IPL 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders v Sunrisers Hyderabad – Preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

State of Play

Having both missed out on the play-offs in 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad open their 2024 Indian Premier League campaigns against one another at Eden Gardens on Saturday.

KKR have suffered four group-stage exits in the last five seasons, leading them to break the bank for Mitchell Starc, who has become the most expensive player in the competition’s history nine years on from his last appearance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2015.

Starc’s KKR debut pits him against his Australia captain Pat Cummins in a mouthwatering showdown between two of the IPL’s biggest signings.

Cummins has become the third-most expensive buy of the 2024 season as Hyderabad look to improve on a dismal 2023 campaign which saw them win just four of 14 games and finish bottom of the pile.

Their renewal also saw Travis Head brought in to partner Heinrich Klaasen, who has gone from strength to strength since making his first IPL century last May. With the Sunrisers possessing plenty of good overseas options, getting the right balance in their XI will be key.

Saturday’s hosts, meanwhile, will rely on returning skipper Shreyas Iyer with the bat. Having lost his place in India’s Test and T20I teams after missing the 2023 IPL campaign through injury, Iyer must find his feet quickly if KKR are to return to title contention.

With both KKR and the Sunrisers in transition after underwhelming 2023 seasons, the result of Saturday’s match could go a long way to telling us where their ambitions lie this campaign.

Expected line-ups

Kolkata Knight Riders: Phil Salt, Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer (c), Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Mitchell Starc, Harshit Rana, Suyash Sharma, Varun Chakravarthy.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Mayank Agarwal, Travis Head, Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Washington Sundar, Pat Cummins (c), Shahbaz Ahmed, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Markande.

How to watch

Sky have the rights to show the IPL to UK viewers in 2024 and will broadcast every game live. Tomorrow’s late game will be shown on Sky Sports Cricket from 13:50 UK time.

Prediction

The acquisition of Cummins means the Sunrisers boast exceptional depth with the ball, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Varun Chakravarthy representing strong spin options.

However, the wicket at Eden Gardens is not expected to offer too much assistance to bowlers and the visitors may lack the scoring power of their hosts, so we’re backing Iyer to help KKR to a morale-boosting win on his IPL return.

Small but mighty: How independent tradespeople are winning over British homeowners

When it comes to maintaining our homes, independent tradespeople are crucial. From fixing a boiler to rewiring a room or two, these professionals keep the gears of daily life turning smoothly.

Recently, a survey conducted by Clothes2order shed light on the preferences of British homeowners when it comes to choosing tradespeople. Astonishingly, 93% of respondents expressed that they prefer to hire independent contractors or small businesses for their household needs.

The appeal of independent tradespeople

Tradespeople embody reliability, expertise, and the personal touch that larger firms sometimes struggle to replicate. They understand the nuances of their trade and the unique needs of their community. Whether it’s a plumber who arrives promptly during a plumbing emergency or a builder who meticulously crafts a bespoke kitchen, these professionals often go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction.

Key findings unveiled

The survey conducted by Clothes2order looked into the opinions of British homeowners, unveiling a treasure trove of insights regarding their preferences in tradespeople. Here’s a breakdown of the key findings:

  • Skill and attention to detail: It comes as no surprise that a staggering 79% of participants placed the highest value on tradespeople exhibiting a high skill level and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Reliability: Close behind, 75% of respondents emphasised the importance of reliability. For homeowners, knowing that a tradesperson will honour their commitments and show up as promised is crucial in establishing trust and confidence.
  • Transparent communication is key: Transparent communication emerged as a crucial aspect of positive homeowner-tradesperson relationships, with 59% of respondents highlighting the importance of regular updates throughout the project. This emphasis on clear communication underscores the value of keeping clients informed every step of the way.
  • Tidiness and respect for property: While slightly less prioritised, tidiness and respect for property still held significant sway, garnering recognition from 24% of participants. For homeowners, the manner in which tradespeople conduct themselves on-site reflects their professionalism and consideration, influencing overall satisfaction with the service provided.

Poor tradesperson experiences

Inevitably, not all experiences with tradespeople unfold smoothly, and participants in the survey revealed some of the challenges they encountered. Here’s a closer look at some of the common grievances:

  • Hidden fees and cost changes: Foremost among the concerns raised were hidden fees or unanticipated changes to the initially agreed-upon costs. This issue highlights the importance of transparent pricing structures in creating trust and preventing unpleasant financial surprises for homeowners.
  • Communication breakdowns: Poor communication regarding project timelines emerged as another significant pain point for homeowners. Whether it’s failing to provide timely updates or neglecting to communicate effectively about project progress, inadequate communication can lead to frustration and erode trust between clients and tradespeople.
  • Unexpected delays: The unpredictability of unexpected delays in project completion was cited as a recurring source of dissatisfaction. Homeowners rely on tradespeople to adhere to agreed-upon schedules and deadlines, and any deviations from these expectations can disrupt plans and cause inconvenience.
  • Post-completion cleanup: Additionally, leaving a mess behind post-completion featured prominently on the list of grievances. Homeowners value tradespeople who not only deliver quality work but also demonstrate respect for their property by leaving the worksite clean and tidy.

These findings show the critical role of open communication, adherence to agreed-upon schedules, and a commitment to professionalism in forming positive client-tradesperson relationships and fostering satisfaction on both ends.

The role of personalised workwear in building trust

Beyond skill and reliability, the appearance of tradespeople can significantly influence homeowner perceptions. A professional and smart appearance not only instils confidence but also serves as a visual representation of the tradesperson’s commitment to their craft.

Personalised workwear, adorned with logos and contact information, not only lends a sense of professionalism but also helps to improve brand recognition. In an industry where trust is key, consistent branding can reinforce a tradesperson’s reputation and legitimacy.

Conclusion

When it comes to home maintenance, it is vital that independent tradespeople portray reliability and expertise. The overwhelming preference for smaller businesses among British homeowners shows the enduring appeal of personalised service and local expertise. Prioritising qualities such as skill, reliability, and transparent communication remains extremely important.

Additionally, investing in personalised workwear not only enhances professionalism but also serves as a powerful tool for building brand awareness and trust. In a landscape where reputation is everything, the small details, from skillful craftsmanship to branded attire, can make all the difference!

New England kit: Rishi Sunak says Nike shouldn’t ‘mess with’ St George’s Cross

0

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has hit out at Nike’s decision to recolour the St George’s Cross on England’s kit for Euro 2024, saying designers shouldn’t “mess with” the national flag.

Nike revealed England’s kits for Euro 2024 earlier this week, with the home shirt featuring what the designer calls “a playful update” to the St George’s Cross on the rear of the collar.

Alongside its traditional red colour, the cross incorporates navy, light blue and purple tones against the blue of the collar.

The change has drawn criticism from several high-profile politicians, with Labour leader Keir Starmer telling The Sun that Nike should recall the shirts and change the design.

It is understood Nike and the Football Association stand by the design, but that has not stopped the Prime Minister from wading into the debate.

On Friday, he told reporters: “When it comes to our national flags, we shouldn’t mess with them.

“They’re a source of pride, identity, who we are, and they’re perfect as they are.”

Nike say the additional colours are inspired by the blue, white and red training kits worn by the Three Lions at the 1966 World Cup, their only triumphant major tournament campaign.

England will face Brazil and Belgium in two high-profile friendlies at Wembley Stadium over the coming days, as Gareth Southgate finetunes his plans for Euro 2024.

The Three Lions open their campaign in Germany against Serbia on June 16, before facing Denmark and Slovenia in their other Group C fixtures.

Australian Grand Prix 2024: Formula One race preview, how to watch and predictions

The big story

Like the previous three years in Formula One, 2024 has so far belonged to Max Verstappen, who has swept to victory in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to leave a fourth straight world title looking inevitable.

However, the third weekend of the campaign takes us to the setting of 2023’s most explosive event, where Verstappen survived a race which featured eight retirements and a record-breaking three red flags.

While similar levels of chaos are not expected when the F1 schedule returns to normality with Sunday’s race in Melbourne, might the high-speed track offer opportunities for others to challenge Verstappen’s dominance?

Australian Grand Prix: Hamilton’s confidence in Mercedes car at all-time low

Only Ferrari have so far looked capable of pushing the Red Bulls, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz securing one podium finish apiece this term. Sainz missed the Jeddah race after being diagnosed with appendicitis, with British teenager Oliver Bearman deputising and scoring a creditable seventh-placed finish.

Sainz is back for this weekend and finished third in Friday’s second practice session, which saw Leclerc edge out Verstappen by 0.381 seconds. Should there be the slightest slip-up from Red Bull, the Scuderia will be waiting to pounce.

Leclerc feels the team are in their best shape yet in 2024, as he bids to hand Ferrari a fourth win in six editions of the race.

“I would say that we are in a better position than the first two races,” he said after FP2. “However, Red Bull weren’t pushing yet, so we’ve got to wait and see where their potential is at.

“I think they are still ahead, but we might have our best shot this weekend from the beginning of the season.”

With Mercedes struggling and McLaren yet to live up to the pre-season hype, Ferrari will surely fancy themselves to be the best of the rest again down under, and preventing a third successive Red Bull one-two will be the goal.

The subplots

While Ferrari enjoyed Friday’s practice sessions, it was a difficult day for their future star Lewis Hamilton as he slumped to 18th in FP2.

The seven-time world champion again lashed out at Mercedes’ W15 car after finishing well adrift of team-mate George Russell in sixth, and a first race win since 2021 still looks some way off for the 39-year-old.

Elsewhere, it’s always worth looking out for the home hopefuls, and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri will be targeting more of the same after finishing fourth in Saudi Arabia last time out.

The 22-year-old looks the most likely driver to provide the Albert Park crowd with some joy, with fellow Aussie favourite Daniel Ricciardo yet to put a point on the board amid struggles with his RB in the first two races of the campaign.

Finally, with the midfield more crowded than ever, it’s a bad weekend to be a driver down, but that is exactly what has happened to Williams.

Alex Albon’s chassis suffered irreparable damage when he lost control and crashed at Turn Six in FP1 on Friday, having made the same mistake one turn later in the race proper in 2023.

Team-mate Logan Sargeant has paid for that error, with Williams opting to withdraw the American and field Albon in his car for the remainder of the weekend. He is now under huge pressure to repay their faith.

The track

The Australian Grand Prix has been held at the Albert Park circuit since 1996, only failing to take place during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

One of the most popular events on the calendar, the Melbourne race takes part on a 5.278-kilometre circuit and is one of the fastest on the F1 calendar, with average speeds hovering around 140 km/h.

The track features a high-speed section along Lakeside Drive and four DRS zones, and tyre provider Pirelli has gone one step softer in its allocation compared to last year’s event, with the softest C5 compound available for the first time this season.

What they said

Verstappen on his performance in Friday’s practice sessions:

“It was alright. I think Ferrari is quick, but from our side I think there are also a few more things we can finetune. There’s nothing crazy, nothing too worrying – I think we just need to finetune the car a little bit.”

Hamilton on his continued struggles with Mercedes’ W15 car:

“I obviously don’t feel great. We had one of the worst sessions I’ve probably had for a long time. P1 generally felt quite good, the car in P1 felt the best it’s ever felt, and it just got worse and worse.

“We made some big changes into P2 and it was tough. After that session, I feel the least confident I’ve ever felt with this car but there are positives from that P1 run that we did.”

Piastri on McLaren’s hopes at his home grand prix:

“I think we were a step closer to being close to Ferrari in Saudi but we still don’t quite have enough at the moment. I think for us, the fight is with Mercedes at the moment.

“Hopefully we can start challenging a bit more later in the year. As much as I don’t want to put people’s hopes down at home, any more than P5 is going to require some good fortune.”

When and how to watch

F1 fans in the UK will be able to watch every race of 2024 on Sky Sports F1 or via the Sky Go app. The full schedule for the remainder of the race weekend is as below.

Full schedule (all times UK)

Saturday 23rd March

01:30 – Practice Three

05:00 – Qualifying

Sunday 24th March

04:00 – Australian Grand Prix

Predictions

It’s impossible to predict anything other than a Verstappen win at present, but it would be no surprise if the Ferraris are closer to the Dutchman than ever before this weekend, perhaps to the detriment of Sergio Perez.

We’re backing at least one of Leclerc and Sainz – if not both – to sneak onto the podium, with Russell, Fernando Alonso and the McLaren pair the next-most likely challengers. Another difficult weekend could await Hamilton, though he did secure one of his two second-placed finishes of 2023 at this event.

£50,000 reward to find person responsible for death of Parklife goer

0

A £50,000 reward has been offered to find the person responsible for the death of Robert Hart (pictured), who died at Manchester’s Parklife festival in 2014.

Investigating detectives made a fresh appeal on Crimewatch Live today as the 10th anniversary of the tragedy approaches.

The reward ‘is payable for information that leads to charge and conviction’.

Robert (26) from Macclesfield, died after being punched by an unknown male assailant at the music festival in Heaton Park on Saturday, June 7, 2014.

Robert’s attacker has never been identified. He is described as mixed race, in his mid-20s, around 6ft to 6ft 2in tall, of muscular build with short, dark hair which was shaved at the sides.

He may have been with several people including an unknown woman – she is believed to be white, in her mid-20s with blonde, shoulder-length hair, around 5ft 7ins tall and possibly wearing a pink T-shirt.

Dig deep into your conscience

Detective Inspector Madeline Kelly said: “Even though this terrible incident was almost 10 years ago, it will still be fresh in the minds of many people, especially Robert’s family and people who were at Parklife. Despite the passing of time, the heartache felt by Robert’s family has not faded.

“Just as we were in 2014, we are determined to catch the person responsible which is why we are taking a fresh look at the evidence and appealing for the assistance of the public.

“We are appealing for people to dig deep into their consciences – it you were one of the people involved on the day we would urge you to come forward. No-one went to the festival that weekend with thoughts of violence.

“Allegiances and friendships will have changed so if anyone has any information they can report it to police in confidence, particularly if they feel they could not before.

“We are also asking for people at Parklife on Saturday, June 7 to share their photos and videos with us – especially people who were around the main stage at around 9pm just after Rudimental had finished their set and before Snoop Dogg was due on.”

Crimewatch Live replayed some of the original appeal from 2014 to coincide with what would have been Robert’s 36th birthday at the start of March.

Robert’s mum Elaine said: “Robert loved music and played his guitar all the time – music was the reason he went to Parklife. He didn’t go to Parklife for anything other than for his love of music.

“I visit him every week in Macclesfield Cemetery – he shouldn’t be there, he should be here, enjoying and living his life to the full with a family of his own.”

Investigators have set up a Major Incident Public Portal – photos and videos can be uploaded via https://mipp.police.uk/operation/0601020114A08-PO1

Information can also be sent via a dedicated email address [email protected]

Crimewatch Live was on at 9.30am today and can be watched back on BBC iPlayer.

Australian Grand Prix: Albon to take over Sargeant’s car after crash

Williams have confirmed Alex Albon will take over Logan Sargeant’s car for the remainder of the Australian Grand Prix weekend following his crash in Friday’s first practice session.

Albon lost control of his car at the exit of Turn Six during FP1, running over the kerb before spinning into the wall on the other side of the track.

He was unharmed in the incident but was forced to miss FP2 as Williams assessed the damage to his car, which has been deemed too significant for the team to continue using the chassis.

With no spare available, the team have opted to withdraw Sargeant and have Albon participate in the American’s car for the remainder of the weekend.

In a statement, team principal James Vowles said: “It’s unacceptable in modern-day Formula One not to have a spare chassis, but it’s a reflection of how far behind we were in the winter period and an illustration of why we need to go through significant change.

“As a result, we have had some very difficult decisions to make this afternoon. While Logan should not have to suffer from a mistake that he did not make, every race counts when the midfield is tighter than ever, so we have made the call based on our best potential to score points.

“We cannot thank Logan enough for his graceful acceptance, demonstrating his dedication to the team; he is a true team player.

“This will prove a tough weekend for Williams and this situation is not one that we will put ourselves in again.”

Albon said: “I have to be totally honest and say that no driver would want to give up his seat. I would never want anything like this to happen.

“Logan has always been a consummate professional and a team player from day one, and this won’t be an easy one for him to take.

“At this point, though, I cannot dwell on the situation and my only job is to maximise our potential and work with the whole team to make sure we do the best job possible.”

Albon earned 27 of Williams’ total of 28 points in 2023 as they finished seventh in the constructors’ championship.

Apartments at the Downs Quarter in Altrincham near completion

With build progressing well at The Downs Quarter in Altrincham, the McGoff Group’s latest residential development located on The Downs – a range of 31 one, two and three bedroom apartments – will soon be available to move into.

The new build development, worth circa £17.5 million, is really starting to take shape with the McGoff Group now able to confirm a phased approached to practical completion.

Apartments housed within two buildings, The Place and The Blok, will be ready for occupancy after Easter, with other properties at the development scheduled for completion later this year.

Reside Manchester has been appointed by the McGoff Group to head up the apartment sales at The Downs Quarter (pictured below).

Aprtment living at The Downs Quarter SMALL Following a positive start for the property market so far in 2024, when inflation fell below 4%, mortgage lenders reduced rates with further cuts expected, and house prices on the up, Reside Manchester’s appointment comes at the perfect time.

Rhiannon Durston, sales and marketing director at Reside Manchester, says: “The Downs Quarter is a fantastic scheme nestled away in affluent Altrincham, where demand for apartment living is high due to its award-winning town centre, thriving business scene and close proximity to Manchester city centre.

“The market is buoyant right now and with positive news for buyers since the start of the year, we’ve already secured several sales, a testament to the design of the development and its location.  We expect demand to soar in the coming weeks and months as practical completion nears.”

The McGoff Group also worked with Cheadle-based property lender Together, which has a £6.8billion loan book and provided a multi-million pound development finance facility to kick-start the major development scheme in 2022.

Simone Milner, relationship manager for development funding at Together, said: “We were impressed by the vision of the McGoff Group and Consensus and are proud to have been able to play our part in realising their ambitions through providing a finance facility to revive this ambitious scheme out of receivership.

“The development is in an excellent location in the heart of a thriving and affluent market town with great amenities and transport links. It’s fantastic to see The Downs Quarter nearing completion as it will provide much-needed affordable homes, opening doors for people such as first time buyers, families and downsizers.”

The Downs Quarter will deliver three distinctive buildings, each enjoying its own unique style yet designed to blend together and complement the historic charm of the prime town centre setting.

Paul Danks, director at the McGoff Group, said: “Working with Reside Manchester is already proving to be the right decision with a number of reservations secured to date.  With both inflation and mortgage rates falling, not forgetting practical completion is fast approaching, there has been a surge of interest in the apartments at The Downs Quarter, which is great to see.”

Prices for the apartments at The Downs Quarter start from £270,000.  For further information or to request a brochure, please contact Reside Manchester on 0161 837 2840 or visit www.residemanchester.com.

The McGoff Group and Consensus Property have joined forces to create a new joint venture (JV) to deliver The Downs Quarter development in Altrincham.

Both the McGoff Group and Derek Thompson’s Consensus Property are family-owned Altrincham-based companies, each well established in the North West construction and property sector, with the Thompson family involved in the overall Downs project for many years.  For further details, visit www.mcgoffgroup.com.

Australian Grand Prix: Hamilton’s confidence in Mercedes car at all-time low

Lewis Hamilton said his confidence in Mercedes’ W15 car was at an all-time low after he struggled to 18th in Friday’s second practice session ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton finished ninth in the opening session in Melbourne, only around a fifth of a second off pacesetter Lando Norris, but then slumped to 18th after Mercedes altered his setup between sessions.

Hamilton was heard to tell engineers “something’s wrong” over team radio as he struggled for pace, finishing well adrift of team-mate George Russell in sixth.

The seven-time world champion has not won a single race since the end of the 2021 season and has expressed his frustrations with Mercedes’ last three cars.

He did likewise after Friday’s second practice, telling reporters: “I obviously don’t feel great. We had one of the worst sessions I’ve probably had for a long time.

“P1 generally felt quite good, the car in P1 felt the best it’s ever felt, and it just got worse and worse.

“We made some big changes into P2 and it was tough. After that session, I feel the least confident I’ve ever felt with this car but there are positives from that P1 run that we did.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff hopes the session will serve as part of a learning curve, telling Sky Sports: “We have achieved to experiment, but we haven’t unlocked performance.

“In the second session, we went through quite a dramatic setup change on Lewis’ car and that has dramatically backfired, but this is why we are having those sessions.”

It was a better day for Hamilton’s future team Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc quickest ahead of Max Verstappen as Red Bull failed to hit their usual lofty heights.

Verstappen damaged the floor of his car in first practice and was unable to fully recover as Leclerc led him by 0.381 seconds, with Scuderia team-mate Carlos Sainz finishing third after missing the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with appendicitis.

Williams driver Alex Albon, meanwhile, missed the second session after crashing in the first, losing control on Turn Six as his car smashed into the wall at the next bend. Albon’s team said they were assessing the damage to his car after that incident.

IPL 2024: Punjab Kings v Delhi Capitals – Preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

State of Play

Neither the Punjab Kings nor the Delhi Capitals have ever won the Indian Premier League title, and after respective group-stage finishes of eighth and ninth in 2023, both will be targeting major improvements this year.

The Kings gave themselves every chance of making the play-offs last term only for four losses in their final five games to derail them, and they must ensure there is no hangover when they open their 2024 season in Mohali.

There’s plenty to like for England fans, with Punjab adding Chris Woakes to their sizeable English contingent already including Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran.

Bairstow missed the entirety of last season through injury and has struggled for form across formats in recent months. He may find himself out of the XI at the outset of the new campaign as the Kings bid to end their nine-year play-off exile.

Their first opponents Delhi are also relying on returning players, most notably captain Rishabh Pant, who has not played any form of competitive cricket since being injured in a serious road accident in December 2022.

Major pressure will rest on Pant’s shoulders as Delhi look to avoid a repeat of last season, when five straight losses to start the year ended their play-off bid before it had even begun.

With plenty of question marks hanging over two teams who have struggled in recent years, Saturday’s early game looks a tough one to call.

Expected line-ups

Punjab Kings: Shikar Dhawan (c), Prabhsimran Singh, Rilee Rossouw, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma, Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada, Harpreet Brar, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh.

Delhi Capitals: David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant (c), Shai Hope, Ricky Bhui, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar.

How to watch

Sky have the rights to show the IPL to UK viewers in 2024 and will broadcast every game live via Sky Sports Cricket. Tomorrow’s game will get under way at 10:00 UK time.

Prediction

The second game of the 2024 IPL season could come down to a pure shoot-out between the Kings’ pace attack and the top order of the Capitals.

Though it remains to be seen what sort of form Pant will return in, the India wicketkeeper has plenty of quality around him, and Warner and Marsh’s ability against pacemen could be decisive in a narrow away win.
