Rashford available for Bayern clash as UEFA rule on Manchester United forward’s Champions League ban

Marcus Rashford will only serve a one-match ban after receiving a straight red card in Manchester United’s 4-3 Champions League defeat at Copenhagen earlier this month, UEFA has confirmed.

Rashford was sent off in the 42nd minute of United’s last European fixture, with the Red Devils 2-0 up when he caught Elias Achouri’s ankle with his studs.

Erik ten Hag’s men were subsequently pegged back to 2-2 before going ahead through Bruno Fernandes’ penalty, but late goals from Lukas Lerager and Roony Bardghji handed them their third defeat in four games in Group A.

United must now avoid defeat on Wednesday’s trip to Galatasaray to have any chance of reaching the last 16, and Rashford will serve a one-match European ban when they visit Istanbul.

However, UEFA ruled on Friday that Rashford’s tackle did not merit greater punishment, so he will be available when Bayern Munich – who have already qualified as Group A winners – visit Old Trafford on December 12.

Having scored 30 goals in all competitions for United last season, Rashford has endured a miserable start to the 2023-24 campaign.

He has only scored one goal in 16 appearances across all club competitions this season, going 12 games without scoring since netting in a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Arsenal in September.
