The Greening of Accounting: Educating Accountants for a Sustainable Future

0

In an era increasingly defined by environmental awareness, businesses and industries worldwide are adapting to meet the demands of sustainability. Accounting, a profession often viewed as dry and focused solely on numbers, is at the forefront of this green revolution. Today’s accountants need to understand and integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors into their practices. As the sector continues to evolve, so too must the education that prepares future accountants for these new responsibilities.

Understanding the Role of Green Accounting

Green accounting, also known as environmental accounting, involves integrating environmental costs and benefits into financial statements. It’s an approach that requires accountants to consider the environmental impact of a company’s operations and express them in monetary terms. With the rise of ESG factors playing a pivotal role in financial decisions, this practice encompasses assessing and reporting on everything from the cost of pollution and waste management to the benefits derived from sustainable practices and renewable energy.

In the UK, landmark legislation like the Climate Change Act 2008 lays out the government’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 100% of 1990 levels by 2050. This challenging objective necessitates a radical transformation across all sectors, including finance and accounting. Consequently, the onus now lies on accountants to provide transparent, accurate, and comprehensive reports on the environmental impacts of companies ESG performances.

Implications for Accounting Education

The evolution towards green accounting necessitates an equivalent transformation in accounting education. Educational programmes must equip aspiring accountants with the necessary skills to understand and implement sustainable accounting practices effectively, guiding businesses towards their environmental goals and meeting their ESG targets. To realise this vision, changes in accounting education could include the following aspects:

Broadening the Curriculum: Traditional accounting courses, pivotal for attaining accountancy qualifications, tend to focus heavily on financial accounting, tax, and auditing. While these are crucial areas, the curriculum needs to expand on courses dedicated to the ESG and include modules on environmental management, sustainability reporting, corporate social responsibility, ESG integration. This will equip students with the tools to measure and report on environmental costs, guiding businesses to make more sustainable decisions.

Enhancing Understanding of Environmental Policies: Future accountants need to be familiar with the UK’s environmental legislation, including the Climate Change Act and other relevant regulations. This would require incorporating legal studies into accounting education to ensure that graduates can navigate the complex legal landscape around sustainability and ESG governance.

Promoting Ethical Awareness: Accounting professionals have a duty to uphold ethical standards. This duty extends to the environment, where accountants can play a vital role in promoting ethical environmental practices. As such, ethics should be a central part of the accounting curriculum, with a focus on the ethical dimensions of environmental stewardship and ESG principles.

Encouraging Critical Thinking: Green accounting and ESG integration are rapidly evolving fields, and tomorrow’s accountants need to be agile and adaptable. Accounting education should foster critical thinking, encouraging students to question existing practices and find innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

The Future of Green Accounting

The shift towards green accounting is more than just a trend; it’s an essential part of the global response to climate change. As businesses increasingly recognise their environmental responsibilities and the importance of ESG metrics, the demand for accountants with expertise in sustainability is set to rise.

For instance, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) encourages companies to voluntarily disclose their environmental risks, pushing the need for green accounting skills further into the mainstream.

As we move towards a greener future, accounting educators must respond by producing graduates who can navigate this new landscape. Accounting is no longer just about balancing the books; it’s about balancing the needs of business with the demands of the environment and integrating ESG considerations into financial analyses.

The greening of accounting represents an opportunity for the profession to take a leading role in tackling one of the most critical issues of our time. By equipping the next generation of accountants with the skills to manage and report on environmental issues and ESG factors, we can ensure that the accounting profession contributes positively to a sustainable future.

As Albert Einstein once said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” In the fight against climate change, the accounting profession has the chance to prove him right.

Brighton Gears Up for European Campaign in Exciting New Season

Brighton and Hove Albion are poised to embark on another thrilling season as they prepare for their first European adventure following a remarkable sixth-place finish in the Premier League, securing them a spot in the Europa League for the 2023-24 campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi, who took charge of the club in September 2022 following Graham Potter’s departure, has made an indelible impact on the south coast club. In his debut match at the helm, his team displayed immense promise by securing a memorable 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Leandro Trossard, the goal-scorer in that captivating encounter, showcased his talent with a hat-trick, prompting Arsenal to acquire his services for a significant fee of £20 million (plus £7 million in add-ons) in January. Brighton, however, continued to thrive under De Zerbi’s leadership, delivering strong results while playing an attractive brand of football.

With their inaugural participation in European competition on the horizon, Albion aims to prove their mettle in the Europa League. Bolstered by the strength of their squad, they are confident in their ability to make a deep run in the tournament.

While relishing their historic European journey, their ambitions extend beyond that. Brighton strives to establish themselves as a consistent top-six contender, building upon their impressive finish from the previous season. Additionally, De Zerbi’s side performed admirably in domestic competitions, reaching the FA Cup semi-finals and the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup during the 2022-23 campaign.

Prior to the commencement of pre-season preparations, Brighton has already secured several signings. Midfielders James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud have joined as free agents, while the club has broken its transfer record to acquire forward João Pedro from Watford. Retaining promising players like Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, and Moisés Caicedo will provide a strong foundation for the team moving forward.

Teenager Evan Ferguson garnered significant attention from Premier League fans last season with his impressive tally of 10 goals for the Seasiders. At just 18 years old, he possesses immense potential and room for growth.

Brighton’s ambitious project continues to attract talented players, but competing in Europe may present a significant challenge for the current squad. The demanding Europa League schedule, involving matches on Thursdays and domestic fixtures on weekends, may stretch their squad depth and lead to additional injuries and fatigue. It will be a true test of De Zerbi’s managerial acumen and the capabilities of his backroom staff to navigate these challenges successfully.

The new Premier League season kicks off for Brighton with a home fixture against newly promoted Luton Town at the AMEX Stadium, where the Seagulls will be heavily favored to secure victory. They then travel to Molineux to face Wolves in their first away game, followed by back-to-back home matches against West Ham and Newcastle United.

In their fifth game of the season, they face Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at Old Trafford. Brighton emerged triumphant in both league encounters against United last season, including a memorable victory at Old Trafford on the opening day. However, their FA Cup journey was halted by the Red Devils in the semi-finals, with United advancing on penalties.

Their first clash with Ten Hag’s men in the upcoming season promises to be a compelling encounter, full of intrigue and excitement.

Business services and tech shine in strong H1

0

Grant Thornton UK LLP’s Northern Corporate Finance team has reported a successful H1 in 2023, with continued progress in the mid-market.

Over the first six months of 2023, the Northern team, spanning the North West, Yorkshire and the North East, has successfully advised on over 10 deals, equating to c£100m in value.

Most recently, the team, led by partner Peter Terry, Northern head of Corporate Finance, advised on private equity firm Mercia’s exit from Manchester-based global parking reservation platform ParkVia to CAVU, a subsidiary of Manchester Airports Group.

This was the third tech-based deal within the North West region that Grant Thornton has advised on in the first half, following the sale of two Liverpool businesses Ardent Credit Services and Horsefly.

Meanwhile in Yorkshire, the corporate finance team has recently advised on the cross-border transaction of Schoeller-Bleckmann‘s acquisition of well completion specialist Praxis Completion Technology in Dubai.

This builds off the success of last year when Grant Thornton’s northern advisory team completed 48 deals.

Peter Terry said: “Despite the more challenging market conditions, with inflation still high and interest rates rising, there is a resilient market for high quality assets run by ambitious management teams.

“SaaS businesses operating in favourable verticals continue to prove attractive to investors, both domestic and overseas, due to the annuity-like nature of their revenues, their scalability and resilience.”

Jim Whittaker, Director in Yorkshire, added: “The continuing uncertainty in the wider macro environment means ongoing caution and sector selectivity amongst investors.  We are seeing deeper market and financial diligence demands as well as, in some cases, more downside protection for buyers being built into deal structuring through earn-outs.  However, many corporates with robust balance sheets and access to capital continue to see genuine strategic opportunities, particularly overseas buyers who still regard the UK as good value at a time when there might be less competition for assets.”

Over the last six months, the Northern team has welcomed six new members to the team at Assistant Manager and Manager level, joining their Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool offices. This includes Ammen Arya, Sarah Mackey, James Wheeler, Maria Barnes and Jordan Fenney.

Banned by DVLA: All ’73’ Number Plates, Including BE73 END and FA73 DCK

0

The DVLA has released the complete list of banned number plates, which includes BE73 END and FA73 DCK.

Every year, two sets of number plates are issued, with the ’23’ number plates introduced in March and the ’73’ plates set to be released in September.

Given the vast number of plates being issued, it’s not surprising that some combinations of letters and numbers can form offensive words or nearly offensive words.

To ensure road safety, the DVLA preemptively bans a group of number plates that could be considered offensive.

Jon Kirkbright, sales director at Platehunter, a specialist in private number plates, filed a Freedom of Information request to the DVLA to obtain the exclusive list of banned plates.

The list includes understandably offensive combinations such as BO73 LOX, HA73 GAY, LE73 ZZA, SH73 TER, and WH73 PWR.

Jon commented on the banned plates, stating, “With such a large number of plates being released at once, it’s no surprise that some of them are unsuitable for the road. However, some of the plates are on the borderline, but I understand why the DVLA chose to be extra cautious. They are simply trying to protect a significant source of revenue.”

According to Jon, the biannual release of new number plates brings forth thousands of sought-after combinations. He predicts that EL73NOR, AN73 ONY, and FA73 EMA will be popular choices among the new releases. Currently, these plates are being sold for prices ranging from £4,995 to £7,995.

Platehunter, a reputable number plate supplier, has been in business for 11 years and offers over 56 million personalised number plates for sale. The company prides itself on affordability, with plates starting at just £39 plus VAT and transfer fees.

Jon further stated, “Names are always in high demand. People want to have their names on their cars, and the market for personalised plates is continually growing in popularity.

“We’ve noticed an increasing number of individuals purchasing personalised plates for themselves, their children, or even their business vehicles. Names or initials are the most common requests from customers. Each new release is exciting because it allows drivers to acquire plates that were previously unavailable.”

While pre-orders are not available, Platehunter aims to fulfill 95% of the plates that customers inquire about.

Individuals in search of a registration plate are encouraged to explore the Platehunter website. Jon added, “If customers can’t find what they’re looking for, they can provide us with their specifications, and we will notify them if the desired plate becomes available.

“We can also arrange to auction any DVLA number plate, as long as it meets legal requirements and has not been issued previously.”

For more information or assistance with purchasing or selling a private number plate, please visit PlateHunter’s website. Additionally, you can follow and contact them on InstagramTwitter or Facebook..

American Strickland, 32, is looking to make it back-to-back wins, having beaten Nassourdine Imavov on points in January, following two straight losses last year.

Meanwhile, German-Russian Magomedov, also 32, enters Las Vegas on the back of a three-fight win streak, with all of those wins having come via stoppage.

Benoit Saint-Denis fights Ismael Bonfim in a lightweight bout. Bonfim has gone from a -275 favorite to -300 while getting 25% of the tickets and 29% of the handle at BetMGM.

More questions in the middleweight division of the UFC will be answered on Saturday, as brash, outspoken veteran Sean Strickland welcomes dangerous striker Abus Magomedov in a main event at the UFC Apex on Saturday.

Ariane Lipski fights Melissa Gatto in the lone women’s fight on the main card. Gatto opened at -165 and has jumped up to -250. Gatto is getting 50% of the bets and 75% of the money at BetMGM.

Max Griffin fights the undefeated Michael Morales in a battle of welterweights. Morales’ odds have shifted from -210 to -250 at BetMGM. The 14-0 man is getting 31% of the tickets and 41% of the money.

This will be Strickland’s first Middleweight fight since losing by split decision to Jared Cannonier on Fight Night back in December of last year. Heading into his third-straight main event, Strickland defeated Nassourdine Imavov in a Light Heavyweight contest in January via decision, and has a career record of 26-5, with 10 wins coming by knockout.

Strickland (26-5) has emerged as one of the most unhinged personalities in the UFC between his in-cage trash talk and questionable quotes circulating online. A middleweight contender ready to fight at anytime, Strickland (No. 7) accommodated the UFC’s request to fight an opponent not recognized by the UFC’s official middleweight rankings. Strickland is many things, but he is not dismissive of the challenge his unheralded opponent presents.

The co-main event is Damir Ismagulov vs. Grant Dawson. Also on the card is the return of Kevin Lee, who fights Rinat Fakhretdinov, and a promising action fight between Ismail Bonfim and Benoit Saint-Denis.

Smith vs Maxwell Fight TV Channel Online Broadcast

Dalton Smith and Sam Maxwell square off in the main event live stream from Utilita Arena Sheffield in Sheffield, England on Saturday, July 1. The contest pits local British super lightweight champion against London-born, Liverpool-based Commonwealth titleholder. The bout is scheduled for 12 rounds.

Smith must defeat Liverpudlian Maxwell, a former amateur standout who famously squared off against the legendary Vasiliy Lomachenko in the World Series of Boxing, in order to win the Lonsdale Belt outright.

He responded with a points victory over Shaun Cooper in February, joining Smith on the Leigh Wood vs. Mauricio Lara 1 undercard in Nottingham to set up this showdown.

“This is a big fight for me,” said Smith, who will claim the Lonsdale Belt if he is victorious. “I want that British title for keeps. It’s going to be a special performance on Saturday.

Dalton Smith faces Sam Maxwell for the British and Commonwealth super lightweight titles at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena on Saturday.

Hometown favourite Smith puts his 14-0 (10 KOs) record on the line to defend his British belt for the third time, having most recently seen off the challenge of Billy Allington in February.

Dalton Smith can secure the Lonsdale belt at 140lbs outright if he can get past Sam Maxwell tonight.

Smith is seen as one of the brightest prospects in British boxing and he can enhance those claims with a win over the Liverpool man.

Maxwell’s opponent Smith, who also came in under the 140lb limit at the weigh-in, will land the British outright with a win over Maxwell after his second defence came in February, when he successfully outpointed Billy Allington.

The Sheffield native, who has an undefeated record and is the main event in his hometown for the second time in his career, faces former world title challenger Maxwell, who is perhaps his biggest test to date.

In addition to bringing Smith’s record to 15-0, a victory over Maxwell will also see him claim the British super lightweight championship by unanimous decision since it will be the third time the Lonsdale belt has been defended.

Crews-Dezurn vs Marshall Live TV Channel Online Broadcast Boxing Fight

Savannah Marshall and Franchon Crews-Dezurn go head to head in Manchester tonight, with the latter’s undisputed super-middleweight titles on the line.

Franchon Crews-Dezurn will defend the undisputed super middleweight championship today against Savannah Marshall, in the main event bout of a Boxxer show from AO Arena in Manchester, England.

The fights air starting from at 2 pm ET on ESPN+ in the United States and Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.

Marshall will meet her American opponent at the AO Arena in Manchester and has vowed to improve on her defeat to Shields.

Like Marshall, the only defeat of Crews-Dezurn’s career came against Shields.

Savannah Marshall lost her unbeaten record to pound-for-pound superstar Claressa Shields last October but returns to action with another undisputed title up for grabs.

Marshall (12-1, 10 KOs) moves north to super middleweight to take on Franchon Crews-Dezurn for all four major titles at 168 lbs.

Marshall was unsuccessful in her attempt to become an undisputed champion at middleweight, outboxed by a furiously frantic Claressa Shields last year. Undeterred, she now challenges Crews-Dezurn for the four belts at super-middleweight.

The ‘Silent Assassin’ had earned a perfect 12-0 record, including 10 KOs, before coming up against long-time rival and undisputed middleweight champion Claressa Shields in October. The Hartlepool boxer lost a unanimous decision but has been given the opportunity to fight for undisputed status at super middleweight against Franchon Crews-Dezurn.

Crews-Dezurn defeated Elin Cederroos last September by unanimous decision, capturing the WBA and IBF super middleweight titles with the win. She has held the WBC title since 2018 and the WBO title since 2019. Her career accolades are outstanding, considering the 36-year-old had an unorthodox journey to stardom.

Having suffered a first professional loss last time out against Claressa Shields, Marshall hasn’t wasted any time with a warm-up bout and on Saturday night will step up a division to challenge Crews-Dezurn – a fierce fighter who is putting all four of her super-middleweight titles on the line at the AO Arena in Manchester.
