Manchester United: Getafe hope to keep Greenwood

0

Getafe president Angel Torres is confident Mason Greenwood will return to the Spanish club on loan next season if Manchester United can’t sell him in the summer.

Greenwood has impressed on a temporary deal with Getafe this term, scoring 10 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions.

The one-cap England international was charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The charges were dropped in February 2023.

He has been attempting to rebuild his career in Spain – and Torres believes another loan spell at Getafe would do him good.

He told Radio Marca: “If it was up to the lad, his parents and the club [Getafe], I think he would continue for another year.

“But regarding Manchester [United], the news that we have from last week when the [Getafe] sporting director went to England to see some games and was with them, is that if a good offer comes along, they would want to sell because he is not going to go back there.

“We’ll have to wait until the end of June. The family and the player are very comfortable and very happy here, with our fans.”

Torres has been impressed with how the 22-year-old has settled at the club on the outskirts of Madrid.

He added: “When he came here, he hadn’t played for 16 months. He has recovered his form, he has scored eight league goals and two in the Copa. The people and the coach are very happy with him.

“I think he will remain with us for another season, or at least until January. He is a good footballer.”

104,000 panel solar farm set to power the University of Manchester

0

The University of Manchester has signed a landmark new deal that will see up to 65% of its electricity demand supplied through a brand-new renewables project.

In a major move towards achieving its 2038 zero carbon ambitions, the university has partnered with leading UK clean energy company Enviromena to buy electricity generated from its brand-new solar farm based in Medebridge, Essex.

Once complete, Medebridge Solar Farm will comprise 104,000 solar panels across 175 acres of low-grade agricultural land, the equivalent of around 70 football pitches.

The site will also create a significant biodiversity net gain. With enhancements to the existing hedgerows and planting of native grassland and wildflower meadow beneath and around the solar arrays, the site will encourage nesting opportunities for wildlife and improved habitat connectivity.

The contract that secures this investment, known as a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (cPPA), commits the University to purchase 80% of Medebridge’s total annual generation capacity (58 GWh) for the next decade, reducing University carbon emissions by 12,000 t/co2 every year – enough to power 21,000 homes.

Lee Barlow, project lead at the University of Manchester, said: “After nearly three years of rigorous procurement and negotiations, we are proud to announce this landmark agreement, which reinforces our commitment to sustainability whilst delivering best value to our students and stakeholders, in the form of price certainty and supply stability.

“The journey has been marked by unprecedented challenges in the energy and renewables sector, first with the 2022 energy crisis, and later complicated by geopolitical events in Eastern Europe. Securing this 10-year cPPA despite such adversity is a huge accomplishment and holds special significance as we celebrate the university’s bicentennial year.”

Carly McLachlan, professor of climate and energy policy and academic lead for Carbon at the University of Manchester, said: “The really important thing for us in developing this relationship was that our commitment would add new renewable energy capacity to the UK electricity system. Through our long-term purchasing commitment, we have played a key role in bringing this development forward – maximising the positive impact of our purchasing power.”

This milestone achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary implementation team from the university, complemented by the expertise of its energy broker, Inspired PLC, and Eversheds Sutherland acting as external legal counsel.

Enviromena develops, builds, owns and operates renewable energy assets and currently manages over 300MW of renewables projects. In addition, Enviromena is currently working on a 3GW+ pipeline of renewable energy projects in the UK and Italy that will significantly decarbonise electricity networks, reduce emissions and support the global drive towards net zero.

Lee Adams, Enviromena’s chief commercial officer, said: “Enviromena is leading the charge towards a world powered by clean energy and our teams are delivering high volume projects that make a massive contribution to lowering carbon emissions. This significant partnership with The University of Manchester demonstrates the shared commitment between ourselves and an influential, large-scale organisation, which, at the time it celebrates its 200-year anniversary, is taking steps towards reducing its carbon footprint through the technologies of tomorrow for a cleaner future energy supply.”

All degree programmes are kite-marked against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the University is rated top in the UK and Europe and second in the world in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings global performance table (2023).

MySQL to PostgreSQL: Database migration made easy

The process of transferring data from one database management system (DBMS) to another is known as Database Migration. It involves shifting data from a MySQL database to a PostgreSQL database. MySQL and PostgreSQL are both powerful open-source relational database systems, but they differ in various aspects such as syntax, data types, and features.

Open source RDBMs with strong programming and administration tools are available but special types are MySQL and PostgreSQL.

As usual, every database administrator wants an upgrade over what he currently uses and that is why PostgreSQL is an option. Amongst its many benefits over MySQL are:

  • Full compliance with ANSI SQL standards.
  • Many models of indexing are supported.
  • Asynchronous commit is permitted.
  • It supports two types of replication – synchronous and asynchronous.

With such benefits, it is easy to conclude on the reasons anyone would make a switch.

The migration of database may be simple to complex depending on to modules involved but a schematic migration entails:

  1. From the source MySQL database, extract table definitions in the form of DDL SQL statements.
  2. Before loading to the target database, convert the statements to destination format.
  3. An intermediate storage such as CSV files should receive the exported data from MySQL database.
  4. PostgreS database as destination format, transformation of the incoming data is necessary.
  5. Triggers, stored procedures and views present in MySQL database is extracted from MySQL database. These data should be in the form of source code and SQL statements.
  6. According to the destination format, the statements and source codes are converted. Loading into PostgreSQL database should follow.
  7. Crosscheck database objects for complete conversion.

Manual and physical migration of database from MySQL to PostgreSQL is time consuming and tedious. In fact, data corruption or data loss may be inevitable due to human factor. Therefore, it is always good to automate the process by using a conversion software.

For that reason, a particular software company had risen to the challenge. Established in 2001, Intelligent Converters is a software company that has continually strived to introduce programming tools into the market. Their specialization includes data synchronisation, migration, and conversion. One of their creations is the MySQL to PostgreSQL converter which automates the conversion process. This converter is extremely functional and durable with as high as 20,000 records made per second. Compare this to average modern systems! This efficiency can be linked to the lack of need for middleware components to read and write data.

Cloud solutions are versions of MySQL and PostgreSQL that are supported. Also, database conversion is automated and scheduled with a customised command line version. In addition, synchronisation of data after migration with target destination is possible – PostgreSQL database.

Furthermore, this tool allows filtration of data via SELECT queries. This is handy when there is need to migrate selected records to destination database. This options allows selection of particular columns and records, with transformation of data before conversion into PostgreSQL format. Examples are;

  • Filtration of records
  • Election and renaming individual columns

These steps are programming lines. Search online for detailed definition.

It can also be necessary to modify the type of column in the target PostgreSQL database. This is done through ‘custom column mapping’. This physical feature allows the modification of default value, type, name, and NULL-attribute for columns and tables while other columns cab be exempted from conversion.

Data can also be exported into SQL script if the target PostgreSQL server disallows remote connection. By mode of operation, a local file containing SQL-statements receives the source database.  Then tables with respective indexes and constraints are created after which they are filled with data. The generated script file is imported to PostgreSQL server. The data administrator uses standard tools like phpPgAdmin or psql at this stage.

Wiltshire Farm Foods Manchester receives fourth royal honour

Manchester-based ready meal provider, Wiltshire Farm Foods, has been awarded a King’s Awards for Enterprise in Sustainable Development 2024.

Regarded as the UK’s highest business accolade, it is the fourth time the company has received the Royal honour, having previously won three Queen’s Awards for Enterprise.

The company’s ambitious closed-loop recycling scheme – which involves customers returning food trays back to drivers where 100% of them are subsequently recycled into new trays – is a world-first initiative on an industrial scale.

This groundbreaking project has seen 25 million trays be recycled to date; an achievement which gained considerable recognition from the award body and helped to secure this prestigious win.

Manchester regional sales and operations manager, Andy Cooper, said: “On behalf of the whole team, we are so proud to be recognised with a King’s Awards for our closed-loop recycling tray scheme.

“This is all down to the tireless work from our drivers and their relationships with our customers – getting them involved in doing their bit for the environment has been a real motivator and something they really enjoy being a part of.

“It’s a brilliant example of teamwork at its best!”

The award also recognises parent company apetito’s commitment to doing business in a way that positively impacts on the environment. Its ambition to reach Net Zero by 2040 and its dedication to meet challenging short-term targets for carbon reduction, demonstrates how the company is committed to supporting climate change.

Who will England face at Euro 2024?

0

The final three spots at this summer’s UEFA Euro 2024 have finally been determined. There were 12 teams still hopeful of securing progression through to the Germany-hosted showpiece this June and July however, those have been whittled to just three, all of whom have successfully punched their ticket.

Poland broke Welsh hearts in Cardiff with a penalty shootout victory while Ukraine came from behind to defeat Iceland through a late strike from Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk. The story of the playoffs however goes to Georgia. Despite playing for over an hour with ten men, they successfully defeated 2004 champions Greece on penalties in Tbilisi to secure their spot at the European Championships for the first time in history.

England have already secured their spot after topping a difficult-looking qualifying group ahead of reigning champions Italy and the aforementioned Ukraine. But who will they face at the tournament once it gets underway?

Two down, two to go

With the tournament just a matter of months away, UK gambling sites have made the Three Lions the 3/1 favourites to lift the trophy this year. Should they manage to live up to the billing it would be the first major trophy that an England men’s team have lifted since winning the World Cup way back in 1966.

But with teams such as France – who eliminated Gareth Southgate’s side from the most recent World Cup in Qatar – also in the mix, victory is by no means guaranteed,

England had the chance to show to the rest of the continent that they were rightfully considered the frontrunners with two high-profile friendly matches to aid their preparations for this summer.

The first of those was against Brazil, however teenage sensation Endrick ensured that it was the Selecao that ran out victorious. Three days later, it was Belgium’s turn to visit the home of football, and the hosts were once again unconvincing. The visitors twice took the lead through Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, only to be twice pegged back firstly through Ivan Toney and then thanks to Jude Bellingham’s last-gasp equaliser.

Now, there are only two games between England and the Euros. The first of those is against Bosnia on June 3, and the second against Iceland on June 7.

The road to Berlin

Euro 2024 officially kicks off on June 14 when hosts Germany battle it out with underdogs Scotland at the Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich. England will have to wait two days until their campaign gets underway when they face Serbia in Gelsenkirchen. They will then head to Frankfurt four days on from that for a rematch of the Euro 2020 semifinal with Denmark, before concluding their group stage responsibilities against Slovakia in Cologne on June 25.

Since the tournament’s expansion to 24 teams eight years ago, it’s difficult to predict who England will face in the second round if they top Group C as expected. However, if they progress as runners-up, they will likely face Germany in a mouthwatering clash in Dortmund on June 29. if they do top the group and then make it to the quarterfinals, more battles against heartbreakers Italy and Croatia could be on the horizon.

New Data Identifies UK Regions with Highest Asbestos Levels

Recent statistics released by Asbestos Sampling reveal the UK regions most afflicted by asbestos. The data, derived from 5,338 samples analysed throughout 2023 using the company’s own testing kits, shows that homes in the East of England has the highest incidence of asbestos in residential properties.

Specifically, 38% of the analysed samples from the East of England contained asbestos, surpassing the national average of 30%. Following closely were the South East and South West, each with 36%, and Wales at 34%.

Conversely, Northern Ireland displayed the lowest incidence, with only 13% of samples testing positive for asbestos. The East Midlands also showed lower rates, with 21% positive tests.

The analysed samples, taken from various materials such as Artex, cement pipes, cement roofing, and floor tiles, highlighted that cement roofing samples were the most contaminated, with a 64% positive test rate. Cement pipes and floor tiles had 57% and 43% respectively. In contrast, only 2% of insulation samples contained asbestos, marking it as the least likely to be contaminated.

Stephen Roche, Co-founder of Asbestos Sampling, stated:

“Our analysis of materials tested for asbestos during 2023 shows significant regional variations, with the East of England emerging as the region most likely to have asbestos present. That said, asbestos remains a concern for the health of individuals up and down the UK, serving as a stark reminder of the need to be vigilant for its presence. We would encourage anyone due to undertake work on a property which could contain asbestos to get an asbestos survey carried out before that work commences.”

Tom Yates, Co-founder, added:

“We are unsure of the reason behind the regional variations. The data being presented in our findings is restricted to samples submitted to us and may not be an accurate representation of the whole industry. As such, assumptions should never be made with materials which could contain asbestos, regardless of which region they are found – Always have suspect materials tested before working on them”
