Why Employee Wellbeing Is Crucial and How to Prioritise It

0

Employee wellbeing is a crucial aspect of any business, yet it is often overlooked. The well-being of employees can have a significant impact on their productivity, engagement, and overall job satisfaction. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of employee well-being, and many companies are now investing in programs to promote it.

Research has shown that employees who feel supported and valued by their employers are more likely to be engaged and committed to their work. This, in turn, leads to increased productivity, higher levels of job satisfaction, and lower rates of absenteeism. In contrast, employees who feel neglected or undervalued are more likely to experience burnout, stress, and other negative health outcomes.

So, why is employee well-being so important, and what can companies do to promote it? This article will explore these questions in depth, providing insights into the benefits of employee well-being and practical tips for creating a workplace culture that supports it.

  • The Impact of Employee Wellbeing on Productivity
  • Employee Wellbeing and Organizational Culture
  • Legal and Ethical Considerations
  • Strategies for Promoting Employee Wellbeing
  • Monitoring and Evaluating Wellbeing Initiatives

The Impact of Employee Wellbeing on Productivity

Employee wellbeing has a significant impact on productivity levels in the workplace. When employees are physically and mentally healthy, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated, resulting in higher productivity levels.

One study found that companies with high levels of employee wellbeing had a 21% increase in productivity compared to those with low levels of employee wellbeing. This increase in productivity can be attributed to several factors, including reduced absenteeism, improved job satisfaction, and increased employee engagement.

When employees feel supported and valued by their employer, they are more likely to be loyal and committed to the company. This can lead to increased productivity as employees are willing to go above and beyond their job requirements to ensure the success of the company.

Employers can take several steps to improve employee wellbeing and, in turn, increase productivity. This can include offering wellness programs, providing flexible work arrangements, and creating a positive work environment.

Overall, the impact of employee wellbeing on productivity cannot be overstated. By prioritizing employee wellbeing, companies can create a more engaged and productive workforce, leading to increased success and profitability.

Employee Wellbeing and Organizational Culture

A positive organizational culture can have a significant impact on employee wellbeing. When employees feel valued, supported and respected, they are more likely to feel engaged, motivated and committed to their work. This, in turn, can lead to increased productivity, reduced absenteeism and better overall job satisfaction.

Organizational culture can be defined as the shared values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that characterize an organization. It is shaped by a range of factors, including leadership style, communication practices, and the way in which employees are treated.

A positive organizational culture is one that prioritizes employee wellbeing, and takes steps to create a supportive and inclusive working environment. This can include offering flexible working arrangements, providing opportunities for professional development, and promoting work-life balance.

In addition to these practical measures, it is important for organizations to foster a culture of open communication and collaboration. This can help to build trust between employees and management, and create a sense of shared purpose and belonging. By prioritizing employee wellbeing and creating a positive organizational culture, organizations can not only improve the wellbeing of their employees, but also enhance their overall performance and success.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Ensuring employee wellbeing is not only beneficial for the employees themselves, but also for the employer. However, there are legal and ethical considerations that must be taken into account when implementing wellbeing initiatives in the workplace.

One important consideration is ensuring compliance with laws and regulations related to employee privacy and confidentiality. Employers must ensure that any personal information collected from employees is kept confidential and used only for the purpose of improving employee wellbeing.

Employers must also be aware of potential discrimination issues that may arise when implementing wellbeing initiatives. It is important to ensure that all employees have equal access to wellbeing programs and that no employee is unfairly excluded.

In addition, employers must ensure that any wellbeing initiatives do not conflict with employees’ rights to rest and breaks as mandated by labor laws. Employers must also ensure that any initiatives do not pose a risk to employee safety or health.

Overall, while employee wellbeing is important, employers must ensure that any initiatives are implemented legally and ethically that respects employees’ rights and privacy.

Strategies for Promoting Employee Wellbeing

There are several strategies that employers can implement to promote employee wellbeing. These strategies can help to create a positive work environment and improve the overall health and wellbeing of employees.

Encourage Physical Activity

Encouraging physical activity is a great way to promote employee wellbeing. Employers can provide on-site fitness classes or gym memberships to promote physical activity. They can also encourage employees to take breaks throughout the day to stretch and move around.

Provide Healthy Snacks

Providing healthy snacks is another way to promote employee wellbeing. Employers can offer fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthy snacks in the break room. This can help employees make healthier food choices throughout the day.

Offer Protective Workwear

Providing protective workwear is important for promoting employee wellbeing in certain industries. Employers can provide protective gear such as helmets, goggles, and gloves to keep employees safe on the job. This can help to reduce the risk of injury and improve employee wellbeing.

Encourage Work-Life Balance

Encouraging work-life balance is another way to promote employee wellbeing. Employers can offer flexible work schedules or remote work options to help employees balance their work and personal lives. This can help to reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing.

Provide Mental Health Support

Providing mental health support is important for promoting employee wellbeing. Employers can offer employee assistance programs (EAPs) or other mental health resources to help employees manage stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. This can help to improve overall wellbeing and reduce absenteeism.

By implementing these strategies, employers can promote employee wellbeing and create a positive work environment. This can help to improve employee retention, productivity, and overall business success.

Monitoring and Evaluating Wellbeing Initiatives

To ensure the effectiveness of wellbeing initiatives, it is important to have a system in place to monitor and evaluate their impact. This will allow organizations to identify what is working and what needs improvement, and make necessary adjustments to improve employee wellbeing.

One way to monitor wellbeing initiatives is through regular surveys or assessments. These can be conducted at regular intervals to gather feedback from employees about their experiences with the initiatives. It is important to ensure that these surveys are anonymous to encourage honest and open feedback.

Another way to monitor wellbeing initiatives is through data analysis. This involves collecting data on various aspects of employee wellbeing, such as absenteeism rates, turnover rates, and productivity levels. By analyzing this data, organizations can identify trends and patterns that may indicate the effectiveness of their wellbeing initiatives.

To evaluate the impact of wellbeing initiatives, organizations can use a variety of methods, such as focus groups, interviews, and case studies. These methods can provide valuable insights into the experiences of employees and the effectiveness of the initiatives.

It is important to note that monitoring and evaluating wellbeing initiatives should be an ongoing process. This will allow organizations to make necessary adjustments and improvements to ensure that their initiatives are meeting the needs of their employees and promoting overall wellbeing.

Eight years behind bars: Oldham man jailed for heinous sexual crimes

0

An Oldham man who subjected his victim to multiple oral rapes has been jailed for eight years.

Luke Charlton (27) of Chancery Lane, Shaw, was given the sentence on Wednesday at Minshull Street Crown Court, having pleaded guilty to three counts of rape earlier that day.

A painstaking investigation began in November 2022, after the victim found a video on Charlton’s phone, appearing to show him forcing her into performing a sexual act on him while she was asleep.

She had no recollection of it ever happening.

Whilst Charlton pleaded that this had only happened once, police forensic experts proved this a lie by uncovering multiple videos, showing a repeated pattern of orally raping the victim whilst she slept.

She was taking strong medication which would make it difficult for her to wake during these incidents.

Detective sergeant Kate Dawson of Oldham CID said: “The acts Charlton committed are nothing short of depraved.

“The victim has been incredibly brave. What she had been through is something no-one should ever be put through, and the fact she has remained so strong throughout this investigation and court process should be recognised.

“The defendant offered no comment in interview, not admitting to what he had done. Unfortunately for him, a tenacious team of detectives and staff were committed to leaving no stone unturned in this investigation, to get justice for the victim.

“I know how difficult it can be to come forward about being the victim of sexual offences, but support is available from police, GM Victim Services, and other external agencies and charities, to help you through the process. I would encourage anyone who has been through something similar to contact us, so that we can investigate.”

How to get help

If you or someone you know has been raped or sexually assaulted, we encourage you not to suffer in silence and report it to the police, or a support agency so you can get the help and support available. You can contact GMP on 101, on our website, or 999 in an emergency.

Police were called to Mauldeth Road West at 11.52am on Friday, to reports of a road traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 22-year-old woman, passed away at hospital the same day, as a result of her injuries.

Two men, aged 18 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. One has been released with no further action and another has been bailed whilst officers conduct further enquiries.

Sergeant Andrew Page said: “Our thoughts are with this young woman’s family at this tragic time. They are being supported by specially trained officers and we will continue to do all we can to get answers for them.

“If you witnessed anything, or you have any further information, we’d be grateful if you come forward and help with our enquiries.

“This could be an eyewitness account from the scene, doorbell footage, CCTV or dashcam footage. It can all be used to help us establish how a young woman lost her life in such distressing circumstances.

“Anyone with information or detail is encouraged to contact us directly on 0161 856 4741 or 101 quoting incident 1260 of 31/05/24. Alternatively, if you would prefer to remain anonymous, details can be passed to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The Manchester Culture Awards are back for 2024

0

Nominations are now open for The Manchester Culture Awards 2024.

The awards, launched in 2018, recognise the city’s cultural and creative highlights from the grassroots up, over the last year.

They recognise individuals, events, and organisations big and small, that together help make Manchester the vibrant and exciting place for culture and the arts it is.

Nominations are accepted across 12 different categories, including Best Event, Best Performance, Best Exhibition and Young Creative of the Year, as well as other awards that shine a spotlight on some of the important themes of our times such as health and well-being, the environment, and social justice.

The Manchester People’s Culture Award will be presented to an individual or organisation whose dedication and contribution to culture in Manchester stands above the rest and deserves to be recognised, with the final winner of the award chosen by public vote.

Nominees for each of the awards must either be based in the city of Manchester, or have a strong track record of delivering activity for the benefit of people who live in or visit the city, or that benefits the local economy. Nominations are welcomed from professional, amateur and community sectors.

Core of city life

All nominations must reflect activity that has taken place between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024 – apart from the Manchester People’s Culture Award, which recognises achievement over a number of years.

To be recognised for a Manchester Culture Award, nominees must be involved in one or more of the following areas: visual art, music, theatre, performance, dance, film and broadcast media, literature, digital art, photography, craft, or heritage arts.

Manchester City Council deputy leader Garry Bridges said: “Culture, creativity and the arts are at the core of city life in Manchester and a huge part of what makes Manchester such a great place to live, work and visit.

“With a richly diverse talent pool of artists and other creatives on our doorstep living and working here, it’s no surprise that we’re a city that embraces culture in all its forms and fully recognises the social as well as economic benefits it brings.

“The huge response we’ve had over the past five years to the Manchester Culture Awards since they first began clearly show the city really is alive with creative activity, and the brilliant nominations – that come in each year in their hundreds – are further proof of that.

“The creative scene here in Manchester is fantastic and we can’t wait to get this year’s nominations in and hear more about who you think deserves an award.”

Nominations close at midnight on June 27.

Rob Burrow: Leeds announce death of rugby league star aged 41

Rugby league legend Rob Burrow has died aged 41, Leeds Rhinos have announced.

Eight-time Super League winner Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) two years after retiring following a playing career spanning 17 seasons.

“Rob inspired the entire country with his brave battle against motor neurone disease since his diagnosis in December 2019,” Leeds said.

“He passed away peacefully at Pinderfield’s Hospital, near his home surrounded by his loving family, after becoming ill earlier this week.

“Burrow played his entire career with Leeds Rhinos and won every honour with the club as part of their golden generation.

“A hard-working and dedicated player, his fearless performances made him one of the most respected players in the Rhinos ranks.”

Burrow, who also played for England and Great Britain, worked closely with former Rhinos team-mate Kevin Sinfield to raise funds and support the MND community.

Leeds confirmed that a new centre for MND in Leeds named after Burrow will be opened as planned in his honour on Monday.

Burrow is survived by wife Lindsey and children Macy, Maya and Jackson, who called him a “true inspiration”.

“He never allowed others to define what he could achieve and believed in his own ability to do more,” a family statement added.

“The outpouring of love and support that Rob and the whole Burrow family have received over the last four-and-a-half years meant so much to Rob.

“In particular, the rugby league family and the MND community have rallied around Rob to inspire him. Thank you for your support.

“For those who knew Rob throughout his life, his determination and spirit in the face of MND came as no surprise.

“Rob never accepted that he couldn’t do something, he just found his own way of doing it better than anyone else. He will continue to inspire us all every day. In a world full of adversity, we must dare to dream.”

Jake Paul “heartbroken” after Tyson fight postponed

Jake Paul says he is “heartbroken” that his fight with Mike Tyson has had to be postponed.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer’s bout with Tyson will be rescheduled after the 57-year-old suffered an ‘ulcer flare-up’ on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on May 26.

Tyson says his recovery is going well but he would not be ready for the original fight date of July 20.

The clash had already attracted plenty of criticism for the age gap between the fighters with Paul 30 years younger than his veteran opponent and it’s unlikely recent developments will quieten those that think Tyson should stop away from the ring.

Nevertheless, Paul insists the bout will go ahead and hinted at a date towards the end of the year.

He said on X: “Obviously, devastating news. I’m heartbroken, speechless, gutted. We’ve been working so hard over here in this camp.

“I just feel bad for everyone involved in this event, the undercard. The opportunity has been ripped from all of us.

“I do value Mike’s health first and foremost, love that guy. I have so much respect for him and I want Mike to be healthy.

“And he says he is still going to knock me out and I bought myself some time, so Mike is still talking s**t over there.  You said you wanna do this in Q4, I’m ready, you just need a little bit of time, so I’m ready whenever you are.

“This is too big of an opportunity and I think this fight is going to change the world and I (will) turn all my Ls into Ws and that’s a motto I live by so…

“The universe makes no mistakes so let’s see what’s in store. But sorry this didn’t work out to everyone, the fans, love you guys.”

Tyson thanked his fans for their “support and understanding”.

“I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover,” he said.

“My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon.

“Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good.

“I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”

Jake Paul v Mike Tyson: Date postponed for fight, ulcer to blame

Mike Tyson’s boxing match against Jake Paul has been postponed because of an “ulcer flare-up” suffered by the former heavyweight champion of the world.

Pugilist icon Tyson suffered an emergency medical issue on a flight which caused paramedics to be called when the aircraft landed.

Writing on social media after an incident which was said to have been caused by a stomach ulcer, Tyson wrote: “Now feeling 100%, even though I don’t need to be to beat Jake Paul.”

The officially-sanctioned bout of eight two-minute rounds had been scheduled for July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Texas. A new date is expected to be announced on June 7.

“During a follow-up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations,” a statement said.

Tyson v Paul date changed

Tyson, who will be 58 when he steps in the ring, thanked his fans for their “support and understanding”.

Tyson has not fought in an official bout since 2003, while rookie Paul – better known as a social media personality – has tended to face faded athletes from sports outside of boxing.

“I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night,” the 27-year-old said.

“My fans know I don’t want to face ‘Iron Mike’ at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake: when he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish.

“Paul vs Tyson will be one for the ages, and I promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime match-up.”

Carlos Alcaraz: French Open 2024 win v Korda ‘like marathon’

Third seed Carlos Alcaraz likened his straight-sets win over Sebastian Korda at the French Open 2024 to a marathon after reaching the fourth round of the grand slam.

Spaniard Alcaraz, who is yet to fully recover from an arm injury, broke at 5-4 to win the first set against the 27th seed and needed a tie-break to win the second after both players secured breaks.

The third set was more straightforward for the contender in a 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 night-session victory.

“I was not worried,” said Alcaraz, calling Korda “a great player and a really good ball striker.”

“I know my skills and that it is really difficult for him as well. It is difficult to play against him. I had to run a lot. It was like a marathon for me.”

Alcaraz v Korda ‘really good’

Despite his protestations, Alcaraz made a tricky test look reasonably routine against the 23-year-old, whose sister, Nelly, is the world’s number one female golfer.

“I’m feeling amazing,” said Alcaraz. “I feel great playing on this court. I have great memories playing on this court.

“I’m feeling better and better every match I play here. Every day, it’s even better. It’s amazing to play in the second week at Paris.”

Alcaraz compared his performance favourably to his four-set win over world number 176 Jesper de Jong in the second round.

“Hopefully, I can keep going,” he added. “It was a really good match. I played really well – much better than the previous match.

“This is something I really wanted: just to get in the rally, play some good points and feel like myself on the court. I did that really well.”

The 21-year-old is aiming to build on his best ever run at the major last year, when he was beaten in four sets in the semi-finals by champion Novak Djokovic.

Alcaraz has won two Grand Slam titles, adding last year’s Wimbledon title to the US Open trophy he lifted in 2022.

He will meet America’s Ben Shelton, the 15th seed, or Canadian 21st seed Felix Auger Aliassime next. The match between the pair was delayed by rain while Alcaraz was on court on Friday.

UFC 302: Makhachev v Poirier – date, time, how to watch, TV channels and online stream

Islam Makhachev will defend his UFC lightweight title at UFC 302 on Saturday following an acrimonious build-up between the champion and veteran Dustin Poirier.

Russian Makhachev and American Poirier had to be separated during their face-off when the challenger’s swearing upset his opponent.

“I’m going to knock you out,” former interim titlist Poirier told Makhachev. “Sleep. I’m going to sleep-stop you.

“You’re going to be diving for my legs, praying. You’re going to be diving for my legs. You’re going to be laying and praying, that’s what you’re going to be doing.”

The showdown in New Jersey will be Makhachev’s third defence of the belt he won in October 2022.

“I am the best fighter in the world,” the 32-year-old said. “That’s why it’s going to be a bad day for Dustin.

“When he faces high-level fighters who have good wrestling and grappling, he always has the same problems.”

Both fighters made weight on Friday. “He’s definitely a finisher,” acknowledged Poirier. “This isn’t going the distance. One of us is going down hard.”
