There’s more to come, says Manchester City midfielder De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne feels he is “still a little bit away” from his best form despite making an impressive return from a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

The Manchester City midfielder missed five months with a hamstring injury sustained at Burnley on the opening day but has sparkled since coming back in early January.

Martinez set for two-month absence in blow for Manchester United

City have won each of the five games De Bruyne has appeared in, although the Belgian believes there is still more to come.

Speaking after last night’s 3-1 victory at Brentford, he told Standard Sport: “I’m happy because everything has been going so well. I came back and I feel good.

“Every game is getting better and better. Sometimes I still feel like I’m a little bit away, but I’m doing what I need to do, so I’m not really too worried about that. It’s just getting match fitness.”

City’s win moved them to within two points of leaders Liverpool – beaten at Arsenal on Sunday – with a game in hand.

Pep Guardiola’s men are Premier League title favourites as they look to create history by becoming the first team to win four successive top-flight crowns.

De Bruyne is understandably cautious, however, with the top five separated by just seven points.

He added: “There are so many teams there.

“Liverpool and Arsenal are there with us, but I’d say even [Aston] Villa and Tottenham are close. There’s a little pressure anyway to do well, but there’s no point looking at what’s going to happen in two months.

“We need to win games now and try to enjoy it. We know what we need to do. The pressure is always there, but we’re ready to fight again until the end.”

City defender Nathan Ake believes the win at Brentford, which came courtesy of a Phil Foden hat-trick, was a big step in the right direction.

The Netherlands international said: “Today was very important. From now on, we’re in the stage of the season where every game is massive. Today was a very big step.

“It was business as usual. There’s so long to go, but we know it’s in our hands.

“It’s small margins. We’re still not on top of the table — we still have to play that game in hand — but that’s a very good step forward. We keep on fighting.”

Scotland lose key men for rest of Six Nations

Scotland have suffered a major blow with lock Richie Gray and back rower Luke Crosbie ruled out for the remainder of the Six Nations.

Gray has a bicep injury while Crosbie is suffering from a shoulder problem – the pair sustaining the knocks during the dramatic 27-26 win over Wales at the weekend.

Full-back Blair Kinghorn is also unlikely to be ready to face France at Murrayfield on Saturday due to a knee injury.

There is better news, however, with Grant Gilchrist back from suspension and Rory Darge expected to be fit.

WP Nel and Darcy Graham’s return from injury will step up a notch this week when they start training again with Edinburgh.

Six-week Martyn’s Law consultation launched

0

Proposed legislation aims to enhance preparedness for terrorist attacks while ensuring the protection of the public without imposing undue burdens on smaller businesses.

Named in honour of Martyn Hett, who lost his life in the tragic Manchester Arena attack of 2017, Martyn’s Law mandates premises to undertake necessary yet proportionate measures, tailored to their capacity, to safeguard the public.

His mum, Figen Murray, has been campaigning for the legislation and received an OBE for her efforts. She has also graduated with a Master’s in counter-terrorism and spoken to 20,000 children about radicalisation.

Under the law, it is proposed that premises will be categorised into ‘standard tier’ (capacity of 100-799) or ‘enhanced tier’ (capacity of 800 or more).

Consultation open

A consultation on the revised approach to the standard tier aims to gather feedback to ensure the new regulations do not overly burden smaller enterprises while maintaining public safety.

The consultation is open to the public until March 18. It particularly seeks views from those responsible for smaller premises, especially those in the community and voluntary sector.

Security minister, Tom Tugendhat, said: “Simple steps save lives. Martyn’s Law will help protect the British public from terrorism, and make sure public premises are better prepared in the event of a terror attack.

“I want to make sure that our proposals are balanced and proportionate. That’s why our updated approach is easy to implement, and better tailored to individual businesses.

“I’d encourage smaller premises to share their feedback on these crucial changes. Your feedback will help ensure that Martyn’s Law stands the test of time.”

Updated requirements

The updated requirements for smaller businesses, set out in the consultation, are centred around outcomes rather than processes. For example, it will remove the requirement to complete any specific terrorism training.

Instead, those responsible for these premises will be asked to put in place procedures such as evacuation and lock-ins in the event of an attack.

The new ‘reasonably practicable’ approach is better suited to the wide range of organisations that will be within the scope of standard tier because they will assess and implement procedures that are suitable to their individual circumstances.

This aligns with other regulatory regimes, such as health and safety, which require reasonably practicable steps.

A Martyn’s Law regulator will be established to monitor compliance and advise premises within scope of the legislation. Premises within standard tier will be required to notify the regulator that they are within the scope of this legislation.

This revised approach is designed to be low-to-no financial cost, with associated costs largely driven by the time taken to communicate them to staff.

Following the conclusion of the consultation process, the Bill will be introduced as soon as Parliamentary time allows.

The consultation is available on gov.uk (Martyn’s Law: standard tier consultation – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

Former cheerleading coach jailed for child sex offences

0

A former cheerleading coach has been jailed after being found guilty of sexual offences against children.

Tom Walsh (37) of Shaw Lane, Prescot was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court yesterday, after he was convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse against three girls, as well as possession and distribution of child abuse images.

He was sentenced to 15 years in jail with a further 5 years on license. He also received a lifetime sexual harm prevention order and was registered as a sex offender for life.

Walsh was found guilty of 28 charges relating to sexual offences against children which took place between 2011 and 2020.

Walsh was a cheerleader and met two of his victims whilst he was coaching, whilst the third he groomed online.

The offences were committed in Manchester and Liverpool, although Walsh also communicated with a number of girls across the UK.

Covert officers

An investigation into his offending was launched after covert officers communicated with Walsh online. As enquiries progressed, Walsh’s sexual interest in children – young girls – became apparent.

Walsh was arrested in August 2020 on suspicion of possession and distribution of child abuse images.

The investigation subsequently uncovered numerous indecent images of children saved on Walsh’s device and messages between himself and a number of victims.

He used Snapchat to communicate with his victims and evidence of screen recording software was recovered which showed how the defendant had saved child abuse images and his conversations with victims.

A number of victims were identified, including the three girls who were victims of child sexual abuse.

Two further victims, who were teenagers at the time and came contact with Walsh through cheerleading, were identified during the investigation.

Manipulative, predatory and exploitative

Detective chief inspector Suzanne Keenaghan said: “This jail sentence would not have been possible without the courage and strength of the victims and the tireless efforts of the entire investigation team.

“This was an incredibly difficult investigation, but I am pleased the defendant will now finally answer for his despicable actions. Walsh was placed in a position of authority and he professed to be a father figure and friend to his victims, but he was their abuser.

“He was manipulative, predatory and exploitative and used typical grooming behaviour to befriend children who were going through difficult times and were vulnerable. He betrayed their trust and inflicted life-long trauma onto children for his own sexual gratification.

“For one victim, cheerleading was supposed to be a safe space but Walsh used it as his hunting ground. He has never shown remorse or recognition for what he has done.

“It’s entirely possible Walsh’s offending could have gone on unchecked and harmed more children were it not for the proactive work of the ROCU team who carried out a covert investigation and brought his despicable crimes to light.

“I also want to commend our own officer DC Ceri Martin who went above and beyond what was required of her to identify and meet with the victims and spent months earning their trust and supporting them to report what had happened to police. It is in large part thanks to her efforts that the victims finally have justice and I am so proud of her and the brilliant people like her that we have in this unit who are doing their utmost to protect children.

“I hope this case also reminds parents and young people of the dangers. Abusers can be people you know and trust and they can take advantage of that trust. I would therefore urge parents and teachers to speak to children and young people about the signs of abuse and spread awareness of how to stay safe online.

“Sexual abuse is never the fault of the victim and no one should feel the need to suffer in silence. It is never too late to tell someone and seek help.”

You can also report information and crimes on the GMP website (www.gmp.police.uk) using the ‘report’ tool. Alternatively, you can report information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Launch of DoTrust Complete by Department of Trust: A Milestone in Safe Gambling Innovation

Department of Trust has made a significant leap in the realm of responsible gambling with the introduction of DoTrust Complete, a first-of-its-kind platform dedicated to comprehensive and unobtrusive financial risk evaluations throughout the customer journey in gambling.

This landmark development is further highlighted by the partnership with Rank Group plc, a giant in the UK’s gambling sector, as the premier client of this avant-garde service.

In the past, UK gambling operators faced the arduous task of employing multiple services for financial risk, affordability, anti-money laundering, and compliance with safer gambling regulations. This approach was fraught with complexity, increased costs, a degraded player experience, and substantial fines for non-compliance. The expected reform in the Gambling Act by the UK government, which will likely introduce more stringent requirements for player vulnerability checks at even lower spending levels, will amplify the need for seamless and accurate assessments.

DoTrust Complete addresses this need by offering a unified platform where operators can conduct all necessary checks using the most advanced public and proprietary data, some of which is being introduced to the gambling industry for the first time. It also allows for the customisation of risk assessment methodologies and provides comprehensive audit trails to ensure regulatory compliance and proportionality.

Michael Byrne, COO of DoTrust, shared his excitement: “We are delighted to officially launch Complete ahead of the expected change in regulation this year. Operators now have a reliable, comprehensive and industry-first service they can rely on to meet all current and future requirements. Complete reduces friction for customers and increases certainty and efficiency for operators.”

Liam Smith, Director of Customer Operations at Rank Interactive, also expressed his enthusiasm: “Rank has always been at the forefront of consumer protection and are constantly seeking ways to improve our player experience within a safe environment. DoTrust Complete is the first tool we have found that has been specifically developed for gambling operators. The efficiency and degree of control which Complete gives is impressive and we are excited to leverage these capabilities in building our business.”

Guardiola: Foden in the best form of his career

Pep Guardiola believes Phil Foden is enjoying his best season to date with Manchester City, with the England international continuing his fine form with a hat-trick to fire the champions past Brentford on Monday.

City fell behind during the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Neal Maupay racing clear from Mark Flekken’s goal-kick before rolling his finish past Ederson.

However, Foden took control of the game from there as he starred in a central midfield role, latching onto Ethan Pinnock’s wayward header to equalise in first-half stoppage time.

Foden then stooped to head in Kevin De Bruyne’s inswinging cross eight minutes into the second half, before Erling Haaland’s lay-off sent him through to clinch his second career hat-trick and wrap up a 3-1 win for City.

Foden now has 15 goal involvements in the Premier League this season (eight goals, seven assists), putting him just two shy of his previous best in a single campaign in the competition (17 in 2022-23).

Guardiola heaped praise on the City matchwinner in his post-match interview with Sky Sports, saying: “He played I don’t know how many games already for City.

“He’s a guy who has played lots of different positions and in these games, which are so tight, he has the ability in the pockets and in the centre of goal.

“He likes to arrive in the box, and when Brentford defend deep, it’s so difficult. Having players in these positions is so important.

“He has a sense for the goal. He loves to move into the 18-yard box and has a lot of weapons. I think he’s playing his best season since we’ve been together.

“The goals and the assists from him, playing in this central position, have been amazing.”

While Haaland turned provider for Foden’s third goal on his return to City’s starting lineup, the Norwegian endured a frustrating outing in front of goal and was denied by one fine one-on-one save from Flekken in the first half.

Guardiola has no concerns about Haaland requiring time to get up to speed after almost two months out with a foot fracture, saying Brentford make life difficult for every striker they face.

“He’s always an incredible threat. He had a chance, he had the assist for the third goal and he created space for others from his position,” Guardiola said.

“I don’t think there is a striker in the world who plays against Brentford, with the way they defend their box, and is comfortable.

“But he’s back, he played nearly 90 minutes after two months off. For the rhythm and everything, it was so important.”

While City are now within touching distance of Liverpool at the top of the table, Brentford remain 15th and sit just three points clear of the relegation zone.

Boss Thomas Frank, however, is certain things will pick up for the Bees in the coming weeks.

“We know that we can get a win against any team in the division, we’ve shown it before,” he told BBC Sport. “We’ve had good games against City and Tottenham.

“The performances have been good, we’ve got key players back and I see it as a matter of time before the points come.”

Foden enjoying central role as hat-trick guides Manchester City past Brentford

Phil Foden is hoping to get more minutes in a central midfield role after his hat-trick guided Manchester City to a 3-1 win over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

City had the chance to move within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool with a game in hand on Monday, but they fell behind midway through the first half as Neal Maupay latched onto Mark Flekken’s goal-kick to slot past Ederson.

It looked like being a frustrating outing for City as Flekken made save after save in the Brentford goal, but Foden scored just his second career treble to guide the champions to victory.

Foden took advantage of an Ethan Pinnock mistake to score his first before half-time, before a glancing header and a composed one-on-one finish secured City’s win after the break.

Foden’s hat-trick came from a central midfield position as Bernardo Silva and Julian Alvarez started in the wide areas, and the England international hopes Pep Guardiola might use him in that role more often in the future.

“I’m delighted with how I’m playing at the moment. I’m playing more inside, which is where I want to be,” Foden told Sky Sports after the game.

“It’s probably the best form I’ve had in a City shirt for a long time, consistently. Long may that continue.

“It would help if I played one position and learned that position every game but I’m a person who adapts and plays where I’m needed.

“I’m enjoying playing anywhere in the middle. That’s where I see myself. Hopefully I can play more in the middle.”

City lost home and away against Brentford last season and could have been in for another difficult game when Maupay put the Bees ahead, but Foden was proud of how City stuck to their task and fought back.

“We know the quality they have. Ivan Toney is one of the best at winning aerial duels… last year, they caused us problems so we knew the threat they had,” Foden said.

“We stayed calm and trusted our ability. We’re delighted with the outcome of the game. We had to remain patient, we controlled the game and created a lot of chances.”

Brentford 1-3 Manchester City: Foden treble guides champions to comeback win

Phil Foden scored a hat-trick as Manchester City came from behind to beat Brentford 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Monday, moving within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

City dominated the first half and drew save after save from Mark Flekken in the Brentford goal, but the champions fell behind when Neal Maupay raced through to finish from a goal-kick 21 minutes in.

However, City’s superiority finally told on the stroke of half-time as Ethan Pinnock’s mistake teed Foden up for a close-range finish, and the England international doubled his tally with a well-taken header shortly after the interval.

After a brief spell of Brentford pressure, Foden make City’s win safe with 70 minutes gone. Erling Haaland turned provider on his return to the starting lineup after recovering from a foot injury, the striker’s neat lay-off sending Foden through to side-foot home.

Following Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday, the result takes City to within two points of the league-leading Reds, and Pep Guardiola’s side still possess a game in hand – also against Brentford at the Etihad Stadium later this month.

City laid siege to Flekken’s goal early on, with two long-range strikes from Julian Alvarez testing the Dutchman before he made a full-stretch save to keep Kyle Walker’s 30-yard piledriver out.

But the Brentford goalkeeper had an assist to his name as his team went ahead against the run of play. Ivan Toney cleverly let Flekken’s long goal-kick run through the heart of City’s defence, meaning Maupay was onside as he raced clear to slot past Ederson.

Flekken then made two huge saves to preserve Brentford’s lead as City ramped up the pressure, spreading himself to deny Haaland when the striker was one-on-one then tipping Josko Gvardiol’s right-footed strike wide.

Brentford were fortunate to see Flekken spill Foden’s drive wide of his post as half-time approached, but their luck ran out in first-half stoppage time. Pinnock misdirected his header from Kevin De Bruyne’s lofted pass, allowing Foden to take a touch before beating Flekken from close range.

Foden had his second just eight minutes into the second half, stooping to meet De Bruyne’s inswinging cross and glance a header into the bottom-right corner, beyond Flekken’s despairing dive.

Brentford refused to lie down, though; a great last-ditch block from Ruben Dias denied Bees skipper Christian Norgaard a quickfire equaliser before Toney sent an acrobatic volley spiralling over.

But any hopes of a Brentford comeback were extinguished when Foden completed his hat-trick with 20 minutes to play, taking Haaland’s lay-off in his stride before advancing into the box and finishing calmly past Flekken.

Ederson had a lucky escape when he raced out of his area and clattered Pinnock from a deep Brentford free-kick late on, but City played out the closing stages in relative comfort, going close to a fourth goal when De Bruyne side-footed wide from Jeremy Doku’s cross.
