Tameside Hospital increases MRI capacity with new suite installation

0

Tameside Hospital is expanding its inhouse MRI capacity thanks to some last-minute funding, and its long-term partner, Canon Medical Systems UK.

With 2.5 million more people in England projected to be living with major illness by 2040, increasing diagnostic imaging capacity has never been more important.

Playing a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as cancer, as well as many neurological and heart conditions, the demand for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is at an all-time high.

However, currently the UK has far fewer MRI scanners than nearly any other comparable country.

To address this increasing demand, Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, collaborated with its partner of 20 years, to expand its in-house MRI capacity.

Utilising last-minute funding awarded to Greater Manchester from the NHS, the hospital leveraged its long-term relationship with Canon Medical to design and deliver a bespoke, purpose-built MRI suite that will serve as a permanent solution for the hospital.

The integrated modular unit, consisting of two modules to accommodate waiting and changing rooms, houses Canon Medical’s Vantage Orian MRI system, a second MRI scanner for the hospital.

Replacing a separate external mobile unit situated in the car park, the new unit allows clinical staff to serve in-patients, as well as emergency and outpatients, within the main hospital – something that had previously not been possible.

Jennifer Riley, cross-sectional (CT/MRI) service lead radiographer at Tameside Hospital, said: “This wasn’t just a case of procuring MRI equipment to meet increasing demand. Careful consideration needed to be given to where the new system would be housed to meet the needs of both our in-patients and outpatients.

“Working with Canon Medical, we needed a permanent solution to increase MRI capacity within a very tight timeframe to meet the requirements of our funding. Ensuring accessibility and a positive patient experience, both during and post-installation, was crucial. The new suite needed to feel like part of the existing site without changing the fabric of the building. During construction, we worked hard to ensure minimal disruption to patient services.”

Matthew Kilheeney, radiology manager at Tameside Hospital, said: “At the onset of the pandemic when demand peaked and Covid restrictions were in place, Canon Medical provided us with a mobile CT scanner to increase capacity and support social distancing.

“So, when faced with the challenge of building a whole new suite, we knew we could turn to Canon Medical to help execute the whole project. They helped us roll out an end-to-end solution in under nine months – from sourcing equipment to designing and building the unit to house the MRI system.”

Over many years, Canon Medical has provided the trust with numerous diagnostic imaging solutions – including two Ultrasound systems, a fluoroscopy room and three tomography scanners.  The CT scanners feature a modular viewing platform that unifies workflows, enabling greater diagnostic productivity.

Police appeal for witnesses following Hollingworth Lake assault

0

A victim in his sixties was set upon from behind as he walked towards Lake Bank.

The injuries he sustained were not life-threatening but he did lose consciousness.

No arrests have been made at this stage.

Officers want to speak to anyone who was in the area during the busy period or witnessed someone acting suspiciously. If they saw someone carrying a grey Nike rucksack which was stolen during the incident and has not been located since, it is also of interest.

Sergeant Chris Eardley said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident which was an unprovoked attack in an area we know is visited by large groups of people, especially when the weather is nice.

“We are now in a position during our enquiries to ask for the help of the local community or anyone who was in the area last weekend to come forward if they saw something, or if they have located the lost bag which will be vital in finding out who did this.

“Our neighbourhood patrols remain in place but we understand incidents like this can cause concern and remain determined to identify the suspect as we do not tolerate acts of violence like this.

“If you do have anything to share, please get in touch by calling 101 quoting incident 1256 of May 26. Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Detectives search Worsley’s Parr Fold Park as Stuart Everett murder case continues

0

Detectives working on the murder investigation into Stuart Everett’s death have closed down a scene at Boggart Hole Clough after making significant recoveries.

A new investigation area has opened at Parr Fold Park in Worsley.

Officers have trawled hundreds of hours of CCTV and having spoken to members of the public, been able to build up a fuller timeline of events.

A torso wrapped in plastic, understood to be Stuart Everett, was discovered in Kersal Dale in Salford, back on April 4, prompting the murder inquiry.

Two men have been charged with the 67-year-old’s murder.

Detective superintendent Lewis Hughes of GMP’s Serious Crime Division said: “We have worked our way through a number of scenes, and this continues to be a big piece of work for us and the scale of this is unprecedented as we push forward with our investigation.

“Today, although we have closed our scene at Boggart Hole Clough, we will be opening another scene at Parr Fold Park in Worsley. This is also a well-used public space in Salford and we understand the disruption this may cause to those who live in the nearby area but we need to do this.

“We are working as efficiently as we can, but we need to search as thoroughly as possible for Stuart’s family so they can have the answers they need to process his death.

“We would like to thank the public for their patience and also their gratitude, as we have had a number of members of the public thanking officers for their work whilst we completed our searches at Boggart Hole Clough. We know that this is a public space that we had to close for a number of days but ultimately our searches are providing us with more evidence that we need to progress our investigation.”

Injured at work? Here’s how safety signs could have prevented it

In 2022/23, more than half a million employees registered a workplace injury. The majority of these saw no one at fault, with accidents like slips, trips and falls on the same level making up 32% of the most common workplace injuries.

If you’ve experienced an injury at work, there’s lots you and your business can do to prevent future accidents – saving time and money, and promoting happier and more productive staff.

Safety signs

Perhaps the most obvious place to start in preventing workplace injuries – safety signs can
be found in all public spaces. Workplaces with effective safety signage experience on average a 28% reduction in accidents.

The signs come in all shapes and sizes, with different colours displaying different warnings.
But when you’re in the same place day after day, it can become easy to overlook the very
signs keeping you safe. This is known as sign blindness.

The optimum location for the signs is at eye level, or around 78 inches high, to ensure
visibility from a distance.

When starting a new job, it’s a great idea to ensure your tours of the space point out the
safety signs and that the more uncommon signs are explained.

Sign blindness – colours could make all the difference

The colour of a safety sign correlates to the message. This can be helpful to know when
you’re in a fast-paced environment.

Green often shows exits, yellow signs display hazards, danger and caution, and blue often
shows mandatory things or information, such as how to lift correctly.

Some signs, particularly emergency signs, will be photoluminescent.

Signs aside – what else can you do?

Naturally, signs only go so far. They can instruct, warn, and prevent countless injuries, but
even more can be done. From keeping tidy, organising, and having correct posture, to anti-
slip matting and wearing safety equipment – there’s lots to consider when it comes to
health and safety.

Organising and zone classification

Many workers find they’re more effective when the surrounding environment is clear and
organised. No matter the industry, general housekeeping is a vital step in preventing
workplace accidents.

Spill-cleaning kits are a great place to start.

There are also recommended ways to section workplaces into zones, such as ATEX zone
classification in explosive atmospheres.

Zone classification works well for industries requiring warehouses, or other high-risk
workplaces, as it can help to contain more dangerous materials and enhance the safety of
the space.

Labelling hazardous materials is also important. Labels are essentially miniature safety signs – another vital part of all types of workplaces.

The highest-risk workplaces

You may find particular use for spill-cleaning kits in warehouses and construction sites,
which are often where the most workplace-related injuries occur. This doesn’t mean
accidents can’t happen anywhere, but it’s important to take extra precautions in higher-risk
environments. This might include additional training and more frequent health and safety checks.

It’s clear there are lots of precautions you can take to keep yourself and other employees
safe at work. Safety signs are just the beginning. Take a look around your workspace and
note where the signs are – it could save a lot of health and safety headaches.

Scottie Scheffler charges dropped after arrest at PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler has seen his charges dropped after being arrested at the PGA Championship earlier this month.

The golfing giant was picked up by police outside of Valhalla Golf club just hours before the second round of action on 17 May after trying to avoid traffic following a fatal incident earlier that morning.

He was charged with second-degree assault, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals.

But after spending the morning inside a cell, he was released and continued to play at the tournament, although he was not able to win another major title.

And now after reviewing the evidence, it has been declared that Scheffler’s actions do not warrant a criminal offence and that the incident was a misunderstanding.

After the charges were dropped, Scheffler took to Instagram to release a statement.

He said: “As I stated previously, this was an unfortunate misunderstanding.

“I hold no ill will towards officer Gillis. I wish to put this incident behind me and move on, and I hope he will do the same. Police officers have a difficult job and I hold them in high regard.

“This was a severe miscommunication in a chaotic situation.”

Usyk vs Fury rematch set for Riyadh in December

0

Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury are set for a rematch four days before Christmas, according to the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s general entertainment authority.

Usyk overcame Fury by split decision in Riyadh on May 18 to become the first undisputed champion in the 25 years of the four-belt era.

A rematch was reportedly planned for October but in a social media post Turki Alalshikh said the fight would now take place on December 21 as part of the Saudi capital’s annual entertainment season, which was launched in 2019 and has previously featured a number of high profile boxing events..

“The rematch between the undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk and the champion Tyson Fury is now scheduled on December 21 during Riyadh Season.

“The world will watch another historical fight again. Our commitment to boxing fans continues. We hope you enjoy it.”

Usyk added Fury’s WBC belt to his WBA, WBO and IBF collection to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.

The 37-year-old Ukrainian extended his record to 22 wins from 22 fights while inflicting the first defeat of 35-year-old Fury’s professional career, which has spanned 16 years.

The first Fury-Usyk clash was originally scheduled for Riyadh Season in 2023 but was twice delayed, initially by Fury’s fight with Francis Ngannou, which he won via a controversial split decision, and then a cut Fury sustained in sparring.

It is expected the rematch will see at most three belts at stake as Usyk will reportedly be stripped of the IBF title if he fails to face its mandatory challenger in his next bout.

Workforce On-the-Go: Effective Strategies in Managing a Mobile Workforce

0

Today’s global business landscape poses opportunities and challenges to entrepreneurs. From managing daily operations to a mobile workforce, business owners must ensure productivity, efficiency, and satisfaction in all parts of the supply chain.

This article outlines effective strategies for managing your employees wherever they are in the world.

Embracing technology for communication and collaboration

Robust tools for communication

Regardless of your business nature, effective communication is crucial for effective workforce management. By using platforms such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom, teams can send messages in real-time, engage in video conferencing, and share files to maintain effective communication.

Implementing software for collaboration

Effective workforce management goes beyond communication; it should also promote team collaboration. Software like Asana, Trello, and Monday.com can help team members stay aligned and informed by allowing progress tracking, task assignments, and status updates. By using this software, everyone, including you, is on the same page.

Fostering a culture of trust and accountability

Clear expectations are vital

Managing a mobile workforce takes a lot of trust. This is why you must set clear expectations for your employees from the start. Tell them what you expect of them in terms of:

  • Work hours
  • Availability
  • Output
  • Quality

Setting these expectations early and clearly prevents misunderstandings and ensures that everyone works towards the same goals.

Encouraging self-management

Leveraging a mobile workforce for business success should also include promoting self-management. You should allow your employees to see over themselves, empowering them to perform tasks and deliver quality outcomes. You can also use tools that track their time and productivity to let your employees take a look at their work habits without feeling invaded.

Fuel cards for optimising operational efficiency

Streamlining fuel management

Whether it’s for sales or providing goods and services, many businesses tend to have a workforce who frequently travels. In these cases, it’s best that you manage travel expenses efficiently with the use of fuel cards. These cards, like those offered by radius.com, can provide a streamlined solution for fuel expenses. Using fuel cards can help you track how much your mobile workforce spends on fuel, allowing you to make more informed decisions.

Enhancing security and convenience

Another benefit of using fuel cards for your mobile workforce is security and convenience. Unlike cash and company credit cards, fuel cards are less prone to fraud. In addition, your fleet is also eligible for perks and benefits as they use them. Such perks and benefits include the following.

  • Discounts on fuel purchases
  • Loyalty programs
  • Acceptance at many petrol stations
  • Simplifying the process of reclaiming VAT and other taxes on fuel purchases

Promoting employee well-being and development

Work-life balance equals employee satisfaction

Employees’ lives don’t revolve only around work—their private lives also matter. When they feel that their job responsibilities significantly interfere with their personal life and relaxation, you may end up losing your workforce, mobile or not. This is why you should always encourage a healthy work-life balance, providing your mobile workforce with flexibility in work hours and recognising any signs of burnout. Doing so can ensure enhanced productivity, efficiency, and satisfaction.

Loyalty is future-proofing employees

Employees are often threatened by being replaced by AI, so why not future-proof them? You should provide your mobile workforce with learning and advancement opportunities to keep them engaged, motivated, and relevant in the job market.

Maximise your mobile workforce today

Managing your mobile workforce requires a mixture of technology, adaptability, and a focus on trust and employee welfare. When you know how your mobile workforce works, you can make the most out of them without making them feel worn out.
