Manchester as a Launchpad for Global Online Gaming Innovations

0

Manchester’s rise as a digital innovation hub has significant implications for the global online gaming industry. While the city fosters various ground-breaking gaming technologies, it also parallels the worldwide popularity of online casinos like Videoslots. This article explores Manchester’s dynamic influence on diverse aspects of online gaming, including its impact beyond local enterprises.

Manchester’s Technological Evolution

In recent years, Manchester has emerged as a beacon of technological innovation, distinguishing itself as a powerhouse in the digital realm. This transformation is not just a mere change but a revolution, led by a blend of historic industrial spirit and modern technological prowess. At the core of this evolution are Manchester’s vibrant tech clusters, where startups and tech giants coalesce, fostering an environment of collaboration and creativity.

Key to this development has been the city’s focus on cultivating a skilled workforce, with universities and educational institutions closely aligning with industry needs. This synergy has catalysed a dynamic ecosystem, where cutting-edge research and practical application intersect, propelling Manchester to the forefront of technological advancements. This progressive landscape has created a fertile ground for various sectors, especially online gaming, to thrive and innovate, marking Manchester as a crucible of digital transformation in the UK.

Spotlight on Online Gaming Successes

The success of Manchester in the online gaming arena is a testament to its innovative spirit and forward-thinking approach. This city has become a nurturing ground for gaming companies that are now setting trends globally. One such success story is a company that has developed a ground-breaking multiplayer gaming platform, known for its high-speed performance and exceptional graphics. This platform has not only attracted a massive global user base but has also set new standards in online multiplayer gaming experiences.

Another notable success is a company specialising in developing casual gaming apps that have topped download charts worldwide. Their games, known for their engaging content and user-friendly design, have captivated a broad audience, transcending age and geographical barriers.

These companies, among others, represent Manchester’s thriving online gaming ecosystem. Their achievements are not confined to commercial success but extend to innovation in gaming technology and user engagement strategies.

Government Support and Investment Impact

The government’s role in bolstering Manchester’s online gaming industry is significant, reflecting a commitment to nurturing this sector as a key component of the city’s economic strategy. This support manifests in various forms, including favourable policies, financial incentives, and infrastructural investments. A notable initiative is the provision of tax reliefs and grants specifically tailored for tech start-ups, which have been instrumental in lowering the entry barriers for emerging online gaming companies. Another initiative is the government’s support for facilitated partnerships between the private sector and academic institutions, enhancing research and development capabilities essential for innovation in gaming technology.

Investment in digital infrastructure, such as high-speed internet and state-of-the-art tech parks, has also played a crucial role. This infrastructural backbone has not only attracted new ventures to Manchester but also provided existing gaming companies with the resources needed to scale up and compete globally. The cumulative impact of these government efforts is evident in the flourishing online gaming ecosystem of Manchester, showcasing a successful model of public-private collaboration driving technological advancement and economic growth.

Manchester’s Global Gaming Influence

Manchester’s influence on the global gaming industry is profound and multifaceted. The city’s online gaming firms are not just prominent players locally but also trendsetters on the world stage. They have pioneered several gaming technologies and practices that have become benchmarks globally. For instance, a Manchester-based gaming company has developed an advanced cloud gaming service, allowing gamers worldwide to access high-quality games without the need for expensive hardware. This innovation has democratised gaming, making it more accessible and inclusive.

Additionally, Manchester’s gaming companies are leading in the integration of blockchain technology in gaming, enhancing security and creating new possibilities for in-game economies. These advancements are not just technical feats but also represent a shift in how gaming is perceived and consumed globally. Manchester’s ability to constantly push the boundaries of what’s possible in online gaming has cemented its reputation as a city where future gaming trends are shaped, influencing the industry far beyond its borders.

UK Fast founder Lawrence Jones convicted of raping two women

0

Tech tycoon Lawrence Jones will be sentenced next week after being convicted of raping two women.

Jones, 55, of Brooks Drive in Hale Barns, who was the CEO of UK Fast, was convicted at Manchester Crown Court, following the historic rape of two women in Greater Manchester.

This follows a conviction in January 2023 for a sexual assault against a third female.

The dad-of-four, once dubbed a “cloud computing king”, was considered an influential technology businessman with an estimated wealth of around £700m.

Investigation

A police investigation began after the first woman disclosed that she had been the victim of sexual assault back in March 2019.

She had first met Jones in 2013, while she was working for Jones’ company, UK Fast.

For four weeks Jones continually asked her to meet him outside of work and told her that it was her duty to do so. He also invited her on a business trip to London.

They went out for a meal and while in a taxi, Jones acted and said inappropriate things to her making her feel very uncomfortable.

On the return to the hotel, they had a drink at the bar and returned to their rooms. Jones made sexual advances towards her but when she pulled away, he became verbally aggressive.

Jones continued to pressure her and then sexually assaulted her. She eventually managed to get back to the safety of her room.

The victim told her mum what happened when she got home and resigned from UK Fast.

In May 2019, Jones was interviewed under caution at Longsight Police station where he answered ‘no comment’ to all questions. He was subsequently charged with sexual assault.

Second victim

In January 2021, a second woman came forward and disclosed that in 1993 she was a university student at a University in Manchester. During that time she and her friends worked at a bar/restaurant on Oxford Road in Manchester.

On one occasion, Jones approached her and invited her to come for a drink at his flat after she finished work. As Jones was dating her friend at the time, she decided it would be a good idea to get to know him better for her friend’s sake.

When she arrived at Jones flat, he poured her a glass of wine and from then, she could only recall snapshots of being in his bedroom with no recollection of how she got there.

Stating to the court that her body ‘was not her own’ and it was unusual as she only had one glass of wine, Jones sexually assaulted her.

She did not consent, she wanted to get off the bed and Jones became aggressive and shouted at her that she should realise that she “could not treat men like this and shouldn’t lead them on.”

The woman lost consciousness and when she came round, Jones was sexually assaulting her and raped her.

She struggled to deal with what happened to her and self-referred to the St Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre. During the years after this assault, she told her friends what had happened to her, but she did not feel able to report this to the police at the time.

Third victim

A year later, a third woman (Woman C) also bravely spoke of her experiences and disclosed to officers that back in 1993, she worked in several drinking establishments across Manchester.

During this time, she became friendly with Jones who organised and played music events in pubs across Manchester.

On one occasion Jones came into her bedroom and asked her to smell a bottle of liquid he was holding; she did not know what this was and shortly after she had smelt it, she began to feel woozy and lay on her bed.

Jones then proceeded to rape woman C, she felt she could not do anything about it due to being incapacitated through the drug.

In 2019, she disclosed the offence to a friend and then later disclosed to her husband. In 2022, she reported the incident to Greater Manchester Police.

Charges

Jones was found guilty of the rape of both the second and third women. He will be sentenced next Friday for the offences against all three women.

Detective constable Stewart of Greater Manchester Police said: “Firstly, we commend the immense courage shown by the women in both investigations for coming forward to disclose the traumatic experiences they have endured.

“Their bravery has been pivotal in bringing Lawrence Jones to account for his heinous actions and we want to express our deepest gratitude for their strength and resilience throughout this challenging investigation and trial.

“It is our sincere hope that this verdict sends a powerful message to survivors of rape and other sexual offences that their voices will be heard, and that justice can be achieved no matter when it happened or who was involved. No one should suffer in silence, and we encourage anyone who has been a victim of such crimes to come forward and report them to the police.

“We are here to support you, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions. The collaborative efforts of the victims, witnesses, and our dedicated investigative team were essential in uncovering the truth and securing this conviction. We understand the profound impact that such incidents can have on individuals, and we remain committed to providing support to those involved in this investigation and to those victims who reach out and disclose to us.”

Everton v Manchester United: How will Ten Hag’s side cope in Goodison cauldron? Preview, expected line-ups and prediction

The State of Play

For all the noise surrounding Manchester United, the fact is they’ve won four of their last five Premier League games. Ten days ago they’d have fancied their chances of extending that record at Goodison Park but Sunday now has a totally different feel about it.

Everton’s 10-point deduction for breaching financial rules, imposed last Friday, has had a galvanising and unifying effect on the Toffees with sporting director Kevin Thelwell claiming it’s added “additional fuel” to their levels of motivation.

Goodison will show what it thinks of the sanction with protests expected but the usually vocal Everton support will crack up the noise even more behind the team to make it a difficult afternoon for Erik ten Hag’s men.

Everton now find themselves second from bottom of the Premier League and in the thick of the relegation dogfight. Their recent form is good, though, with six wins from their last nine games in all competitions.

Sixth-placed United have struggled in difficult circumstances recently – demonstrated by their limp display in the high-octane atmosphere of a Manchester derby and their capitulation at FC Copenhagen following Marcus Rashford’s dismissal. This is another test of character for Ten Hag and his players.

Shaw boost for Manchester United

Team News

As with all clubs this weekend, Everton will hope their international contingent return unscathed.

Club captain Seamus Coleman completed 90 minutes for the Under-21s in midweek and could be in contention for his first appearance since May. Ben Godfrey and Michael Keane also played and may be involved.

The situation is less positive for United with a raft of injury concerns for Ten Hag to content with.

Christian Eriksen (knee), Lisandro Martinez (foot) and Casemiro (thigh) are definitely out with goalkeeper Andre Onana being assessed after sustaining an injury while away with Cameroon. Jonny Evans (thigh), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (illness), Facundo Pellistri (undisclosed) and Rasmus Hojlund (thigh) are also fighting to be fit.

The good news is England left-back Luke Shaw has returned to training, although this weekend could come too soon.

Expected line-ups

Everton: Pickford; Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Doucoure, Onana, Garner; Harrison, McNeil, Calvert-Lewin

Manchester United: Onana; Dalot, Maguire, Lindelof, Reguilon; McTominay, Amrabat, Fernandes; Rashford, Garnacho, Martial

What they said

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the atmosphere expected at Goodison Park
“I’ve played in a lot of games against United at Goodison, and the atmosphere is always incredible. I expect the weekend to be no different, if not more electric.
“I’m sure the fans will be ready. Us as players, we’ll prepare the same as normal and make sure we’re ready to put in a performance and collect the three points.
“I think, given the circumstances, I’ve sensed a lot of unity and togetherness.

Erik ten Hag told beIN Sport about his side’s three upcoming away games, at Everton, Galatasaray and Newcastle
“All games are very important, but our away record this season so far is very good.
“We can take confidence and strong belief into those games.
“But [we need to] go from game to game, the first game is the most important – Everton – and we’re looking forward [to it].”

When and how to watch

The game kicks off at 16:30 UK time on Sunday, and will be shown on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Ultra HDR in the UK with coverage beginning at 16:00 as part of Super Sunday.

Prediction

United have shown themselves to be fragile at points this season and a crippling injury list certainly won’t help. Everton are in decent form and the sheer will of the crowd in a hostile Goodison atmosphere will spur them on to a crucial three points.

Everton v Man United: A look at how teams have fared in first post-deduction games

Everton will look to respond to receiving the heaviest points deduction in Premier League history when they host Manchester United at what is sure to be a vociferous Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Toffees have been docked 10 points for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, dropping them into the bottom three and invoking the wrath of Everton supporters.

The Goodison Park faithful will look to show the Premier League what they think of the punishment, while also spurring their team onto what is now a much-needed three points.

But how have other teams got on in their first games following points deductions?

Anfield capacity increased for game with Man Utd
Hamilton denies contacting Horner over Red Bull switch

Juventus 3-3 Atalanta – January 2023

Although the deduction was eventually reduced to 10 points, Juventus’ initial 15-point penalty caused shockwaves last season, throwing their Champions League qualification hopes into doubt.

The first game following the announcement of the punishment was a home Serie A fixture against fellow European chasers Atalanta. The fans responded angrily, with whistles drowning out the pre-game Serie A anthem while the placing of league-related materials on the field provoked a furious response.

Once the game kicked off, Juventus put in a committed display, eventually drawing 3-3 after twice coming from behind to earn a point. Massimiliano Allegri’s men would end up finishing seventh, missing out on European qualification after receiving a ban from UEFA’s competitions for breaching financial fair play rules. They would have finished fourth without the points deduction.

Portsmouth 3-2 Hull City – March 2010

Just two seasons removed from winning the FA Cup, Portsmouth’s crippling financial difficulties meant the club fell into administration, receiving an immediate nine-point deduction.

Manager Avram Grant called it a “sad day for football”, hinting he may even field a weakened team in Pompey’s first game after the announcement as a protest to the deduction.

Grant instead played his strongest side, and they responded with a 3-2 home victory against fellow strugglers Hull City as Kanu scored a winner in the 89th minute in front of a rocking Fratton Park.

The result counted for little in the end as Portsmouth went down anyway shortly after, though they did give their fans something to shout about that afternoon against Hull in what was the start of a dramatic downfall, one that saw the club drop all the way to League Two.

Derby County 3-2 Bournemouth – November 2021

Derby had already been deducted 12 points when they incurred a further nine-point penalty in November of the 2021-22 Championship campaign.

Wayne Rooney was the manager at the time, and he must have been dreading the visit of high-flying Bournemouth, with the Cherries arriving at Pride Park unbeaten in their previous 15.

But Rooney’s side responded magnificently, with Tom Lawrence’s second-half brace enough to help Derby come from behind and claim a stunning 3-2 victory, one that moved the Rams up to zero points.

Derby would not be able to overhaul the hefty 21-point penalty, eventually going down to the third tier for the first time since 1986. The Rams would not finish bottom, though, with that indignity instead suffered by Barnsley.

Fiorentina 2-3 Inter, Milan 2-1 Lazio, Rimini 1-1 Juventus – September 2006

Three of the clubs most stung by the Calciopoli scandal that rocked Italian football were Fiorentina, Milan and Juventus, the latter of whom were relegated to Serie B.

Milan saw their initial 15-point deduction for the 2006-07 season reduced to eight, though the most painful aspect was their 30-point penalty for the 2005-06 campaign, which dropped them from third to second and meant that city rivals Inter were handed the title for that season when Juve were demoted.

Their first game back came at home to Lazio, another side involved in the scandal but punished much less harsher than Milan. The hosts would come out of the game victorious, Filippo Inzaghi and Ricardo Oliveira scoring to secure a 2-1 win.

Fiorentina were docked 15 points, and even a Luca Toni double couldn’t help them avoid defeat on the opening weekend of the Serie A season, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice, including a 93rd-minute winner to give Inter the three points and leave Fiorentina on -15.

Juventus kicked off their first ever season in Serie B with a 1-1 away draw at Rimini, despite boasting the likes of Alessandro Del Piero, Giorgio Chiellini, Gianluigi Buffon and even Ballon d’Or winner Pavel Nedved in their starting XI.

The season would end in glory for two of the three sides, as Juventus bounced straight back to Serie A at the first time of asking, while Milan would go on to win the Champions League, beating Liverpool in the final. Fiorentina would finish sixth, missing out on Champions League qualification because of the points deduction.

‘Catch me if you can’ motorbike thief jailed for 30 months

0

A Longsight man has been jailed for his part in a host of motorbike thefts across Greater Manchester.

Mark Fay, 29, of Thoresway Road, Longsight, was found guilty yesterday and sentenced to 30 months behind bars.

Whilst he was wanted by police, Fay goaded officers, telling them, “catch me if you can”.

The taunting words were mirrored in the captions of the videos he posted on social media which were found by officers tasked with locating him.

A lengthy investigation was launched and in September, Fay’s goading words became meaningless, as he was caught, arrested, and charged with eight counts of theft of motor vehicle offences and three counts of handling stolen goods.

We will catch you

PC Davies said: “Fay had a clear set-up, he planned the offences carefully. It was a lengthy investigation by the team into a clearly organised spate of thefts.

“This showcases the lengths we take in our investigations – no matter how organised or sophisticated the group or individual may be, we will thoroughly investigate and put offenders away in jail.

“And our message to criminals is we can catch you, we will catch you and we will endeavour to catch all those who threaten the safety of our neighbourhoods in Greater Manchester.”

Market-Making: Maintaining Stability and Liquidity for Cryptocurrency Exchanges

The cryptocurrency market is gaining momentum. Today it’s not just a space for tech-savvy people or crypto enthusiasts – it’s a sector where large companies, financial institutions, and firms tap into actively, regardless of all the instability and lack of regulations. One of the most common ways institutions use the crypto space is market-making, which acquires prominence in the developing crypto landscape.

Large financial organizations may partner with different trading platforms (e.g. Binance, Coinbase, KuCoin, etc.) and add liquidity to their trading markets, reducing price spreads and making a profit from retail and institutional participation. Over 50 entities are serving as market makers worldwide. The largest share of market makers falls in Singapore and the USA (data by Cointelegraph Research).

So who are market makers and what is their role? Let’s find it out today.

How Market Makers Work

In digital assets markets, market makers are pivotal in mitigating sharp jumps in supply and demand. They contribute to price stability and create a more reliable trading environment. That is a hard job, given the price volatility in the crypto markets. Factors such as speculative trading and sharp market jumps hurdle the work of market makers reducing their efficiency.

The main role of market markets is to simultaneously offer bid and ask prices for a digital asset. To see how they work, let’s consider an example: a crypto market maker places an order on a crypto exchange to buy a token at $50 and at the same time sets the ask price to sell this token at $52. The difference between those prices is called “spread” and makes up a market maker’s profit margin.

The Role of Market Makers in the Financial Markets

The primary functions of market makers include:

Liquidity provision. Market makers continuously quote buy and sell prices for various cryptos, ensuring there are always readily available buyers and sellers.
Reducing bid-ask spreads. By placing competitive buy and sell orders, market makers help cut bid-ask spreads, making it cost-effective for traders to execute their orders.
Market stability. Market makers mitigate price volatility by providing continuous liquidity. They help prevent rapid and drastic price fluctuations, creating a more predictable trading environment.
Efficient price discovery. Market makers ensure that assets are traded at fair market price, as they actively contribute to the order book.
Algorithmic trading. Many market makers use algorithms to automate trading decisions and respond rapidly to market movements.

Wrapping Up

Market makers are vital in establishing a liquid crypto market. Their activities enhance the trading experience for retail traders and institutional investors by promoting price stability, reducing costs, and ensuring that assets are readily tradable at any given time.

Rochdale fly-tipper fined after being caught on camera

0

A Rochdale man has been fined after a security camera recorded him and two others dumping household waste from the back of a van.

Zeeshan Ali, 23, of Ashley Close, appeared at Manchester & Salford Magistrates’ Court on November 17, where he pleaded guilty to depositing waste illegally.

Mr Ali admitted his involvement at an interview with the council but refused to identify the other two individuals who participated in the fly-tipping.

The recording played in court showed Mr Ali driving his vehicle to Riverside Drive, Rochdale, in March, before multiple bags of waste were taken from it and discarded.

He was ordered to pay a total of £1,365.20 in fines, costs, and a victim surcharge.

Councillor Liam O’Rourke said: “Incidents like this drive me and most of our law-abiding residents up the wall and dumping waste wherever you feel is not acceptable. We will continue to enforce fines and penalties on those who do not take the duty of care when disposing of waste and thank those who report incidents like this to us.

“Waste must be disposed of responsibly either at the local recycling centre, through a licensed carrier, or book a free bulky waste collection if you have large items, there’s just no excuse.”

The council offers two free bulky waste collections of three items per household per year. Any additional items are charged at just £2.50 each.

Anfield capacity increased for Manchester United visit

Liverpool hope to open a section of their extended Anfield Road Stand for the visit of Manchester United on December 17.

The work to add a second tier to the stand is nearing completion having been delayed by a previous contractor going into administration.

If a test event that will require the assistance of 3,000 people is successful, Anfield will have a capacity in excess of its current 54,074 when United roll into town before Christmas.

A club statement read: “The upper tier of the new stand will be partially open for the upcoming fixture against Manchester United on December 17, with several thousand general admission seats expected to be available to supporters. This is subject to an internal emergency conditions test managed in conjunction with Liverpool City Council and a public test event, which is expected to take place during the week commencing December 11.
