Female apprentice encourages more women to join the construction industry

Rosie Coyle thinks more females should consider careers in the construction industry and tells us why, this National Apprenticeship Week.

The 20-year-old from Preston (pictured) has had a long-held passion for building and construction and decided to pursue an apprenticeship with McCarthy Stone – a manager and developer of retirement communities.

After almost a year and a half with the company, Rosie has made the move to Jessiefield Court – a retirement development being created in Didsbury.

Apprenticeship

Rosie started her level 4 construction site supervisor apprenticeship in September 2022 after completing her A-levels, and is loving the variety of the course and the different perspectives it brings.

Now she will join the senior site team to oversee the construction of the 26 one and two-bedroom low-maintenance apartments on Spath Road.

Rosie said: “I changed my mind a lot when I was younger, about what I wanted to do with my career. I’d been around building sites in the past and had been fascinated by the process. I began looking into apprenticeships and it became clear this was the right path for me.

“As a girl at a very academically focused school, a career in construction was perhaps an unusual choice – but I’m loving it and I’ve no regrets.

“I love the fact that in the construction industry you can see the difference and the
progress you are making. You can experience the complete lifespan of a project, from acquisition of a piece of land, right through to completion and new homeowners moving in; and when you’re on site you can see the build progress day by day.”

Rosie thinks more female students would consider a career in construction if they knew about all the options available.

She added: “I have come across lots of women during my training who are hugely successful within the field. I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship and would encourage other girls to consider construction as a worthwhile career. There are so many diverse roles that you can do and so much opportunity to build on these skills and qualifications.”

Once complete, Jessiefield Court will consist of Retirement Living apartments with state-of-the-art facilities designed to enable the over 60s to enjoy maximum independence during retirement.

Oldham Active launches ‘new look’ gyms following £750k investment

Oldham Active (Oldham Community Leisure) has launched its ‘new look’ gyms following a £750,000 investment.

Refurbishments of Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, Failsworth Sports Centre, Oldham
Leisure Centre and Royton Leisure Centre were successfully completed on schedule at
the end of 2023 thanks to OCL, the charitable trust that operates leisure facilities in the borough.

Works included a substantial upgrade to the gym space at all four of the leisure centres, including a total replacement of the cardiovascular equipment by Oldham Active’s partner, the market-leading fitness equipment provider, TechnoGym.

Each of the indoor cycling studios have benefitted from either new or upgraded bikes
and there is also a new, fully interactive gym floor cycle zone at Oldham Leisure Centre.

In addition, following requests from customers, a state-of-the-art sauna is a new
addition to Royton Leisure Centre. Guests can now also enjoy public high speed wifi which has been introduced at all centres.

Brookson Group pledges to fund new apprenticeship scheme for small businesses

Brookson Group – a compliance and services provider for the temporary workforce – will provide £900,000 to the recently launched FCSA Levy Network

The government-backed scheme has been set up by the Freelancer and Contractor Services Association (FCSA) to empower small businesses to set up the apprenticeships that are required to upskill their workforce, helping to level the playing field between them and bigger organisations.

Brookson joins the network that will use its apprenticeship levy funds to support and fund apprenticeships for other companies, reinvesting into the growth and development of the workforce.

The network is open to any businesses in the supply chains of FCSA accredited members, recruiter partners and business partners.

It received pledges exceeding £1.2 million within 24 hours after its official release, greatly boosted by the latest pledge from Brookson.

Emotional Rahm already missing PGA Tour events following LIV switch

Jon Rahm has no regrets at joining LIV despite admitting he is already feeling “emotional” about missing events on the PGA Tour.

The Spaniard defected to the Saudi-backed league in December, signing a deal worth a reported £450million. As it stands, he is unable to participate in PGA Tour events, although the PGA and PIF – the Saudi Public Investment Fund that heads up LIV – remain in talks around a merger.

Rahm will miss this week’s Phoenix Open as a result and has also had to watch the PGA Tour stage events at Palm Springs and Torrey Pines, the venue for his US Open success in 2021, over the past month.

He admits that has been hard, and hopes one day to be able to return.

“It was a lot harder to be at home not competing and knowing those events were going on. Palm Springs and Torrey, those weeks were hard. I’ve explained so many times how important Torrey is for me,” he said.

“And driving by Phoenix as often as I had to and knowing that I wasn’t going to play there, it’s definitely emotional. That’s one of the things that I’m going to miss.

“I’m hoping that in the near future I can be back playing some of those events.

“I would certainly love to go back and play some of them.

“If there’s ever a way back and a way where we can play, even if it’s as an invite, I will take it.

“There are certain events that are special to me that I would still love to support.”

Instead of playing in Scottsdale – a course near his home in Arizona – Rahm will this weekend tee it up in Las Vegas in LIV’s second event of the season.

And despite his apparent desire to playing elsewhere, the 29-year-old is adamant he has no regrets over making the move.

“I’m not typically a person that’s going to regret any decisions,” he added.

“I made as educated a decision as I could with the full support of the people around me and [I am] confident that it was the right thing for me, so I’m not going to regret it.”

Becker ends Rune relationship

Boris Becker has ended his short stint coaching Holger Rune to focus on “professional and private responsibilities”.

Becker started working with the world number seven in October in his first major role after being released from prison. The former Wimbledon champion, who is currently barred from entering the UK, served eight months of a two-and-a-half-year sentence for hiding financial assets and loans.
