Olympics 2024: Sky Brown wins back-to-back bronze medals despite shoulder injury

Team GB’s Sky Brown shook off a shoulder injury to win bronze in the women’s skateboarding park final.

The 16-year-old had been seen clutching her dislocated shoulder suffered last week after falling during Tuesday’s preliminary round.

Brown risked further aggrevating it after a fall at the end of her first run in the final but showed no signs of any issues in a superb final run which earned her the bronze medal.

A sensational score of 92.31 placed her on the podium, with Australia’s Arisa Trew, 14, taking gold with 93.18 and Japan’s Kokona Hiraki scoring 92.63 for silver.

It was Brown’s second Olympic medal after also winning bronze in Tokyo as a 13-year-old three years ago, while she won gold at the World Championships last year and bronze in 2019.

Spendolini-Sirieix misses out on medal

There was disappointment for GB diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix in the women’s 10m platform final.

The 19-year-old, who won bronze in the 10m synchro final last week, finished sixth in the overall standings, with Quan Hongchan of China winning gold.

Spendolini-Sirieix looked visibly upset when leaving the pool but the teenager insisted she was not upset about the result as she opened up on her mental health issues.

She said: “Three years ago I didn’t even want to be alive, so today I’m just happy that I am alive, I’m breathing and I’ve got my family to support me …

“After Tokyo, it was really scary time for myself, and so that’s why I treasure every morning, because it’s like my eyes have woken up.

“I’ve got breath. I’ve got food on the table. I’ve got water in my cup, and I’ve got a roof over my head. So, you know, sometimes the Olympic medal isn’t everything.

“We’ve got other things, so we really should be more thankful for and those are the things that we unfortunately take for granted … I feel like there’s a lot of struggles there. Everyone doesn’t see and that we push through silently.”

Novak Djokovic: Summer Olympics 2024 win ‘belongs to Serbia’

Tennis great Novak Djokovic has said he “believed in the impossible” on his way to winning gold at the Summer Olympics 2024, dedicating his remarkable triumph in Paris to the population of his homeland of Serbia.

Two months after withdrawing from the French Open with a knee injury which required surgery, Djokovic avenged his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final in July by beating the Spaniard in straight sets in the final at the Games, becoming the fifth singles player to win the ‘Golden Slam’ of all four grand slam titles and Olympic gold.

There had been doubts over whether the 37-year-old would be able to play at either tournament, and Djokovic said he had been inspired by his compatriots.

Djokovic Olympics ‘dream’

“I could never give up on the dream of winning this gold medal, just as the people of Serbia have never given up on me,” the world number two said.

“Together, we believed in the impossible. While I may be the one holding this medal, I want every Serbian to know that it belongs to all of us.

“Representing our nation is the greatest honour in the world. This medal, these moments, this life — none of it would have been possible without your unwavering support. This is because of you. This is for you.”

Djokovic Serbia record

Born in Belgrade, Djokovic is said to live in Monte Carlo and own properties in cities including Miami, New York and Marbella.

Djokovic captained Serbia to their first Davis Cup title in 2010 and victory in the inaugural ATP Cup title in 2020.

He first represented his country in the Davis Cup in 2004 and has a singles record of 40 wins and eight defeats in the showpiece.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion dropped to the floor in tears after beating world number three Alcaraz at Roland Garros before celebrating with his family in the stands.

Alcaraz’s victory at Wimbledon meant Djokovic is still seeking the one major title he requires to eclipse the record he shares with Margaret Court and become the most successful player of all time.

Serbia’s other gold medal so far at the 2024 Games came in the shooting mixed team air pistol event, which was won by Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec.

Council leader calls for compassion following weekend protests

0

Manchester City Council’s leader has called for compassion, understanding and solidarity following protests in Manchester and across the country this weekend.

Many businesses and shops were targeted and damaged in the city centre, following misinformation spread about the person behind the stabbings of three young girls in Southport last week.

Officers made five arrests on Saturday and a further fourteen arrests on Sunday in relation to offences for being drunk and disorderly, possession of a weapon, assault, criminal damage, and violent disorder.

One bartender in the city centre told Business Manchester, “It was horrendous. We had to close the pub three times yesterday because of the unrest. We locked the customers inside to keep them safe.”

Councillor Bev Craig (pictured) said: “Following a weekend that saw a number of serious incidents of unrest in towns and cities across the country, we know that our communities will be feeling understandably anxious and uneasy. We would like to reassure our residents that we will not tolerate disorder in our streets.

“Manchester’s diversity is our strength, and it is now more important than ever that we support one another with compassion, understanding and solidarity.

“I am deeply conscious that some of our communities, especially minority communities, are anxious about discrimination, abuse, anti-Muslim sentiment and racism – much of which is playing out on social media, alongside misinformation and other forms of hate.”

She said the council would continue to work alongside Greater Manchester Police to ensure Manchester remains a welcoming and safe place. There would be an increased police presence in neighbourhoods, she said.

Craig added: “There is no justification for criminal behaviour and the actions of the perpetrators undermine everything that Manchester stands for.

“We are proud to be a vibrant, tolerant and accepting place – and we know there is more that unites us than divides us. Now is the time we come together to show what this means.

“There is no place for hate in our city.”

Stephen Watson, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police said: “I want to thank the vast majority of law-abiding citizens of Greater Manchester who either stayed away from events over the weekend, or who took part by sharing their views in a way that did not break the law, but which upheld our democratic right to peaceful protest. However, it was clear that across all events, there were people of all political and cultural backgrounds who attended with the intent of causing trouble and breaking the law.

“There are consequences for inciting hate and causing damage, and those who have broken the law will be held accountable for their actions. Where arrests have been made, charges have been quickly sought and some offenders have already appeared before the courts and we expect to make further arrests. We have gathered extensive video evidence, collected testimonies, and our intelligence teams are working vigorously with support from the full force to identify further criminal behaviour and locate those responsible. Justice will be forthwith.”

Four Just Stop Oil protesters detained near Manchester Airport

0

Four people from the Just Stop Oil group were arrested near Manchester Airport yesterday.

Police detained three women aged 21, 30, 53 and a man aged 23 on suspicion of conspiring to cause a public nuisance.

Those arrested were also found to be in possession of items that officers believed would have been used to cause damage and significant disruption to the Airport and their operations.

The four individuals remain in police custody for questioning and enquiries are ongoing.

Head of specialist operations, chief superintendent Mark Dexter said: “We have been working hard with colleagues from Manchester Airport and police forces across the country, sharing intelligence, with the common goal to prevent these disruptive and targeted attacks on our airports.

“We have a duty of care to all members of the public. The right to protest must be respected, but we have a duty to balance that right against the rights of the public to go about their lives without being subject to unacceptable disruption and will undertake swift and decisive action to arrest those intent on causing disturbances.

“These arrests have no doubt prevented a determined and targeted attack which would have brought significant delays and upset to those hard-working people heading off for their summer holidays.

“Anyone who sees anything suspicious or who has concerns about safety or security should speak to an officer or a member of the airport staff.”

Hundreds of free activities in Manchester for national Play Day

Libraries, leisure centres, parks, play schemes and galleries across the city are gearing up for Play Day action with a whole host of different activities for young people.

Each year Play Day sets out to celebrate the importance of play in children’s lives and to highlight the vital benefits of play for children’s happiness, health and creativity.

Play Day free fun on Wednesday will include Lego in libraries, beatboxing in Burnage, swimming, soft play and skateboarding, to BMX and balance bikes, books and board games, crafting and cricket, marble runs and racquet sports.

Manchester has a long, proud history of delivering innovative play services for the city’s children and young people, with the city’s first recorded play scheme being established as far back as 1913 when, according to archive reports, one activity involved sand being delivered to main streets to provide children with the opportunity for enjoyment and the experience of beach play.

Since those early beginnings Manchester’s play offer has expanded quite considerably and continues to do so as the city works with UNICEF on its journey towards becoming a Child Friendly City. The council funds local play providers to deliver year-round play opportunities and in 2023, more than 34,000 children benefited from school holiday provision.

And following feedback last year from over 11,000 children and young people, the council has also committed to further increasing free play and recreational opportunities so young people can meet their friends and enjoy themselves in their local area.

Councillor Julie Reid said: “Anyone who’s been around children will know how much joy children get out of often the simplest of things when they’re let loose to explore the world around them. You don’t have to be an expert to see that playing is fundamental to children’s development.  It helps them learn about the world around them, build resilience, make friends, cope with anxiety, and be creative.

“And it’s for all these reasons that we’re determined to do everything we can to provide as many opportunities as possible across the city for children to play and enjoy themselves, not just on national Play Day, but throughout the year – because in Manchester, we want every day to be play day for our children and young people.”

The industry is expected to grow massively, reaching a value of USD 19.7 billion by 2030. Companies like Tencent, Steam, and Promethean AI are at the forefront of this change. They show how important it is to use AI responsibly.

There’s a big concern about how these technologies could affect privacy and lead to addiction. Games are becoming more realistic and complex. This is a problem, especially for young people. We need to think about how to keep gaming fun and fair. At the same time, we must innovate without forgetting our responsibilities. This means having serious talks about the rules needed for AI in games.

Gaming with AI is becoming a worldwide trend. This puts pressure on the industry to handle data carefully and openly. Apple and other big names have supported voluntary AI safety guidelines. Olympics 2024: Hodgkinson wins 800m gold for Great Britain

Keely Hodgkinson produced a dominant performance in the Olympic 800m final to win her first ever gold medal.

The British 22-year-old lived up to her billing as favourite to end her wait for a global title at the Stade de France on Monday night.

Hodgkinson went one better at the Olympics after her silver as a teenager in Tokyo three years ago.

But the gold medal never looked in doubt this time around as she held off Kenyan rival Mary Moraa to convincingly claim gold.

Crossing the line in one minute 56.72 seconds, Hodgkinson’s joy was clear to see as she matched the feat achieved by Dame Kelly Holmes in 2004.

The Wigan-born runner said: “I think that [the podium] is when it will sink in and you will see some real emotion from me.

“I have worked really hard for the last year and I think you can see how much it meant to me when I crossed the line. I can’t believe I have finally done it!

“To do it here, where better? The audience was incredible. It felt like a home crowd to me in itself in Paris, so yes I am super, super happy.”

Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma won silver behind Hodgkinson, with world champion Moraa taking bronze.

Hodgkinson is the first to win athletics gold for GB since Sir Mo Farah won the 5,000m and 10,000m at Rio 2016, while she is only the 10th British woman to win gold.

Turbocharge the Potential of Your Manchester Based Business From Concept to Clicks

0

It’s a digital age, and in 2024, implementing innovative ways for businesses to reach their target audience and drive conversions is crucial. One of the most dynamic and results-driven strategies businesses can implement is Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. This strategy allows companies to gain maximum exposure and only pay for the actual clicks on their ads.

Google Ads is the chosen platform for many businesses wanting to leverage PPC advertising thanks to the platform’s unparalleled reach and precision targeting.

This article will explore how you can use Google Ads and PPC advertising to turbocharge your business, maximise your ROI, and turn clicks into conversions.

A Crash Course In Google Ads

Google Ads, formerly known as Google AdWords, is a platform that allows businesses to display their advertisements on the Google SERP (search engine results page) and Google partner websites and apps.

Google Ads predominately uses a pay-per-click model where businesses bid on specific keywords relevant to their niche. Their ads are then displayed to users searching for those unique keywords.

How Does PPC Advertising Enhance Businesses ROI?

PPC advertising is designed to target users when they are at a critical point in their purchase journey. It offers a cost-effective strategy that can really boost a business’s ROI.

PPC advertising is an excellent option for businesses seeking a marketing strategy that provides tangible results, such as clicks and conversions.

If you’ve been considering starting a new Pay-Per-Click strategy for your business, these are some of the ways PPC advertising can benefit your business:

  • Cost-effective: You only pay when a user clicks on your ad, so you can be sure your marketing budget is spent wisely. PPC advertising benefits businesses of all sizes and allows them to tailor spending based on what’s working and convert clicks to customers.
  • Target the Right People: PPC can help you target the right audience for your business. By displaying your ads to users who have previously expressed interest in similar products or services, you can minimise unnecessary ad spend and direct your budget to users who are more likely to convert.
  • Measurable Results: PPC provides immediate, measurable results. Clicks, impressions, and conversion rates are all trackable metrics that allow businesses to tweak campaigns based on real, tangible data.
  • Competitive Edge: PPC campaigns can be launched quickly, giving a business an instant boost in visibility and traffic. PPC is great for all businesses, particularly new businesses or any business looking to gain an edge over their competition.
  • Brand Visibility: Even if PPC advertising doesn’t lead to immediate clicks from users, it helps to increase brand awareness and visibility. Having your business appear at the top of the SERP allows you to build brand awareness and improve your business’s visibility.

How To Create An Effective Google Ads Strategy

There are several ways UK businesses can create an effective Google Ads strategy, including enlisting the help of an expert PPC Agency in London. These are some ways to supercharge your PPC strategy to ensure you have the most impact.

  • In-Depth Keyword Research: Comprehensive keyword research is key to identifying the most relevant and high-performing keywords for your business. Businesses should use a number of tools, including SEMrush or Keyword Planner.
  • Write Compelling Copy: Aim to create high-quality, compelling ad copy that captures the attention of your target audience. Highlight any unique selling points, include relevant offers or benefits, and ensure a strong call to action so that users are enticed to click on the ads.
  • Bid Strategically: Experiment with different bidding options, such as manual or automated bidding, and target CPA (cost per acquisition) or ROAS (return on ad spend) to find the most effective approach that achieves the best ROI.

How To Best Utilise Precise Targeting

Ensure that you are targeting in a precise and concentrated way. There are a few different targeting methods you can choose from, including:

  • Geographical Targeting: Use Google Ads’ geographical targeting options to focus your ads on specific regions or locations where your target audience is located. This helps ensure that your business’s ads reach the right people at the right time, which may equal more conversions.
  • Audience Targeting: Use Google Ads’ audience targeting features to refine your ad targeting based on specific factors like demographics, interests, or previous interactions with your business or website. This enables you to deliver more personalised ads to your audience, helping to boost engagement and conversions.

How To Use Google Ad Extensions To Your Advantage

Google Ads has several additional features that can help improve your business’s visibility. One of the best features is the Ad extension feature. Use extensions like site links, callouts, reviews, or location extensions to take your ads to the next level and encourage users to click through.

PPC advertising is an effective strategy that allows businesses to broaden their visibility and ensures that every dollar spent on your marketing budget is put towards achieving a higher ROI.

By implementing an effective PPC strategy, targeting the right audience and monitoring performance, businesses can maximise their ROI and stay ahead of the competition.

PPC advertising is fast-paced and constantly changing due to new innovations in the space. It’s important to stay informed about PPC best practices to ensure your campaigns are effective and able to maintain great results.

Begin the journey with PPC advertising today and propel your business to new heights with the help of this cost-effective marketing strategy.
