Manchester businesses urged to step up cyber security in wake of rising attacks

0

The North West Cyber Resilience Centre (NWCRC) is warning businesses to urgently step up protection in the wake of rising cyber crime figures.

In particular, the police-backed not-for-profit organisation is cautioning against email compromise, as that is often a weak point for attackers to take advantage of.

Not only can a cyber attack completely wipe out a small business, but the lasting reputational and financial damage can be substantial.

Phishing

DI Dan Giannasi, head of cyber and innovation at the NWCRC, said: “Usually the most common point of attack for an SME is by a phishing email, where an employee believes it to be a genuine email about an invoice or a service, for example, and clicks on a link.

“From that point, a cyber attacker can quickly take over a whole system and literally hold a business to ransom. One cyber attack can cause significant financial damage and could even wipe out a business completely.”

Increase in cyber attacks

A recent report by Hiscox found that in three years, the proportion of small businesses with fewer than 10 employees becoming victims of a cyber attack has increased from 23% to 36%.

On top of that, the number of overall businesses who have suffered at least one cyber attack in a year has steadily increased every year for the past four years, with 53% of businesses suffering a cyber attack, up from 48% the previous year.

The report also confirmed that the favourite entry point for hackers was once again business email compromise, mentioned by 35% of targeted companies. On the positive side, this figure has reduced, which shows that preventative work and education does make a difference.

Stepping up security

DI Giannasi added: “While cyber crime continues to be a big concern for SMEs, there are many practical and easy steps they can take to really step up cyber security and cyber health.

“A Microsoft report stated that by ensuring basic cyber resilience hygiene, like keeping devices and software up to date and enforcing multi-factor authentication, a business can prevent 98% of attacks.

“Our key messages are to carry out basic cyber health checks and ensure that your employees also understand what is good practice regarding cyber security. The weak point for cyber criminals will be a single employee, so it’s good to train as many employees on good cyber practices as possible.

“From a policing point of view, we are working hard with businesses to educate and provide training for SMEs to prevent such attacks.”

Advice from the NWCRC cyber security consultants

  • Use a strong password and multi-factor authentication
  • Ensure you can recognise phishing emails, and also report any phishing attempts to  [email protected]
  • Ensure all business computer equipment and software is updated regularly

The North West Cyber Resilience Centre works closely with the regional police forces to offer free training to SMEs, which is funded from the proceeds of crime funds (ARIS funding).

The organisation offered 300 free memberships and free training across Greater Manchester throughout 2021 to 2023.

In August this year, it launched 300 free memberships with training to SMEs in Merseyside. Other regions in the North West are to be rolled out over the coming months as well.

The NWCRC runs funded or affordable training and education for small to medium businesses, as well as the education and charity sector. They also work closely with the NW Regional Organised Crime Unit, who investigate cyber crime in the region.

Acetic Acid: A Key Ingredient In The Textile And Leather Industry

0

In some chemical experiments, it’s necessary to recover a solid liquid. It’s often done to make this solution more highly boiling. However, in many cases, it’s impossible to achieve this without the smooth removal of a solvent from a sample. Conducting this procedure efficiently is impossible without a high-quality rotatory evaporator that removes the solvent through the reaction of evaporation. Let’s take a closer look at how this device is used and why it’s a necessary tool in any chemical laboratory.

What are rotary evaporators?

A vacuum rotary evaporator, also known as a rotovap, is a laboratory instrument used for the efficient and gentle evaporation of solvents from samples. It consists of a heating bath, a rotating flask, a condenser, and a collection flask.

How does it work? The sample is placed in the rotating flask, which is partially submerged in the heating bath. As the flask rotates, the solvent evaporates and rises into the condenser, where it is cooled and condensed back into a liquid. The condensed solvent then collects in the collection flask, leaving behind the concentrated sample. Rotary evaporators are widely used in chemistry labs for various applications, such as solvent removal, concentration, and purification of compounds. They offer precise temperature control, reduced exposure to oxygen and contaminants, and efficient solvent recovery.

How to work safely with rotary evaporators?

  • Familiarize yourself with the operating instructions and safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer before using a rotary evaporator.
  • Ensure that the equipment is properly set up and all connections are secure before starting any experiment.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including lab coats, safety glasses, and gloves, to protect yourself from potential chemical splashes or spills.
  • Avoid overfilling the evaporation flask to prevent liquid from entering the condenser or vacuum pump, which could cause damage.
  • Monitor the temperature of the heating bath and adjust it accordingly to prevent overheating or boiling over of the sample.
  • Avoid using volatile or flammable solvents without proper ventilation or explosion-proof equipment.
  • Regularly check and maintain the vacuum pump to ensure proper functioning and prevent contamination of the sample.
  • Do not leave the rotary evaporator unattended during operation and always shut off the equipment properly after use.
  • Dispose of any waste or unused chemicals according to the appropriate safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Seek guidance from experienced researchers or consult with lab supervisors if you have any concerns or questions regarding the safe operation of the rotary evaporator.

How to choose a rotary evaporator?

There are some basic factors you need to consider when choosing an efficient device for chemical experiments that involve evaporation. Here are they:

  • Consider the rotatory evaporator price: The cost of the tool might vary from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the available functionality, construction, maximum volume of liquid that can be contained, and more.
  • Consider the supplier: Make sure to buy instruments used for chemical experiments from licensed suppliers who guarantee proper quality and construction of all the device components.
  • Ensure the availability of safety features: A professional device should have such mechanisms as overheating protection and an emergency stop button to ensure safe operation.
  • Consider user-friendliness: Make sure that the chosen device’s functionality and features available are 100% clear to you.

We hope this guide has just revealed the key things you wanted to learn about the functioning of this laboratory equipment. Make your choice well-thought-out and based on your needs in the application.

Half of workers would turn down a job if flexible working wasn’t offered

A lack of flexible working options is driving almost half of UK workers to reject jobs, new data shows.

The research, by Manchester recruitment firm Robert Half, comes at a time when employers are increasingly concerned about talent attraction and retention.

The firm’s 2024 Salary Guide – which analyses and reports on market salaries, hiring trends, and skills requirements across the UK – revealed that while pay remains a key driver of job moves – with 63% of workers citing salary as a reason to reject an offer – flexible working and development opportunities are also significant motivators.

Almost half (47%) of the workforce would reject a new job if the company didn’t offer flexible working. A further 43% would do so if career development opportunities weren’t suitable.

Staff retention

The report also revealed that 75% of employers are very or somewhat concerned about staff attraction and retention, with almost a third (29%) of workers indicating that they are apprehensive about the impact of heavy and increased workloads on peer retention.

Kris Harris, regional director – UK Technology Solutions, at Robert Half, said: “It’s an incredibly complex hiring landscape at the moment and while salaries remain a significant driver of career moves, candidates are looking for a broader package that gives them more than just a good pay packet.

“As the debate around flexible working grows and news reports continue to highlight those brands that are enforcing office returns, the fact that almost half of workers would turn down a job due to a lack of flexible working options is a concern.

“With such a significant proportion of the UK’s employers concerned about their ability to recruit and retain talent, what candidates want needs to take precedence over what employers would prefer to some degree at least.

“Inflated salaries aren’t feasible long term – indeed the study also showed that 22% of businesses don’t plan to offer pay increases – but flexible working is. Although the recruitment market is slowing, with the labour market data from the Office for National Statistics showing sustained falls in jobs over recent months, skills shortages still remain. In this environment, candidates continue to be able to command more, and right now that includes flexibility.”

Burnout is a real issue in the workforce and these latest statistics suggest this isn’t going to go away on its own. While there does need to be a longer-term solution to excessive workloads, in the interim, the flexible labour market can play a significant role in managing workloads and employers should seriously consider where it may be best to invest in contract staff to retain full time employees.

Ange Postecoglou: The fresh breath that Spurs needed

After struggling for the best part of the last four years, Tottenham Hotspur look like serious contenders  in the 2023/24 Premier League.

Tottenham headed into the most recent international break joint top of the table but have moved clear since the Premier League resumption thanks to two excellent wins.

This is the furthest into a league season that the north London side has been at the summit since December 2020, when they were top after 12 matches with Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho in charge.

Flying start

After this flying start to the season, Tottenham are 10/1 odds to win the league title, as compared to 50/1 at the same time last season.

Many bookies will be picking this as well, if Spurs keep up their good run, and fans can access a review of these bookies and offers they come with on Cheekypunter, which also gives a guide to the best football online betting sites available.

In all their good tidings, credit has to go to one man; Australian manager Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss has not only steadied the north London side’s ship, he has also strengthened their resolve and the Sours fans can dare to dream.

Lower profile

Signed after a successful spell with Scottish giants Celtic, Postecoglou didn’t come with the profile of the few managers that occupied the role before him.

This position had previously been held by Nuno Espirito Santo, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, all with higher profiles and serious Premier League pedigree.

Postecoglou has shown that you only need to focus on the team dynamics and collective willpower to perform, with this arguably his highest profile job as a manager.

The fact that he takes up the team right after the departure of Harry Kane – Spurs’ most outstanding player over the years – and he does well with it, says a lot.

The Australian now has a new record after guiding his team to a 2-0 win over Fulham in the latest round of matches. He set the record for the most points earned by a new manager in the Premier League after nine matches (23) when he led the team to beat Fulham.

Previous record

This record was previously jointly held by Guus Hiddink and Mike Walter who managed 22 points in their first nine matches as Chelsea and Norwich City managers respectively in the 2008-09 and 1992-93 seasons.

Postecoglou’s time at Sours has been made easier by quality players too, some who existed there even before but were rarely used. Yves Bissouma for example, has emerged as a top midfield option for Postecoglou, after struggling for playtime under Conte.

However, the signing of James Maddison has also been key for Spurs and the England international settled in well and easily. He is a regular contributor to Spurs goals and always a threat when on the pitch.

All these factors have made Postecoglou’s time easy while a big favour for them is that they have no European football this season, and thus extended time to rest unlike their fellow title contenders.

Unraveling the Enigma of Memory: Stanislav Kondrashov’s New Publication

In his latest online publication titled “The Science of Memory By Stanislav Kondrashov,” the author invites readers on a captivating journey into one of the most enigmatic facets of human cognition – memory. With this publication, Stanislav Kondrashov aims to provide a scientific exploration of the questions that often intrigue us about our memory’s capabilities, such as how we retain vivid recollections of our first day at school, the aroma of freshly baked cookies at grandma’s house, or why we sometimes forget the whereabouts of our house keys mere moments after setting them down.

Within the pages of his work, Kondrashov delves into the three primary types of memory. First, there’s sensory memory, which he aptly likens to a snapshot stored in the brain, capable of holding vast amounts of sensory data, like the color of an animal darting across the road. However, this type of memory typically lasts only a few seconds. Next is short-term memory, responsible for capturing bite-sized pieces of information freshly processed by our minds, such as fragments of a conversation just heard or a recently memorised phone number. As the author elaborates, short-term memory serves as a repository for a wide range of data, from academic concepts acquired at school to vivid snapshots of life’s moments.

Kondrashov suggests that the transition from short-term to long-term memory is often influenced by the intensity of the emotions experienced during a particular moment, making it significantly easier to recall these memories later on. Furthermore, the author delves into the brain’s regions responsible for memory functions, highlighting the pivotal role of the hippocampus in forming new memories and the amygdala’s responsibility for associating emotional elements with these memories. Long-term memories, on the other hand, are predominantly stored in the cerebral cortex.

Stanislav also endeavors to elucidate the reasons behind forgetting, including the natural decay that disused memories undergo, akin to the gradual spoilage of untouched fruits.

To gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies of memory and uncover the author’s scientific insights, readers are encouraged to explore the full publication and watch the video.

The 2023 Ballon d’Or: Messi, Haaland or Mbappe?

The 2023 Ballon d’Or will be handed out in Paris tonight with Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe fighting it out to land football’s most prestigious individual prize.

Vincent Garcia, the editor in chief at award organisers France Football, said over the weekend: “It’s tight this year, it’s very, very tight.”

Let’s take a look at the contenders…

Lionel Messi

The seven-time winner has had another memorable 12 months, finally landing the title he craved most – the World Cup.

The Argentina captain was the driving force behind his nation’s triumph in Qatar, single-handedly driving his nation through the knockout stage before scoring twice in the final against France.

His influence at Paris Saint-Germain waned towards the end of his spell in France but he still ended the 2022/23 campaign with a second Ligue 1 winners’ medal.

His move to Inter Miami has had a transformational effect on MLS, and his early displays helped the Florida club land the Leagues Cup – the first trophy in the franchise’s history.

Erling Haaland

The Norwegian was at his brilliant best in Manchester City’s 3-0 win at Manchester United yesterday with two goals and an assist but it’s his achievements from last season that mark him out as a serious contender.

Haaland scored 52 goals in 53 games in all competitions as City landed their first Champions League crown as well as domestic silverware in the Premier League and FA Cup.

Named the PFA Player of the Year, the 23-year-old remains the best number nine in England and, arguably, world football.

Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe played a more significant role in PSG’s title win than Messi – also landing the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award – but it was his exploits in Qatar that propel him into this illustrious company.

The 24-year-old landed the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the pulsating 3-3 draw with Argentina in the final. It was the first final hat-trick since Geoff Hurst’s for England in 1966.

Ballon d’Or Feminin

Unlike the men’s event, there is one outstanding candidate to land the women’s award – Spanish superstar Aitana Bonmati.

Bonmati was named player of the tournament as Spain won the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and also played a leading role in club side Barcelona winning a Liga F and Champions League double.

When and Where?

The award will be handed out tonight at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. The ranking reveal starts on social media at 4.15pm UK time with the ceremony itself getting underway at 7.45pm.

How to watch

The event is being streamed on L’Equipe’s YouTube channel. You can also watch it in the UK on TNT Sports and Discovery+.

Exploring the Enigmatic World of Elephants: Stanislav Kondrashov’s Latest Publication

In his latest publication titled “Elephants: Giants of the Animal Kingdom By Stanislav Kondrashov,” the author takes readers on a comprehensive journey into the captivating world of elephants. These magnificent creatures, often referred to as “gentle giants,” are the focal point of this insightful exploration.

Stanislav Kondrashov portrays elephants as remarkable beings, celebrated not only for their imposing size but also for their serene and gentle demeanor. He describes them as compassionate and intelligent animals, capable of influencing entire ecosystems with the mere movement of their colossal limbs.

According to the author, elephants stand out not only as the largest land mammals but also as creatures with exceptional cognitive abilities. Stanislav Kondrashov highlights their capacity for mourning the loss of fellow companions and their ability to comprehend human languages, illustrating their high level of intelligence.

Kondrashov also emphasizes that elephants are masters of communication. These majestic animals use ultrasound, emitting sounds at extremely low frequencies that escape human perception, allowing them to communicate effectively over vast distances, sometimes up to 10 miles away.

Throughout history, elephant communities have displayed a unique characteristic: they are led by the eldest female within the group. In Stanislav Kondrashov’s perspective, this trait symbolizes a matriarchal society, where the wisdom and seniority of the most experienced female guide the herd to new grazing grounds and safer locations.

The author also sheds light on the extraordinary habit of elephant families, which keep their offspring with them for an extended period. Elephant calves, as detailed in the publication, stay with their mothers for over 16 years, making it one of the lengthiest childhoods in the animal kingdom.

Sadly, Stanislav Kondrashov reminds readers that elephants face constant threats from poachers due to the value of their tusks. Environmentalists worldwide are passionately advocating for their protection and conservation.

Revitalize Your Ride: Discover the Power of Car Valeting and Detailing

Are you looking to give your car a fresh new look? Professional car valeting services in Manchester can help you achieve that. Understanding the importance of regular car valeting and the key aspects of professional car detailing can make a significant difference in the overall appearance and value of your vehicle. In this article, we will explore the process of car valeting and detailing, how to choose the right service in Bristol, the benefits of professional car valeting and detailing, and answer some frequently asked questions.

Understanding Car Valeting and Detailing

Car valeting and detailing go beyond the basic car wash. While a car wash focuses on cleaning the exterior of the vehicle, car valeting and detailing involve a more thorough cleaning and restoration process. These services aim to enhance and protect both the interior and exterior of your car.

When it comes to car valeting, it’s not just about making your car look clean; it’s about ensuring that every nook and cranny is free from dirt and grime. The process starts with a thorough exterior wash, where professionals use high-quality cleaning agents and tools to remove dirt, dust, and other contaminants from the car’s surface. They pay special attention to areas like the wheels, tires, and undercarriage, as these are often the most neglected parts of a vehicle.

Once the exterior is clean, the focus shifts to the interior. Car valeting professionals meticulously clean and vacuum every inch of your car’s interior, from the dashboard to the seats and carpets. They use specialized products to remove stains and odors, leaving your car smelling fresh and looking brand new.

The Importance of Regular Car Valeting

Regular car valeting is essential to maintain the cleanliness and condition of your vehicle. Over time, dirt, dust, and grime can accumulate inside and outside your car, affecting its appearance and potentially causing damage. Valeting not only keeps your car looking its best but also helps preserve its value.

By regularly valeting your car, you are taking proactive steps to prevent long-term damage. The accumulation of dirt and grime can lead to paint corrosion and deterioration of the car’s interior materials. Regular valeting helps to remove these contaminants, protecting your car from potential harm.

Moreover, regular car valeting can have a positive impact on your overall driving experience. A clean and well-maintained car provides a more comfortable and enjoyable ride. It also creates a positive impression on passengers and potential buyers if you ever decide to sell your vehicle.

Key Aspects of Professional Car Detailing

Professional car detailing takes the valeting process a step further. It involves a deep cleaning, restoration, and protection of your vehicle’s interior and exterior surfaces. Detailing is performed by trained professionals who use specialized techniques and products to bring out the car’s full potential.

One of the key aspects of professional car detailing is paint correction. This process involves removing imperfections such as swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation from the car’s paintwork. Detailers use advanced polishing techniques and compounds to restore the paint’s shine and clarity, giving your car a showroom finish.

Interior detailing is another crucial aspect of the process. Detailers thoroughly clean and condition all interior surfaces, including leather, vinyl, and plastic. They use specialized products to protect these surfaces from cracking, fading, and aging. Additionally, they pay attention to small details like cleaning the air vents, door jambs, and even the trunk area.

When it comes to professional car detailing, no detail is overlooked. Detailers meticulously clean and restore every part of your vehicle, from the engine bay to the wheels and tires. They use specialized tools and techniques to remove brake dust, tar, and other contaminants, leaving your car looking pristine.

The Process of Car Valeting and Detailing

The process of car valeting and detailing typically involves several steps, including an initial inspection, washing, interior cleaning, exterior polishing, and protection.

Initial Inspection and Washing

Before commencing the valeting or detailing process, the service provider will inspect your car thoroughly. This inspection helps identify specific areas that require attention, such as stains, scratches, or paintwork imperfections. Following the inspection, the car will undergo a comprehensive wash to remove dirt and debris.

Interior Cleaning and Detailing

The interior of your car is where you spend most of your time, so it’s important to keep it clean. The valeting and detailing service will deep clean the upholstery, vacuum the carpets, and clean the dashboard, windows, and other surfaces. Additionally, they may treat the seats and dashboard with special protectants to prevent fading and cracking.

Exterior Polishing and Protection

The exterior of your car is constantly exposed to various elements that can affect its paintwork. Car valeting and detailing services typically include polishing and protection treatments to restore the shine and protect the paint from UV rays, pollution, and other contaminants. This step often involves a process called paint correction, which removes imperfections and restores the paint’s original finish.

Choosing the Right Valeting and Detailing Service in Bristol

When deciding on a car valeting and detailing service in Bristol, there are several factors to consider.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Service

Firstly, consider the reputation and experience of the service provider. Look for customer reviews and testimonials to ensure their reliability and quality of work. It’s also important to inquire about the products and techniques they use, ensuring they are safe and effective for your car. Lastly, consider the convenience and pricing options to find the best fit for your needs.

Understanding Pricing and Packages

Car valeting and detailing services offer various packages with different levels of service and pricing. Take the time to understand what each package includes and how it aligns with your requirements and budget. Some services may offer additional treatments like ceramic coatings or odor removal, which may be worth considering for the long-term protection and value of your car.

The Benefits of Professional Car Valeting and Detailing

Investing in professional car valeting and detailing services offers numerous benefits beyond just a clean car.

Maintaining Your Car’s Value

Regular valeting and detailing help maintain your car’s value by preserving its appearance, preventing damage, and minimizing wear and tear. A well-maintained car often commands a higher resale value.

Enhancing Your Car’s Appearance

Professional detailing can restore your car’s shine, making it look brand new. Attention to detail, such as removing scratches, buffing the paintwork, and restoring faded interiors, significantly improves your car’s overall appearance.

Ensuring a Healthier Driving Environment

A thorough interior cleaning removes dirt, dust, and allergens that can accumulate over time. This helps create a healthier and more enjoyable driving environment for you and your passengers.
