Hojlund describes relief after finally netting for Manchester United in the Premier League

Rasmus Hojlund described himself as a “lucky and happy man” after finally breaking his Premier League duck in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa last night.

The Denmark striker volleyed past Emi Martinez in the Villa goal with eight minutes to go to complete a remarkable comeback that had looked unlikely when United trailed Unai Emery’s men 2-0 at half-time.

Hojlund scored five goals in United’s unsuccessful Champions League campaign but had to wait 15 appearances before finally netting in the English top flight.

His emotional celebration in front of the Stretford End showed what it meant.

He told the Guardian: “There is a relief to score my first Premier League goal, but it isn’t like I haven’t scored goals; I’ve scored five in the Champions League.

You can see the relief in my celebration as well, but also the feeling of being the match-winner and getting the three points at home against a good opponent. I’m a lucky and happy man.”

Hojlund has come in for some fierce criticism despite playing in a team struggling to create many meaningful chances.

“I try to focus on my game every day,” he added. “I don’t listen to the media, if I did, I would be crazy. I just focus on my game, focus on winning football matches for Manchester United, focus on becoming better in front of goal and all the other attributes as well.”

PDC World Darts Championship, Day 11: Preview, how to watch, order of play and predictions

The Main Event

Tournament favourite Luke Humphries returns to the Alexandra Palace stage tomorrow night vowing to improve on his opening performance at the PDC World Darts Championship.

Humphries has enjoyed a stellar 2023, winning the World Grand Prix, the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championship Finals. He beat Lee Evans 3-0 in his second-round match but the scoreline flattered Humphries with his opponent only hitting five of 24 shots at a double.

“I was not at my best but the most important thing is it felt good, and the first game is always the toughest,” Humphries told Sky Sports.

“I am through to the next round and I won’t play the same in the next round. I am not disappointed because I won 3-0 which is what I wanted.

“I feel like that is the hardest game in the whole tournament to get through, so I’m happy and in the next game I will be so much better than that.”

Humphries plays Ricardo Pietreczko, who has beaten Mikuru Suzuki and Callan Rydz to reach the last 32.

Also in action tomorrow is Stephen Bunting, who leads the averages so far having hit 107.28 to see off Ryan Joyce.

Bunting said: “To have the highest average going into Christmas is fantastic, but it doesn’t win you the title, so I know the hard work starts now and I’ll be raring to go after the break.”

The 2021 semi-finalist plays Florian Hempel while Gerwyn Price opens the evening session by taking on veteran Northern Irishman Brendan Dolan.

Order of play (all matches in round three)

Afternoon session (from 1230 UK time)
Florian Hempel v Stephen Bunting
Joe Cullen v Ryan Searle
Ross Smith v Chris Dobey

Evening session (from 1900 UK time)
Gerwyn Price v Brendan Dolan
Luke Humphries v Ricardo Pietreczko
Ricky Evans v Daryl Gurney

How to watch

The PDC World Championship is being screened on Sky Sports in the UK.
You can watch the afternoon session on Sky Sports Arena and Sky Sports Main Event from 1230. The evening session is on Sky Sports Arena and Sky Sports Main Event at 1900.

Predictions

Humphries is likely to improve markedly on his opening performance and if he gets on a roll, and the crowd gets on Pietreczko’s back, it could be a very one-sided encounter. Go for Humphries in straight sets.
Bunting should prove too strong for Hempel, and Price will have too much for Dolan but the other games are close to call.
Gurney ought to edge out Evans, and I’d pick Searle and Dobey to also go through.

Drivers warned over hazardous conditions as storm sets in

0

Motorists are being cautioned about potentially dangerous conditions as Storm Gerrit sweeps across the country tomorrow.

Anticipated to have widespread impact in the UK, various yellow wind and rain warnings are currently in effect.

The AA has issued a warning, advising individuals to prepare for extended travel durations due to the challenging weather conditions.

Storm Gerrit is projected to make its entry from the west early on Wednesday, progressing through the country throughout the day.

Yellow wind warnings are active along the southern coast of England, in north-west England, Wales, most of Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Windy

The Met Office has indicated that wind-prone areas may experience gusts ranging from 50-60mph, escalating to 70mph on elevated terrain and exposed coastlines. The central section of the UK remains the only region without a wind warning.

Heavy rainfall is also anticipated, with an estimated 60mm expected in parts of Northern Ireland and up to 90mm on higher ground in Wales.

Wintry conditions are on the horizon, with a yellow snow warning covering a significant portion of Scotland. Storm Gerrit marks the seventh named storm in the ongoing UK storm season, which commenced in September and extends until August next year. Notably, this storm holds the earliest “G” designation since the storm-naming system was introduced in 2015.

This weather event follows closely on the heels of Storm Pia, which, coinciding with strike action, caused disruptions for holiday travelers. The aftermath included overturned lorries, trees colliding with houses, and power line damage affecting rail services across the country. Storm Pia, named by the Danish Met Office, created significant challenges in Denmark.

With a focus on safety, the AA encourages Wednesday travellers to maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front due to wet conditions that may prolong braking distances.

Additionally, drivers are cautioned about the sudden impact of high winds in exposed areas.

Looking for a country worth investing in? Check out Latvia!

0

Financial investment is considered to be the best form of making a profit and a key to long-term stability and financial prosperity.

When looking for Europe-based countries, more and more people are drawn to Latvia and its options, as it shows significant improvements in its economic development.

Latvia is a part of the Baltic region and is situated within Europe’s Schengen Area. Latvia is one of the countries that has taken the course of development and growth.

It successfully combines the Western cultural heritage and the traces of Soviet architecture; more than half of the territory is covered with forests and parks, with numerous trails for an active rest; its transportation system prides itself on excellent coverage, linking all the parts of the country.

Let’s look into the reasons to invest in Latvia, and learn the available options.

Why invest in Latvia?

  1. Strategic location

Latvia has a very beneficial location – between Scandinavia, the European Union, and Asia ( relatively close). Such a cross-point location provides access to huge markets, with all the possibilities for trade. It hosts companies that collaborate with the EU market, as well as the eastern neighbors.

2. Transportation infrastructure

Riga, Latvia’s capital (pictured)  is a well-known home for AirBaltic, which offers more than 70 destinations worldwide. It also hosts airlines like Ryanair, Wizzair, Lufthansa, Finnair, and Turkish Airlines. The cargo capacity of the airport is 156,000 tons/year, and the tourist capacity is getting higher every year, with 5 million people checked in by the end of 2022. The airport is developing toward expansion, which will help to boost the tourist and transportation sectors, as well as create a multitude of employment options.

There are also three international ports in Latvia, located on the Baltic Sea coast – Riga, Liepaja, and Ventspils, which in turn are connected to the nation’s railway, road, and pipeline network.

3. Trade opportunities

Being a member of the Schengen area and the European Union, Latvia takes advantage of free trade on the global market. Considering the positive influence of trade on economic development, Latvia has standardized the customs and border policies, to process all the interactions faster and more efficiently.

4. Export

Considering the beneficial location of the country, local businesses develop towards expansion in domestic and international environments. There are numerous opportunities to cooperate with the Nordic countries and offer European customers goods and services.

5. Labour cost

Investors who enter the Latvian market will find no lack of a highly qualified and well-skilled workforce; though, the average salary is rather low, compared to the average European.

The employees are typically motivated and are willing to work long hours to earn a better financial position. Besides, the majority of the job market applicants are multilingual, which can let the business owner extend their geo influence.

6.Taxation

The business-related taxes in Latvia are rather business-friendly, compared to those of countries with strong economies like Germany, France, Spain, etc.

The taxes are applied to any company that is registered in Latvia as a part of an international business or a locally-functioning business. The companies-residents are taxed by considering their worldwide income, the companies non-residents are taxed only by their Latvian-based incomes.

Overall, Latvia has one of the lowest rates of taxes in Europe – 15%, being applied to the annual profits.

The corporate income tax is also applicable to capital gains, and property sales; yet non-applicable to the capital gains from selling shares.

There is also a simplified version of income tax functioning, applied for the business whose functioning doesn’t exceed 12 months.

7. Developing economyThe Latvian economy is still developing, however, recent years have shown significant improvements in economic affairs. Due to the favorable geolocation, it benefits mostly from transit services, agriculture, wood processing and carpentry, machinery manufacturing, building materials, and renewable energy.

Investors will get good profits when pouring money into these sectors.

8. Tourist sectorThe tourist sector is one of the best-developed ones in the country’s economy, partially given to its cross-country location, which works as a connecting place for a variety of destinations. While having other countries as a final destination, more and more tourists go for a 3-4-day stopover in Riga to explore its beauty and entertainment options.

Latvia is a country that has shown significant economic growth in recent years, which started to attract more investors to its market, and it is working towards improving its position. Its quick development in trade and transportation makes it one of the best European hubs for setting up a business and thus, getting a significant profit.

If you are still in two minds, visit Latvia, and see all the opportunities firsthand.

Rochdale Road Medical Centre and Healing Humanity Host Festive Christmas Lunch

0

The Rochdale Road Medical Centre, in collaboration with the charity Healing Humanity, recently organised a Christmas Lunch for their patients and local residents. This heartwarming event was specially designed for several isolated, elderly, and lonely individuals identified by the Charity and Practice, many of whom had not ventured outside their homes for years.

Jackie McCann, the Charity Lead, together with Dr. Salman Shahid, spearheaded this initiative. After considering various ideas, they settled on hosting a luncheon to bring people together. To make this happen, they enlisted the support of other local charities. Demesne Community Centre generously offered to host the event, decorating the venue in a festive and welcoming manner. Bowlee Community Centre provided volunteers to serve the guests, while Wellens Funeral Directors and Status 4 All contributed significantly towards the expenses. Additionally, Tesco Middleton donated essential items like tablecloths, serviettes, and crackers, with Healing Humanity supplying the food.

The guests were treated to a delightful three-course Christmas meal. Transportation was arranged for those who needed it, and the day began with a charming performance by children from Buttons and Bows nursery. The festivities concluded with everyone joining in for a carol singalong and a special visit from Santa.

The event received outstanding feedback from all attendees, who expressed immense enjoyment and gratitude. Several guests sent thank-you notes to the surgery, praising the wonderful day and even suggesting a similar gathering in the summer.

This Christmas Lunch exemplified true community spirit, with various groups coming together to provide a day of joy and companionship to those who might otherwise spend the festive season alone or without a celebratory meal.

Tribute paid to mum and son killed days before Christmas

The family of a parent and son who died in a road traffic collision in Oldham days before Christmas have paid their own tribute.

Clair (42) and Sam (15) sadly passed away as a result of their injuries at the scene of a serious road traffic on Ripponden Road.

Officers are still appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following the incident at around 4pm on December 23.

Police had received reports of two vehicles near Denshaw, being in collision.

A 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody for questioning.

Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have footage, including dashcam, mobile phone or CCTV/doorbell footage from the area in the moments before the collision took place.

Tribute

Their family have said: “Clair was a smart, loving parent, daughter and sister who would do anything for anyone.

“Prior to the pandemic, Clair worked at the Bolton Theatre, supporting those facing Mental Health challenges.

“She loved going to pottery class every week and was such a creative person and she could go from a lump of clay to making whatever she put her mind to.”

“Sam was in Year 11, looking forward to studying music at college; he loved to sing and to play the drums. Listening to music was one of Sam’s favourite things to do, he was always around the house with his headphones on.

“When Sam wasn’t listening to music, he could be found in a world of his own playing on his computer. Sam’s family meant the world to him; he was a brother and son whose loss will leave a hole in our family forever.”

They added that Christmas without Sam and Clair would be immensely difficult for everybody who knew them both.

PC Thomas Johnson, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts continue to remain with their family who are being supported by officers at this really difficult time.

“If you can help or have any information that may assist our enquiries, then please contact our Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting incident 2304 of 23/12/2023.

South Africa v India 1st Test: Preview, team news, squads and prediction

The State of Play

Having seen their young white-ball sides achieve success in this month’s T20I and One-Day International series in South Africa, India’s Test team will look to follow in their footsteps when the first of two matches begins in Centurion on Boxing Day.

Sanju Samson’s maiden ODI century made him the hero as the Proteas were beaten by 78 runs in Paarl on Thursday, but India will be rolling out the big guns for the red-ball leg of this tour, with several stars returning after being rested in the build-up to Christmas.

Rohit Sharma will captain the team on his first international outing since last month’s World Cup final heartbreak, while Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer also return to the fold.

India have lost their last two Tests against South Africa after winning the previous four, though they will hope the fact that their last red-ball victory over the Proteas came in a match starting on Boxing Day 2021 is a good omen.

For the hosts, this series will be their last with stalwart batsman and former Test captain Dean Elgar, who will retire from international cricket upon the conclusion of the second match in Cape Town.

Temba Bavuma returns to lead the hosts as they seek a positive start to their new ICC World Test Championship cycle. The skipper was rested throughout the limited-overs leg of India’s tour, which saw the Proteas lose three of five completed contests overall.

Will a change of format bring South Africa’s fans some much-needed festive cheer?

Team News

South Africa are hoping Kagiso Rabada will be available after a heel injury forced him to skip domestic first-class fixtures in advance of this series. Seamer Nandre Burger could make his Test debut after impressing across the white-ball leg of the tour, while David Bedingham and Tristan Stubbs are also hoping to make their red-ball bows.

Kohli returned to India late last week, though it was thought likely that he would rejoin the squad for the Test series. Ishan Kishan has withdrawn for personal reasons, with KS Bharat coming in as his replacement.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami has been sidelined by an ankle injury, while Ruturaj Gaikwad will miss out with a finger problem.

Test Squads

South Africa: Temba Bavuma (c), David Bedingham, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Tony de Zorzi, Dean Elgar, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Keegan Petersen, Kagiso Rabada, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne (wk).

India: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (vc), Prasidh Krishna, KS Bharat (wk).

When and how to watch

The two Test matches will both be shown live by Sky Sports either side of New Year’s Day. Viewers in the United Kingdom can catch all the action by tuning in to Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket from 07:00 on December 26.

Prediction

Unfortunately for the home fans, the return of big names including Rohit, Gill and Kohli could be enough to see India continue their unbeaten start to this World Test Championship cycle.

We’re backing Kohli to make the difference in the first Test, with the right-hander already boasting a century and a fifty across India’s two completed red-ball matches in the 2023-25 cycle (against the West Indies). The 35-year-old has 719 runs in 14 innings when playing Test matches in South Africa, and he could play a prominent role in another morale-boosting victory for the tourists.

Australia v Pakistan, 2nd Test: Preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

Australia couldn’t have scripted a better 2023, having retained the Ashes on English soil before a World Cup win in India.

Pat Cummins’ side are flying and they showed no sign of easing up with a crushing 360-run win in Perth in the first Test. Key to that was David Warner who answered his critics in what is his final Test series with a brilliant 164 that laid the foundations for Australia’s success.

Pakistan will hope, and expect, the MCG pitch to be more docile than the spicy track they encountered in Perth that played perfectly into the hosts’ hands.

Any kind of result in Melbourne will be viewed as a positive and keep the series alive before the teams head to Sydney.

Team News

Pakistan could make a change behind the stumps. The experienced Sarfaraz Ahmed struggled in Perth while Mohammad Rizwan impressed during the hastily arranged two-day practice match against Victoria in Melbourne. Rizwan looked in good nick, hitting 50 off just 70 balls before retiring.

The tourists will have to make one change with Khurram Shahzad ruled out of the remainder of the series with a side problem. It further depletes a bowling attack already missing the injured Naseem Shah while Haris Rauf opted to play in the Big Bash instead of the Test series.

Australia are likely to go with an unchanged XI.

Expected line-ups

Australia: Warner, Khawaja, Labuschagne, Smith, Head, Marsh, Carey (wk), Starc, Cummins (c), Lyon, Hazlewood

Pakistan:  Shafique, Imam, Masood (c), Babar, Shakeel, Rizwan (wk), Salman, Ashraf, Jamal, Afridi, Ali

What they said

Australia captain Pat Cummins on their first Test win
“Great start to the summer, everything fell into place. We’ve played a lot of cricket, so the build-up was very chilled and relaxed. No hiccups this week, it’s all gone to plan.”

Pakistan batter Saud Shakeel on playing at the MCG
“The matches in Melbourne, I’ve seen it’s not that hard to bat on. I’m really looking forward to this Test match. The boys are feeling good; it was a very healthy practice session and the players look in good nick. I think you’ll get the chance to see a complete turnaround, especially in this Melbourne Test.
“It’s a unique feeling and the excitement of this particular Test match is like no other. It’s a huge opportunity for us, still.”

When and how to watch

The match takes place at the MCG in Melbourne, starting at 2330 on Christmas Day. You can watch it in the UK on TNT Sports 3 with the coverage also starting at 2330.

Prediction

It has been a stunning 2023 for Australia. Expect them to finish it in style by taking an unassailable 2-0 series lead against Pakistan.
