Sellick Partnership is proud to announce the return of the Manchester Professionals’ Football League (MPFL), which will kick off its 15th charity annual tournament.
The event not only showcases the region’s sporting talent but also fosters professional networking, all while supporting St Ann’s Hospice.
Since its inception, the MPFL has raised £15,000 for the charity which provides care and support to patients and families in Greater Manchester that have been impacted by life-limiting illnesses.
On this milestone year, all proceeds from the tournament will once again go to St Ann’s Hospice, continuing Sellick Partnership’s longstanding commitment to making a positive difference in the community. This comes as St Ann’s Hospice is in the process of raising funds for a new, purpose-built hospice.

Plans have been submitted for a state-of-the-art acoustics building which would bring world-class research facilities to Crescent Salford’s innovation zone.
Housing the research, commercial and teaching activities of the University of Salford’s Acoustics Department, the 1,300m2 building would represent the second staging post in the creation of Crescent Innovation following work commencing on Salford Rise in September.
Proposed by the Crescent partnership, comprising the University of Salford, Salford City Council and ECF – a joint venture between Homes England, Legal & General and Muse– Crescent Innovation will build on existing research and development capabilities to drive further economic growth in Salford and facilitate enhanced links between academia, research and business.
Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed as the main contractor to deliver the acoustics building, having previously collaborated with the university on the creation of multiple new learning environments including the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre.
Salford’s world-class acoustic facilities are designed to meet the highest technical specifications and the requirements of measurement standards. Each space will be supported by one of the largest acoustics research groups in the world and the hands-on expertise of specialist technical staff.
In line with the latest sustainability standards, the all-electric building will target a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ and utilise low-energy and low-carbon technologies to minimise energy consumption and reduce the carbon footprint of the building.
Within the 29-acre Crescent Innovation area, which lies north of the university’s Peel Park campus, the building will be located on a former industrial site on Lissadel Street.
If planning permission is granted, work is anticipated to start on-site in summer 2025 and complete in spring 2027.
Director of Acoustics at the University of Salford, professor Trevor Cox said: “Sound is integral to life, and so the work we’ll do in this building will impact the public. To take one example, we might be working with industry and government to reduce the harms to health that noise creates. The new laboratories will help us to forge a better sounding future.”

Two chiefs have been named in the New Year Honours List 2025.
Assistant Chief Officer at Greater Manchester Police, Ian Cosh (main picture), has been made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Officially recognising his services to policing, ACO Cosh has been responsible for securing almost £2 million funding from the Home Office to support GMP officer recruitment and ensure that new officers are better equipped when serving the public. This has included upgrading the fleet, uniforms, technology, and equipment.
He led GMP’s support services into the latest His Majesty’s Inspectorate for Constabulary inspection, which showed GMP to be the most improved force in the country, and has played a critical role within a number of key issues such officer uplift, despite financial challenges.
ACO Cosh said: “I am incredibly proud and grateful to receive this honour. The work that we all do at GMP is a collaborative endeavour, and I would not be here today without the support and cooperation of our officers and staff.”
Meanwhile, chief resource officer, Lee Rawlinson, has been honoured for his time as director for Sustainability and Service Operations at the Environment Agency.
Chief constable Stephen Watson QPM said: “Both ACO Cosh and CRO Rawlinson are wholly deserving of the honours they have received. They have both been recognised for their unstinting professional commitment and for delivering tangible outcomes in the public interest.
“Their nominations rightly reflect their dedication to public service, their being so valuable a part of our collective endeavour; and to their possessing an abundance of the attitude, skill and determination that has helped to ensure that GMP remains both resurgent and at the forefront of modern policing.”
A 38-year-old man has died following a knife attack in Rochdale.
At around 2.30am on New Year’s Day, police attended Sussex Street to reports of someone having a severe knife wound.
He died at the scene “despite the best attempts of emergency services”, the force said.
A 30-year-old man is in hospital, currently in a stable condition.
Initial enquiries suggest this was an isolated and targeted attack involving two people, and there is no wider threat to the public.
A scene remains in place whilst another scene is linked at nearby Essex Street.
Detective chief superintendent Neil Jones said: “Following developments overnight we have launched a murder investigation after the sad loss of life on New Year’s Day.
“My sincere condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
“Whilst no formal arrests have been made as yet, we are not currently seeking anyone else in connection with this incident.
“Our officers and patrols will remain in the area to provide visible reassurance to the local community whilst we appeal for more information from those who may have heard or seen something from last night and into the early hours of today.
“We are keen to speak to anyone who can assist with our investigation as we know the smallest bit of detail will help us piece together the moments that led to this tragic loss of life.
“That includes anyone who may have access to or footage from video doorbells, dashcams, CCTV or mobile phones that could have captured the incident or the moments before or after it.”

Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes as flooding hit many parts of Greater Manchester on New Year’s Day.
Downpours which began on New Year’s Eve instigated 90 flood warnings – with 16 remaining in place early this morning including for the River Mersey.
Emergency services declared a major incident as hundreds of people had to be rescued from cut-off buildings, including a block of flats at Stockport’s Meadow Mill. ing we have assisted the evacuation of several residents at a block of flats at Meadow Mill. A council refuge centre is at Holdsworth Mill in Reddish.
Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service assisted council staff in safely evacuating 445 people including residents and members of staff from Britannia Country House Hotel in south Manchester. Those displaced are being supported by the local authority.
Flooding left cars stranded in several parts of Salford and Stockport, with water entering people’s properties in Cheadle.
Even Factory nightclub, on Princess Street, was forced to evacuate the building due to flooding, as revellers celebrated the New Year at 1.15am.
Flood waters also impacted many service across the major trans-Pennine routes. Rail travellers were advised to delay journeys.
Bev Craig, leader of Manchester City Council, said: “We have been working closely with the police, fire service and Environment Agency through the night to monitor water levels across the city – and provide support and guidance to our residents who might be affected. Some residents have been asked to evacuate where the Environment Agency has issued flood warnings, and these residents have been contacted directly and supported.
“Thankfully we are seeing signs that water levels are beginning to fall, and it is unlikely that further evacuations will be necessary. However, water levels will continue to be monitored over the coming hours.
“We would ask anyone who is travelling today to take extra care and check the TfGM website for the latest updates and advice. And you can find information about what to do if your area is at risk of flooding on the council’s website.
“I would like to thank our emergency services colleagues – alongside council staff – for their efforts overnight and today in keeping Manchester residents safe.”
Chief superintendent Colette Rose said: “We are continuing to monitor the whole of Greater Manchester as we look to co-ordinate the emergency response involving a variety of services.
“Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been key to this to ensure we can keep those people and communities safe after the severe weather we have had.
“Thankfully, due to the efforts of all involved so far no one has been seriously injured or come to harm and would like to thank members of the public for their continued co-operation especially around the road closures in place and looking out for each other.
“Anyone still affected should continue to check the relevant detail being shared by their local council, the fire service and Transport for Greater Manchester to ensure they can get the support available that may be needed.”

Police are investigating following reports of an altercation in Chorlton, in what was believed to be a robbery.
At around 7.54pm on Sunday, officers responded to the incident on Nicolas Road.
It is believed two men had attacked another man, aged 48, leaving him with serious life-threatening injuries, for which he is still being treated in hospital.
One of the men is reported to have used an e-bike and used the vehicle to leave the scene shortly after.
One man (46) has been arrested on suspicion of assault. He remains in custody for questioning.
Enquiries are currently ongoing and a scene remains in place in the Nicolas Road and adjoining Oswald Road. A nearby property is being examined by officers as part of the ongoing work.
The attack is being treated as an isolated incident, with no wider threat to the community. Additional officers are in the area and will be for the coming days, to provide reassurance for local residents.
As officers continue their work, they are now appealing for anyone with any information regarding the incident to please come forward.
This includes anyone who witnessed the incident, or lives nearby and has any relevant dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage.
Detective inspector Shauna Hayden said: “Officers are on the scene fully investigating all aspects of this shocking incident that has left a man with serious injuries in hospital.
“While our work so far has secured an arrest, we are now appealing for anyone with any relevant information to please come forward.
“If you saw anything or heard something from around the time of the incident, I would urge you to get in touch, as your assistance could be vital to getting the answers the victim in this attack deserves.”

Rightmove has recorded its busiest ever Boxing Day for new seller activity, with a record number of properties listed for sale by agents on December 26.
The number of new properties coming to the market for sale was 26% higher than Boxing Day 2023, when the previous record was set.
Traditionally, there is a bounce in home-moving activity on Boxing Day from one of the quietest days of the year in Christmas Day, which leads into the busy January moving season.
The majority (46%) of homes listed by new sellers were mid-market, second stepper homes – consisting of three and four bed properties.
More than a third (35%) of homes listed for sale were smaller, typical first-time buyer type properties, and 18% were the largest homes at the top of the ladder.
The South East saw the most new properties coming to market, followed by the East of England and the South West.
Rightmove also recorded its busiest ever Boxing Day for visits to its platform, beating the previous record set in 2021.
Steve Pimblett, Rightmove’s chief data officer said: “We’ve seen a record-breaking Boxing Day, not only for people turning to the Rightmove platform once the Christmas Day festivities are over, but also for home-movers taking action and getting ahead of a 2025.”
