Joshua and Wilder face ‘Day of Reckoning’ ahead of potential showdown

Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder have the chance to put down markers tomorrow when they fight on the same ‘Day of Reckoning’ bill in Saudi Arabia.

Joshua and Wilder are likely to meet in 2024 – assuming there are no hiccups this weekend – with talks regarding a two-fight deal already underway.

Joshua, who has beaten Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius in his last two outings, takes on the dangerous Otto Wallin, who is confident in his ability to spring a surprise.

Wallin told TNT Sports: “I am coming off a great win, best win of my life [against Murat Gassiev], and now right back in there to fight AJ. I think I’m in a really good place and he is not at his peak.

“He is coming off a good win against Helenius but he was supposed to win that. I think I am in a really good position and I don’t think the same for him.

“I am going to do whatever it takes to win. I have been working for this my whole life and I am ready for it.”

Wallin is a southpaw – as is Oleksandr Usyk, who twice beat Joshua – but the Brit does not believe he has a particular problem against that style.

He told the Daily Mail: “It will be really good. It will be entertaining, tough, gruelling, challenging. I will rise to the occasion. My goal is to have my hand risen at the end.

“I got beaten by one of the best southpaws in the world [in Usyk]. Could I have done better, 100 per cent. Will I do better if I have another chance? Yes. But, I just got beaten by a better fighter than me on the night.

“It’s not that I struggle with southpaws. I struggled with the opponent on the night. Otto Wallin is a completely different opponent. Let’s just see how we get on.”

Wilder ought to have it easier against Parker, despite the fact the New Zealander has been training with Tyson Fury.

The big-hitting American predicts he will knock former WBO champion Parker out.

He said: “Most definitely. That’s what brings excitement to the heavyweight division. The explosiveness, the excitement and, of course, the secret recipe, the knockout.

“When people come to see heavyweight boxers, they come to see the knockout.

“I thank God that I’m blessed with a blessing and a curse in a right hand that I can deliver and give people what they pay their hard-earned money to see.

“It’s something that I’m naturally born with and I naturally do. If you want to see knockouts, put Deontay Wilder on the card. If you want to see excitement, put Deontay Wilder on the card and I’m on the card.”

West Ham v Manchester United: preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

Manchester United head to West Ham tomorrow hoping to score their first goal in four games. Erik ten Hag’s side defended resolutely in last Sunday’s goalless draw at Liverpool but their lack of attacking threat was demonstrated once again.

Despite being on the back foot for long periods they did create arguably the chance of the match when Rasmus Hojlund shot straight at Alisson in the second half. The young Dane has yet to score in the Premier League although he could be given more ammunition tomorrow with Bruno Fernandes back from suspension and Christian Eriksen available again after injury.

West Ham go into the game on the back of a 5-1 mauling at Liverpool in the EFL Cup. The aftermath has seen more questions surrounding the future of David Moyes even though the Hammers sit ninth in the Premier League, just a point and two places below United.

Moyes has spent almost four years in east London, and his contract expires at the end of the season. His playing style – West Ham rarely have more possession than their opponents – frustrates elements of the fanbase and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him move on in the summer.

Team News

Moyes has been fortunate in recent times with one of the shorter injury lists in the Premier League. In fact, he has only one confirmed absentee for this weekend with Michail Antonio still suffering from a hamstring issue. Both Nayef Ageurd and Maxwel Cornet are doubts for this weekend with illness.

As one Portuguese international returns from suspension with captain Bruno Fernandes back available, another will be absent with Diogo Dalot serving a one-match ban for his late red card against Liverpool.

Christian Eriksen may return for Erik ten Hag’s men but the visitors remain without several key players for this one such as Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Casemiro.

Expected Line-ups

West Ham: Fabianski; Coufal, Zouma, Kehrer, Emerson; Soucek, Alvarez; Kudus, Ward-Prowse, Paqueta; Bowen

Manchester United: Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Evans, Varane, Shaw; McTominay, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund

What they Said

Moyes on West Ham’s aims
“We’re fighting hard to stick around the position we’re in, we want to get European football for a fourth straight season. Our home form will be important to that and we want to get a result on Saturday.”

Ten Hag on having a midweek off
“First of all, we had such a busy programme. The lads had some days off ahead of another busy week. They needed the rest physically, to get away from football, mentally. We can go in the week, a great opportunity for us.”

When and How to Watch

The game at the London Stadium will kick off at 12:30 on Saturday and will be shown live on TNT Sports.

Prediction

The hosts will leapfrog their opponents in the Premier League table with a victory and they will be very confident of doing so. United have shown major frailties against every team they have played this season and heading down to London to face a team with genuine quality all over the pitch means they are likely to struggle again.

Expecting a West Ham victory against Manchester United, especially with their home advantage, is no longer a long shot and appears fairly likely.

Teenager dead following one-vehicle crash on M62

0

A man has died and a driver arrested following a collision on the M62 near Rochdale.

At 10.30pm yesterday, police responded to reports of a crash involving one vehicle near junction 21 in Milnrow.

Emergency services attended and a 19-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital, while another passenger was unhurt.

Collision

Police say initial enquiries suggest that a grey Vauxhall Astra was driving westbound near to junction 21 in Milnrow when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the central barriers.

Subsequently, the car then crossed over onto the eastbound carriageway and overturned.

The 19-year-old driver was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody for questioning.

Witnesses needed

Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses.

The force is keen to speak to anyone with any footage, including dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area at the time leading up to the collision.

The motorway remained fully closed between junction 21 and junction 22 for Denshaw overnight and into this morning as police continued to investigate the collision.

Manchester United boss Ten Hag happy to wait for returning players rather than buy in January

Erik ten Hag is confident Manchester United’s fortunes will improve when his injured players start to return – with the Dutchman ruling out a January spending spree.

United forked out around £162million on permanent deals for Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana in the summer, also signing Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon on loan. That has meant there is little room for any major acquisitions when the window re-opens in 10 days’ time.

In any case, Ten Hag believes his squad will be significantly strengthened when his walking wounded return to full fitness.

“The current squad, I am happy,” he said ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Ham.

“As we get our players back, we have a good squad. I am sure when all players are on board it looks different, Casemiro, [Lisandro] Martinez, Mount, we will be much stronger after the window.”

Victor Lindelof is the latest player to be struck down, the Sweden defender requiring surgery on an undisclosed injury that will rule him out until mid-January.

Ten Hag said: “We have some doubts, we have some illnesses during the week, so we have to see who is available for tomorrow. Hopefully, they are recovered but we have to see.

“Martinez and Casemiro are not available before Christmas. Mid-January, we expect them back.

“Mason Mount is similar, into January. Harry Maguire, I expect him early on [in the new year]. Victor Lindelof is not available. He has done surgery so he will be out for a couple of weeks.”

Diego Dalot is suspended for the trip to the London Stadium following his red card in the goalless draw at Liverpool last weekend but there is some good news with Bruno Fernandes back from a ban and Christian Eriksen available again.

Having two creative midfielders back in the squad should boost United’s attacking options having gone three games without a goal.

“First of all we have played strong teams in Bayern Munich and Liverpool, but then we had a poor game [against Bournemouth] as we have seen,” added Ten Hag.

“There are always issues and we know we have to improve. We played good against Bayern and Liverpool, but we should have had more chances and been more clinical in those moments.

“We can definitely improve the total group. As you know my philosophy is we have to attack with 11, it is not about one player, it is about everyone.

“We have to be better with our movement and our decision making…it has to be better and sometimes we have to be more clinical.”

Hojlund has yet to score in the Premier League but Ten Hag is not concerned and praised the young Dane’s mentality.

“Of course we are open and Rasmus Hojlund is open. I think his mentality is great, he is a very good performer under stress,” he said.

“It is not just about Rasmus Hojlund. It is also about Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Antony – don’t forget our full-backs too.

“We work on that fact as a group. Offensive players should contribute. When we have a better balance with players back we should create more chances.”

Undercover cops tackling shoplifting in Stockport

0

Arrests for shoplifting in Stockport have increased by 56% in the last 12 months, according to new data.

Stockport Central Neighbourhood officers have been tackling the issue by wearing shop uniforms and taking it in turns as shelf stackers and customer service workers.

Some have been patrolling the supermarkets in plain clothes.

The approach follows on from the success of officers in Salford who arrested two men on suspicion of drugs offences, while dressed as builders.

Fastest UK growth crime

Sergeant James Senior said: “The concept of police officers working in plain clothes is not a new one – what we are doing is thinking out of the box to try and tackle the fastest growth crime in the UK.

“The retailers we work with love the idea and fully support what we are doing to tackle a crime that has a detrimental effect on their businesses.

“We want to sow the seed that criminals might be going into shops in Stockport staffed by police officers and if caught will be arrested.”

Stores in the town centre and surrounding areas are supporting the operation by buying extra uniforms for the officers to wear so they can blend in.

Array of tactics

Chief inspector John Picton, of GMP’s Stockport district, said: “Stockport police use an array of different proactive and innovative tactics, ensuring officers are always on the front foot tackling crime.

“Theft offences including shoplifting are a priority for the district, the teams work together with a ‘can do’ attitude, arresting and prosecuting offenders.

“The town centre proactive operations continue with high-visibility patrols supported by colleagues in plain clothes and partner agencies to combat criminality.

“Theft and associated ASB is not tolerated in Stockport – it causes harm to our community, we are relentless in our pursuit of criminals.

“Our officers are extremely proud to provide an outstanding service to the community.”

GMP officers have been ‘working’ in shops across the town centre for the past few months to keep an eye out for shoplifters and the undercover operation will continue in 2024.

Tackling shoplifting remains a priority across GMP’s 10 divisions with a dedicated team tackling the issue in Bolton.

Tackling retail crime

Superintendent Cara Charlesworth, GMP’s shoplifting lead, said: “GMP is aware of the impact that shoplifting has, not only on the businesses but also on the staff that work there.

“We remain committed to tackling retail crime – all crimes will be investigated and taken seriously with emphasis on targeting prolific offenders to bring them to justice.

“GMP is working with partners in the retail community to improve technology to make reporting easier. We are also piloting a new crime reporting procedure to improve the standards of investigations”

“As confidence increases, we would expect to see an increase in crimes reported to the police.”

“Our officers use a range of crime reduction tactics on a daily basis including crime prevention advice and both high-visibility and plain-clothes policing operations.”

Feel Good family events to return to Rochdale in 2024

Free summer fun will be returning to Rochdale next year with Feel Good Family Picnic events staged.

The popular new event for families was launched in July, with more than 9,500 people attending events in Heywood, Middleton, Littleborough and Rochdale.

To coincide with the Summer Olympics in Paris, the theme for next year’s Feel Good Family Picnic will be the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

Line-up details will be announced in the spring but the event will include days of free fun activities, performances, music, sports, dance, theatre and shows for children of all ages in local parks and once again visitors will be encouraged to bring a picnic.

Councillor Janet Emsley said: “The support we had for this new event was absolutely superb and the feedback fantastic, so I am very excited to confirm it will be returning. Planning is at an early stage but activities will reflect our Olympics theme and we’ll be creating another amazing programme of free things to do.”

Dates and locations will be confirmed in the new year.

The Feel Good Family Picnic will be staged by the council in partnership with Without Walls, a consortium of festivals and arts organisations bringing fantastic outdoor arts to people in towns and cities across England.

It will be supported through the government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

World number six Nathan Aspinall is a dark horse for the title but will have to first get past Ricky Evans, who cruised past Simon Adams in his opener.

Aspinall has returned from a wrist injury that threatened his career in 2021, claiming the World Matchplay in July.

“I’m in the best headspace I’ve ever been in,” said the Stockport man.

“I won the second biggest tournament in the world, and I didn’t even feel like I played that well.

“I’m provisionally world number four going into 2024, and now I’m thinking ‘how good can I actually be at this game?’

“I know I have so many more gears to go through, but the only way I am going to get to that level is by working harder than I ever have before.”

He could have asked for an easier opener than to face Evans, who has won their last two meetings.

The world number 53 can be a tricky opponent on his day and goes into the clash in bullish mood.

“I’m not the favourite for this one. I’ve got nothing to lose,” he said.

“I’ve been beaten him a few times on the floor and had a few good Euro Tour games against him so if I play well I’ve got a chance.

“I’ve had a game on that stage again, and he knows he will have a game on his hands if I turn up.

“But you don’t know what Ricky Evans is going to turn up. I can go out and average 102, or 82, it is just one of them, but I do feel good.”

World number nine Jonny Clayton opens his campaign against Steve Lennon while the evergreen Steve Beaton, who will retire at the end of the season, could play his final game at the Worlds when he takes on Daryl Gurney.

Order of Play

Afternoon session (from 1230 UK time)
Kim Huybrechts v Richard Veenstra
Callan Rydz v Ricardo Pietreczko
Jonny Clayton v Steve Lennon
Daryl Gurney v Steve Beaton

Evening session (from 1900 UK time)
Ryan Searle v Tomoya Goto
Josh Rock v Berry van Peer
Stephen Bunting v Ryan Joyce
Nathan Aspinall v Ricky Evans

How to watch

The PDC World Championship is being screened on Sky Sports in the UK.
You can watch the afternoon session on Sky Sports Arena from 1230 and Sky Sports Main Event from 1500. The evening session is on Sky Sports Arena at 1900 and Sky Sports Main Event at 2030.

Predictions

Aspinall/Evans is an intriguing encounter. Aspinall has the pedigree but Evans the personal edge. Expect a tight contest with Aspinall edging it in five.
Elsewhere, there should be wins for Clayton, Gurney, Ryan Searle, Josh Rock and Stephen Bunting.

Why is vegetable Vodka so ap-pealing? We speak to its creator

There’s something very ap-pealing getting into the Christmas spirit…

The founder of Pod Pea Vodka – Manchester’s Becky Davies – has created the drink from 100% British peas, only grown in season AND the water, labels, glass (and even the sand to make the glass) are all UK-sourced.

In-keeping with the importance of locality, Pod’s peas are fermented, distilled and bottled all on the same site in Manchester, as the brand aims to minimise its environmental footprint while maximising taste.

Before founding Pod Pea Vodka, Becky had a background in hospitality and drinks, working as a bartender at Trio, Arc Inspirations, with a stint at Harvey Nics.

She said: “I opened Sandinista Manchester, then The Liars Club finishing my bartending career at MOJO. In 2013, I joined Mangrove Global and became a Sales Director by 2018.  During my time at Mangrove, I worked with a great portfolio of premium spirits and liqueurs which ignited a huge passion for the drinks industry.

“I founded Ten Locks in 2020, a spirits importer and distributor focusing on building premium, authentic spirit brands striving for positive change. Pod represents what our portfolio at Ten Locks aims to be and it has been hugely exciting!”

Why peas?

Bottle Peas Zoom Becky said: “Peas are amazing ‘nitrogen fixers’, which rejuvenate the soil, helping future crops thrive. Somerleyton Farm, where Pod’s peas are lovingly grown, take pride in its regenerative agriculture practices supplying the UK with ‘Planet Saving Food’.

“We also chose the humble pea for its ap-pealing flavour characteristics, its sustainable prowess and the fact that peas are quintessentially British, growing plentifully right here in the UK.”

Pod researched multiple crops, mainly legumes due to their nitrogen fixing qualities. However, Becky kept circling around the pea because they taste great. Her initial idea was to capture the flavours of a sugar snap pea – sweet, fresh, vegetal, and delicious.

Eat Well

Not only does Pod Pea Vodka taste fantastic, it’s also helping those in need this festive season.

Pod Pea Vodka values the three Ps; People, Purpose, Planet and for Christmas it is aiming to support a charity that it is passionate. Manchester charity, Eat Well, supports people sidelined by poverty across Greater Manchester, providing 1,000 meals every week.

Where to buy

Pod has plans in the pipeline to develop some new SKUs. So watch this space!

Pod is available to buy from Amazon, Master of Malt, Selfridges, Booths Food and more, with an RRP of £40 for a 70cl bottle.

The new spirit is also served at a number of bars and restaurants including Hawksmooor, Alchemist, The Ivy Manchester, Wolf at the Door and Tariff & Dale amongst others.

The bars have come up with some really innovative cocktails using Pod, for example Hawksmoor are serving one of Pod’s signature cocktails Peas & Q’s with Pod Pea Vodka with pear, elderflower, mint and soda water as an elegant spritz.

Club World Cup final: Manchester City boss Guardiola ready for Fluminense test

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is wary of a Fluminense side he expects to “play in a typical Brazilian style” in tomorrow’s Club World Cup final in Saudi Arabia.

City have spent the days following their semi-final victory over Urawa Reds studying the Copa Libertadores champions and Guardiola says his players had better be prepared to work hard to combat the South Americans’ fluid game.

Manchester United committed to UEFA despite ECJ ruling

He said: “We try in the hours after [our last] game to see Fluminense as much as possible – looking at the quality they have. They have five, six or seven players more than 30 years old so that means they can control their emotions perfectly.

“They play a typical Brazilian style of the 1970s, 80s and the early 90s like when Brazil won the World Cup in 1994. Lots of short passes, combining really good, one v one but also physically demanding. We have to be aware how much they will try to run in behind, and be resilient in [dealing with] that.

“The way they play demands a lot of effort [from us]. The way they play we have never faced before. They move a lot from side to side, so we have to impose our own rhythm and possession game as much as possible.”

Guardiola is chasing history as the first coach to win the event four times and he is confident his players are ready for the challenge.

He added: “The players are ready and they know how important it is.

“I know exactly the talent and the quality of Fluminense and what they can do. They have beaten teams from Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay.”
