driving the Super League project, FC Barcelona feels that the sentence paves the way for a new elite level football competition in Europe by opposing the monopoly over the football world, and wishes to initiate new discussions as to the path that European competitions should take in the future.”

There is likely to be little appetite from Premier League clubs, however, given the strength of opposition from supporters two years ago.

A statement from the Football Supporters Association read: “As our friends at Football Supporters Europe point out – there is no place for an ill-conceived breakaway super league.

“Supporters, players and clubs have already made clear they don’t want a stitched-up competition – we all want to see the trigger pulled on the walking dead monstrosity that is the European Zombie League.

“While the corpse might continue to twitch in the European courts, no English side will be joining. The incoming independent regulator will block any club from competing in domestic competition if they join a breakaway super league.

“Success must be earned on the pitch, not stitched up boardrooms.”

Neighbour blame game trashed

A Rochdale man who blamed his neighbour for fly-tipping has been rumbled after incriminating waste was found dumped yards from his home.

Joshua Kusznir (27) of Pike Street, Rochdale appeared at Manchester & Salford Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to an offence contrary to the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

In January 2023, a council environment warden inspected the discarded bin bags on Pomona Street, to find correspondence addressed to Mr Kusznir, who ignored several requests to attend an interview with the council, resulting in him being taken to court.

He denied fly-tipping the waste, telling the court that because his bin was full, he placed one bag in his neighbour’s rubbish receptacle. He then claimed the neighbour must have removed the bag and put it where it was found.

He was fined £100 and told to pay a victim surcharge of £40 for breaching his duty of care by not ensuring his rubbish was passed to an authorised waste carrier.

Mindless acts

Councillor Liam O’Rourke said: “Small acts of mindless dumping of rubbish like this might seem insignificant, but we all have a duty of care to dispose of waste in the right place.

“A bag of rubbish placed next to a bin or added to an existing pile of waste is still fly-tipping, and we continue to educate our residents that we will not take any form of dumping rubbish lightly. Don’t think it’s someone else’s responsibility, it’s yours.”

This year, Rochdale Council has made 20 successful convictions for environmental crimes.

Residents can report fly-tipping at rochdale.gov.uk/flytipping or by calling 0300 303 8884.

PDC World Darts Championship, Day Eight: Preview, how to watch, order of play and predictions

The Main Event

Friday sees a host of big names join the party at Alexandra Palace, most notably the five-time former champion Raymond van Barneveld.

The Dutchman, now 56, is back following a short-term and ill-advised retirement and ready to take on the new crop of superstars.

Van Barneveld has re-married and regained his love of the game, and is hoping it all comes together when he takes on Pole Radek Szaganski, who beat Marko Kantele in round one.

“This is what it is all about. In all fairness, the rest of the year is nothing in comparison,” he told the PA news agency. “This is the world title. It means you are the man.

“I believe I can still win, absolutely. But you have to be realistic, there are better players out there at the moment. I am older, I am not a young pup who wants to win everything.

“The worlds is special for me, I believe it. All the other players know what they can do and if they draw Raymond van Barneveld then I am pretty sure they are not happy. They know if I show up I can go all the way.

“The World Championship is something else. You can win other titles, but this is so special. You are the world champion, everyone else looks up to you.”

Van Barneveld is followed on stage by a mouthwatering clash between world number 17, and Masters champion, Chris Dobey and Ireland’s William O’Connor, who thrashed Bhav Patel without dropping a leg in the first round.

‘I know Chris and I know what he’s capable of,” said O’Connor.

“I’m expecting him to play very well and I will be ready for that. I hope I can either replicate this performance [against Patel] or do a little bit better. I know what I can do, so I just got to do it.”

Order of Play (all matches are in round two)

Afternoon session (from 1230 UK time)
Brendan Dolan v Mickey Mansell or Xiaochen Zong
Jose de Sousa v Jeffrey De Graaf
Krzysztof Ratajski v Jamie Hughes
Dirk van Duijvenbode v Boris Krcmar

Evening session (from 1900 UK time)
Dimitri van den Bergh v Florian Hempel
Martin Schindler v Jermaine Wattimena
Raymond van Barneveld v Radek Szaganski
Chris Dobey v William O’Connor

How to watch

The PDC World Championship is being screened on Sky Sports in the UK.
You can watch the afternoon session on Sky Sports Arena and Sky Sports Main Event from 1230. The evening session is on Sky Sports Arena at 1900 and Sky Sports Main Event at 2200.

Predictions

Despite his advancing years, Van Barneveld appears a man on a mission. Is he good enough to go all the way? Almost certainly not, but he will pose a tricky opponent for any of the big names should he find his rhythm.
He ought to be too good for Szaganski and the draw has opened up for him following Peter Wright’s exit.
Dobey could find O’Connor a tricky opponent but expect the Englishman to edge it.
Elsewhere, De Sousa, Ratajski, Van den Bergh should all progress.

Disqualified driver caught behind wheel gets prison sentence extension

0

A disqualified driver who was out of prison on licence, has been jailed for an additional four years, three months, after being caught behind the wheel.

Wasim Iqbal (26) of Chorley New Road, Bolton was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on Monday, after pleading guilty to driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Back in July, the Safer Roads Targeting Team (SRTT) were tipped off that a man who was disqualified from driving was back behind the wheel of a vehicle in Bolton.

Iqbal had been released from prison on licence, having caused the death of Bolton mayoress Gay Wharton in 2020.

Officers in an unmarked police vehicle identified that the driver of a grey BMW 3 Series was Iqbal and  followed him down Chorley New Road.

Before officers could use tactics to stop the vehicle, Iqbal made off at top speed, going through red lights.

Police pursued the car, which eventually came to a stop after colliding with a bus.

After a short pursuit on foot, Iqbal was arrested for driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

“Another driver off the streets”

PC Tom Berry and PC Matt Sale of the Safer Roads Targeting Team said: “Iqbal’s actions back in July shows that he has not learnt by his mistakes which saw him spend time in prison for causing death by dangerous driving back in 2020.

“During this pursuit, Iqbal even sped past the scene where he and his co-accused had caused the death of mayoress Gay Wharton only three years prior. His disregard for the law and the way he drove that evening could have been fatal. Thankfully that was not the case.

“This sentencing sees another dangerous driver off the streets, and it is another step towards making the roads of Greater Manchester a safer place to be, something that the Safer Roads Targeting Team is very passionate about.

“We encourage the public to let us know about unlicensed and uninsured drivers like Iqbal so they can be taken off the streets and brought to justice”.

Club World Cup final: Manchester City v Fluminense – preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

Manchester City can secure their first Club World Cup crown – and claim the full set of trophies available during Pep Guardiola’s reign – by beating Fluminense tomorrow.

Guardiola talked before the semi-final win over Urawa Reds of “completing the circle” at City while the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss will become the first coach to win the competition four times if his team can emerge victorious.

City have not been in great form domestically, winning just one of their last six Premier League games, and could be as many as 10 points adrift of top spot by the time they play Everton on December 27.

Fluminense beat Egyptian giants Al Ahly to earn the right to face City.

The Copa Libertadores winners boast a host of experienced players – former Real Madrid full-back Marcelo is 35, centre-half Felipe Melo is 40 and goalkeeper Fabio 43.

Add in the burgeoning talent of central midfielder Andre – a target for many of Europe’s top clubs – and they have the ability to test the Champions League winners.

Team News

City will be without Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku after the trio were omitted from the final 23-man squad for the competition. Haaland and De Bruyne have returned to training with the former hoping to be fit for the trip to Goodison in six days’ time.

Fluminense coach Fernando Diniz has no new worries and is likely to select the same side that beat Al Ahly.

Expected Line-ups

Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Dias, Gvardiol; Lewis, Rodri; Silva, Foden, Grealish; Alvarez

Fluminense: Fabio; Samuel Xavier, Nino, Felipe Melo, Marcelo; Andre, Martinelli; Arias, Ganso, Keno; German Cano

What they said

Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes on facing Fluminense
“My whole family is really happy that I’ll be able to play against Fluminense. They’re all Flamenguistas. I was on the books at Flamengo as a kid. I played against Fluminense many times. It’s always been a huge rivalry. I hope to enjoy the game a lot and emerge victorious.”

Fluminense centre-half Nino on the final
“I think Manchester City are the best team in the world, with a fantastic coach. We know how difficult it will be to play them. But I believe we can become world champions. I think we have everything it takes to win this title.”

When and how to watch

The game takes place at 1800 (UK time) at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. It can be watched on TNT Sports 2 from 1745 or streamed on FIFA+.

Prediction

Fluminense have a nice mix of youth and experience – and some very talented players – but City should be too strong. Even without Haaland (and De Bruyne), they will have too much for the Brazilians.

3D walkthrough tours for all Manchester library venues

0

Funding has been secured to create 3D walkthrough tours of all 22 Manchester library venues.

The £20,250 grant from the Library On programme and funded by Arts Council England, will allow the creation of virtual tours for the first time.

It will give viewers an immense experience, enabling them to explore broad and diverse sections of the libraries, including historical nuances and architecture, from a screen before making a visit.

This project will make the sites easier to discover and access, physically and online.

It addresses national research, and library feedback that some neurodivergent people, particularly those with autism, are not comfortable visiting locations unless they know exactly what to expect.

Councillor John Hacking said: “This is wonderful news. These virtual tours make the most of the opportunities that technology offers and will make a real difference to many of our visitors by making it easier for existing and new customers to find, access, and engage with our libraries online.

“As well as increasing the number of online and physical visits to Manchester libraries, we hope the virtual tours will create more accessibility for neuro divergent people – particularly those with autism.”

Work on creating the virtual tours commences shortly and they will be available to view on numerous Manchester libraries web pages and social media platforms from next spring.
