Daniel Ricciardo happy to be back racing ahead of United States Grand Prix

Yee-haw! Daniel Ricciardo fans hold your horses; he is back. The Aussie is set to make his return to the grid in Texas saying he is “happy to be back.”

Ricciardo sustained an injury to his hand at the Dutch Grand Prix in a practice session in August and has been unable to drive since. Doubts were cast on when exactly he would return, with Alpha Tauri reserve driver Liam Lawson keeping his seat warm in the meantime.

An occasion the honey badger has made one of his own, fans and drivers alike will be delighted at the news. Speaking in a team preview he said: “It’s good to be back. 

“My hand is much better, the simulator was a useful way of assessing it.”

It is common knowledge how much Ricciardo loves to race in Texas. After previously making a mark of arriving to the US GP on horseback. 

Meanwhile the grid will welcome back the return of his big smile and infectious personality with open arms, and maybe even arriving on another horse. 

He has since posted a message on this Instagram account also confirming his return.

He said: “Little update: simulator’s been going well.

“Hand is feeling good to drive. Austin – everyone knows I love Austin.

This will be only Ricciardo’s third race since his return to the grid at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July.

McCullum not concerned by England’s World Cup woes

Brendon McCullum insists England should “not get shaken by the odd bad day at the office” as they attempt to get their World Cup campaign back on track.

Test coach McCullum was an exasperated observer as Matthew Mott’s team were humbled by Afghanistan on Sunday – their second defeat in three games as they look to defend the title they won in thrilling fashion against New Zealand in 2019.

Next up for England are South Africa, who themselves suffered a shock defeat to the Netherlands yesterday.

McCullum, who is in Mumbai on business and staying in the same hotel as the one-day team, told The Mirror: “They just need to stay true to their method and their style which has brought them so much success and not get shaken by the odd bad day at the office.

“Of course the boys would have liked to be 3 and 0, but sport doesn’t work like that and sometimes you have to cope with challenges and then show how good you are. One thing is for sure, there are good reasons why England have won two World Cups recently.

“There is going to be the odd upset and that is what you want in a tournament like this.

“Look at what happened to South Africa. That was a strong win from the Dutch and there will be other unexpected results before the tournament is over.”

McCullum is confident England can turn their fortunes around, starting against the Proteas at the weekend.

He added: “It was good to see the boys out here and have a brief catch-up with Motty.

“They are doing a great job and have done so for a long time and I’m just looking forward to seeing them show their quality over the next few weeks.

“Playing cricket in India against the nine other top nations in a World Cup is never going to be a walk in the park, but this is what they boys play the game for. This is what gets them excited and I’m sure that we will see the best of them soon enough.”

Phillips ponders Manchester City future

Kalvin Phillips knows he has a “decision to make” after being told by England boss Gareth Southgate that he has to be playing games ahead of Euro 2024.

Phillips joined Manchester City from Leeds in July 2022 but has failed to hold down a regular first-team place at the Etihad. He made 21 appearances across all competitions as City won a domestic and continental treble last season, but started just two Premier League games.

He has fared little better this term, making just three substitute appearances in the league.

Phillips played for 69 minutes in last night’s 3-1 win over Italy that confirmed England’s place in the finals but is set for more bench duty when City take on Brighton this weekend, especially with defensive midfield rival Rodri back from suspension.

“I want to play football and want to play as much as possible,” Phillips added.

“Over the last year and a half I haven’t been able to do that due to injuries. It’s something I am going to have to think about.

Harry Maguire: Proper England fans don’t boo their players

Following the jeers from England supporters directed towards Jordan Henderson, team-mate Harry Maguire is the latest to stick up for the midfielder, claiming “proper England fans don’t boo players.”

Having been heckled as he came off in England’s friendly game against Australia on Friday, Henderson received a much better reception as he came on in the 70th minute against Italy last night.

Speaking to the media after his side secured a place in next year’s European Championships with a 3-1 win, Maguire said: “Proper England fans don’t boo players.

Northstone kickstarts delivery of energy efficient new homes in Horwich

HOMEBUILDER Northstone has officially kickstarted work to deliver a mix of new, energy efficient homes in Horwich, Bolton.

Enabling work has begun at the former Horwich Golf Club site to deliver phase one of the community, which will see 177 homes delivered at the site to be known as ‘Cynefin’.

The first phase will include a wide housing mix responding to local demand, including 1-bed apartments, 2-bed bungalows, 2-5 bed family homes and 2-4 bed townhouses. Of those, 34% will be affordable and made available at both affordable rent and discount market rent.

Earthworks have started to enable delivery of the key infrastructure, with construction of the roads and sewers set to start this month and the main access point off Victoria Road set to be created before Christmas. It’s expected the first homes will be available as early as Autumn 2024, with reservations being taken from Spring 2024.

‘New, new build’

Northstone have been delivering what they call the ‘new, new build’ – challenging outdated perceptions of poor quality new builds with hidden ‘extras’. Homes at Horwich will come with a long list of features as standard, from AI lighting and heating controls, all flooring and luxury kitchens, to integrated appliances, built-in wardrobes and sheds.

Chris Okey, head of pre construction at Northstone, said: “We’ve already made great progress on the earthworks and installation of retaining walls that form the development areas where the homes will be built. We’ll be on-site creating the access point come Christmas and people will see the energy-efficient homes take shape by next spring – with the first plots being those next to Bond Close.

“We’re absolutely committed to being a considerate neighbour to the surrounding communities, and have been updating locals on our planned activity as we got going.  We’re doing everything we can to make delivery of Cynefin one of our most sustainable projects yet.

“The end result will be a high-quality community with a wide housing choice for people at different stages of their life, whether first time buyers, those wanting to rent or downsizers looking for a bungalow.”

Northstone began its journey in Bolton, with its design-led communities Silkash and Airie. The company has since gone on to win awards for its sustainable approach to development – which includes diverting waste from landfill, increasing biodiversity and positively engaging the local community.

Owing to commitment to creating nature-friendly communities, it also became the first homebuilder in the UK to become a Gold Member of the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside.

The team has discovered that the existing bedrock on site is of the type and quality that it can be processed and used for construction materials – including creating drainage trenches and temporary areas of hardstanding.

It’s meant the team has been able to significantly reduce the reliance on quarried material and the amount of material being brought to and from site. As a result, planned traffic movements have been cut, helping further cut carbon emissions from construction.

Chris Okey added: “Over the years we’ve honed our approach to construction and developed best practice, to minimise waste sent to landfill and to form meaningful partnerships with local groups, so we leave a positive lasting legacy.

“Horwich is no different and we’re looking forward to making a positive impact as we bring forward much-needed homes for Bolton.”

England may have qualified for Euro 2024 but Jude Bellingham concedes it is now about “delivering” on the biggest stage.

The Real Madrid midfielder was again outstanding as the Three Lions made sure of their place in Germany next summer, playing a leading role in two goals in the 3-1 win over Italy at Wembley last night.

England have come close to claiming their first silverware since 1966 under Gareth Southgate, reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018, the final of Euro 2020 and the quarters of the World Cup in Qatar last year.
