This Feeling By The Sea announce competition winners to perform on same bill as indie heavyweights Red Rum Club & The Lathums

LISTEN TO BOTH ARTISTS:

ABOUT-FACES – ‘UNDER THE SUN’

RUBY J – ‘TRY’

“This Feeling is the best club night for future rock ‘n’ roll stars.” – Noel  Gallagher

“This Feeling were the first to take a real punt on us.” – Blossoms

“If you’re going to see the emergence of a new great band, you’re going to see them at This Feeling first.” – Carl Barât

“Flying the flag for British guitar music.” – Sergio Pizzorno

This Feeling By The Sea is shaping up to be one of the most exciting new festivals of the summer when it debuts at Bridlington Spa’s stunning 3800 capacity Art Deco Royal Hall on August 18th-19th

The rock ‘n’ roll tastemakers have put together an enviable line-up led by bands at the peak of their game: The Lathums, who recently  followed their second #1 album with a standout Glastonbury performance; another recent UK album chart-topping band in the shape of Lottery Winners, who just completed a triumphant set at Kendal Calling; plus Red Rum Club and The K’s, who recently graduated to the main stage at Y Not?. And with a line-up paced with essential new bands, the question is – which of them will follow The Lathums and Lottery Winners to the top of the charts?

Now the line-up is boosted as This Feeling announce the winners of their competition to give two new artists the opportunity to open the festival. Judged by the This Feeling team together with new music champions and festival DJs Jericho Keys (BBC Introducing) and John Kennedy (Radio X), the winners are:

about-faces: Leeds quintet about-faces have already ignited a buzz in their home city, having sold-out a headline show in Oporto in just four days. Remarkably they only released their debut single ‘Under The Sun’ a month ago, a song which finds them contorting emotional indie-rock, alt-rock and anthemic echoes of U2 in their own utterly engaging fashion. Frontman Sennen Ludman already possesses a magnetic rock star charisma, while his lead vocals are supported by beautiful harmonies from keyboardist Danielle Capstick. The band is completed by Cormac Connolly (lead guitar), Nigel Ngwenya (bass) and Joseph Schofield (drums).

Jericho Keys says, ‘Under The Sun’ sounds like a tune that was specifically written to open a summer festival on the coast. It’s full of poignant lyrics and evocative melodies that will have any punter that’s ever been heartbroken dancing through the tears to optimism.”

Ruby J: Just 18-years-old, Midlander Ruby J possesses a remarkable voice that has inspired comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Macy Gray, as heard on her early standout tracks ‘Try’, ‘The Game’ and ‘Should Be Me’. While soul, blues and jazz are her core reference points, she plays those genres with a rock band’s intensity – a hybrid which reflects her varied influences, which range from Billie Holiday and Tash Sultana to Arctic Monkeys and Paolo NutiniRuby J has already played shows with The Lathums and Jamie Webster as well as festivals such as the Isle of Wight, Black Deer and Y Not?.

John Kennedy states, “Ruby J is an outstanding talent who will be a brilliant addition to an already incredible line up.”

By The Sea represents a landmark moment and a celebration of everything that This Feeling founder and figurehead Mikey Jonns has achieved with the rising rock ‘n’ roll platform. Every artist on the bill has in some way benefited from This Feeling’s support – from being booked for early shows or big festivals, being highlighted on the annual ‘Big In…’ vinyl collection,  or being signed to This Feeling Records.

He adds, All the acts have played This Feeling gigs in grassroots venues as well as most of our stages at major festivals including the Isle of Wight, Truck, Y Not? and The Great Escape. Two bands on the line-up have had #1 albums and there’ll be many more, no doubt. It’s a dream come true to bring a line-up of bands we love and have supported from the off to Bridlington Spa for our very own festival By The Sea!”

Limited tickets for This Feeling By The Sea remain available HERE. They are priced at £50 for the weekend, £25 for Friday tickets, or £30 for Saturday tickets.

NOT-SO-PREMIUM BONDS? SAVINGS EXPERTS HAIL TRADITIONAL SAVINGS ACCOUNTS OVER ‘LOTTO-STYLE’ PREMIUM BONDS, DESPITE INCREASED CHANCES OF WINNIN

0

Savings experts have hailed traditional savings accounts over Premium Bonds, despite the latest boost to winning odds.

Following consecutive interest rate hikes, savings account operators have been under pressure to offer better interest rates, resulting in the leading rate on easy access savings accounts rising to 4.75% currently.*

This has forced the body responsible for Premium Bonds, National Savings and Investments (NS&I), to improve their offering to remain competitive, with the odds now standing at 21,000 to one – the highest level for more than 15 years.

This means that there will be 90 prizes of £100,000 in the monthly draws of all investors who have purchased bonds, compared with 77 at present and up from just six in May last year.

However, savings experts at money.co.uk/savings-accounts reveal that traditional savings methods, like easy-access savings accounts and ISAs, still remain a good option for reliable and consistent savings.

Lucinda O’Brien, expert at money.co.uk savings accounts, said: “Despite Premium Bonds offering the chance to win tax-free money, swapping regular interest for a chance to win money in monthly prize draws means you are likely to be missing out on savings.

“The odds aren’t in your favour when you compare 21,000 to one, to earning interest on your savings 100% of the time in a typical savings account, as only the minority win on Premium Bonds and even then it may only be a small prize amount.

“You also have to wait a full month before you’re eligible to win, whereas you start earning interest straight away in a normal savings account.

“Many people are attracted by the fun and exciting ‘lottery effect’ of Premium Bonds but when you consider these points, they are not so great in terms of returns.

“Despite the increased number of prizes, there are still only two winners each month of the £1m jackpots – out of the 22 million investors who hold Premium Bonds.

“If you want to generate a more reliable income from your money, you might want to consider a traditional savings account, cash ISA or investments, including stocks and share ISAs.

“Otherwise you might be waiting for a cash injection that never comes and miss out on years of savings earned gradually in interest.”

Looking to the Future: The Leadership Styles Gen Z Brings to the Workplace

0
  • Jessica Moores at RADA Business shares insight into Gen Z leadership styles

As Gen Z continues to enter the workforce and assume positions of influence, organisations worldwide are experiencing a shift in common working styles. By 2025, Gen is projected to make up 27% of the workforce[1]. The generation born between the late 1990s and early 2010s is bringing fresh perspectives to the workplace. Is this reshaping the future of work?

Purpose-Driven Leadership

Gen Z leaders often possess a strong sense of purpose. Many seek out meaningful work which aligns with their values and can make a positive impact on the world; 32% want to know how their employer invests in responsible and sustainable business, compared to 14% of Gen X and 21% of Millennials[2]. This purpose-driven leadership can inspire and motivate the team around them, fostering a sense of collective purpose and shared goals.

Digital Natives and Tech Fluency

Having grown up in the digital age, members of Gen Z possess an innate familiarity with technology – 83% of this age group report that they actively stay up-to-date with the latest technology and trends[3]. With their tech fluency, they are able to adapt quickly to emerging tools and platforms, enabling efficient collaboration and helping to bring innovation into organisations. They are able to harness the power of digital solutions to solve complex problems, helping organisations to stay ahead of the curve.

Authenticity and Inclusivity

Many members of Gen Z seek to create a workplace which emphasises collaboration and inclusivity, recognising that diverse perspectives lead to better outcomes.

Research shows that 31% of Gen Z will choose to work for employers who proactively prioritise diversity and inclusion in their workforce, compared to 11% of Gen X and 13% of Millennials[4]. These leaders often encourage open dialogue, actively seek input from team members, and leverage the strengths of each individual to foster an environment where everyone feels valued and heard, enabling effective collaboration.

Gen Z often prioritises authenticity and transparency in their interactions with team members[5]. They value open and honest communication, which fosters trust and creates a supportive work culture. They lead by example, displaying genuine emotions and vulnerability, which often leads to similar behaviours within their teams. This authenticity can build strong relationships, enhances teamwork, and boosts overall employee engagement.

Continuous Learning and Development

Members of Gen Z regularly seek out learning opportunities, both formal and informal, to expand their skill sets and stay ahead of industry trends; 76% see upskilling as key to their career advancement[6]. This thirst for knowledge and continuous personal growth can transfer to team members, and a culture of learning is actively encouraged. This common investment in their growth and that of their team members suggests we can look forward to a high-performing and innovative workforce for years to come.

The ever-changing nature of the modern workplace demands adaptability and agility. Gen Z workers commonly embrace change as an opportunity for growth and innovation.

Organisations can benefit by offering Gen Z a seat at the table, to understand new viewpoints and harness fresh skills, especially in a time characterised by volatility, complexity and rapid change. These skills can be built upon within RADABusiness’ leadership courses, designed to help individuals to reconnect with their teams, showcasing the importance of having a diverse set of skills, values and approaches in order to communicate better across generations and ensure a well-rounded workplace.

Jessica Moores, Head of Open Courses at RADA Business says: “over the past six months, we’ve seen some common themes in the areas of support that Gen Z have been raising, including how to increase their confidence and boost their impact, as well as specific scenarios such as handling challenging conversations. It’s clear that Gen Z are already focussing on their professional development and taking steps to enhance their skills.”

Leading Bespoke Residential Dog Trainers, Platinum K9, Share Expert Tips to Manage Excessive Dog Barking

0

Renowned dog training experts at Platinum K9 have unveiled a comprehensive guide comprising six essential tips to help dog owners effectively manage their pets’ excessive barking tendencies.

Platinum K9, a prominent provider of bespoke residential dog training solutions, has shared their expert insights to assist dog owners in addressing excessive barking before it becomes deeply ingrained in their furry friends’ behaviour.

A spokesperson from Platinum K9 explained, “Barking is an intrinsic aspect of canine communication. However, if a dog engages in persistent and excessive barking—be it territorial, reactive, or excited barking—it can quickly evolve into a challenging issue. Employing these methods can empower owners to take early action and prevent the escalation of this concern.”

  1. Desensitise the Dog: This method involves conditioning the dog to become less responsive to specific triggers that prompt barking. By recording or simulating the triggering sound (such as a door knock), owners can gradually acclimate their dogs to this sound. The approach involves playing the sound to trigger the dog’s response, then calmly waiting without acknowledging them. Once the barking ceases for a brief duration, praising and rewarding the dog reinforces the notion that silence garners positive attention.
  2. Praise for Positive Behaviour: Owners are advised to call their dogs over and praise them when they return, instead of rewarding them for barking. By doing so, dogs learn that being quiet and responsive is rewarded, whereas barking goes unrewarded.
  3. Create a Safe Space: For dogs barking due to fear or anxiety, establishing a designated safe space within the home can provide comfort. This area, equipped with a cozy bed, water, and toys, offers solace during stressful situations. In cases of separation anxiety, a safe space can alleviate distress when the owner is absent. Leaving on the radio or TV can further reduce the dog’s anxiety.
  4. Increase Physical and Mental Stimulation: Excessive barking arising from boredom or pent-up energy can be mitigated through increased physical exercise and mental stimulation. Regular walks, engaging activities, and interactive toys can channel the dog’s energy positively and prevent barking.
  5. Avoid Shouting at the Dog: Yelling or aggressive gestures can intensify barking and confusion in dogs. Maintaining a calm demeanor and using firm instructions is a more effective way to manage excessive barking.
  6. Improve Communication: Understanding a dog’s communication cues and employing additional training can help owners interpret barking correctly. Teaching a dog to use a bell or symbol to convey their needs can foster better communication.

The spokesperson emphasised the importance of consistency and patience when employing these methods. They also recommended seeking professional assistance if the tips don’t yield results, as there might be underlying medical reasons for the dog’s barking.

UK construction products testing system won’t be ready by 2025

Manufacturers are urging the Government to include building products in its decision to offer an indefinite extension of the European CE marking system for a panoply of manufactured goods.

They claim that delaying the deadline for the introduction of UK conformity assessed, UKCA, products by 18 months to 30th June 2025 is insufficient time.

Construction Products Association, CPA, chief executive Peter Caplehorn said: “The last thing that is needed is to constrain product testing and certification to within these shores.

“It would take many decades and considerable investment to undertake all the necessary testing and certification solely in the UK, even if manufacturers could be persuaded to take part.”

On Tuesday the business and trade department announced 18 product groups under its remit would benefit from the indefinite extension of the European CE marking system.

Business minister Kevin Hollinrake said: “By extending CE marking use across the UK, firms can focus their time and money on creating jobs and growing the economy.”

Mr Caplehorn said that lack of clarity of the announcement had caused “enormous amounts of confusion and discussion” in the media.

UK testing regime introduction likely to cause supply chain delays

The National Federation of Builders, NFB, said the introduction of UKCA mark coincided with implementation of the future homes’ standard to reduce carbon emissions of new homes by three quarters.

NFB housing and planning policy head Rico Wojtulewicz said: “Testing and capacity remain major challenges and therefore industry needs clarity and a clear direction of how the Government seeks to reform the UK’s construction product regime.”

Brokers Hank Zarihs Associates said development finance lenders were concerned that UKCA could lead to supply chain delays leading to a further slump in new homes being built.

Recent National House Building Council data showed new homes registration fell by 42 per cent in the second quarter of this year compared with the same period in 2022.

The department of levelling up, housing and communities, DLUHC, confirmed that the UK testing regime on construction products would go live on 30th June 2025.

“We are committed to ensuring the testing regime for construction products is effective and inspires public and market confidence,” said a DLUHC spokesperson.

She said proposals for construction products testing reform would be released in due course. It’s expected to embrace recommendations from the independent review of construction product testing.

Levelling up and housing secretary Michael Gove’s statement on publication of the review in April 2023 pledged the new testing regime would be based on “high standards and complete transparency”.

Mr Gove commissioned the review following findings of the Grenfell Tower inquiry where it was highlighted that those responsible for testing failed to adhere to proper procedures in conducting the assessment process. It also noted that manufacturers’ performance claims for products were misleading and were not supported by the assessment process.

Ditched UKCA mark scheme is a red mark against the Government, says ParcelHer

0

The Government has been marked down by the international delivery expert ParcelHero for its abortive ‘UKCA’ safety mark scheme. ParcelHero says many companies have already spent thousands on new labelling.

The Government has admitted failure over its highly controversial plan to replace the EU’s gold standard CE safety mark with a UK-only label. The UKCA mark would have been needed for thousands of products sold in Britain, from toys and kettles to medical implants and hot water boilers, to show they met UK standards.

The international delivery expert ParcelHero has long argued that, eventually, the compulsory introduction of UKCA markings on a huge range of products would have cost millions of pounds. Many new British-made products sold in the EU would still have required separate CE labelling.

ParcelHero’s Head of Consumer Research, David Jinks M.I.L.T., says: ‘Since February 2019, ParcelHero has campaigned tirelessly against the dogmatic and blinkered plan to replace the EU’s ubiquitous CE safety mark with a UK-only UKCA logo. The “Conformité Européene” (CE) branding clearly irritated Brexiteers, but the plan to replace it with “UK Conformity Assessed” (UKCA) labelling could have cost UK manufacturers millions of pounds.

‘The ultimate point of the legislation (apart from removing any mention of the word “Européene”) was that Britain could take back control and start to introduce its own standards which, potentially, could have diverged from those applied to CE-branded products. In such cases, the results of conformity tests carried out by UK assessment bodies would no longer be recognised by the EU. Consequently, it would no longer be possible to sell UKCA-passed products within the EU without reassessment by EU bodies.

‘The very idea that British-made goods would have to meet two sets of regulations as well as two sets of markings was clearly a red mark against the UK’s Brexit plans. Whoever thought this was acceptable?

‘The Government’s UKCA guidance page now carries a rather sheepish note saying: “The government intends to extend recognition of the CE marking for placing most goods on the market in Great Britain, indefinitely, beyond December 2024.” In fact, 31 December 2024 is far from the first cancelled date. Back on 2 February 2019, when ParcelHero launched its campaign to have the UKCA safety stamp stamped out, the Government had just published “Prepare to use the UKCA mark after Brexit – using the UKCA marking if the UK leaves the EU without a deal“. It stated new British products introduced after 29 March 2019 would need to conform to the new standards. Though this page has long since been wiped, several other supposed deadlines for the adoption of the UKCA marking have come and gone.

‘Perhaps the ultimate barmy stroke in this much-postponed plan was that the UKCA marking alone would not have been permitted for goods placed on the Northern Ireland market, despite the fact Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. In fact, the Government’s website still says some products will need to display a separate “UKNI” marking, coupled with CE markings.

‘Many UK products, from electronics to patio doors, already show the new UKCA markings, as the scheme was phased in from 1 January 2021. Until this month’s belated climbdown, this labelling would have been compulsory for hundreds of new products from the end of next year.

‘British businesses are recovering from the worst of the impact of Brexit, but cannot afford any more Government decisions that make trading with our EU neighbours even harder. Like it or lump it, the EU is still Britain’s single largest trading partner. The impact of Covid and the war in Ukraine have left British manufacturers facing a hard enough time selling overseas. We cannot have any more Government interference that hobbles British businesses and ties one hand behind the backs of our manufacturers and retailers.

‘While the UK’s trade with the USA has not suffered a similar upheaval, there are still significant hurdles surrounding product compliance markings. In the US, there is no one common CE-style marking. Different types of products are regulated by different federal agencies. For example, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) oversees many retail goods. Additionally, some state laws and regulations are more stringent than US federal laws. ParcelHero’s USA page gives full details on Customs advice, sending food, prohibited items, etc.

‘The US is ParcelHero’s biggest individual overseas market. For expert advice on UK-US shipping, including Customs information, help for exports and prohibited items details, see: https://www.parcelhero.com/en-gb/international-courier-services/usa-parcel-delivery
