Business Expo Wigan makes its return to the borough this March

Business owners and entrepreneurs are invited to attend Business Expo Wigan, which makes its return to the borough this March.

Businesswomen Nichola Howard and Jo Leigh, who are founders of the event, are delighted to launch the expo, marking their first in-person event in the borough in four years.

The free-to-attend event will take place at The Edge on Tuesday, March 12 and invites business people at every stage of growing their company to network and attend skills workshops throughout the day.

Business owners will gain start-up advice from the Build A Business team at Manchester Libraries, finance know-how from event sponsors Simplify and marketing lessons from Apprentice semi-finalist, Lewis Ellis.

The event will conclude with a panel debate featuring award-winning Leigh business owners, Adam Vause and Tyldesley’s Antony Grace and Bury-based entrepreneur and Prince’s Trust Ambassador for their “women supporting women” campaign, Charlotte Knowles.

The panel will be hosted by Standish-based social entrepreneur, Grace Dyke.

Nichola said: “After four years, we’re excited to bring the Business Expo in Wigan back to life.

“We are a survivor of the pandemic – 74% of events companies sadly failed to make it through – and we wouldn’t have made it without the support of other businesses in the borough who are all rooting for each other to succeed.

“Our goal is to create a space where Wigan and Leigh’s businesses can connect and feel supported to take on the challenges that running a business throws at them.

“It’s the perfect place to find opportunities, build meaningful partnerships, and invest in yourself and your local business community.”

The event will take place 10am to 3pm. To register for free, visit: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/launch-north-west-presents-business-expo-wigan-tickets-656607078447?aff=ebdssbdestsearch

Can Manchester United defeat Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter finals?

Following Manchester United’s 1-3 defeat at the hands of their rivals Manchester City on Sunday, the Red Devils face another crisis. Helped by Marcus Rashford’s wonder strike, United’s first-half performance at the Etihad Stadium was bullish, but City’s second-half showing blew the visitors away with three unanswered goals. Phil Foden, in particular,  produced an unstoppable performance for Pep Guardiola’s men.

The defeat has further dented Man Utd’s slight UEFA Champions League qualification hopes as well as the club’s potential chances of competing in other European competitions next season. As a result, Erik ten Hag will place increased emphasis on his squad’s FA Cup campaign as it remains the only trophy Man Utd can still win in 2023/24.

After a promising start to 2024, consecutive Premier League defeats, with a 1-2 loss to Fulham at Old Trafford preceding the Man City reversal, Man Utd’s next match against a hapless Everton takes on even more importance, not only from a result perspective but also as a confidence builder.

By the time Bruno Fernandez leads his team out to face an in-form and confident Liverpool at Old Trafford in their all-important FA Cup quarter-final on March 17, supporters and sports bettors alike will expect a more cohesive and positive showing from The Red Devils.

While sportsbooks listed on safebettingsites.com make Jurgen Klopp’s Reds the overwhelming 10/11 favourites for the clash, Man Utd’s home-ground advantage and the unpredictability of FA Cup ties mean the host’s 3/1 odds will encourage many punters to risk its underdog status with the bookies before or on match day.

Man Utd’s recent talisman, striker Rasmus Hojlund, will likely be fit for the FA Cup quarter-final, with his muscle injury responding well to treatment. England international Harry Maguire should be fit to join Raphael Varane in central defence, providing a welcome boost against a Liverpool side that welcomed back Darwin Nunez in time to score a last-gasp winner against Nottingham Forest last time out.

Man Utd defenders Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez will miss the mid-March encounter, with ten Hag hopeful to have Aaron Wan-Bissaka back to join Diego Dalot on the flanks and further bolster his defence against a Liverpool attack also likely to include star player Mohamed Salah.

The United boss will hence prepare to face a full-strength Reds attacking line-up, while defensive playmaker Trent Alexander-Arnold may also be available for the clash.

While the return of Hojlund should boost Man Utd’s chances substantially in the quarter-final, much will also depend on which Marcus Rashford turns up on the day. In the first half against Man City, Rashford’s pace occasionally troubled the hosts, and his long-range goal was from the top draw. Unfortunately,  the forward’s impact faded as the game progressed, leading to a premature second-half substitution.

Arsenal can still move through the gears, says confident Arteta

Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal have “another gear or two to go” as they bid to maintain their challenge to Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

The Gunners will go top on Saturday evening if they can see off Brentford at the Emirates, although they could be overtaken again when Liverpool host City in Sunday’s eagerly anticipated clash at Anfield.

Arsenal were the closest challengers to eventual winners City last season and Arteta feels that experience will stand them in good stead this time round.

He said: “The team want to keep improving, they feel they have another gear or two to go.

“That’s the level we want to push them to. Experience is a factor. They have played more time together and understand the system better.

“Confidence grows when results are positive too.”

The Spaniard says he will then sit back and watch Sunday’s blockbuster with his children.

“We can’t control that, we just have to focus on our game, try to win and then on Sunday it’s a game that should be beautiful to watch for any supporter,” he added.

“I can’t control it but I will enjoy watching two of the best teams in Europe. I will sit there with my kids and enjoy the match.”

All three of the Premier League contenders are in good form but it is Arsenal that have caught the eye recently, scoring 21 goals and conceding just one in their last four league games.

Arteta said: “It’s great, it shows our quality. The way we scored those goals too is really positive to see.

“The fact we are conceding very little, those two ingredients are great.

“We know the demands we have and what Brentford will ask of us to win the game.

“We want to be better so we know we have to win.”

Arteta will be forced into at least one change for the visit of Thomas Frank’s side with goalkeeper David Raya ineligible against his parent club.

That means a rare opportunity for former number one Aaron Ramsdale with Arteta confident the England international will shine.

“He’s fully prepared and desperate to play,” said Arteta.

“On Saturday it will be a great day for him. He has been brilliant, really supportive and pushing every day in training. It’s a joy to have two great goalkeepers in the team.

“One of the toughest things is to deal with players that don’t get the gametime they deserve.

“We have an unbelievable group of players and try to support them. When they get the opportunity they want to contribute to the team in the best way possible.”

FBW Engineering completes six-figure acquisition

Wigan-based FBW Engineering Services Limited has acquired ARL Consulting in a six-figure deal completed today.

FBW aims to leverage ARL’s specialist expertise in the food and beverage sector, providing valuable access to the industry. Simultaneously, ARL stands to benefit from the inclusion of FBW’s Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) services, enhancing the overall value of its existing portfolio.

In a strategic move, both businesses will maintain their autonomy and operate independently under the umbrella of FBW Group; FBW co-owner Ian Hampson will assume the role of managing director at ARL as part of the arrangement.

Working in tandem with the existing management team and collaborating closely with ARL’s founder, Simon Binyon, Ian aims to ensure a seamless integration of operations at the Chester-based enterprise.

Having taken the reins of FBW in 2016 through a management buyout, Ian, alongside co-owner Mike Dawber, has actively fostered growth and invested significantly in the business over the past eight years.

Ian said: “Mike and I share a passion for growth and have consistently invested in the business since our takeover. We’ve successfully elevated FBW’s profile, securing clients both domestically and internationally.

“The acquisition is the next natural step, aligning with our growth strategy, and providing us with the opportunity to explore new markets and integrate additional expertise into our business. ARL is a well-respected brand in the effluent treatment sector, with an impressive client portfolio and a specialist skillset that we are proud to invest in moving forward.”

The deal marks a period of growth for FBW; in late 2023 the team grew with new appointments including Emma Carter as team administrator and Tom Smith as a mechanical engineering apprentice.

Unlocking the Fast Track: Streamlined House Selling for Cash

0

Selling a house can be a complex and time-consuming process, involving estate agents, listings, showings, negotiations, and more. However, there’s another option that’s becoming increasingly popular: selling your house for cash. This method offers several advantages, including speed, convenience, and avoiding the hassle of traditional sales.

If you’re considering selling your house for cash, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process.

Understand the Benefits

Before diving into the process, it’s essential to understand why selling your house for cash might be a good option for you:

Speed: Cash sales typically close much faster than traditional sales, often within a matter of days or weeks.

Convenience: Selling for cash eliminates the need for repairs, staging, showings, and open houses, saving you time and effort.

Certainty: Cash house buyers don’t rely on financing, which reduces the risk of deals falling through due to loan denials or appraisal issues.

Avoiding Fees: When selling for cash, you may avoid agent commissions, closing costs, and other fees associated with traditional sales.

Evaluate Your Property

Before listing your house for cash sale, take a critical look at its condition and market value. Consider factors such as:

Repairs: Determine if any repairs or renovations are needed to make your house more attractive to buyers.

Comparable Sales: Research recent sales of similar properties in your area to get an idea of your home’s market value.

Local Market Conditions: Understand the demand and supply dynamics in your local real estate market, as this can influence your pricing strategy.

Find Cash Buyers

Once you’ve assessed your property, the next step is to find potential cash buyers. Here are some avenues to explore:

Real Estate Investors: Look for local real estate investors or investment companies that specialize in buying properties for cash.

Online Platforms: Utilize online platforms that connect sellers with cash buyers, such as real estate marketplaces or investor networks.

Networking: Reach out to your network of friends, family, and acquaintances to see if anyone is interested in purchasing your property or knows someone who might be.

Prepare Your Property

While cash buyers are often willing to purchase properties in as-is condition, it’s still essential to present your home in the best possible light. Here are some tips:

Clean and Declutter: Ensure your home is clean, clutter-free, and well-maintained to make a positive impression on potential buyers.

Minor Repairs: Address minor repairs and cosmetic issues to enhance the overall appeal of your property.

Consider Staging: While not always necessary, staging can help buyers envision themselves living in the space and may lead to quicker sales.

Negotiate the Sale

Once you’ve attracted potential cash buyers, it’s time to negotiate the terms of the sale. Here are key considerations:

Price: Determine a fair and competitive price based on your property’s condition, market value, and comparable sales.

Terms: Discuss the terms of the sale, including the closing timeline, earnest money deposit, and any contingencies.

Documentation: Ensure all agreements are documented in writing to avoid misunderstandings or disputes later on.

Close the Deal

Once you’ve reached an agreement with a cash buyer, it’s time to close the deal. Here’s what to expect:

Title Search: The buyer will typically conduct a title search to ensure there are no liens or encumbrances on the property.

Closing Process: The closing process for cash sales is usually faster and less complex than traditional sales. You’ll sign the necessary paperwork and transfer ownership of the property to the buyer.

Receive Payment: Upon closing, you’ll receive payment for the sale of your property in cash or via wire transfer, depending on the agreed-upon terms.

Conclusion

Selling your house for cash offers a convenient and efficient alternative to traditional real estate transactions, particularly if you’re trying to alleviate financial vulnerability. By understanding the process and following these steps, you can successfully sell your house for cash and move on to your next chapter with ease.

Remember to do your due diligence, evaluate your options carefully, and work with reputable buyers to ensure a smooth and satisfactory transaction.

India v England: Ashwin and Yadav put hosts in control of fifth Test

England endured a day to forget as Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav spun India into a position of control on day one of the fifth Test.

The tourists collapsed from 100 for one to 218 all out with Ashwin – on his 100th Test appearance – and Yadav bamboozling an England line-up looking low on confidence.

Joshua v Ngannou – preview and prediction

In reply, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma both hit half centuries as India closed on 135 for one, a deficit of 83.

The day started well for Ben Stokes’ men as they looked to end the tour on a high, despite India holding an unassailable 3-1 lead with one match to play.

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett batted well to put on 64 for the opening wicket before the latter skied Yadav to cover for 27.

Ollie Pope’s struggles continued with 11 before Crawley’s well-made 73 was ended by Yadav.

Yorkshire pair Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow – another playing his 100th game in Test cricket – put on 38 before Bairstow was dismissed after a frenetic 18-ball 29.

That prompted a run of three wickets without the addition of a run as Root (26) and Stokes (a six-ball duck) followed.

Ben Foakes attempted to stop the rot with 24 but he lacked support as Ashwin mopped up the tail. Ashwin ended with four for 51 with Yadav claiming five for 72.

The success of India’s spinners must have given England encouragement given they avoided the temptation to pick a seam-heavy line-up.

However, Jaiswal continued his fine form, backed up by captain Sharma, as India made England’s attack look ordinary.

An early burst from James Anderson and the recalled Mark Wood failed to reap rewards while Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir could not find the same devil in the pitch as Ashwin and Yadav had done earlier.

Bashir did take the only wicket to fall, Jaiswal (57) advancing down the pitch only to miss the ball with Foakes whipping off the bails.

Sharma reached 52 by the close with Shubman Gill on 26 not out.

Six Nations 2024: Scotland visit Italy, England host title-chasing Ireland and Wales take on France – preview, how to watch and predictions

All eyes will be on Twickenham this weekend as England look to stop the Ireland juggernaut and prevent Andy Farrell’s men from clinching the Six Nations title with a game to spare.

Ireland have looked invincible and remain on course to become the first team to secure successive grand slams since the tournament was expanded to six teams.

Elsewhere on Saturday, winless Italy will hope to claim their first victory when they host Scotland in Rome.

Sunday’s game sees Warren Gatland’s Wales, who have lost all three matches so far, take on a France side that has struggled for form in this year’s tournament.

Here, we run the rule over the key storylines ahead of the fourth set of Six Nations fixtures.

Italy v Scotland (Saturday, 1415)

Scotland continue to impress and would be heading to Italy with three wins from three and in pole position to challenge Ireland had it not been for their controversial defeat to France in round two.

They have beaten the Azzurri in each of their last 13 meetings although they won’t find it easy on Saturday against an Italy side that continue to improve under coach Gonzalo Quesada.

Like Scotland, they also have a hard-luck story with Paolo Garbisi’s last-gasp penalty miss in Paris last time out denying them a famous victory over France.

Scotland have made three changes to their line-up with Cameron Redpath, George Horne and Andy Christie coming in for Sione Tuipulotu, Ben White and Jamie Ritchie.

England v Ireland (Saturday, 1645)

Twickenham will be rocking for the visit of an Ireland side that has swept all before them in this year’s Six Nations. Farrell’s men have enjoyed three bonus-point wins so far and have racked up a points differential of +81.

They will be crowned champions if they beat England and score four tries, taking five match points and their tournament tally to an unassailable 20.

Failing that, they will still clinch the trophy if they win without a bonus point and Scotland fail to claim all five points available from their game in Italy.

Former Ireland number eight Jamie Heaslip feels the only thing stopping them is a lack of discipline. He told the BBC’s Rugby Union Daily podcast: “I haven’t seen what the bookies are saying, but in order for England to win, Ireland have to go down to like 14 or 13 players and I think England need a couple of trick plays up their sleeve.

“Andy Farrell won’t let them take anything for granted. They’re not fearful of going there [Twickenham] now but they should definitely understand the history between the two sides.

“Farrell is definitely one of the best people to remind them of that.”

Wales v France (Sunday, 1500)

Wales’ record of three defeats from three has seen Gatland take radical action by dropping centres George North and Nick Tompkins with Joe Roberts and Owen Watkin coming in.

They won’t have a better chance of recording an elusive win, though, with France going through a period of instability.

Doubts surround the future of coach Fabien Galthie due to poor performances that have seen Les Bleus lose to Ireland, scrape past Scotland and draw with Italy.

How to watch

Every game of the Six Nations will be shown by either the BBC or ITV in the UK. Saturday’s games between Italy and Scotland and England and Ireland will be shown on ITV1.

Sunday’s clash between Wales and France is on BBC One.

Predictions

Ireland look untouchable while England, as they often have under Steve Borthwick, appear a work in progress. We’re going for Ireland to notch win number four and secure the bonus point they require to win the title this weekend.

The game in Rome is harder to call. Improving Italy against expansive Scotland. It could be high-scoring but we’re going for the visitors to edge it, although it could be close.

Look for France’s woes to continue in Cardiff. Wales can only get better and a disjointed France could provide the perfect opposition.

New plans underway for the Orangery in Heaton Park

0
Plans to refurbish the Orangery in Heaton Park following a 12 year hiatus are underway as a planning application is submitted to the council.
The plans will see the Orangery, last open in 2012, undergo an refurbishment overhaul to bring the much loved building, steeped in history, back into use.

The planned works to the interior of the Orangery are the latest in the continued investment in the Hall which saw the Council and Historic England invest over £2.1m in 2018-19 in works to the external fabric of this Grade 1 listed building to ensure it remains wind and weathertight.

The work to the Orangery which is part of the Grade 1 listed Heaton Hall, will focus on new flooring, a full redecoration, new doors, upgraded toilets and a full overhaul of the electrical and heating systems including a new low carbon air source heat pump in line with the council’s commitment to become zero carbon by 2038.

Manchester City Council would work with Construction partner Manchester and Cheshire Construction on this first fix to fit out the building which would take approximately five months to complete leaving a blank canvas for any future operating partner.

Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon said: “We know that Heaton Hall is most definitely a jewel in Heaton Park’s crown and as custodians of this wonderful building we take our responsibility for its upkeep seriously.

“The next step in this journey is bringing the Orangery, a much-loved part of Heaton Hall estate, back into use. We are determined to inject energy and vigour into this beautiful building and in the future work with a partner that will do it justice and bring it back into use as an events space to ensure its long-term future. I look forward to exciting times ahead.”

David Blood, chair of Friends of Heaton Hall said: “The Friends of Heaton Hall is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and we look forward to continuing to work alongside the council and Historic England to restore the Orangery so that it can open its doors to visitors once again. We are excited by the news and hope that more people will get to experience a special place that is Heaton Hall.”

Anchor care home to celebrate ‘veteran friendly’ status

0

The first non-military care home in the country to achieve Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) status is to hold a celebratory event featuring a singer and drummers from armed forces charity the Soldiers’, Sailors’ and Airmen’s Families Association (SSAFA).

Anchor’s Lightbowne Hall in Moston, Manchester, worked through the national programme and achieved Veteran Friendly Framework status in November last year.

The celebratory event takes place at the home today and will also include a presentation by Anchor’s managing director of care services, Rob Martin.

Care home manager Rebecca Mardy said: “My team at Anchor’s Lightbowne Hall worked incredibly hard to identify our veterans and provide training resources to better support colleagues with the aim of creating a veteran friendly culture.

“This also addresses social isolation and helps to signpost to the range of statutory and charitable services available for veterans.

“We are proud to say that we understand the social, emotional and physical needs of our veterans and the impact their military service has had on their experience of life, work, family and physical and mental health.

“This understanding means we can deliver even better care for them.”

Extremely proud

VFF project lead Kathryn Glass said: “The VFF team is extremely proud that Lightbowne Hall has achieved Veteran Friendly status. This is testament to their hard work and commitment to understanding the specific needs of their veteran residents and providing the very best care. I’m looking forward to sharing the celebration with them on what promises to be a very special day.”

Mr Martin said: “I know how hard everyone at the home worked to get to this point and I know how proud they are to have achieved Veteran Friendly status on behalf of their residents, who can only benefit from it.

“The home’s celebration event promises to be a fantastic day for everyone involved.

“I have a military background and served with 40 Regiment Royal Artillery for seven years developing some of my earliest leadership skills in Bosnia as part of the NATO peacekeeping force (SFOR).”

Representatives from 202 Field Squadron 75 Engineers Regiment have been invited to join colleagues and residents at the event at Lightbowne Hall to help celebrate what is a momentous occasion for all involved.

The event will start with a buffet lunch followed by a performance by singer Paul Bryant, – who regularly performs at Lightbowne Hall and is popular with residents –  the drummers from SSAFA and the presentation by Rob Martin.
