Police appeal following assault of a woman in Manchester

0

Greater Manchester Police officers are appealing for additional information following a report of a serious assault on a woman in North Manchester.

The lady was walking on her own near the Shell Garage on Oldham Road in Manchester, between the hour of midnight and 2am on Saturday when she was approached by three unknown men and assaulted.

The injuries she sustained are believed not to be life-threatening.

Detective inspector Michelle Buchanan of GMP’s North Manchester CID said: “We are still in the early stages of our investigation into this incident but would like to appeal to any witnesses in the early hours during this weekend that may have seen something strange or have access to any dashcam, doorbell or CCTV footage we haven’t been able to obtain already to please check if they have recorded anything that could help us.

“The victim is being supported as this time but is understandably shaken by the incident which was unprovoked. We would like to commend her bravery in finding the courage to report this to us in confidence.

“Patrol plans are in place and our enquiries are continuing around the clock to identify the suspects and bring them into custody to answer for their actions which will not be tolerated.”

Anyone with details that will help officers with their enquiries is asked to call 0161 856 4116 or 101 quoting incident 303 of 25/11/2023. Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police make 256 arrests during largest operation to target organised crime

0

Some of the UK’s most sophisticated criminals have been jailed for a combination of 1013 years.

Operation Foam – which investigates criminals who use encrypted mobile phones – has seen 256 people arrested.

EncroChat devices are often used to orchestrate their criminal business. It is used like a criminal instant messaging service, with messages detailing all sorts of nefarious illegal dealings. Previously, the technology behind these devices made it impossible for police to obtain any data or evidence.

The criminals believed these encrypted devices rendered them untouchable, and over the years, they have sought to facilitate the most heinous crimes.

Police achievements

In almost three years, police have removed criminals from the streets, achieving the following:

  • 256 initiatives arrested
  • 111 people jailed for a combined total of 1013 years, with a further 111 awaiting trial
  • More than £2.9 million in cash seized. A portion of this will be returned to GMP to fund community initiatives
  • 330kg of class A and B drugs, and 2.6 million class C tablets seized
  • 42 firearms and 1303 rounds of ammunition removed from the streets of Greater Manchester.

Operation Foam was launched in March 2020 when police forces across the UK were handed hundreds of thousands of messages from a once encrypted messaging platform by the National Crime Agency, who, as part of Operation Venetic, had infiltrated the largest providers of secure, encrypted communications.

Detective superintendent Joe Harrop, head of Serious Organised Crime at GMP, said: “This breakthrough was monumental and gave us insight into the criminal underworld in a way we’d not had access before.

“Operation Foam is our largest ever operation into organised crime in Manchester, and work continues behind the scenes. We have specialist teams working tirelessly, trawling through messages to attribute handles and devices to criminals across the UK. But our work hasn’t stopped, and we continue to dismantle the countries most sophisticated criminal networks, we are still making regular arrests, with more on the horizon.

“We are unceasing in our efforts to disrupt these criminal networks, and this is just one of hundreds of tactics used by teams across the force to tackle organised crime in our communities.”

Guardiola’s tribute to ‘proper man’ Venables

Pep Guardiola has hailed Terry Venables for his “incredible impact” at Barcelona and labelled him a “proper, proper man”.

Venables died yesterday, aged 80, after a long illness. He is best remembered in England for guiding the Three Lions to the semi-finals of Euro 96, but, as manager of Barcelona, he had an impact on a young Guardiola.

Former England boss Venables dies

The Manchester City boss was a Barca fan at the time Venables led the Blaugrana to the 1985 La Liga title and the final of the European Cup 12 months later.

A fabulous picture that shows Guardiola as a ball boy, looking up in admiration at Venables, has circulated on social media today and the Catalan was fulsome in his praise of the Londoner.

He said: “As a Barcelona fan he gave us the first La Liga after 11 or 12 years.

“His impact there was incredible. He introduced something that had never been seen before, especially a certain type of pressing and the set pieces…I remember how many goals our central defender scored. He introduced many, many things. A true gentleman.

“Unfortunately, he could not win the Champions League in that time, with the final against Steaua Bucharest, but it’s a big loss for English football and for his family and for his wife.

“I read a lot in this past 24 hours, how many players talk about him and he was really impressive. Big condolences to all his family.”

Venables was a larger than life character and Guardiola fondly remembered how he enjoyed life away from the pitch as well.

He added: “The impact in that time, it was about two seasons so not long but the impact on the way they play, I remember talking with friends of mine who did play with him and their words for him not just as a manager but as a person.

“[He was] so funny, singing Frank Sinatra on Catalan shows. He was a proper, proper man.”

‘Together we are stronger’ – Guardiola asks for unity from Manchester City fans

Pep Guardiola has urged Manchester City fans to get behind his team, insisting “together we are stronger”.

Guardiola gestured at the home support during the 1-1 draw with Liverpool at the weekend, touching his ears as if to request more noise, as his side struggled in the second half to find their customary attacking fluency.

It is not the first time the former Barcelona boss has hinted at dissatisfaction with the vocal backing his players receive in home games.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League game with RB Leipzig, he struck a more conciliatory note, saying: “The stadium is always full, we have to play as best as possible, create as much to energise the people.

“The games last season, important games, against Arsenal for the Premier League, they [the fans] were there. We need that, in my humble opinion – to be successful we need our fans.

“Thank you so much, [because] without them [it is] not possible to be here. Together we are stronger. For them to be part of our game is much better and [when] we feel they are there, we play better.

“We have to do the first steps all the time. Tomorrow hopefully they can come and enjoy the game.”

A point against Leipzig will guarantee City top spot in Group G and a last 16 clash with a second-placed finisher. It will also mean the second leg is at home, something Guardiola feels is an advantage.

He added: “The first step is done to qualify for the next round but it’s important to finish [the next round] at home. We believe that having the second leg at home is an advantage and we have to take it.”

City’s form this season has not been as dominant as in previous years, and successive draws with Chelsea and Liverpool has seen them displaced by Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

Guardiola is not concerned, though, adding: “I think we are performing really well, we have to continue. We are not top of the league but I think we are playing well in general.”

The European champions have managed just three clean sheets in their last 11 games but their manager doesn’t feel defensive fragility is an issue.

He said: “The only game we conceded a lot of goals and chances was Chelsea [in a 4-4 draw].

“The rest is the same averages as last season. Against Liverpool we conceded two shots on target, Wolves one shot on target. Our average is good.

“I give credit to Chelsea. The rest is similar.”

Rochdale company appointed for multi-million pound bridge repair project

A specialist contractor has been appointed to repair Queen’s Park Bridge, which connects Rochdale with Heywood.

Rochdale-based BDP Special Projects Ltd will lead the work to repair and strengthen 136m long bridge in a £4 million investment.

The bridge was first constructed in the early 1930s but is now showing signs of disrepair.

The 12-month project, which will get under way in January 2024, will see extensive concrete repairs to the structure beneath the road surface and replacement of the parapets.

Existing concrete barriers, which separate the pavement from the road, will be replaced with new kerbs, known as Trief kerbs, which are more attractive and place less weight onto the bridge, while still offering protection for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Reinstatement of the structure’s historic features will also take place as part of the project. Steel lighting columns, which were recently removed after falling into a state of disrepair, will be carefully recreated by specialists in their original green and gold colours, before being reinstated on the bridge.

Councillor Shah Wazir said: “Queen’s Park Bridge is a really important and well used part of our highways network. It connects Heywood and Rochdale, and has been a familiar sight for our residents for generations, particularly those who use it to access award-winning Queen’s Park.

“While it’s stood proud for almost a century, it’s now showing its age, so we’re stepping in to ensure it will be fit for another hundred years. As well as vital strengthening and repair work, contractors will be reinstating historic features like the lighting columns, and making the whole area more attractive.”

Ben Dobson, director at BDP, said: “As we’re based in Heywood, this is on our doorstep, so it’s an absolute honour to undertake this project. This bridge has been in place for 90 years now and it’s a key gateway into Heywood. We’ll be giving back to the community by supporting the repair of the BMX track in Queen’s Park and we’re hoping to do some projects with the two primary schools along Queen’s Park Road, St Michael’s and St Luke’s.”

The Queen’s Park bridge project is BDP’s second major project on Heywood’s roads, as they supported Sisk and Russells on the recent construction of the junction 19 link road, Queen Elizabeth Way, which opened last year.

Access will be maintained for both motorists, pedestrians and cyclists throughout the project, except for occasional overnight closures, with the bridge operating on lights.

In order to support motorists who may choose alternative routes, nearby Bamford Way, which also connects Rochdale and Heywood, is currently being resurfaced.

The project has fuelled further regeneration of Heywood, which is the focus of major investment as part of a wider masterplan for the area. The plan, which is already being delivered, includes a multi-million pound redevelopment of the Heywood Civic Centre and major improvements to the roads and public realm in the town centre

Davis Cup Final: Preview, prediction and how to watch Italy v Australia

Italy and Australia will each look to end their long wait for a Davis Cup triumph as the likes of Jannik Sinner and Alex De Minaur do battle in Malaga on Sunday.

Sinner has been the story of the Davis Cup so far, twice starring in victories over Novak Djokovic in the last four to lead his Italy team into the final, giving them a great opportunity to finally end their 47-year wait and lift the famous trophy again.

They will have to overcome a shocking record in Davis Cup finals against Australia, however, having lost all three of the meetings against them in showpiece games at the tournament.

De Minaur will look to extend that winning run on Sunday, taking on Sinner in the second singles match having beaten Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori to clinch a 2-0 win and help Australia to reach a second consecutive final.

Australia are led by captain Lleyton Hewitt, who will be hoping his team can avoid the same fate as in the 2022 edition, when they were beaten in the final by Canada. Hewitt has enjoyed great history in the competition, winning the opening singles match in 2023 to set up the final victory over Spain.

In the final’s other matches, Alexei Popyrin and Matteo Arnaldi will look to get their teams off to a positive start in the opening singles match, before Australia’s Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell will do battle with Italy’s Simone Bolleli and Lorenzo Sonego in what could prove to be a pivotal doubles match.

How to watch

The final will be available to watch live for those who subscribe to the Tennis Channel International.

It will also be live on BBC iPlayer for those in the United Kingdom.

What’s been said?

De Minaur said: “No one really wants to play us. We’re a very solid squad, a lot of depth in every single position, and if we can get ourselves to a deciding doubles, we’ve got an unbelievable pairing as well.

Sinner said: “We will try to stay as relaxed as possible, keeping a smile in our head, which is important also, and then also to be happy to be here. For me, it’s the first time that we can play a final in Davis Cup, which means a lot for us.”

Prediction

Sinner has been the star of the tournament, and he looks like he could be the man to lead his nation to a long-awaited Davis Cup triumph.

The match between Arnaldi and Popyrin could go either way, as well as the doubles, but a Sinner victory over De Minaur could have Italy heading into a decisive final match with momentum and that may well be the difference.

Former England manager Venables dies aged 80

Terry Venables has died at the age of 80 after a long illness.

Venables managed England between 1994 and 1996, leading the team to the semi-finals of Euro 1996, where the Three Lions ultimately succumbed to Germany on penalties.

Venables also managed the likes of Tottenham and Barcelona after a long playing career that saw him turn out for Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, winning the FA Cup for Spurs as both a player and manager.

A statement said: “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.

“We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.”

Richard Bevan, chief executive of the League Managers’ Association, said in a statement: “The LMA is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of LMA member and former LMA President Terry Venables.

“Our thoughts are very much with Yvette and all of Terry’s family at this time.”

Spurs will pay tribute to Venables ahead of their Premier League match on Sunday, with the players wearing black armbands in memory of their former player and manager, while a minute’s applause will also be held before kick-off.

Root follows Stokes with IPL withdrawal

Joe Root has followed his England team-mate Ben Stokes in withdrawing from the 2024 IPL.

The Rajasthan Royals announced Root’s decision on Sunday, the day before the retention deadline, with the 32-year-old believed to be managing his workload after a hectic 2023 that saw him play in the IPL, the Hundred and the Ashes before England’s terrible World Cup campaign in India.

Rob Key, England’s managing director, stated after the World Cup that Root “needs a break”, and Rajasthan’s director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara said the Royals respect his decision not to play, having made three appearances in the 2023 edition.

“During our retention conversations, Joe informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024,” Sangakkara said.

“Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him.

“His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does.”

Lee holds on to claim home Australian PGA Championship

Min Woo Lee survived a wobble on Sunday to hold off Rikuya Hoshino and win his home Australian PGA Championship for the first time.

Lee headed into the final round with a three shot-lead, but that had vanished within three holes as he bogeyed the first while Hoshino collected birdies at the second and third.

Lee responded, though, making three birdies and an eagle on the rest of the front nine to restore his commanding lead at the top of the standings as Hoshino bogeyed the ninth and 10th.

Lee would bogey on three separate holes on the back nine, but Hoshino could not capitalise, finishing with a run of seven straight pars as Lee took the trophy with a 20-under finish, winning by three shots.

Australian Marc Leishman made a course record-equalling 63 to clinch third, while countryman Curtis Luck finished fourth. Joaquin Niemann’s hole in one on the par-three fourth helped him to end in fifth.

Lee was delighted with the victory and delighted to have held on after the early wobble, saying: “I made it interesting early on and through the middle but I ended up hanging on and I’m really proud.

“Rikuya is a really good player and he kept knocking on the door, but it was exactly the same as my last win. My playing partner just kept coming, so I knew I needed to keep playing well and do my thing.

“I’m really proud how I made some up-and-downs and some putts.”

Rashford available for Bayern clash as UEFA rule on Manchester United forward’s Champions League ban

Marcus Rashford will only serve a one-match ban after receiving a straight red card in Manchester United’s 4-3 Champions League defeat at Copenhagen earlier this month, UEFA has confirmed.

Rashford was sent off in the 42nd minute of United’s last European fixture, with the Red Devils 2-0 up when he caught Elias Achouri’s ankle with his studs.

Erik ten Hag’s men were subsequently pegged back to 2-2 before going ahead through Bruno Fernandes’ penalty, but late goals from Lukas Lerager and Roony Bardghji handed them their third defeat in four games in Group A.

United must now avoid defeat on Wednesday’s trip to Galatasaray to have any chance of reaching the last 16, and Rashford will serve a one-match European ban when they visit Istanbul.

However, UEFA ruled on Friday that Rashford’s tackle did not merit greater punishment, so he will be available when Bayern Munich – who have already qualified as Group A winners – visit Old Trafford on December 12.

Having scored 30 goals in all competitions for United last season, Rashford has endured a miserable start to the 2023-24 campaign.

He has only scored one goal in 16 appearances across all club competitions this season, going 12 games without scoring since netting in a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Arsenal in September.
