Manchester City duo Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku were both absent from Tuesday’s training session as the UEFA Champions League holders prepare for Wednesday’s trip to Red Star Belgrade.

City are looking to maintain their perfect record in Group G on the final matchday, having wrapped up top spot last time out with a 3-2 comeback win against RB Leipzig.

A foot injury kept Haaland out as City came from behind to beat Luton Town 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, with boss Pep Guardiola saying the club will take his recovery “week by week, day by day”.

The Norwegian was not expected to feature in Serbia, and he did not participate as City were put through their paces on Tuesday before making the trip.

Champions League permutations – who needs what to qualify on matchday six?

After almost three months of thrills and spills, brilliance and controversy, it’s crunch time in the Champions League.

Tonight sees the first batch of matchday six games with the remainder taking place tomorrow.

Manchester City and Arsenal are already through to the knockout stages but the hopes of Manchester United and Newcastle are hanging by a thread with both needing help from elsewhere should they want to remain in Europe’s premier club competition.

Here, we run through all the permutations as the continent’s elite prepare to jockey for position.

Group A (Qualified: Bayern Munich)

Bayern Munich have qualified as group winners, taking 13 points from their first five games, but it’s all to play for behind them.

Manchester United enter matchday six bottom of the group after their 3-3 draw with Galatasaray. They must win at home to Bayern and hope Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw in order to finish second, though a victory will at least guarantee them a third-place finish and Europa League football.

Copenhagen lead Galatasaray on goal difference, so a home draw will send them through, with the Turkish giants needing to win to advance.

Group B (Qualified: Arsenal, PSV)

Arsenal qualified as group winners by routing Lens 6-0 last time out, and that result also guaranteed PSV second place, so there is nothing to play for when the top two meet tonight.

Lens host Sevilla in the group’s other game, knowing a draw will see them drop into the Europa League. The Spanish outfit must win to reach a competition they have won a record seven times.

GROUP C (Qualified: Real Madrid)

Top spot is also decided here, with Real Madrid boasting a perfect record after five games.

Napoli are close to confirming second place; they must avoid losing by two or more goals against Braga tonight to qualify for the last 16. The Portuguese side can only advance with a handsome victory in Italy.

Bottom team Union Berlin, meanwhile, need to win at home to Madrid and hope Napoli beat Braga in order to take the consolation prize of a Europa League place.

Group D (Qualified: Real Sociedad, Inter)

Real Sociedad and Inter have both qualified for the round of 16, and top spot will be decided when they face off tonight. The Nerazzurri must win to overtake La Real, who boast a better goal difference.

Salzburg and Benfica – who squandered a 3-0 lead to draw with Inter last time out – will face off for a Europa League place, with the Lisbon giants needing to win by two or more goals to finish third.

Group E (Qualified: Atletico Madrid, Lazio)

Atletico Madrid and Lazio have both qualified for the knockouts, with Diego Simeone’s side holding a one-point lead over the Biancocelesti and only needing a draw to top the group when they face each other tomorrow.

Feyenoord are guaranteed to drop into the Europa League, while winless Celtic will finish bottom regardless of their matchday six result.

Group F (Qualified: Borussia Dortmund)

This is where things get interesting. Borussia Dortmund have qualified and will top the group if they avoid defeat at home to Paris Saint-Germain.

Behind BVB, it’s all to play for. PSG enter matchday six second with seven points, but they must win in Germany to be certain of a top-two finish. A victory will also see them top the group.

Newcastle United and Milan face off at St James’ Park, currently locked level on five points. The Magpies must win and hope PSG fail to do so to advance, while the Rossoneri must win and hope PSG lose.

If PSG advance to the last 16, the winner of Newcastle’s meeting with Milan – or the Magpies if it finishes level – will claim the Europa League place. Understood?

Group G (Qualified: Manchester City, RB Leipzig)

This is the only group where everything is decided. Reigning champions Manchester City have guaranteed top spot, with RB Leipzig going through as runners-up. Young Boys will play Europa League football after Christmas, and Red Star Belgrade are out entirely.

Group H (Qualified: Barcelona)

Leaders Barcelona have qualified for the last 16 and will win the group unless a remarkable sequence of events transpires tomorrow night. Barca would have to lose to pointless Antwerp, with Shakhtar Donetsk beating Porto and making up a seven-goal swing over the Blaugrana, to deny them top spot.

Porto and Shakhtar meet in Portugal in a winner-take-all clash as they battle for second place. Porto hold the head-to-head advantage, so a draw will be enough to send them through.

Getafe are interested in making Mason Greenwood’s loan stay permanent but are yet to discuss a transfer with Manchester United, club president Angel Corres has revealed.

Greenwood joined Getafe on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day in September, with the forward last appearing for United back in January 2022.

Greenwood was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault, with all of those charges being denied by the player.

All charges against him were dropped in February this year after the withdrawal of key witnesses led the Crown Prosecution Service to conclude there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.

However, a widespread backlash to his potential United return led the club to conduct a U-turn on a plan to reintegrate him in August, and he was loaned to Getafe after the Red Devils said it would be “most appropriate” for him to continue his career elsewhere.

Greenwood has scored four goals in 13 appearances for Getafe, who currently sit ninth in LaLiga, and his loan club are open to him extending his stay in Spain.

Asked about Greenwood’s future while conducting a hospital visit on behalf of the club on Tuesday, Getafe president Corres said: “We see any possibility, even buying him.

“We have not talked about the price. We have talked about looking at the situation and seeing what they propose because there will also be a change of shareholding there [at United].

“We are still happy with the meetings we have with them. It is still too early to consider either continuing for one more season or that they will propose a price and we will commit.

“I believe a lot [in Greenwood]. From here, we continue to work periodically, we continue to meet with Manchester to see if they are happy.

“The truth is that they are happy with his treatment, not only from the fans of Getafe, but also from the whole of Spain. Now we have to keep on defending him.

“He didn’t play for 16 months and I think that in January or February he will be able to get the rhythm. He will give us satisfaction.”

Despite Christmas cutbacks for lots of families, the average spend for the festive period will still be more than £700 per person, new research reveals.

According to The Green Insurer, more than one in four (26%) people plan to spend less on Christmas compared to last year taking into account all aspects of festive spending including food, travel and presents.

Just one in seven shoppers said they expected their spending to increase.

But the average spend per person is estimated at £716.

Around 10% of people questioned are planning on spending £1,500 or more on the festive season.

Christmas spending

People are expecting to concentrate savings on the cost of gifts for their partners. Around 22% questioned say they will spend less this year on a gift for their partner.

Around 60% of those planning to cut back on spending on their partner are women compared with 40% of men.

The reduced spending on partners will be significant with nearly one in three (31%) planning to cut spending by 25% or more on their partner’s gift.

The research found that the overwhelming reason for reducing spending this year is the cost of living crisis. Around 79% reducing spending blamed the squeeze on living standards although 4% said they weren’t getting on with family and friends.

It’s not just money saving that people are looking at this year – around 15% say they are considering saving time on picking presents by relying on online Artificial Intelligence services such as Google’s to suggest present ideas.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has contributed to the community by donating clothing confiscated during raids on counterfeit shops as part of Operation Vulcan.

Launched in August 2022, Operation Vulcan aims to eliminate the counterfeit goods trade from various areas in the region.

As a result of the operation, GMP officers have conducted numerous raids on counterfeit shops, seizing items that have now found a second purpose.

The de-branded clothing has been generously given to charities and community organisations, while unsuitable items have been ingeniously repurposed, with the shredded materials being transformed into new items such as bedding.

Working in collaboration with a specialised company, the police force revealed that almost 1,000 tonnes of counterfeit items have been either repurposed or recycled, underscoring the success of their efforts in combating illicit trade.

Insp Dan Cullum emphasised the community-centric approach of Operation Vulcan, stating, “The community and their needs are at the heart of Operation Vulcan, and the fact that we have been able to repurpose and recycle everything and give it back to those in need really makes a difference.”

The proactive team has chosen to donate a substantial quantity of clothing to the local charity, the Mustard Tree, which actively addresses poverty, inequality, and homelessness in Manchester.

The donation comprises hundreds of items, which Harry Dwan from the Mustard Tree expressed gratitude for, stating, “This donation is gratefully received and will now be provided to those who need it most such as those sleeping on the streets, low-income families, and those who are most vulnerable in the community.”

This initiative not only reflects GMP’s commitment to eradicating counterfeit trade but also underscores their dedication to contributing positively to the well-being of the local community.
