INTO University Partnerships is excited to launch “Return & Connect“, a new service that combines a digital platform with physical support to empower international students with superior career opportunities, effectively bridging the gap between education and employment worldwide.

Designed to support international students as they return to their native countries post-study, the platform connects them with robust employer and alumni networks to secure vital in-market work experience and post-study work placements.

This service is a collaborative innovation by INTO and its partners across universities in the UK, US, and Australia, effectively bringing together academic institutions, students, alumni, and employers under one integrated system.

Universities can also enhance their presence and support for students through teaming up with market-based career experts, which INTO will facilitate. A wider variety of flexible subscription and revenue sharing models will be available as the initiative is rolled out.

McIlroy tells feuding PGA and LIV tours to learn from Northern Ireland peace process

Rory McIlroy has called on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf to take inspiration from the Northern Ireland peace process and reach a compromise which allows the sport to thrive again.

A bitter dispute has split the world of golf in two since LIV Golf held its first events in 2022, using the financial power of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to prise big names away from the PGA.

Last June, the two parties agreed to pursue a merger with a deadline of December 31 for a final agreement to be struck, but that date came and went with no further announcement.

The LIV circuit has continued to recruit leading players in recent months, with December’s swoop for two-time major champion Jon Rahm perhaps the biggest coup yet for the breakaway tour.

McIlroy – who has been a staunch critic of LIV – has called on the two parties to use the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which brought peace to his native Northern Ireland, as inspiration.

“I liken it to when Northern Ireland went through the peace process in the ’90s and the Good Friday Agreement. Neither side was happy,” McIlroy said ahead of this week’s Wells Fargo Championship.

“Catholics weren’t happy, Protestants weren’t happy, but it brought peace and then you just sort of learn to live with whatever has been negotiated, right?

“That was in 1998, and 20, 25, 30 years ahead, my generation doesn’t know any different. It’s just this is what it’s always been like, and we’ve never known anything but peace.

“That’s my way of trying to think about it and trying to make both sides see that there could be a compromise here.

“It’s probably not going to feel great for either side, but if it’s a place where the game of golf starts to thrive again and we can all get back together, then I think that’s ultimately a really good thing.”

While McIlroy is keen for a resolution to be found, he will not return to the PGA Tour policy board – which he left in November 2023 – in a bid to directly influence the talks.

“It just got pretty complicated and pretty messy,” McIlroy said of his time on the board. “With the way it happened, it opened up some wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before.

“I think there was a subset of people on the board who were uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason. I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing.”

Andy Murray set to return from ankle injury at Geneva Open

Andy Murray is set to make his comeback from injury at the Geneva Open later this month, it was revealed on Wednesday morning.

The 36-year-old – who is expected to make 2024 his final season before retiring from playing – has not competed since tearing ankle ligaments in a third round defeat to Tomas Machac at the Miami Open on March 25.

Murray opted not to have surgery on the injury, widely taken as a sign he had an eye on a potential Wimbledon swansong in early July.

He has however been included in the field with a wildcard for the Swiss tournament which starts on May 18, the week before the French Open begins.

Murray lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2016 final at Roland Garros but injuries mean he has only played on the clay of the French Open once since 2017 – that coming in 2020.

Paris will also play host to the Olympics this summer and the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Gold medallist may be tempted by the prospect of bowing out from competition at Paris 2024 – the top 56 in the world rankings on June 10 will qualify directly for the competition, which starts on July 24.

Murray has previously admitted: “I’m likely not going to play past this summer. I get asked about it after every match that I play – I’m bored of the question, to be honest.

“I’m not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop, but yes, I don’t plan on playing much past this summer.”

Repair works begins on Manchester’s iconic viaduct and gantry

A significant heritage restoration project has begun at one of Manchester’s landmark museums.

The Science and Industry Museum in Castlefield, sits on the site of the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station at the heart of the world’s first industrial city.

Essential repair work is now taking place to restore its iconic 1830 Viaduct and the gantry connected to the Power Hall, a piece of once cutting-edge technology that shows how the historic station was transformed into a busy goods depot. Both structures are long-standing symbols of Manchester’s industrial past.

The 1830 Viaduct is in need of essential repairs to reverse historic water ingress and protect it from predicted increase in rainfall, while the gantry requires old paint to be stripped, rust removed and areas impacted by water damage, repaired.

This next stage of conservation work is part of a multi-million-pound restoration programme taking place across the Science and Industry Museum’s globally significant site.

Visitors will be able to see engineering in action as scaffolding is erected around the gantry to enable much-needed repair and conservation works. Innovative waterproofing solutions are also being put in place across the 1830 Viaduct to futureproof it for years to come.

These works have been made possible by the museum’s current £14.2 million worth of national capital funding by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to complete urgent repairs across New Warehouse, the gantry and the 1830 Viaduct.

The Science and Industry Museum celebrates ideas that change the world, from the Industrial Revolution to today and beyond. It’s uniquely placed to tell this story – on the site of the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway (formerly known as Liverpool Road Station), in the heart of the world’s first industrial city.

The 1830 Viaduct is part of the site’s original railway station, which opened in September 1830. Liverpool Road Station was the Manchester terminus of the world’s first inter-urban railway, which connected industrial Manchester with Liverpool’s docks. The railway’s engineer, George Stephenson, designed the Viaduct to solve the problem of Liverpool Road’s sloping land, creating a flat upper level to support the railway tracks.

Mostly hidden by the station’s buildings, the Viaduct runs from the middle of the Power Hall out towards Water Street. Together with the1830 Station, it makes up the most complete surviving early railway station complex in the world and serves as a tangible reminder of Manchester’s key role in the Industrial Revolution.

The gantry was built during the 1880s. It supported travelling cranes that moved heavy goods from one wagon to another. This was cutting-edge technology at the time and was designed to help workers handle the loads coming on and off the railway.

Sally MacDonald, director of the Science and Industry Museum, said: “We are so excited that another stage of the site’s multi-million-pound restoration project is underway. The gantry is an iconic structure in Castlefield’s skyline and we’re looking forward to repairing and restoring it for generations to come.  The 1830 Viaduct also plays such an important part in telling the story of our historic site in connecting Manchester with the wider world.

“This work may cause some disruption which we will try to keep to a minimum, but we hope visitors continue to enjoy visiting the museum where they can see live engineering and innovation in action as we continue to care for our historic site.”

The restoration work is expected to be complete by Spring 2025 when the museum also plans to reopen its iconic Power Hall. The museum will remain open throughout and is available for evening events in the Revolution Manchester Gallery and in the 1830 Warehouse across 2024 and 2025.

Oldham Temple to host charity garden party

Oldham’s iconic temple is hosting a garden party this weekend to raise money for those affected by domestic.

Shree Swaminarayan Mandir will be holding the annual event from noon until 5pm on Saturday, with money raised going to the Saheli Charity.

Saheli, which means ‘friend’ in Hindi, was founded in 1976 and has since provided a vital lifeline to women and children who are forced to leave their home because of abuse.

The temple has partnered with Saheli in the past, forming an alliance that saw 176kg in donated clothes, toys and other items collected for the charity last December.

Incredible work

Geeta Patel, one of the people managing the event, said: “Saheli group are amazing, and we all think they are doing incredible work to support and provide refuge to BAME women and children impacted by domestic abuse.

“We have been able to help Saheli before, with emergency supplies, clothing and toys for the people who use the services. We have also been looking at finding accommodation for the group.

“We are hopeful that the funds raised at this event will go on to help them even further and we are excited to see how much we can donate to them.”

The garden party, which will be held on Copster Hill Road, aims to bring the community together in support of both Saheli and local businesses.

Some of the companies involved in this event include Mahaprasad, Arts & Craft by Kalpna Bhatt, Hollywood Gym, Forever Aloe, Ekantika personalized gifts, Cakes by Nirupa, Hair by Minz and JSS Ice Rolls.

There will also be several activities for children from facepainting, mehndi artists and a bouncy castle course.

Sanjay Kerai who is the catering manager at the temple, said: “We will have Indian street food stalls run by the temple and the food will be prepared by volunteers, as well as dessert stalls from local businesses.

“We are looking forward to the event as it is always successful for the community no matter what faith.”

Donations

A few of the stalls have also decided to donate their earnings from the event to Saheli.

The temple successfully raised over £4000 for Maggie’s Oldham in 2023, a charity providing free cancer support to anyone who may need it.

Committee president, Hitesh Bhudia, said: “This is going to be another great event put on by the community team.

“After the success of the street soiree in December 2022, we have been really looking forward to this event.

“Last time we had snow and the France vs England match, but this year we are hoping for sun!”

Police chiefs given powers to sack unfit officers

The government has given police chiefs the powers to sack officers who are not fit to wear the badge.

Chief constable Stephen Watson – or his delegate – will now have responsibility for chairing misconduct hearings which decide on the removal of officers found guilty of police misconduct, allowing for greater jurisdiction over their own workforce.

The new measures have been introduced nationally across England and Wales and will also see the appointment of independent lawyers in an advisory role to chiefs and the wider panel.

Confidence

Policing minister Chris Philp said that the public need confidence that the officers who serve their community in Greater Manchester, are dedicated to keeping them safe.

He added: “The majority of officers in Greater Manchester Police are hardworking, dedicated individuals who put themselves at risk every day to keep the public safe.

“These changes will ensure that the local chief constable is given greater responsibility to boot out the small minority of officers who threaten the integrity of their force.”

In February, the government set out changes to the police disciplinary system which will mean that any officer charged with an indictable offence will be automatically suspended from duty until an outcome is reached.

This was alongside legislation that will make it easier to sack officers who fail to hold basic vetting when re-checked, as well as anyone found guilty of gross misconduct.

A welcome change

Chief constable for GMP, Stephen Watson QPM said: “We welcome this change in legislation which will allow us the increased capacity to root out and boot out more officers unfit to serve the public more quickly.

“In Greater Manchester over the last two years, we have already tripled the rate in which we’ve been dismissing officers who should not be in our uniform.

“We are using all available powers to ensure the public can have trust in their police force, including us increasingly looking to appeal for police pensions to be forfeited where applicable.

“The vast, vast majority of GMP’s officers are dedicated and compassionate professionals who are committed to making sure we are providing the best possible service for the people of GM.”

In some circumstances, chiefs will be able to delegate their role as chair of the panel to a senior officer, or staff member of equivalent grade to ensure best possible use of public and policing resources.

Professional standards and ethics Lead for the National Police Chiefs’ Council, Craig Guildford said: “I have been leading on these changes nationally with the Home Office and other stakeholders on behalf of the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC).

“This is a comprehensive suite of measures designed to expeditiously remove those who are not fit to wear the uniform.

“Chiefs will now be responsible for chairing all hearing types which gives them far greater jurisdiction over their whole workforce. It is hugely important to emphasise that the vast majority of officers are dedicated, hard-working professionals who go the extra-mile to help keep the public safe.

“Chiefs have continued to bear down on the small minority who badly let the public and the service down.”

The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Greater Manchester will also have greater responsibility for scrutinising the decisions made by dismissals panels. Following the local elections last week, the newly elected PCCs across England and Wales will now be tasked with holding those making dismissals decisions to account.

Andy Burnham pledges 10,000 new council homes in Greater Manchester by 2028

Newly re-elected mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has made tackling the housing crisis a top priority for his third term.

He has unveiled measures to increase the amount of social housing in the city-region, improve the standard of rented accommodation and end the housing crisis in Greater Manchester by 2038.

The mayor’s announcements include:

  • Creating a new GM Housing First unit which, by the end of 2024, will publish a detailed plan to deliver at least 10,000 new council homes in this mayoral term.
  • Identifying brownfield sites and land owned by public bodies for at least 1,000 of these new council homes in each GM borough.
  • A formal request to government for powers to suspend the Right to Buy on new council homes and to allow wider suspension at the request of councils in areas where pressure on social housing is greatest.
  • A pilot scheme offering residents the right to request a property check – to be rolled out across Greater Manchester by the end of 2024.
  • Opening the new GM Good Landlord Charter to applications by the summer, setting out standards for rental properties, and supporting landlords to meet them.
  • Expanding the much-valued ‘A Bed Every Night’ scheme to at least 600 places every night, to provide crucial support to rough sleepers as the national cost-of-living crisis continues, with the Mayor continuing to donate 15% of his salary each month to support the scheme.
  • A new enforcement capability that will work with councils to make greater use of compulsory purchase order (CPO) powers over non-decent and empty properties to expand the city-region’s social-rented stock.

Mr Burnham, said: “Greater Manchester can’t achieve its full potential as long as it remains in the grip of a housing crisis.  That is why I am setting a new ambition for the city-region to end it within a decade.

“Ten thousand new council homes will help to do that as long as stock can be retained.  That’s why we’re calling for the suspension of Right to Buy.

“Everyone deserves to live in a good, safe home and by building new council homes, and suspending the Right to Buy on them, we can give our councils the breathing space they desperately need to replenish their stock, so that all of those waiting in temporary accommodation or on the housing registers have the chance to access good homes.”

Access to social housing is essential to many residents in Greater Manchester, as capped rent increases provide some protection to tenants against the soaring rents seen in the private rented sector.

The average rental price of a two-bed property in Manchester increased by 12.5% between February 2023-24, against an England average of 8.9%. Limiting access to affordable social housing can therefore help fuel a rise in housing insecurity, homelessness, and families in temporary accommodation.
